A 1938 game worn Lou Gehrig jersey was sold for a possible record of $402,500 to an anonymous bidder on Saturday. The auction took place at the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory in Kentucky.
The Jersey was originally held by a New Jersey man who was trying to start an amateur baseball team. I think he was hoping the jersey had magical powers and could make any person who wore it play like Lou. Alass, it was not the case and the team folded a year later. The Jersey was then placed in storage were it stayed for years.
Other items in the collection included 44 Hall of Fame autographed cards and post cards which sold for $165,746 or almost three and half Gehrig Jerseys and 2007 MLB All-Star Player Homerun/Workout jerseys that sold for $51,980. All the monies raised were donated to MLB's Baseball Assistance Team charity.
