Baseball Update:
Chicago Cubs outfielder Alfonso Soriano will miss five days after he fractured his right middle finger doing fly ball drills on Sunday.
Marlon Anderson is ok, but teammate Ryan Church will miss a few days with a concussion after the pair crashed into each other going after an Andruw Jones fly ball on Saturday. Kids, it's just spring training!
In other Mets injury news, Carlos Delgado will be sidelined for a couple of days with a sore right hip.
Reds shortstop Alex Gonzalez will likely be out of commission for the season opener after being diagonised with a fracture in his left knee.
San Diego Padres pitcher Jake Peavy is ok after being hit by a Mike Morse liner.
Rocco Baldelli had two at bats in the Deviless Rays 5-2 win over the Blue Jays. It was good sign for Tampa since Baldelli has been out of action since May 15th of 2007. But can the oft-injured outfielder stay healthy enough to make it to opening day and beyond? Only time will tell.
The Milwaukee Brewers renewed first baseman Prince Fielder's contract at $670,000 after Fielder finished third in MVP voting. Fielder made $415,000 in 2007 but he's still not happy with the bump saying he'd rather have gotten an multi-year contract. NL Rookie of the Year Ryan Braun had his contracted renewed at $455,000 and right fielder Corey Hart's contract was renewed at $444,000.
The Marlins upped Hanley Ramirez's salary to $439,000. And Prince Fielder is complaining about his pay increase.
Speaking of disappointed players, Cole Hamels wasn't too thrilled with the Phillies renewal of his contract. While Hamels got a 25% raise giving his $500,000 salary for the season, he'd rather have a mutli-year deal in place. I think Ryan Howard's $10 million put the Phillies in a little bit of a budgetary crisis Cole.
People like Hank Steinbrenner make my job so much easier. After claiming there was no such thing as Red Sox Nation, Boston Principal owner John Henry offered Steinbrenner an option to become the newest member of the so called made-up Nation. Hank opted out of the offer but called Henry a great guy. Something tells me these two will give me many many more posts to come.
Former Indians backstop Tim Laker says he regrets taking steriods.
Ooops, seems Barry Bonds failed two steriods tests after his grand jury testimony was unsealed.
Nascar Update:
Following his win at Las Vegas, Carl Edwards had his car impounded by Nascar for missing a lid to his oil tank. Five Nationwide cars were penalized for a similiar violation following the Daytona race so it wouldn't be a surprise if Edwards had a different guy maning the pit box for the next six weeks.
Jeff Gordon's crash on Sunday was so violent his radiator flew out from under the hood and landed some feet way from his spinning car. So it should come as no surprise that the four time champ is advocating putting safer barriers on the inside walls as well as the outside walls.
After failing to qualify for the UAW-Dodge 400, Red Bull is considering temporarily pulling A.J. Allmendinger from his Toyota. Allemendinger has yet to qualify for a race this season and had a similiar grow pains in 2007. His teammate, Brian Vickers has made all three races. This just proves the point, just because you're good at Open Wheel doesn't mean you'll be good in stock cars. Race in the Trucks and Nationwide Series, then move to Cup.
If his appeal fails, Robby Gordon is considering doing the double, both the Indy 500 and the Coca-Cola 600. I say, even if you do win your appeal do the double!
Mark Martin's win in the Nationwide Series on Saturday gave Dale Earnhardt, Jr. his first win as owner of JR Motorsports.
