Chipper Jones is not really chipper

We don’t know how we missed this, but we were tipped off about it yesterday. Seems Chipper Jones is not exactly thrilled by the fact that David Wright won a Gold Glove for his performance at third base this season. Jones has made no secret of the fact that he was working very hard to pick up his first ever Gold Glove. But honestly, can you blame him for being a little miffed? David Wright has 21 errors, fifth highest in the NL and his field percentage wasn’t much better.

“I’m a little confused by the final tally — that’s a head-scratcher for me.”
Jones told the Atlanta Journal Consitution.
But it wasn’t just Wright’s selection but the fact that other third baseman were snubbed.

“I wouldn’t have been disappointed had someone like Feliz or Ramirez won it,”
referring to Chicago’s Aramiz Ramirez and San Francisco’s Pedro Feliz.
But Wright’s win has become a symptom of the misunderstanding of what makes a Gold Glover. It’s not their offensive numbers, which were similar to Chipper Jones’, but for their defense. When tipped to that theory, Jones was quick to point out the Florida Marlins Miguel Cabrera who is a major slugger at the plate but not really a stopper in the field.

We would be crazy if we didn’t mention our favorite Jones quote of the article,

“When I find out [Wright won] I was speechless, for quite some time. Certainly the guys with the least amount of errors and best fielding percentage quite obviously didn’t win it.”
Thank you Chipper Jones for your unwavering ability to give us an amazing quote. And of course for kicking ass on the field.

It’s been fun blogging with you,
