Bobby Knight: The New Dick Cheney

Two people said they were hit by pellets shot from either Texas Tech coach Bobby Knight or his hunting buddy. The first incident took place on October 20th in Lubbox, TX. Mary Ann Chumley said she was hit on the foot by a stray bullet but that the coach apologized.

"He said, 'I was shooting a bird and I followed it, and I shouldn't have done that, and I know that,"' Chumley said. "He apologized and I accepted his apology. As far as I was concerned it was over."
But his other target has not been as kind. James Simpson says he was shot in the neck and back because he yelled at Knight for hunting too close to his property. Simpson claims three stray bullets had landed in his yard when he started to yell at him. As he turned his back to clean his pool he was hit two times.

"He did it intentionally," Simpson said of the pellets that hit him.
Simpson was hit about 100 yards from where Ms. Chumley was shot.

Knight for his part, is not too excited about this recent development. He told reporters

"That's all been taken care of, that's over with," Knight said. "You haven't heard anything from that guy for two weeks. That's done. I got no comment on that whatsoever because that's absolute (expletive)."

But this isn't the first time Knight has accidently shot a person instead of the animal he was hunting. In 1999, while still coaching at Indiana, he hit his friend Thomas Mikunda with 16 pellets. Knight claimed his finger sliped causing him to nail his buddy. The pair were in Wisconsin at the time. Bobby paid a fine of $582.10. His friend later "accused Knight of coercing him into bakcing his version of the accident to avoid problems while coaching at Indiana." The two settled. What was Knight worried about, ruining his image? I think when he threw a chair and then hit one of his players, his image was about shot.
