Midseason steals

According to foxsports.com, the Braves have finalized deals with Texas and Kansas City today. As previously posted, the Braves picked up Mark Teixeira from the Rangers on Monday and today comes word that they'll have a new set up guy for Bob Wickman, Octavio Dotel. The Royals will get Georgia native Kyle Davies who was recently sent down to AAA Richmond. Davies was 4-8 with a 5.76 ERA.

In other trade news, the Yankees traded Scott Proctor to Los Angeles for former Brave Wilson Betemit..the St. Louis Cardinals picked up Joel Piniero and cash from the Boston Red Sox for minor leaguer to be named later..and the Red Sox and Texas Rangers agreed to a deal for Eric Gagne, one hitch, he has to agree to it. The Red Sox were not one of the twelve teams Gagne had agreed to, but randomly, the Milwaukee Brewers were. I guess he enjoys the cool freshing taste of Miller lite. The Red Sox would in return send Kason Gabbard, AAA outfielder David Murphy and A outfielder Engel Beltre to the Rangers.

There are 13 minutes left, let's see who else can make a deal.

UPDATE: The San Diego Padres are close to acquiring Houston Astros third baseman (and recently demoted after the Wiggington trade) Morgan Ensberg as well as White Sox outfielder Rob Mackowiak.

The possible Jermaine Dye deal to Boston is DOA.

Five more minutes...tick...tock...

Braves Rumors

With only a few more hours until the non-waiver trade deadline here are the latest rublings from Atlanta:

-The Braves continued to push on other trade fronts and made offers for Kansas City closer Octavio Dotel and Cincinnati starter Bronson Arroyo. -- Atlanta Journal-Constitution (via foxsports.com)

-The Royals appeared to ready to trade veteran closer Octavio Dotel to the Atlanta Braves on Monday afternoon for right-handed starter Kyle Davies. The Royals continue to discuss trade possibilities with other club in case talks break down with the Braves. The Dodgers, Indians and Mariners have strongly pursued Dotel, who entered Monday's series opener against the Twins at 2-1 with a 3.91 ERA and 11 saves in 14 opportunities since returning May 22 from the disabled list. Davies, 23, has spent parts of the last three seasons in the Braves' rotation but has yet to reach their projection of a front-line starter. He was demoted recently to Class AAA Richmond after going 4-8 with a 5.76 ERA in 17 starts. -- KC Star (via foxsports.com)

Just one of those days

Braves Update:
A day after they acquired first baseman, Mark Teixeira, the Braves will be back in action hosting the Houston Astros. Hopefully they can over the whole losing to the teams you should beat and beating the teams you should lose to thing they've been doing all season. Crossing fingers! Chuck James takes the mound against Houston's Chris Sampson. Coverage starts at 7:35 on SS.

Games behind NY Mets in NL East: 4.5

NASCAR Update:
JR Motorsports and Hendrick Motorsports will merge beginning in the 2008 season. The team will run two Busch Series cars under the JR Motorsports banner, with Hendrick supplying the chassis and engine support. Kevin Harvick and Richard Childress announced a similiar deal.

Popo in my Crib News:
There has been a rash of athlete's being robbed in the past few months including news of a home invasion at Eddy Curry's suburban Chicago home over the weekend. One state over, up and coming Busch Series driver Steven Wallace is reportedly ok after three men tried to rob him of his watch in Indianapolis of Sunday. One of the perps has already been caught by the popo. Watch out robbers, because the popo are on your tail! (via Jayski.com)

The FBI and IRS searched Alaska Senator Ted Stevens' home on Monday. Stevens is being investiaged amid a corruption scandal that has already caught two oil executives and a state lobbyist. The probe stems from a 2000 renovation project that "doubled the size of his home in Girwood, Alaska, near Anchorage." Bill Allen, who oversaw the project, has already plead guilty to bribing Alaska state legistlators. Watch out Teddy, becuase the popo are on your tail!

News & Notes: Andy Roddick is blaming a late night snack fest at a fast food joint for his sluggish performance at an Indianapolis tennis tournament on Saturday. Roddick lost in the semis to Frank Dancevic. Hey Andy, why not sue the fast food chain? I mean everyone's doing it...Cole Hamels held the Chicago Cubs to just one run in the Phillies 4-1 win on Monday night. The loss puts the Phills 3 games behind the Mets and the Cubs one game behind the Milwuakee Brewers...Sad News, legendary San Fancisco 49ers coach Bill Walsh died on Monday. He was 75...MLB isn't the only league hashing out big trades, the NBA will see one of its biggest stars move from Minnesota to Boston. SI.com is reporting both sides finalized a deal on Monday that will move Al Jefferson, Theo Ratliff, Gearld Green and Sebastian Telfair to the Minnesota Timberwolves for 10 time all-star Kevin Garnett...Finally, Brady Quinn is still a no show at Browns mini-camp. The unattractive quarterback and his agent are asking for more money, like top ten draft pick money. Only problem is, his was selected 22nd. Hey rookie, get your ass on the field!

Moving on up and out

The Braves aren't the only NL East team making deals today. The Philadelphia Phillies have acquired Kyle Lohse from the Cincinnati Reds for minor leaguer Matt Maloney. The Phillies, who may have lost reliever Ryan Madson for the season on Sunday, have had a plethora of pitching injuries this year including Freddy Garcia.

The Mets are thisclose to acquiring Luis Castillo from the Minnesota Twins. The Twins have been looking at class AA catcher Drew Butera and Class A outfielder Dustin Martin. Castillo would replace oft-injured Jose Valentin.

The Braves are also one of the finalists in the Octavio Dotel race. The Kansas City Royals reliever is being looked at by the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Detroit Tigers and Mariners.

With the trade deadline up at 4 PM/est tomorrow, I'm sure there will be more news to come.

Breaking News

According to foxsports.com, the Braves are on the verge of a trade with the Texas Rangers. The Braves will get switch hitting first baseman Mark Teixeira and left-handed reliever Ron Mahay for catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Class A short stop Evlis Andrus, Class AA left hander Matt Harrison and another pitching prospect. Now all that is left to do is physicals on the players in question and the deal is as good as done. Gee, Salty makes the second Brave wearing the #18 to be traded this year, with outfielder Ryan Langerhans donning the 1-8 earlier this season before being traded to Oakland (and then DC).

At first I was very hesitant about the whole deal. I didn't really want to part with Salty, and I still don't, but Salty is not ready at first, Julio Franco is ancient and Scott Thorman is not getting the job done. If we have any hope of making a late season push, we need stability at first...and some pitching.

UPDATE: The Rangers asked for a subsitute after developing concerns with the health of Matt Harrison. The Braves will instead send Nestali Feliz and a player to be named later.

Braves Update:
The Braves finally broke out of their slump and it didn't even take extra innings! The Braves had 19 hits in their 14-0 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday afternoon with starter Tim Hudson throwing seven scoreless innings. The Braves have the day off before returning to Turner Field for their series against the Houston Astros.

Games behind NY Mets in NL East: 4.5
Games above .500: 4
NL Wild Card Leader: Arizona Diamondbacks/Los Angeles Dodgers

Braves Notes: The Braves are still working with the Texas Rangers on a deal that would send Jarrod Saltamacchia, Elvis Andrus and a pitcher to Texas for Mark Teixeira...The Braves designated Wil Ledezma for assignment on Sunday about a month after they traded Macay McBride to the Tigers for him. With Ledezma out of options, the Braves have ten days to either trade him or release him...The Braves called up Jose Ascanio to replace Ledzema.

NASCAR Update:
You can call Tony Stewart a two time Nextel Cup Champ and a two time Brickyard 400 winner after Sunday's win. Stewart dueled with Kevin Harvick in the closing laps, allowing his to cross the bricks first. Last year's winner, Jimmie Johnson did not fair as well, spinning early and then ending his day with a slap shot against the wall.
Race Results Points Standings

In why you shouldn't date your boss news...Erin Crocker is asking for a release from Evernham Motorsports after her "personal relationship" with owner Ray Evernham has seemingly put her career on hold. Although other reports have it as Evernham looking to move Crocker elsewhere, the moral of the story is the same, don't get involved with your boss!

News & Notes: Chicago Cubs pitcher, Carlos Zambrano, became the first to 14 wins after the Cubs blanked the Cincinnati Reds 6-0...Michael Straham was a no-show at Giants training camp on Saturday. His agent said the lineman was considering retirement. Shouldn't you have thought about that in say January?...Since he's got the season off, Adam "Pacman" Jones is considering an offer to wrestle professionally for Total Non-Stop Action Wrestling (TNA)...Finally, congratulations to the San Jose SaberCats on their third ArenaBowl title after beating the Columbus destroyers 55-33.

Popo in my Crib News

New York Knicks center Eddy Curry's suburban Chicago area home was robbed on Saturday morning. Curry's family and an employee were held at gun point while three masked robberies searched the house stealing an undisclosed amount of jewelry and cash. Watch out masked robbers because the popo are on your tail!

Kansas City Royals outfielder, Emil Brown "accidently" hit a member of the media with a plastic pellet in the clubhouse on Friday. Brown was playing around when he hit Karen Kornacki during an interview with Royal, Tony Pena, Jr. Kornacki is said to be ok while Brown made a start in left field in the Royals game against the Texas Rangers. Watch out Emil, because the popo are on your tail!

Random Quote: "I was just messing around in here. I feel terrible about it. Karen is one of the nicest persons that I've met, especially as far as the media is concerned. This happening to her, I feel absolutely awful about it." -Emil Brown

Braves Update:
Jeff Francoeur hit a two run homer in the fourth inning to give the Braves the early lead, but Buddy Carlyle gave up three runs in the fifth and another in the sixth in the Braves 4-2 loss to the San Francisco Giants. The Braves move onto to Arizona to take on the Diamondbacks for a weekend series. Jo-Jo Reyes will take the mound against Yusmeiro Petit. Watch live at 9:40 PM/est on TBS.

NASCAR Update:
It's off to the Brickyard this weekend for one of NASCAR's crowned jeweled events. Past winners include hoosier hometown guys, Tony Stewart (2005) and Jeff Gordon who has won four times including the inaugural race. This will also be ESPN's first race of the season and is said to feature new technology to enhance your viewing experience. We'll see. Coverage starts at 1 PM/est on ESPN.

Carl Edwards will race in both the Busch and Cup Series this weekend after dislocating his thumb in a dirt track race in Nebraska last Sunday, but don't expect the Busch Series points leader to sign anything well.

Random Quote: "I feel great right now. If I dislocate it again, I'll be in excruciating pain, but right now, it feels fine." - Carl Edwards on his thumb

Popo in my Crib News:
We'll call this NFL math. What does NFL player plus strip club equal? If you said arrest then you'd be right. Carolina Panthers tackle Jeremy Bridges was arrested on Thursdday night after allegedly pointing a gun at a female strip club employee. He is charged with misdemeanor assult. Watch out Jeremy, because the popo are on you tail!

News & Notes: The Phillies suffered two loses on Thursday, the first came during the game when all-star second baseman Chase Utley was hit by Washington Nationals' John Lannan's pitch which broke his hand and then there was the 7-6 final score. Ultey was placed on the DL and is expected to miss four to six weeks...Even though Alex Rodriguez did not hit a homerun in the Yankees 7-0 loss to the Kansas City Royals on Thursday, he may have already gotten his 500th. If A-Rod hits a homer during tonight's completion of the June 28th game against the Baltimore Orioles that was suspended due to rain, it will be his 493rd meaning the bomb he hit on Wednesday would be considered number 500. Got it? Me neither...The NFL denied two bad boys on Thursday. Pacman Jones, who is already suspended for the 2007 season was told by Commissioner Roger Goodell that he will not be allowed to attend Tennessee Titans training camp this year and Cincinnati Bengals middle linebacker Odell Thurman was denied reinstatement for the second straight year. He will be able to try again next year...Sad news, Wake Forest basketball coach Skip Prosser died on Thursday after going for a jog. Prosser collapsed on a coach and died of an apparent heart attack. He was only 56...Finally, the day has arrived, "The Simpson's Movie" has hit theaters.

Check this out: Catch up or rewatch episodes of "My Boys" on Sunday. TBS is having an all day marathon beginning at 10 AM/est. I'm so excited!

Baby Mama Drama

In honor of our boy Matt Leinart and his little domestic squabble, we’re bringing up some of our favorite illegitimate children stories.

Randy Johnson

Last year, news broke that Randy Johnson had a secret daughter, Heather, who he had fathered in 1989. Johnson was giving Laurel Roszell, the girl’s mother, $5000 a month in child support and an additional $750 for child care. Johnson was seeking the return of all 95 monthly child care payments or roughly $71,250 plus interest rounding it to a cool $100,000. Of course, Randy was only making $16 million with the Yankees that year and probably needed the money to pay for his medical expenses or whatever.

Shawn Kemp

In 2002, Kemp was ordered to pay an Ohio woman an additional $20,000 a month in child support payments. He had previously been giving Nikki Giavasis, the child's mother, only $2,500. But what struck us was the last line that mentioned that Kemp the Pimp had an estimated 12 or 13 illegitimate children. $20,000 a month times 13, well that’s getting kind of expensive.

Greg Minor

Minor, who’s child was famously on a 1998 Sports Illustrated cover was playing for the Boston Celtics while his three chilren, whom he'd had with his then girlfriend were forced to leave their home according to a 1997 Boston Globe article because Minor had reneged on purchasing the home for them. Class act!

Brian Urlacher

In more recent news, Chicago Bears star, Brian Urlacher was ordered by a judge to attend parenting classes with his baby’s mama, Tyna Robertson. Urlacher’s two year old son, Kennedy, has been living with his mother in Joliet, IL, 62 miles away from Brian’s Lake Forest home. Robertson was supposed to drive Kennedy to a toll booth rest stop halfway between her and Urlacher’s home, but had failed to do so at least four times. This kind of reminds me of that movie Bye Bye Love with Paul Reiser and Eliza Dushku. In the beginning of the movie, I think it’s Mathew Modine’s character who’s explaining that you have to pick a neutral space like the parking lot at McDonald’s for the drop off location. I figure the Mickey D’s is better than a truck stop, but hey, that’s just me.

Chipper Jones

My love for Chipper Jones has never floundered, not even during his whole Hooter's waitress incident. In 1999, Jones filed for divorce from then wife, Karin Fulford, who he had been married to for 6 ½ years, after it was revealed that in 1998 he had had an affair with a Hooter’s waitress that produced a child, Matthew. Jones has since remarried and now had three additional sons, Trey, Shea (after Shea Stadium) and Tris. Jones went on to win the NL MVP and probably goes to Hooter’s on Tuesdays because kids eat free. I wonder what air carrier he uses since Hooter’s air folded?

Braves Update:
The Braves' bats were quieted yesterday in their 2-1 loss to the San Francisco Giants. The Braves got off to an early 1-0 lead in the first off of an Andruw Jones single, but a lead-off homerun in the sixth by the Giant's Rich Aurilla seeled their fate. The Braves look to win their series finale with the Giants as Buddy Carlyle takes on the youngster, Tim Lincecum. The game starts at 7:05 Pm/est on TBS.

NASCAR Update:
Rumors are flying that Paul Newman along with partners Carl Haas and Micahel Lanigan have offered to buy Robert Yates Racing. Newman and Hass co-own the successful Newman/Haas racing team that has won three Champ Car championships and is looking at picking up its fourth.

Greg Biffle has an idea, put accused dogfight ring leader, Michael Vick in jail. Seriously, those legal battles can get so lengthy. We should totally handle murder cases with the old guilty until proven innocent motto, too.

Popo in my Crib News:
In the wake of the Michael Vick, Barry Bonds and Tim Donaghy stories, the NHL is trying to crack the headlines using two brothers, Eric Staal of the Carolina Hurricanes and Jordan Staal of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Staal brothers were arrested at Eric's bachelor party in Minnesota for misdemeanor disorderly conduct and obstructing the legal process. Jordan Staal was also arrested for underage drinking. Oops. It's no love cruise, but they'll take it! Watch out Jordan and Eric, because the popo are on your tail!

News & Notes: In one away news, Tom Glavine picked up his 299th career win on Wednesday in the Mets 6-3 win over the Pirates and Alex Rodriguez hit his 499th career homerun in the Yankees 7-1 win over the Royals...The Milwaukee Brewers traded three pitching prospects to San Diego for set-up man, Scott Linebrink. The Brew Crew are in contention for the first time in 15 years...Colorado Rockies pitcher, Aaron Cook, needed just 74 pitches for his second complete game of the season. The Rockies beat the Padres 10-2 on Wednesday...Finally, Gang Green will be without star running back Curtis Martin after Martin called it quits on Wednesday. The five time Pro Bowler will finishe fourth on the all-time rushing list.

Lucky Thirteen

Braves Update:
It took 13 innings, but the Braves managed to notch another victory, taking out the Giants 7-5. Tim Hudson threw 8 2/3 great innings before watching his four run lead disappear thanks to another blown save by Bob Wickman. The relief pitching of Oscar Villarreal, Peter Moylan and Tyler Yates allowed the Braves to keep the game going and a two run double by Edgar Renteria put it out of reach for the Giants. The Braves continue their series with Chuck James taking on Noah Lowry. Watch the action live on TBS at 10:15 PM/est.

Games behind NY Mets in NL East: 3
Games above .500: 7
NL Wild Card Leader: San Diego Padres

Braves Notes: Rumors have the Atlanta Braves as the leading contender in the Mark Teixeira race. The power hitting first baseman has been the hottest ticket on a very thin trade market. But the Braves would have to deal Jarrod Saltalamacchia and probably a young pitcher. To make matters worse, Teixeira would be a free agent at the end of the season and would be looking for at least $11 million a season. Dealing Salty for an $11 million player seems like a bad idea to me.

NASCAR Update:
The merger between Dale Earnhardt, Inc. and Ginn Racing has been completed. The #01, #1, #8 and #15 will race under the DEI banner with Mark Martin and Aric Amirola sharing time in the #01. The #15 will gain the points of the #13 which has raced all season and will guarantee Paul Menard a starting spot under the top 35 rule. No word on the status of Regan Smith who earlier was announced as the permanent driver for the #14 car, which along with the #13 has been shelved for this weekend.

News & Notes: It's always fun when the pitcher hits a homerun, especially if the team wins. Bronson Arroyo hit one out of the park for the Cincinnati Reds before the all-star break and now John Maine can add his name to the list of homerun hitting pitchers after hitting his first career long ball on Tuesday night in the Mets 8-4 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates...Craig Biggio announced his impending retirement at the end of the season and then hit a grand slam to break up a 3-3 tie in the Houston Astros 7-4 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers...Matt Leinart was called out by his baby's mama, Brynn Cameron for his lack of visitations. Matt responded that he tries to see his son Cole as much as possible. Maybe Brynn and Matt can join Brian Urlacher and his baby's mama, Tyna Robertson at parenting classes...Finally, a BALCO chemist, Patrick Arnold, told HBO Sports' Bob Costas that Barry Bonds and Gary Sheffield took performance-enhancing drugs. I just can't believe the news! I mean it's only the 337th time I've heard that Bonds has taken the juice.

How sweet

Seems commissioner Bud Selig has finally made up his mind and is going to try to be in the there when Barry Bonds breaks the homerun record. You know, unless his plane has engine problems and he just can't leave the tarmac or he has to take a bathroom break, Selig will be in the stands. He issued this statement:

"Throughout this season, I have watched Barry Bonds' pursuit of the home
run record. Now that he is on the verge of tying the record, the time has come
to announce that I will make every attempt to attend the record-setting
moment."

"Out of respect for the tradition of this game, the magnitude of the
record, and the fact that all citizens in this country are innocent until proven
guilty, I will attend Barry Bonds' next games to observe his potential tying and
breaking of the home run record, subject to my commitments to the Hall of Fame
this weekend. I will make an additional statement when the record is tied."
(source)

It was sure nice of him to include the whole innocent until proven guilty line. Is that some little insurance policy? If Barry is found to have taken the roids, Selig can say, poor little old me, I didn't know there were steriods in baseball. Oh wait, that's not right...Well, you can catch the circus live when the Giants take on the Braves on TBS at 10:15 PM/est. Let's go Braves!

Welcome Back

Braves Update:
After a late game on Sunday, the Braves traveled to San Francisco to begin their four game series. Even though they may have gotten little sleep, they sure didn't show it, scoring three runs in the first off of a Brian McCann double. John Smoltz held the Giants to just two runs while driving in a run of his own in the fourth. Barry Bonds went 1-3 with a single. Tim Hudson takes the mound against Matt Morris on Tuesday night. The game starts at 10:15 PM/est on TBS.

News & Notes: Jon Lester made a triumphant return to the mound on Monday after battling cancer last year. He threw six innings, allowing only five hits and two runs in the Red Sox 6-2 win over the Cleveland Indians...NL rookie of the year contender, Hunter Pence, will be out for 4-6 weeks with a right wrist capsular sprain. To top it off, the Houston Astros lost 10-2 to the Los Angeles Dodgers to drop to 15 games below .500...NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has banned Michael Vick from attending Atlanta Falcons training camp, until the NFL completes its investigation into Vick's alledged involvement in a dog fighting ring. This actually makes it easier for Vick, who now doesn't have to decide between attending his court date or training camp...Finally, Drew Carey was announced as the new host of "The Price is Right" taking over for 35 year veteran, Bob Barker.

So, you want to marry an athlete?

Athletes, like rock stars and actors, breathe rarified air. No matter how unattractive you are, you could score the hottest girl in the bar just because you throw a 100 mph fastball or can dunk a ball. On that reasoning, most athletes won’t date or marry just any girl. Here are the prototypes of an athlete’s significant other.

The Actress
Many a sports star has dated an actress, starting with Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe to Halle Berry and David Justice all the way up to these current pairings:

Dario Franchitti (2007 Indy 500 winner) and Ashley Judd (Kiss the Girls)
Until a few months ago, people were calling Dario Ashley's husband, but now Ashley's best known as being Dario's better half!

Tony Parker (San Antonio Spurs) and Eva Longoria ("Desperate Housewives")
With a lavish wedding and another championship ring, Tony Parker is having a pretty good year.

Brad Penny (Los Angeles Dodgers) and Eliza Dushku (Bring it On)
Playing in Los Angeles, Penny has developed a pention for dating brunette actresses like former flame Alyssa Milano, but with Brad and Eliza's multiple public appearances, maybe the pair are playing it for keeps.

Sean Avery (New York Rangers) and Elisha Cuthbert ("24")
Elisha Cuthbert was engaged to Justin Timberlake pal, Trace Ayala before moving on to hockey bad boy Sean Avery. I'm thinking she made the right move.

Ben Roethlisberger (Pittsburgh Steelers) and Missy Peregrym (Stick It)
Ben maybe be the youngest quarterback to lead his team to a Super Bowl title, but can he do a back flip?
The Singer
The pop star goes well with the athlete for multiple reasons. He/She tours a lot and understands the pains of being on the road. He/She also gets the whole fame thing. But most importantly, after a game, when you’re too hyped up to go to sleep, he/she can sing you a lullaby.

P!nk and Carey Hart (Motocross)
This maybe the most badass pair on the list.

Victoria (Spice Girls) and David Beckham (LA Galaxy)
Between his move to MLS soccer and her Spice Girls' reunion tour, I'm not quite sure which event I'm more excited for. Mmm...Spice Girls!

Kellie Pickler and Jordin Tootoo (Nashville Predators)
The country singer and former "American Idol" contestant from North Carolina and the hockey star from Canada have got Nashville all a buzz.

Enrique Iglesias and Anna Kournikova (retired "tennis" player)
The couple made quite a stir earlier this year with their rumored break-up but no pair is as well matched as the guy who wishes he could sing and the girl who wishes she could play tennis.

The Model
A model possesses an almost alien beauty that allows her to strike a pose for a few hours and make 20 grand, while an athlete must treat his body like a temple, which make these pairings one of the prettiest.

Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen
Tom definately loves his models. Before dating Gisele, Tom was in a three year relationship with former model, Bridget Moynahan.

Jimmie (NASCAR) and Chandra Johnson
While Chandra might have made a living modeling clothes, Jimmie could have easily been her co-star in the ads.

Jeff Gordon (NASCAR) and Ingrid Vandebosch
The two worked on the movie Taxi, so I'd imagine things could only go up from there.

The Reality TV Star
Being an almost celebrity gets you into the hottest parties (or maybe allows you to throw out the first pitch at a minor-league baseball game), meaning easy access. After all, athletes can’t be bothered with finding their mates at the grocery store.

Cole (Philadelphia Phillies) and Heidi Hamels ("Survivor")
Cole met Heidi at a minor-league game, where the "Survivor" star was to throw out the first pitch. He went to get her autograph and instead got her number. As they say, the rest is history.

Tim (New York Giants) and Elizabeth Hasselbeck ("Suvivor"/"The View")
I'm pretty sure, Tim as the back-up quarterback for the Giants, has the more prestigious job.

The Fellow Athlete
Being an athlete isn’t all fun and games. (Really it isn’t!) It requires a lot of work. Who better to understand your strife than some else who goes through the same pain?

Mia Hamm (USA Soccer) and Nomar Garciaparra (Los Angeles Dodgers)
Mia gave birth to twins in March. Now let's see which one can kick and which one can hit!

Misty May (Volleyball) and Matt Treanor (Florida Marlins)
In a recent interview on espn.com, Misty was asked who she sees more, her husband Matt or her volleyball partner Kerri Walsh. Much to Matt's chagrin, it's Kerri!

Jenny Finch (Olympic Softball) and Casey Daigel (Arizona Diamondbacks)
Note to any babysitter, don't play catch with this pair's kid, Ace. He'll probably hurt you with his fast ball.

Gabrielle Reece (volleyball/model) and Laird Hamilton (pro-surfer)
I'd wager that this is the hottest couple wondering the beaches of Hawaii.

Laila Ali (boxer) and Curtis Conway (ex-NFL)
Congrats to this happy couple, who were married over the weekend.

The Gold Digger
Finally, one of the pit falls of wealth is that there are all of these ladies after you for you’re wealth. So all of you stars athletes out there might want to avoid these kinds girls.

Kris and Anna Benson

I don’t know if she’s so much a gold digger as a big distraction that got her husband traded from the New York Mets to the Baltimore Orioles, but she is the type of women that every guy should steer clear of. Although, when you meet your prospective mate at a strip club, what can you expect?

Loves Lost
There have been other power couples that have fizzled over the years, like the baseball player and the beauty queen (Joe Mauer and Miss USA Chelsea Cooley), The NASCAR Driver and the swimmer (Carl Edwards and Amanda Beard), the surfer and the Baywatch babe (Kelly Slater and Pam Anderson), the quarterback and the celebutard (Matt Leinart and Paris Hilton), the tight end and the drunkard (Jeremy Shockey and Tara Reid) and Alyssa Milano and any major league pitcher. (Barry Zito, Brad Penny and Carl Povano) Although personally, I’m hoping for a Milano – Russell Martin pairing.
But hopefully for our aforementioned couples happiness lasts a lifetime.

It’s been fun blogging with you,
Kate

A case of the long ball

Braves Update:
The Braves started off strong getting 5 and 1/3 quality innings from rookie Jo-Jo Reyes and were leading 2-1 until Albert Pujols and the Cardinals got homerun happy taking down the Braves 7-2 in 10 innings. Kelly Johnson hit his 10th homerun of the season off of Brad Thompson in the fourth inning to give the Braves a 2-0 lead, but that was the last of the Braves scoring. Pujols tied the game up in the 8th and Skip Schumaker and Scott Rolen broke open the game in the 10th. The Braves head west to San Francisco to start a four game series against the Giants. Thanks to Barry Bonds' homerun chase, the game will be broadcast live on ESPN2 as a part of a ESPN2 doubleheader. Coverage starts at 10 PM/est.

Things are getting a lot worse for Florida Marlins' pitcher Scott Olsen. After being suspended for two games by the Marlins for insubordination, Olsen is now facing the wrath of the popo. Olsen was flagged by the police for going 48 in a 35 mph zone but Olsen was not interested in pulling over. Instead he drove to his Aventura home, where upon arrival, he got out of his car and sat in a plastic chair until hew was confronted by the popo. Scotty, then decided he was a ninja and started kicking. But the popo raised him a voilent act and tasered him! Olsen was charged with driving under the influence and resisting arrest. Watch out Scott, because the popo are on your tail. (source)

He was only 35...Also passing away this weekend, Tammy Faye Messner after a valiant battle with lung cancer. She was 65...Scott Dixon made it three straight after winning at Mid-Ohio on Sunday. He became only the third driver in IRL history to win three straight, following in the footsteps of Kenny Brack and teammate Dan Wheldon...Finally, congratulations to Padraig Harrington on winning the British Open on Sunday. He became the first Irishman to win it in 60 years.

Absence makes the heart want some winning

Braves Update:
They say absence makes the heart grow fonder and since the Braves haven't won a game since Sunday, maybe they were missing that winning feeling. After posting ten runs they made sure they weren't going to leave the ballpark empty handed. Tim Hudson picked up his tenth win of the season and Matt Diaz was one triple away from the cylce in the Braves 10-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Even more impressive, the Braves had 11 of their 12 hits with two outs in the inning. Chuck James will take on Adam Wainwright tonight in the second game of the Bravos four game series. Coverage begins at 7:35 PM/est on FSN.

Games behind NY Mets in NL East: 2.5
Games above .500: 6
NL Wild Card Leader: San Diego Padres/Los Angeles Dodgers

Braves Notes: Julio Franco is happy to be back in a Braves uniform. We're happy to have you back!...Kyle Davies was sent down to Triple A Richmond to make room for Franco on the 25 man roster. Ok now I'm not so sure, I'm happy to have Franco back...Wil Ledezma is back after an extended vacation in Venezuela while he waited for his passport and visa to be reissued after destroying them in a washing machine incident.

NASCAR Update:
The cup boys enjoy a rare weekend off this week in preparation for the Brickyard next week. The Busch Series will be in action at Gateway International Raceway in St. Louis. Catch all the excitement live on ESPN2 starting at 8 PM/est.

Popo in my Crib News:
The New York Post is reporting that the FBI is looking into whether a NBA referee was betting on games, including ones he officiated over the course of the past two seasons. Watch out ref, because the popo are on your tail!

News & Notes: Barry Bonds is just three homeruns away from breaking Hank Aaron's homerun record after blasting two at Wrigley Field on Thursday in the Giants 9-8 loss to the Cubs. Bonds and his San Francisco teammates will be in Milwaukee this weekend for their series against the Brewers, which happens to be where commissioner Bud Selig is based. Even with the close proximity, Selig is not expected to attend any of the games, because you know, he does have a day job...Bad news for the St. Louis Cardinals, ace Chris Carpenter who has not played since April because of an elbow injury will undergo season ending tommy john surgery...Cleveland Indians starter C.C. Sabathia picked up his 13th win of the season, which leads the majors, in the Tribes 7-5 win over the Texas Rangers...A mild earthquake rattled San Francisco early Friday morning. The quake registered a 4.2 on the Rickter Scale...Finally, in the wake of a TAM airplane that crashed into a building in Sao Paulo, Brazil on Wednesday, prosecutors are asking a judge to temporarily close Congonhas airport. There were no survivors on board the plane and at least three people were killed on the ground making it the deadliest crash in Brazil's history.

Heartbreaker, you've got the best of me...

Braves Update:
John Smoltz was flawless in his return to the mound on Wednesday, striking out 11 batters, but in the end, the Braves were unable to give him the win, losing 5-4 in 15 innings to the Cincinnati Reds. Ken Griffey, Jr. recorded his 2,500th career hit during the game. The Braves hope to turn things around against the St. Louis Cardinals with Tim Hudson pitching. Game starts at 7:35 PM/est on FSN.

Games behind NY Mets in NL East: 2.5
Games above .500: 5
NL Wild Card Leader: San Diego Padres

Braves Notes: Well, it's not Tom Glavine, but I'll take it. Julio Franco will be returning to the Braves after being released by the New York Mets last week. The Braves have five division titles with Franco in a Braves uniform and zero since he left after the 2005 season...Kyle Davies is being moved into the bullpen after playing less than one inning in his previous start. The Braves hope Davies can act as a multiple innings reliever...The Braves optioned pitcher Joey Devine to triple A Richmond.

NASCAR Update:
Aric Amirola will split time in the 01 Army car for Ginn Racing with veteran Mark Martin for the rest of the season. Amirola will also honor his five scheduled Busch starts with Joe Gibbs Racing.

Jeff Gordon seems to be having a good time being a dad. Luckily for him, he'll have the week off to hang out with his wife and new baby girl.

News & Notes: Johan Santana gave up three runs in his first loss in six starts for the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday. The Twins once again lost to the NL Central division leader, the Detroit Tigers, this time 3-2...LeBron James will host the season premiere of "Saturday Night Live" in September. James follows in the footsteps of fellow athletes Michael Jordan, Derek Jeter, Jeff Gordon and Peyton Manning...It was a scary scene for New Yorkers on Wednesday when a steam pipe exploded near Grand Central Terminal during the middle of rush hour. Luckily, only one person was killed and 26 people were injured. Judging from the pictures, this could have been much worse...Finally, Emmy nominations were announced. Congrats to Jenna Fisher, Rain Wilson, Steve Carrell and the cast of "The Office" on their nominations. Also shout outs to Vanessa Williams, America Ferrera and the cast of "Ugly Betty on their nods. But seriously, why give nominations to "Two and a Half Men" do these people know what quality television is? Obviously not, since "Friday Night Lights" and Lauren Graham were totally snubbed!

Check this out: Centerfielder for the Detroit Tigers, Curtis Granderson, has been using his downtime to blog for ESPN. His entries are not award winning, but with his humor and honesty, they are definately a must read for even a casual baseball fan.

Oh, come on!

The ESPY's were taped last week and after looking at some of the red carpet pictures I realized that these athletes are seriously in of need some help. Many showed up in a finely tailored suits with/without a tie and looked great. But a few of them need to fire their stylist.

Dan Wheldon (view images)

Dan Wheldon already has an IRL championship and Indy 500 win in his backpocket, but that does not excuse this mess of an outfit. Yeah, you're British, but no one should be wearing pants that tight. I will applaud you on putting down the white sunglasses, but that's about all the props you'll be getting from me!

Michael Phelps

There's just something off with this outfit. Maybe it's that he unbuttoned one too many buttons. Or that his sleeves don't seem like they are the same length? Oh, and the sunglasses are really not flattering.

Quinton Jackson

Normally this outfit would work (less the chain, I hate jewelry on guys) but with everyone else in suits, he's just way too underdressed.

James Blake (center)

Ok, so the t-shirt under the blazer look is bad enough when you're rocking it with jeans, but when it's a full on suit and you only have your hanes undershirt on, it really doesn't work. Seriously, did you spill something on your dress shirt and was like, "shoot I guess this will work?"

Hall of Fame Ugly
Let's be honest, fashion disasters are not just limited to the ESPY Awards. Many athletes have had blunders on other red carpets.

Tony Stewart @ ACMs (with Vince Gill)

Where do I start? I imagine he was wearing the orange shirt because he is sponsored by Home Depot and he was giving out the HD Humanitarian Award, so I'll slightly allow it, but what is up with the plaid jacket? And was the plaid too much as a full suit? Or do you enjoy mixing and matching your formal wear? This isn't a bathing suit where you go with the print on the top and the solid on the bottom. And even then you take a color from the print and match it with the solid bottoms.

Jimmie Johnson (l to r Brian Vickers, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., J.J. and Keifer Sutherland) @ premiere of NASCAR 3D

I know some people get bored with the solid dress shirt, but that's why there's striped or even a subtle plaid. But Jimmie Johnson's shirt makes my head hurt.

Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez @ 40/40 All-Star Party

Compared to Jimmie Johnson's shirt, I guess Pudge's t-shirt is ok, but that's only compared to Jimmie's!

Matt Leinart @ AE Party at Sundance Film Festival

Since hitting the party scene, I'll admit Matt's stepped up his fashion game, but that doesn't mean we can't point out this eye-sore. I get the whole down jacket thing, it's cold, the jacket's warm and bonus, you get to look like a human marshmallow from the waist up. But what really bothers me is that it looks like his jacket is made out of garbage bags and cotton balls.

Dale Earnhardt, Jr. @ VMAs in 2001

Dale, Jr. is very, very hit or miss when it comes to fashion. For the most part everything but his hair works. But in this picture it's not only the blonde highlights that bother me, it's the leather blazer that really drives me crazy. I guess, we can all look back on pictures from when we were younger and think, "what the hell was I wearing?" This must be one for Junior!

Downpour

Braves Update:
What should have been an easy sweep has turned into a dissapointment for the Braves. The Cincinnati Reds Bronson Arroyo pitched seven shut out innings only to watch his bullpen practically give his win away as the Braves were able to post four runs in the eight and another in the ninth but they still fell short losing 6-5. The Braves look to stop the sweep with John Smoltz returning to the mound on Wednesday. He'll go up against Aaron Harang. Watch the game live at 1:05 PM/est on TBS.

Games behind NY Mets in NL East: 2.5
Games above .500: 6
NL Wild Card Leader: San Diego Padres

Braves Notes: Jarrod Saltamacchia, Tim Hudson, Matt Diaz and Jeff Francoeur spread some festive cheer to young Braves fans at the Scottish Rite, Egleston and Hughes Spadling hospitals for the Braves Christmas in July...The Braves are still without reliever Wilfredo Ledezema after he had a washing machine incident over the all-star break. Ledezema, who had gone home to Venezuela, apparently washed a pair of pants that had his passport and visa in its pocket. Both were distroyed and he is waiting for a new visa to be issued. The Braves are hoping he can rejoin them later in the week or early next week.

NASCAR Update:
Terry Labonte will once again be subbing for Michael Waltrip in the #55 Napa Auto Parts Toyota, this time it will be at the Brickyard. Labonte is the 1984 and 1996 Cup Series champion.

Travis Kvapil was docked 25 championship driver points, his truck owner Jack Roush was penalized 25 owner points and crew chiref Mike Beam was fined $10,000 for a rules infraction found during post-race inspection at Kentucky Speedway on July 14th.

Popo in my Crib News:
Atlanta Falcon's quarterback, Michael Vick was indicted on charges of sponsoring a dogfight operation on Monday. He and three others were also charged with competitive dogfighting, procurring and training and conducting enterprises across state lines. I hope the Falcons have a competant backup QB, because Mikey might be out for a while. Watch out Michael, because the popo are on your tail!

News & Notes: Thanks in part to Jeremy Accardo's balk in the ninth inning that brought in the tying run, the Yankees were able to defeat the Toronto Blue Jays, 3-2 in 10 off of a Robinson Cano single...The Miami Dolphins released quarterback Daunte Culpepper on Monday...Here's a suprise, cyclist Patrik Sinkewitz tested positive for high levels of testostrerone before competing in the Tour de France. He has since dropped out after a crash...Finally, in a cautionary tale news Anastasia Rodinova was disqualified on Tuesday after she hit a tennis ball towards fans rooting for her oponent at the Cincinnati Women's Open. Rodinova became the second player on the WTA tour to be ousted this year. Remember, tennis is different from football or NASCAR the players can and will hurt you with a 100 mph serve, "accidently."

Check this out: Sarah Buxton is an amazing singer song writter whose debut EP Almost my Record was released on itunes last week. You can get a sneak preview of her album here. My favorite is "Innocence."

Separated at Birth

It was announced on Monday that Eric Wedge had extended his contract with the Cleveland Indians through 2010. While the Indians are currently in the hunt for the AL Central title, during his five years with the team, the Tribe have failed to make it into the playoffs.

Runny nose

Braves Update:
Kyle Davies didn't even record an out in the first inning before Bobby Cox pulled the right hander. But Kyle wasn't the only one to blame for the 10-3 loss to the Cinicinnati Reds, the Braves offense left 14 runners on base. The Braves look to get back on track with Jo-Jo Reyes on the mound to face the Reds' Bronson Arroyo. The game starts at 7:35 PM/est on SS.

Games behind NY Mets in NL East: 1 1/2
Games above .500: 7
NL Wild Card Leader: San Diego Padres

Random Quote:
For many fans -- especially those who grew up in markets without a major-league team -- their first introduction to baseball on TV was listening to Skip Caray, Pete Van Wieren and Ernie Johnson Sr. call Braves games on TBS. Now, as TBS proceeds with its final summer of Braves telecasts, Caray nears what he expects will be his final appearance ever on the Atlanta-based network. Van Wieren already is off TV, having been re-assigned to Braves radio exclusively this season. TBS -- which has carried Braves games since it became a national ''superstation'' in 1977 -- instead will air an MLB game of the week on Sunday afternoons beginning next season. The departure of the Braves from TBS will be nostalgic for some viewers. ''It will be sad to say goodbye,'' said Caray, who is filling in for son Chip or Joe Simpson on 10 of TBS' 70 Braves telecasts this season. 'People come up to me and say, `Geez, we miss you.' I don't know the date in August, but it will be my last [national] appearance on TBS unless they televise my funeral when I die.'' That dry wit will be missed from Caray, 67, who still works on radio for the Braves. ''They want younger guys,'' he said. -- Miami Herald

NASCAR Update:
Ginn Racing is expected to announce that it will consolidate into two teams with Regan Smith running the remainder of the season in the #14 car.

Roush-Fenway is expected to announce that Greg Biffle will be back in the #16 Ford in 2008 with 3M as his sponsor.

Popo in my Crib News:
Country singer Blake Shelton came to the rescue of his uncle Dempsey Byrd on July 9th. Seems a would be burglar had broke into Byrd's home, when he called his sister and Balke's mom Dorothy Shackleford. Blake and Dorothy rushed over to Dempsey's home. Blake knocked on the door and told the man "hey, you're in my house man." (How eloquent!) The man, James Robert Gastineau waited on the porch until authorities arrested him. He is charged with first degree burglary and public intoxication. Watch out James, because the popo are on your tail!

News & Notes: The Oakland A's traded catcher Jason Kendall to the Chicago Cubs for catcher Rob Bowen and minor leaguer Jerry Blevens...The Marlins have suspended Scott Olsen for two games without pay for insubordination and conduct detrimental to the team on Monday...Yankees legend Joe DiMaggio's diary is up for sale. The 2000 page epic was written from 1982 to 1993...Finally, all you Carrie Underwood fans who have been dying for a new album only have to wait a few more months, when the ACM and CMA female vocalist of the year releases her sophomore disc on October 23rd.

Check this out: While "My Boys" second season doesn't start until July 30th, here's a sneak peak to tide you over. You can also watch episodes from last season if you need to catch up or are in the mood for an awesome show!

Monday, Monday

Braves Update:
The Braves seem to be picking up right where they left off after sweeping the Pittsburgh Pirates this weekend at Turner Field thanks in part to a clutch hit by Jeff Francoeur on Saturday and Buddy Carlyle on Sunday. Carlyle allowed a first inning homerun to Freddie Sanchez but then settled in going 8 innings and allowing only 4 hits. Edgar Renteria had four hits and drove in a run in the 5-1 win. The Braves move onto a series against the Cincinnati Reds on Monday. Coverage begins at 7:05 PM/est on SS.

Games behind NY Mets in NL East: 1 1/2
Games above. 500: 8
NL Wild Card Leader: San Diego Padres

Braves Notes: Barring any set backs, John Smoltz should return to the mound on Wednesday. Smoltz had been placed on the DL with shoulder issues.

NASCAR Update:
Tony Stewart pulled out his first win of the season and career win 30 on Sunday at Chicagoland. Stewart and Jimmie Johnson's cars seem to be the class of the field all day until Johnson had a massive tire malfuction which put him into the wall opening up the door for Stewart. DEI had a pretty good run going until 58 laps to go when Dale Earnhardt, Jr. lost his power steering. His teammate, Martin Truex, Jr. later ran into engine problems, relegating the teams to 19th and 39th respectively.
Race Results Standings

Shout outs to: Casey Mears, after taking the pole on Friday, Mears came in fifth on Sunday.

Random Quote: "I'm taking this momentum on vacation. I've got a case of Schlitz that I fully intend on getting to the bottom of the cardboard box tonight, even if have to do it by myself." -Tony Stewart on his win (source)

News & Notes: The Philadelphia Phillies became the first team to hit 10,000 losses after their 10-2 defeat to the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. The Atlanta Braves would be the next in line for 10,000 standing at over 9600 defeats...Speaking of the Braves, they weren't the only team to bring out the broom this weekend, the Minnesota Twins, Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs also swept their series this weekend...Update last weeks blog, Rickey Henderson was named first base coach and Howard Johnson was made the Mets batting coach. I still say Henderson's hiring had something to do with Julio Franco's firing!...In other Mets news, former Brave Tom Glavine picked up his 298th career win on Saturday. Only two more to go...Congratulations to Rebecca Romijn and Jerry O'Connell on the wedding this weekend...Also tying the knot, Sarah Gore (Al Gore's youngest daughter) and Bill Lee...Former first lady, Lady Bird Johnson was put to rest on Sunday afternoon in Stonewall, TX. She was buried next to husband President Lyndon Baines Johnson. Lady Bird died on Wednesday at the age of 94...Finally, Harry Poter still has the magic touch after bringing in over $77 million at the US box office and over the weekend. When added with its Wednesday and Thursday gross, Porter made $140 million in just five days.

*Matching Game Answers*
