Lenox Industrial Tools 301

Winner: Kurt Busch

Recap: For Tony Stewart, the Lenox Industrial Tools 301 proved to be all talk and no action. After leading 132 of 284 laps Stewart’s pit strategy did him in. But the rain couldn’t have fallen at a better time for Kurt Busch, who took the rain shortened event. The day was also not very kind to Dale Earnhardt, Jr. who got rammed in the back by Jamie McMurray, injuring his day on lap 271. The caution spelled doom for the leaders, including Stewart who chose to pit leaving Kurt Busch and others in the catbird seat on lap 280 when Clint Bowyer and Sam Hornish, Jr. were involved in crash slowing the field for a caution. Four laps later the race was permanently halted thanks to a serve storm. But right before the cars headed down pit lane, Juan Pablo Montoya punted new bff Kyle Busch resulting in a 25th place finish for the points leader and two lap penalty for Montoya. Who says New Hampshire races are boring? Sometimes it all comes down to the final few laps.

Race Results Points Standings Photos

Shout Outs: Michael Waltrip finished 2nd, like I could give this award to anyone else. The struggling owner/driver benefited from pit strategy, but who cares, the guy came in second. I also have to give props to Casey Mears who finished seventh. This weekend probably was very difficult with the announcement he’ll be leaving Hendrick at the end of the season, so a seventh place finish was just what the doctor ordered, although a win would have been nice too, but let’s not get too greedy.

Disappointments: New Hampshire just seemed like another one of those crazy weekends Tony Stewart and his team has endured this season. I know he’s a late bloomer, but it’s almost July and Smoke still hasn’t broken through with a victory. After pacing the second half of the event, a 13th place finish could not be described as anything but disappointing.

81 down, 81 to go

Baseball Update:
The Rays finish the first half of the season with a 4-3 win over the Pirates. The win combined with the Boston Red Sox 3-2 loss to the Astros pushed the Rays into first place in the AL East.

The Tigers finish off the first half of the season with a 4-3 win over the Rockies marking the first time all season they have been above .500. Unfortunately the good times hit a snag when they placed Magglio Ordonez on the DL with a pulled muscle in his right side.

The Marlins' second baseman Dan Uggla missed Sunday's game after leaving the previous night's match-up with the Diamondbacks with a sprained ankle. But his presence wasn't missed too bad as Jorge Cantu played hero in the 9th singling in Jeremy Hermida in the Fish's 4-3 victory.

Also hitting the DL is the Twins Michael Cuddyer with a finger injury. But they showed no signs of slowing down blanking the Brewers, 5-0. The Brewers activated their expensive and so far disappointing closer Eric Gagne from the DL.

Ryan Church played in his first game since being placed on the DL with a concussion on Sunday. He went 2-for-4 while pitcher Oliver Perez shined in the Mets, 3-1 win over the Yankees. The win helped the Mets avoid a home sweep by their cross borough rivals.

Bad news for the Bombers, outfielder and sometimes DH Hideki Matsui could need surgery on his ailing left knee.

In the other intercity series, the Chicago White Sox hit up the Cubs, 5-1 to complete their South Side sweep. Just one week prior, it was the Cubs bringing out the brooms at Wrigley. Oh, what a difference a week and new location can make.

It was a tough battle between to disappointing teams, but apparently San Diego is a little worse, falling to the Mariners, 9-2. The win gave Seattle the series sweep.

The Phillies are just struggling after losing to the Rangers, 5-1. Philadelphia is now just 2-8 in their last 10 games. Wow, I know Philly stuggles early, but maybe this is payback for their super hot start.

The Angels made up for Saturday's bizzare 1-0 loss to the Dodgers, with a 1-0 win of their own. John Lackey went 8.2 inning allowing just three hits and no runs while Mike Napoli's RBI single in the second inning proved to be the game winner.

The Blue Jays got a 1-0 win of their own after taking out the Braves on Sunday. Alex Rios went 2-for-4 including two doubles and the game winning RBI in the sixth. The loss marked the Braves 23rd consecutive one run road loss.

The Braves could also be without all-star third baseman Chipper Jones. Jones, who has missed more than a week with an injured quad, appears to be headed to the DL. What a blow to the injury depleted Braves that would be!

Nascar Update:
Congrats to Ron Hornaday and Tony Stewart for win the Truck and Nationwide Series races this weekend. Check back for more on Cup Series race at New Hampshire.

Speaking of Stewart, he could be eying that new opening at Hendrick Motorsports. Wait, but I thought Mark Marin was destined for the #5 ride. Oh silly season, you've confused me again.

Clint Bowyer signed a three year extension to stay at Richard Childress Racing.

Nascar could lift the testing ban. I'm on the fence about this. For those that say this will widen the gap, I can see their point, but it's not like the Hendrick and Roush drivers aren't testing at other tracks. But it still is an advantage to test on the tracks you race on.

News&Notes: Congrats to Spain on their 1-0 win over Germany to take their first EURO championship in 44 years...The Minnesota Wild traded the rights to forward Brian Rolston to the Tampa Bay Lightning for a draft pick...19 year old Inbee Park became the youngest female to win a US Women's Open Cup. Goodness, do I feel old and unaccomplished...Michael Phelps and Katie Hoff both broke IM World Records at the US Olympic Trials...Congrats to Tony Kanaan for win the IndyCar race at Richmond on Saturday...Finally in athlete love news, Chris Evert and Greg Norman wed in a lavish ceremony in the Bahamas over the weekend. While soccer stud Cristiano Ronaldo and his new lady love have been spotted vacationing and F1 star Lewis Hamilton stepped out with a Pussycat Doll. And that's it for the celebrity blogger portion.

Hot and Sticky

Baseball Update:
Ever wonder what would happen to you if you choked your GM, well your situation is anything like Shawn Chacon's, you get fired!

With all of the off-the-field mess the Astros are going through, they were able to put everything aside to take out the Rangers, 7-2. Wandy Rodriguez pitched eight magical innings for the Astros who are now one pitcher short.

Scary scene for the Rangers as their star slugger Josh Hamilton had to leave the game early after being hit by a pitch by Wandy Rodriguez in the first inning. X-rays were negative and he is listed as day-to-day.

Clete Thomas played hero for the Tigers and all he had to do was draw a walk, in Detroit's 3-2 win over the Cardinals in 10 innings. With Thomas' walk the Tigers, Curtis Granderson, who hit a single to start the inning, came in to score the winning run.

Rich Harden struck out 11, as the A's blanked the Phillies 5-0. Harden's 8 inning performance probably upped his stock in the trade market.

Also fanning 11, was the Indians Cliff Lee, who improved to 11-1 with the Tribe's 4-1 victory over the Giants. Jamey Carroll drove in two runs including a third inning triple in the win.

Matt Garza's one run complete game shut out helped propel the Rays passed the Marlins, 6-1 completing the sunshine showdown sweep. (Say that 10 times fast)

Justin Morneau got the rally going for the Twins, who are now at nine straight wins after their 4-3 win over the Padres. Morneau's two run homer in the fourth brouth the Twins within a run and was followed by his single in the fifth that drove in Scott Baker to tie the game at 3 a piece. Brian Buscher drove in the winning run in the sixth.

Willie Randolph was replaced by Lou Piniella as a coach for the NL All-Star team, because having Willie on the team wouldn't have been akward at all. The move marked the second time Manager Clint Hurdle passed up having former Yankee Manager Joe Torre on the team. Speaking of akward...

The Yankees/Pirates game was washed out after two plus innings of play. The Yankees were non-too-thrilled with the long delay in calling the game, especially with their day/night double header against the Mets on Friday. Not to mention a wasted start by Mike Mussina.

The fan that caught Ken Griffey, Jr.'s 600th homerun plans to auction it off. I'm all for making a quick buck, it just seems so wrong to auction it off and not give it Griffey.

Nascar Update:
It seems so weird to go from Sonoma to New Hampshire without stopping Daytona first, but New Hampshire we go. Off to a one mile flat track that offers limited passing on the difficult track. Clint Bowyer is the latest winner but can he do it again, or could Jeff Gordon or Tony Stewart finally put a one in the win column? You'll have to tune into TNT to find out. Watch the Lenox Industrial Tools 301 at 12:30 PM/est to find out.

Roush Fenway Racing took their partnership to the ballpark to celebrate Roush Fenway Racing Day at Fenway Park.

It's official, Casey Mears is out of the #5 car at Hendrick Motorsports after the 2008 season. Too bad, but I'm sure he'll pop up on someone's radar.

Could kudzu be the answer to nascar's prayers?

Dan Davis will step down from his position of director of Ford Racing Technology after 11 years. He will be replaced by Brian Wolfe.

News&Notes: Derrick Rose was selected number one overall in the NBA draft of Thursday night. Click here to find out who your favorite team picked...O.J. Mayo and Kevin Love did not stay at their drafted homes very long after the T'Wolves sent Mayo to Memphis for Love...The Nets did some trading as well sending Richard Jefferson to Milwaukee for Yi Jianlian and Bobby Simmons...Martin Straka will not return to the Rangers next season, opting to go back to his former Czech Club HC Lasselsberger Plzen...Meanwhile Scott Niedermayer has decided to put retirement on hold and return to the Ducks...Like it's not expensive enough to own season tickets, the Giants will charge a $20,000 one time fee to a lucky set of fans whose seats are in lower level of the stadium. All ticket owners will be assessed at least a $1,000 personal ticket lincense fee. Of course the Jets are looking to up their Stadium counterparts possibly charing $50,000 to watch their team get desimated, but there's the Jets for you, your dumber, less coordinated younger brother...Spain roughed up Russia 3-0 to advance to the EURO 2008 Finals where they'll take on Germany...Itlay fired their head coach Robertos Donadoni after falling the quarter finals. He'll be replaced by Marcello Lippi...Maria Sharapova and Andy Roddick both were upset at Wimbeldon on Thursday.

Underdog to the rescue

Baseball Update:
Congratulations to Frenso State on winning the College World Series. The Bulldogs knocked off those other bulldogs (Georgia) with their 6-1 win becoming the losest seated team to ever win a CWS title.

A 10 run fifth inning sealed a win for the Rays. Carl Crawford started the offensive explosion in the fifth with his 2nd homer of the game which helped to destroy their sunshine state rival Marlins, 15-3.

Talk about turn arounds, after being blown out by the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Yankees shut down the Bucs, 10-0 giving Joba Chamberlain his first career win as a starter. Chamberlain went 6 and two thirds innings without giving up a run.

The Pirates acquired reliever Denny Bautista from the Tigers for minor league pitcher Kyle Pearson.

After taking a paid day off, David Wright came back strong, knocking two homeruns in the Mets 8-2 win over the Mariners. Jose Reyes also hit one out of the park in the win. The Mets have claimed former Yankee Andy Phillips off of waivers. Phillips can offer the Mets a cheap alternative to struggling first baseman Carlos Delgado.

Gary Sheffield has had a very productive two days since being activated from the DL. On Tuesday he hit a homerun and on Wednesday he drove in the game winning run in the Tigers 8-7 come-from-behind win over the Cardinals.

If the Royals could play every game against the National League, they wouldn't be quite the laughing stock of the AL Central. After beating the Rockies, 4-2, they are now 12-3 in interleague play this season.

The Twins are probably in the same boat notching their eighth straight win on Wednesday, beating the Padres, 8-3. All eight wins have come against National League clubs.

Barry Zito seemed more like himself in the Giants 4-1 win over the Indians. The marked his third of the season. If you switched his salary with Tim Lincecum's then Zito wouldn't seem like such a bust.

Kyle Kendrick helped stop the Phillies skid at six with an eight inning shut out performance in the Phillies 4-0 victory over the A's.

Tim Wakefield came out the victor in the battle of the over 40 pitchers. The Diamondbacks hitters could not get a handle of Timmy's crazy knuckle ball striking out six times and managing only two hits off of him while the Red Sox faired much better against Randy Johnson in their 5-0 win.

David Ortiz looks to be weeks away from returning from his wrist injury.

Aaron Boone became the fourth member of his family to achieve 1,000 major league hits, joining his grandfather Ray (1,260), father Bob (1,838) and brother Bret (1,775). He also became the 1,171st major leaguer to reach that feat. The Nationals also won, defeating the Angels, 5-4 as LA's Vlad Guerrero missed the game with flu like symptoms.

Shawn Chacon will be out indefinitely after choking Astros GM Ed Wade and throwing him to the ground. Wade had demoted Chacon to the bullpen and Shawn was not a happy camper saying "I just lost it." Well, yes Latrell, you did lose it. The team has suspended him for his actions.

Bad news, Barry Bonds will not play for an independent league. Man, I totally thought he'd makek a nice addition to the Long Island Ducks. If John Rocker can do it, anyone can.

Nascar Update:
Reports have 2 time Cup Champion Tony Stewart shopping for sponsors as whispers are pretty much deafening that Stewart will jump Gibbs ship after his contract is up and being his own team in 2009. Tony would partner with Hass CNC Racing's two car team and reports have Ryan Newman moving from Penske over to the new team.

AJ Allmendinger debuts his new column on Yahoo! Sports. Click here to see his first piece.

David Stremme is hoping to make his way back into the Sprint Cup Series. Good luck with that David. Although scratch that sarcastic remark, with the way drivers are recycled, I'm sure he'll be back with a sub quality team in no time.

Click here for an update on this year's silly season.

CBS Sports looks at the have and have nots in Nascar.

News&Notes: With tonight's NBA draft, the trade winds have started to blow in. The Pacers have traded Jermaine O'Neal to Toronto in exchange for T.J. Ford, Rasho Nesterovic and the No. 17 overall pick...Click here to see who else is wheeling and dealing...They have a new head coach, so why not lock up one of your biggest stars? That's what the Tampa Bay Lightning are working on if rumors of a nine year extension with Vincent Lecavalier are true...Germany edged Turkey, 3-2, to make it into the EURO 2008 Finals...Unfortunately, a storm that blew threw Austria made it almost impossible for fans to watch the thrilling game...Meanwhile Thierry Henry says he can see himself playing in America. Ah, America, where talented athletes come to play out their final years (see David Beckham and any F1 driver who is currently in Nascar)...A knee injury has force Lindsay Davenport out of Wimbledon...Finally, somewhere in Europe my brother is vomitting because the Giants have locked up offesnive lineman Chris Snee with a six year, $43.5 million contract.

Hump Day Hair

There are many reasons to go for the crew cut. It's easy to maintain, saves you money on shampoo and conditioner, keeps you cool in the summer time, and some ladies even think it's very sexy. But for some of these players nature may have been the deciding factor is keeping their hair so short. Whatever the reason, I'm praising these players for their hair decisions it this week's anti-hump day hair special.

Spotted...Mets Statue of Liberty

Last week I had mentioned that there would be various Statues of Liberty positioned around New York City to help promote the All-Star game. Well I had my first siting, unfortunately it was the Mets one and not say the Braves one (which frankly, I don't know if they'll have that one floating around, and the poor Red Sox one, that would be defaced in a hurry.)

Anyway, this statue was spotted outside of Penn Station. And don't worry, if I find more I'll snap a picture and give you its location, like my own personal savanger hunt. If you see one, don't hesitate to email me (popoinmycrib@gmail.com) the picture and location and I'll give you credit.

Getting Tossed

Baseball Update:
The Cubs had gone 14 straight games without a loss at Wrigley. That was all until the Orioles came to town, making their first appearance count with a 7-5 win.

The Yankees first trip to Pittsburgh was not exactly memorable...well maybe you could say it's something the Bombers would hope to foget, getting pounded 12-5 by the Pirates.

Meanwhile, they're cross town rivals were not fairing any better getting blanked 11-0 by the Mariners. Both Carlos Beltran and Manager Jerry Manuel were tossed, but instead of getting the team fired up, they just layed down like the girls they are quickly becoming. We'll have to see if they can redeam themselves on Wednesday.

It's safe to say, Bronson Arroyo has had better starts. Lasting just one inning, Arroyo gave up 10 earned runs in the Blue Jays 14-1 killing of the Reds. The Blue Jays amassed an astonishing 22 hits in the win.

The Red Sox rallied in the eighth inning driving in four runs including the game winner, a Jason Veritek single that gave them the 5-4 win over the Diamondbacks. Kevin Youkilis, who left Monday's game early after being hit in the eye in between innings, was sent to a specialist, missing Tuesday's game.

The Twins launched two solo shots off of Padres closer Trevor Hoffman in their 3-1 win. Brendan Harris hit the go ahead homer with Brian Buscher's being an insurance run.

The Brewers held off a late game rally by the Braves, hanging onto their 4-3 win. Mark Teixeira continued his blistering streak with a two-run homer in the ninth and Chipper Jones missed his fourth consecutive start with a quad injury, although he did have a pinch hit in the game. John Smoltz is comtemplating his future following shoulder surgery a few weeks ago.

The Tigers activated DH Gary Sheffield on Tuesday and he responded with a homerun. Unfortunately, it was not enough as Detroit fell to the Cardinals, 8-4.

The unstoppable Phillies are definately in a funk, dropping their sixth straight with their 5-2 loss to the A's.

Major League Baseball and the Union met to discuss maple bats and the meeting could not come any sooner after homeplate umpire Brian O'Nora was struck by a shattered Miguel Olivo bat forcing him to leave the game.

All-Star game tickets go onsale to the public today at 10 AM. Click here for details.

Nascar Update:
Joey Logano will not being making a Nationwide Series start in New Hampshire this weekend. Instead the Connecticut native, will have to watch fellow JGR driver Tony Stewart race around the track in the #20. Kyle Busch will be in the #18 for Joe Gibbs while Denny Hamlin will drive the #32 for Braun Racing.

Speaking of Stewart and Busch they were joined by fellow Cup driver Matt Kenseth at Madison International Speedway in Wisconsin competing in a super late-model race.

Martin Truex, Jr. is reportedly working on a deal to stay at DEI in 2009 and beyond. Don't do it Martin. Run like the wind...and don't look back!

News&Notes: Tiger Woods underwent reconstructive surgery on his left knee...Listen up MSG, the NHL does not play around. They just suspended Anaheim Ducks owner Henry Samueli indefinitely. Although he also plead guilty to on ecounty of lying to the SEC, but still, they don't play around...Even though they couldn't pry Evgeni Malkin away from the Penguins, the new Russian hockey league, Continental Hockey League does want some NHL talent in its league. (Could I have used the word "league" more times in that sentence?)...Here's a new Kate Law, don't email things you wouldn't want used in a trail. That's a lesson current Sonics owner Clay Bennett has been learning the hard way. But lucky for him a former U.S. senator that was hired by the city of Seattle hadn't heard about the Kate Law and sent emails that basically said he would try to fleece Bennett out of so much money he would have to sell the team to a local owner. Uh-oh...Finally, Terry Bradshaw admitted he did steriods in the 70s.

Popo News

There were so many law related stories yesterday that I decided to give you a run down of what happened.

Carmelo Anthony entered a guilty plea to the lesser charge of driving under the influence. He was sentenced one year probation, with 24 hours of community service and $1,000 in fees and court costs in addition to the two game suspension the Nuggets imposed on him. Melo had been arrested on April 14th after the popo noticed him weaving on Interstate 25. Watch out Carmelo, because the popo are on your tail!

Arfat Fadel was arrested in connection with the robbery and beating of Oakland Raiders receiver Javon Walker. Walker had been robbed of about $3,000 in cash and $100,000 in jewelry and then beaten and left on a Las Vegas street. A second man is wanted for the crime. Watch out Arfat, because the popo are on your tail!

Alabama linebacker Jimmy Johns will not be able to enjoy his senior year after being arrested and charged with five counts of distributing occaine and possession of Ecstasy pills. The popo has sucessfully purchased drugs from Johns five times over the span of a week and a half before receiving a warrent to search his off campus apartment. Johns was later dismissed from the football team and became the 10th Alabama player to be arrested in the last year. Watch out Jimmy, because the popo are on your tail!

Not to be out done, Clemson safety DeAndre McDaniel has some explaining to do after he allegedly covered his girlfriend's head with a comforter and began choking her. She also claimed he punched her in the head, face and chest before pushing her down a flight of stairs. The woman, a sophmore at the school, was treated at a local hospital for a cerviacal sprain and contusions. Goodness, a gun works quicker, not that I condone that, but who does this sort of crap? Allegedly DeAndre! So watch out Mr. McDaniels, because the popo are on your tail!

After viewing Shaq's attempt at rapping, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said he would like Mr. O'Neal's badge back because of his use of "racially derogatory word and other foul language." Well, I hope it was worth it, because Shaq, the popo are on your tail!

The Short and Sweet Version

Baseball Update:
According to Bob Klapish the Mets are getting along a lot better in the clubhouse since Willie Randolph's departure, but that lighter mood hasn't exactly turned into a massive winning streak as they lost to the Mariners, 5-2. Johan Santana gave up a grand slam to pitcher Felix Hernandez in the second inning. Hernandez left the game three innings later after accidentally being spiked by Carlos Beltran at home plate.

Former Met Brian Bannister led a hot Royals team passed the Rockies, 8-4. The win is the eighth for Kansas City in the last nine games.

Dan Haren tossed seven shout out innings during the Diamondbacks/Red Sox pitchers duel. Arizona's two in the seventh was all they needed as they came out on top 2-1. Kevin Youkilis had to leave the game early after getting hit in the eye during warm-ups.

Curt Schillings career may not be over after under going successful shoulder surgery. He could even be throwing off the mound by January. The only question is, who wants an aging pitcher who can't be ready until mid season 2009?

The Diamondbacks activated outfielder Eric Byrnes from the 15 day DL while optioniong Alex Romero back to Triple-A Tucson.

Ben Sheets had a gem of his own tossing a complete game shut-out in the Brewers 4-1 victory over the Braves. Jo-Jo Reyes went only 2 and a third innings, but Atlanta's bullpen held the Brewers scoreless for the remaining 6 and two thirds innings.

Braves right fielder Jeff Francoeur is hoping a corrective contact lense in his right eye will cure his so-far disappointing season.

The Angels rallied in the eighth when Garret Anderson knocked in the go-ahead run, in LA's 3-2 victory over the Nationals. The Nats could be without first baseman Nick Johnson for the remainder of the season after undergoing wrist surgery.

Mark Mulder was scratched from his scheduled rehab start on Monday due to back stiffness, luckily it wasn't an issue with his shoulder, which has undergone two surgeries. The Cardinals have him listed as day-to-day.

All 30 Major League teams will wear special stars and stripes caps during July 4th weekend and on September 11th as a part of the "Welcome Back Veterans" program started by Mets owner Fred Wilpon. Wilpon is hoping to raise $100 million from sales of the caps.

Nascar Update:
Congratulations to this weekend's winner's Kyle Busch (Cup), Carl Edwards (Nationwide) and Johnny Benson (Trucks).

45 teams are entered for this weekend's race at New Hampshire. Click here to see who makes the list.

Greg Biffle signed a three year deal with Roush Fenway.

Looks like Mark Martin is jumping ship at DEI and heading over to Hendrick Motorsports to take over the #5 ride from Casey Mears in 2009. Aric Amirola will drive the #8 full time in 2009, which is currently sharing with Martin.

News&Notes: A momemt of silence people, the Giants have cut back-up QB Jared Lorenzen. Now who's going to make the pink jell-o surprise?...Former Giant Michael Strahan will join Fox in the studio...Kobe Bryant and Dwayne Wade were among the 12 players chosen to represent the US at the Olympics...Meanwhile, Shaq has taken to the clubs to diss Kobe...And Carmelo Anthony will miss the first two games of next season after the Nuggets suspended him for his DUI arrest...The Tampa Bay Lightning are expected to announce Barry Melrose as their new coach...The Pens may want to hold onto Evgeni Malkin a little while longer after Marian Hossa told the team he is expecting to test the free-agent market...Congrats to Dan Wheldon on winning the Iowa 250 on his 30th Birthday...Our thoughts and prayers go out to family and friends of Scott Kalitta who died on Saturday form injuries sustanded when his Funny Car burst into flames at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park. He was 46.

Friday Funnies

Normally I save my hair comments for Wednesday, but then Kevin Millar went out and dyed his hair, debuting it Wednesday night, well after I'd alreday posted by Hump Day Hair for the week. But I couldn't let this little dye job go an entire week without mentioning it so here's Kevin's before and afters:

And before you go laughing at the crazy shade of blonde Millar's rocking, let it be known, he drove in the winning run for the Orioles on Wednesday night. This trend could be hotter than Jason Giambi's mustache.
(Photos: Getty Images)

And just a reminder, I'll be out celebrating the union between Howard and Karen this weekend and will be unable to post until Tuesday. So go out and have a great weekend and we'll see you back here next week! Congrats to the happy couple.

Blue Light Special, Aisle 13: Brooms

Baseball Update:
The Royals, Yankees, White Sox and Orioles all completed sweeps on Thursday with the Royals taking down the Cardinals, 4-1; The Yankees edging the Padres, 2-1; The White Sox blasting passed the Pirates, 13-8; And the Orioles schooled the Astros, 7-5.

The Rays completed a sweep of their own with their 8-3 pounding of the Cubs. Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano will miss at least his next scheduled start and is planning on getting an MRI done on his shoulder on Friday. The Rays also reached an agreement with their #1 pick Tim Beckham.

Eric Stults pitched into the seventh inning in his season debut for the Dodgers, as LA went onto beat the Reds, 7-4 and take the series sweep.

Michael Cuddyer had a whale of day which included a two run triple in the Twins 9-3 victory over the Nationals. The win completed a three game sweep of D.C.

The final series sweep of the day came from the Rockies who handled the Indians, 6-3. The win got Colorado out of the NL West basement which is now occupied by the Giants and Padres.

Sal's pals get excited...the Indians have acquired Sal Fasano from the Braves for a player to be named later. The Tribe is desperate for a catcher with Victor Martinez down.

Days after firing their GM, the Mariners cut manager John McLaren. Bench coach Jim Riggleman will take over managing duties for the rest of the season.

The Rangers rallied passed the Braves thanks to a game winning Chris Shelton single in the ninth to break a 4-4 tie and give Texas the 5-4 win. Chipper Jones went 0-for-4 dropping his batting average below .400.

The Blue Jays put on quite a rally of their own after Brewers pitcher Dave Bush flirted with a no-hitter into the eighth inning, but Toronto fought back in a major way scoring a combined seven runs in the final two innings, coming up just a run short of tying the game at 8 a piece. But Milwaukee held onto a 8-7 victory. Salomon Torres picked up the save. Torres will remain the closer even when Eric Gagne comes off the disabled list.

Blue Jays GM J.P. Riccardi said he was sorry for his remarks criticizing Reds outfielder Adam Dunn. Of course Dunn didn't actually know Riccardi, who he referred to as a clown, so I guess we're almost even.

Curt Schilling's attempt to salvage part of the season is over. The Red Sox ace says he will undergo surgery to fix his shoulder, thus ending any chances of coming back this season.

Davey Johnson and Tino Martinez will manage in the Futures game in July. The game is a part of the All-Star game festivities at Yankee Stadium.

ESPN wants everyone to jump on the Cubs bandwagon and are giving Cubs facts, the different types of bandwagon fans and the biggest bandwagons ever. And somehow I can't bring myself to root for the Cubs. I mean if they win, then I'm pretty sure the world will implode.

NASCAR Update:
The Cup guys head over to California wine country for their first road course of the season, Infineon Speedway. Due to the length of the track (1.99 miles) and time it takes to get around, Infineon produces a different type of ingstrategy. One that doesn't always produce a long line of cars on pit lane when the caution comes out because crew chiefs usually work the race backwards, planning pit stops by the known instead of the unknown. A road course ringer has never won this event, but with Scott Pruett, Max Papis and others scheduled to qualify, could a ringer finally break through or will a regular like Juan Pablo Montoya, Tony Stewart or Jeff Gordon land in victory lane? You'll have to tune into TNT at 3:30 PM/est to catch the Toyota/Save Mart 350 to find out.

Boris Said is hoping to turn things around this weekend. And what better place for him to do it than at a road course?

Popo in my crib News:
Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw is serving a 30-day jail sentence for a probation violation at the Abingdon Regional Jail in southwest Virginia. Bradshaw's lawyer says the stay in jail is due to a incident that happened before Bradshaw was drafted by the Giants. Watch out Ahmad, because the popo are on your tail!

News&Notes: The NHL has put its foot down and it wants the New York Rangers' ownership MSG out of the League. Now if only the NBA could follow suit...According to a report, Dwayne Wade will be a member of the U.S. Basketball team. A full roster announcement is scheduled for Monday...Well that was fast, after vowing not to gamble, Charles Barkley has accepted an invitation to play in a charity poker tournament. Well, if it's for charity...The Bears and DT Tommie Harris have agreed to a four year, $40 million extension...The Lightning are expected to take Steven Stamkos with their #1 pick in this year's NHL draft.

Yankees Partner with Hard Rock Cafe

Last week, the Yankees were asking the tax payers of New York to fork over $400 million and today, I think I know why. No it’s not because digging up cement for a planted David Ortiz jersey is more expensive than you think, it’s because the Yankees new digs will have a Hard Rock Café. Yeah, because when I go to a baseball stadium I always think, you know what this place needs, an over priced restaurant with memorabilia from overrated musicians.

Alex Rodriguez helped announce the new attraction on Wednesday, signing a large guitar and posing for pictures. Because come on, who would be a better spokesperson for a chain restaurant like the Hard Rock? The Café and a new venture between the Yankees and Seminole Hard Rock Entertainment, NYY Stake will both be open to the public year round and available to those patrons who don’t have tickets for the day’s game. Of course, those fans should take note; you will not be able to see the field from either restaurant. So let me get this straight, you’ll be paying through the nose to eat at Yankee Stadium, but you’ll have to watch the game on a TV like the people at the ESPN Zone in Times Square? Just when you think the Yankees can’t come up with any other ideas to fleece their fans, they bring you this!

The popo are on a lot of people's tails!

Baseball Update:
Carlos Zambrano left the game early with shoulder problems, but not before surrendering four runs in the third, in the Cubs 5-4 loss to the Rays. Zambrano will undergo an MRI on his shoulder.

Speaking of shoulder troubles, the Indians Travis Hafner flew down to Birmingham, AL to visit Dr. James Andrews about his nagging shoulder. While the team has not released any information, it's never a good sign when you have to get check out by Andrews. In other bad news for the Tribe, they fell to the Rockies, 4-2. Oh, and Fausto Carmona will not be able to make his first minor league appearance on Friday because of hip inflammation. Carmona will rest for three days before he starts pitching again.

Jerry Manuel's first win as the Mets manager was a barn burner thanks to a David Wright game tying RBI single and Damion Easley's game winning homer in the 10th. It was just Easley's second long ball of the season, as the Mets defeated the Angels, 5-4.

With their rotation one man short until September, it should come as no surprise that the Yankees snatched up recently umeployed Sidney Ponson. The former Ranger was signed to a Minor League deal. The Bombers can also take heart in their young starter Darrell Rasner who out dueled reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy in New York's 8-5 victory over the Padres.

The Astros' struggles continue as they dropped their seventh straight game, 2-1 to the Orioles. Kevin Millar and his new blonde do provided the game winning single in the 10th.

Dan Haren took care of his former team, the Oakland A's, pretty easily on Wednesday day, tossing seven innings of one run ball, while his teammates busted out their bats in the D-backs 11-1 win.

After a tough loss on Tuesday, the Braves bounced back with a 5-2 win over the Rangers. The even better news for the Bravos was the guy who picked up the save, Mike Gonzalez, who has been out since May of 2007.

Justin Masterson won the battle of the young pitchers with the help of a four RBI outting by J.D. Drew in the Red Sox 7-4 defeat of the Phillies.

How bad is it in Seattle, not only have they just fired their GM, but they're willing to eat up the rest of Richie Sexson's contract and just release the under achieving first baseman. Plus they lost to the Marlins, 8-3.

Speaking of overpaid players, Barry Zito lasted just two innings in the Giants 7-2 loss to the Tigers. Zito has won just two games this season.

Derek Lowe picked up his first road win of the season in the Dodger 6-1 smashing of the Reds. The Reds send down pitcher Homer Bailey who was 0-3 with a 8.76 ERA in his last three starts.

Yahoo! Sports is looking at the most overpaid and underpaid players in baseball. Click here to see who makes the list.

Nascar Update:
Like in Pocono, drivers at Michigan were complaining about the heat in their cars. Well, some drivers, other drivers like Kasey Kahne said they felt fine. Why, you might ask, because some teams perfer to take care of their drivers and other teams rather take care of the car. At least that's what I picked up from this article.

Popo in my crib News:
Prince Fielder's reaction to his $670,000 contract renewal in spring training makes all the more sense now, after a published report said the first baseman owed more than $400,000 in back taxes. Fielder has failed to comment on the story, but as I always say, you don't screw around with the government, they'll throw you right in jail! But first, watch out Prince, because the popo are on your tail!

Cardinals running back J.J. Arrington was one of five people arrested after a fight broke out at a North Carolina nightclub. Arrington was charged with disorderly conduct while his other buddies were charged with simple assault. One moron was also charged with assault on government official. Yeah, Roger Goodell is not going to be happy about this. Watch out J.J., because the popo are on your tail!

Former International Speedway Corp employee William Kilgannon has plead guilty to one count of extortion conspiracy in connection with ISC's failed attempt to put a track in Staten Island. Kilgannon is scheduled to be sentenced in October. Watch out Willie, because the popo are on your tail!

News&Notes: Tiger Wood's U.S. Open win on Monday became even more impressive when it was announced he will miss the remainder of the season to undergo another surgery to fix his torn ACL. Plus he was also playing on a fractured leg. Sure make everyone feel even more inferior, Tiger...The Celtics will celebrate their 2008 NBA title with a parade in Boston on Thursday. (Click here for photos from the parade)...Plaxico Burress expects to be ready for training camp, equipped with a new contract...The Raiders expect Javon Walker to be ready for training camp despite being robbed and basically left for dead in Las Vegas...The NHL has approved the sales of the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Edmonton Oilers...And finally ESPN.com writer and on air personality Jemele Hill has been relieved of her duties for the time being after writing a piece that compared being a Celtics fan to Adolf Hitler. Hitler no, those teen girls screaming for the Jonas Brothers, yeah, somewhere around there.

Check this out: People has named Mario Lopez as the hottest bachelor of 2008. If he's the hottest bachelor than single women everywhere are totally screwed. Click here to see a preview of the list which includes tennis hottie James Blake. (Who, may I add, would have been a much better choice!)

Avery wraps up his Internship

Since we made such a big deal about Mr. Avery’s summer internship at Vogue in May, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention that Sean has completed his time at the Women’s mag and plans to spend the rest of the summer at the beach…in a Speedo…because he’s “trying to [bring] the European flavor to America.” Kid, I think David Beckham tried that last year and people still are not buying it.

Come July 1st Avery could be a hot property, but the left winger has said that he’d like to stay in New York, however he'd likely only do that for more than the $2.75 million the Rangers offered him last winter. We’ll have to see if his salary demands fit into the Blue Shirts plans, but until then, I’ll try to block the mental image of Sean in a Speedo.

Hump Day Hair

Often the most over looked at Hendrick Motorsports, Casey Mears deserves a little bit of a spot light. Ok, well his hair does. At the beginning of the season Mears was sporting his almost trademark closely shaved cut:

(Casey at Daytona - From caseymears.com)

But as the season has progressed, Mears decided to grow out his locks:

Which I was totally all for, until he stepped out at Michigan looking like he may need a bit of trim.

(Mears at Michigan - Chris Troman/Getty Images for Nascar)

Just a bit off the top Casey, no need to go down the Jimmie Johnson road of haircare.

Separated at Birth

I've become slightly obsessed with hulu.com and have found myself watching tons of shows Fox canceled too soon like "Arrested Development." While watching "Kitchen Confidential" I started to think that John Francis Daley who plays Jim looked an awful lot like 18 year old Nationwide Series winner Joey Logano. You be the judge:

Stop texting me Pete

Baseball Update:
It was a good night for the city of Boston as one team collected a championship (more on that in the News&Notes section) and other team rolled on by the Phillies thanks to seven scoreless innings by Red Sox youngster Jon Lester and a two run bomb by Coco Crisp as the Sox blanked the Phils, 3-0. Lester improved to 3-0 with a 1.33 ERA in his last three starts.

Boston also got some news on three of their pitchers, placing Bartolo Colon on the DL with a stiff back but he'll be replaced by Dice-K Matsuzaka who will return to the rotation on Saturday. Curt Schilling will be heading back to Boston to be evaluated by team doctors.

Meanwhile, the rival New York Yankees got a blow-out of their own, shutting down the Padres 8-0. Jason Giambi had two homeruns in the win, while Pete Rose's text message buddy Alex Rodriguez added a solo shot of his own. I just happened to be at the game last night. You can click here for some of my pictures from the game.

The Yanks placed ace Chein-Ming Wang on the 15 day DL with his ankle injury although he'll be out for well longer than that.

The Dodgers are hoping that a stint on the DL will help out the struggling Brad Penny. He has been dealing with a sore shoulder for much of the season, possibly causing him to stumble so mightily. But with bad news, came some good news for LA, who beat the Reds, 3-1.

Milton Bradley was injured in the Rangers 7-5 victory over the Braves. Bradley injured his quad while running out a two-run single in the Rangers big four run third inning.

Jerry Manuel set a very different tone for the hot mess Mets, act like professionals. Too bad it didn't lead to a win after the Mets fell to the Angels, 6-1. Manuel reportedly talked to Jose Reyes in the clubhouse after the shortstop threw his helmet down in disgust over being taken out the game with what appeared to be a tight hamstring in the first inning, forcing Reyes to apologize to his teammates.

Meanwhile, former Manager Willie Randolph said he was stunned by his firing. Are you stunned in the cold and heartless way that it was done or that you were fired? Because anybody not living under a rock knew your days in Gotham were numbered.

There was no lack of offense for the White Sox who creamed the Pirates, 16-5. The ChiSox placed Paul Konerko on the 15 day DL. This marks his first time to the DL. Who knew 2008 would be the year of first trips to the disabled list?

Speaking of poudings, the Diamondbacks got one of their own falling to the A's, 15-1. Bradon Webb lasted just three and a third innings giving up seven earned in only his third loss of the season.

The Rockies had 17 hits in their 10-2 mashing of the Indians. Starter Greg Reynolds evenged his poor start against San Francisco with a solid six inning performance while Greg Baker added an inside the park homerun and Brad Hawpe got his homer the old fashioned way, hitting over the fence in the Rockies win.

The Tigers won their fifth straight with a 5-1 victory over the Giants. Marcus Thames has had a homerun in each of those five wins.

Evan Longoria added a homerun and game saving defensive move to his resume in the Rays 3-2 win over the Cubs.

Apparently Major Leauge Baseball was not kidding when it said it wanted to speed up the games. Astros manager Cecil Cooper and Twins manager Ron Gardenhire were both fined an undisclosed amount by the League for failing to comply with "pace of game regulations."

Nascar Update:
Nascar has admitted in improperly scored Mark Martin in front of Brian Vickers prior to a restart in the Lifelock 400 on Sunday. Vickers had openly chastised Nascar for moving Martin in front of him, claiming he had passed him two laps prior to the caution. Nascar admitting a mistake? Mark this date on your calendars as the day Nascar came down from its high horse only to jump right back on it two minutes later.

Scott Pruett will replace Reed Sorenson in the No. 41 Dodge and Max Papis will replace Scott Riggs in the #66 car for Haas CNC Racing at Infineon Raceway this weekend. Riggs will move into the #70 car.

Hendrick Motosports is the most valuable team in Nascar according to Forbes' annual rankings. Click here for the full list.

Caterpillar will be taking over sponsorship duties on the number #31 Chevy driven by Jeff Burton. Currenlty AT&T can be seen on Burton's hood.

U.S. Army could be leaving DEI at the end of this season. Currently seen on the #01 Chevy driven by both Mark Marin and Aric Almirola, the U.S. Army is looking into its options for 2009 and beyond.

News&Notes: Congratulations to the Boston Celtics on winning the NBA title on Tuesday. The Celtics did it in convincing fashion destroying the Lakers, 131-92...Paul Pierce was named the MVP of the finals...The "Seattle" SuperSonics future remains in the balance as a trial continues in Seattle. Current owner Clay Bennett claimed he had hoped that a new arena could keep the Sonics in Seattle. Now Clay, remember what I always say don't screw with the government. You don't seem like the type that would do well in jail...The Bulls worked out Michael Beasley and have plans to work out Derrick Rose as the draft approaches...Terrell Owens has been excused from the Cowboys' mandatory mincamp...Ocho Cinco will be unaviableable for a bit if rumors of a possible ankle surgery are true...Congrats to Igor Larionov, Glenn Anderson, Ray Scapinello and Ed Chynoweth on being named to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Bye, Bye Willie

Baseball Update:
As to not ruin Father's Day, the Mets decided to fly Willie Randolph across the country, have him coach a game, in which the Mets actually won, 9-6 and then fire him. What makes this whole thing even more henious is that this was their plan all along. Good job Omar, make your team expensive and elderly and then alienate your fans base. Bench Coach Jerry Manuel will be promoted to interim manager.

Ah, but Willie wasn't the only one getting the ax, prior to another disappointing loss (6-1 to the Marlins) the Mariners have fired GM Bill Bavasi. They also moved Ichiro to right field.

The Rangers have released pitcher Sidney Ponson. They also activated minor leaguer Thomas Diamond from the 60 day DL. Only a few days prior, manager Ron Washington had considered Ponson a "disruptive presense."

Meanwhile former Oriole Jay Gibbons has signed with the Long Island Ducks. Gibbons had been cut before opening day and is still owed $11.9 million by Baltimore.

While the Braves were able to smash the Rockies, 7-1, Colorado did get some good news. Short stop Troy Tulowitzki could be back with the team by the end of the week. Tulowitzki has been out since late April when he tore his quad.

Ryan Howard knocked two out of the park while Cole Hamels 2 earned runs came from back to back blasts by Dustin Pedroia and J.D. Drew in the Phillies 8-2 rout of the Red Sox. The Sox, who currenlty have five players leading their respective positions in all-star balloting, were without first baseman Kevin Youkilis who was a late stratch due to muscle spasms.

Sox pitcher Dice-K threw five innings for AAA Pawtucket, striking out five and throwing 47 of 65 pitches for strikes.

John Bowker hit a go ahead three run homer in the Giants 8-6 win over the Tigers. This marks the first interleague game win for San Francisco in seven tries this season. Bowker's long ball spoiled Fernando Rodney's season debut.

The Yankees got some bad news, their star pitcher Chien-Ming Wang will be out until September after injuring his ankle running the bases in Houston. Yankees co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner was not happy with the news and has challenged the Nation League to enter the 21st century by adopting the DH, saying the National League style of play has been around since the 1800s. Instead of blaming the National League for preserving baseball, how about blaming your coaches for not teaching your pitchers how to run. I see lots of little kids run the bases at Major League Stadiums and not get injured, so why can't a 20 something professional athlete do the same?

The final Hall of Fame game between the Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres was canceled by rain.

Nascar Update:
Click here to see who is on the entry list for this week's race at Infineon Raceway.

Kyle Busch has decided not to run for both the Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series championships. While his name is on the Nationwide Series entry list for the Milwaukee 250 at The Milwaukee Mile, a Braun spokesman said Busch will not be traveling from Sonoma, CA (where the Cup race is being held) to Milwaukee to compete in the Nationwide Series race. Good call there Kyle. It's fine to race in both when their held at the same track, but traveling back and forth has started to take a toll on the 23 year old.

Tony Stewart maybe known as well for his aggressive driving on the track as he is for his kindness outside of racing after recently raising $1 million at his Prelude to the Dream race at his Eldora Speedway but his philanthropy has not stopped there. After catastrophic flooding destroyed homes and farms around his hometown of Columbus, Indiana, Stewart decided to donate most of his $137,000 winnings from Sunday's race at Michigan. Click here for the full story.

Popo in my crib News:
It's sad when you read a title that you expect the worse, so when I read that the Radiers' Javon Walker was found unconscious on in Las Vegas, I figured it was because of too much partying but instead, it seems he was the victim of a robbery in which he incurred "significant injuries." At this point a suspect's name has not been released but watch out attacker, because the popo are on your tail!

News&Notes: It took 18 holes and a sudden death for Tiger Woods to walk away with the U.S. Open...It may have taken the rest of the Celtics 12 extra hours to get home, but not Ray Allen who rushed home after his son fell ill. Allen is, however, expected to play in game six aganist the Lakers Tuesday in Boston...North Carolina's Ty Lawson, Wayne Ellington and Danny Green have all withdrawn their names from the NBA draft...Former Patriots linebacker Rosevelt Colvin has signed with the Houston Texans.

Lifelock 400

Winner: Dale Earnhardt, Jr.

Recap: Dale Earnhardt, Jr. needed a little bit of strategy and whole lot of luck to capture his first win in over 2 years, but the gamble paid off giving Junior his first win since moving over to Hendrick Motorsports and Hendrick just his second win of the season. The #88 team was able to stretch their fuel 55 laps even after Sam Hornish, Jr. spun forcing the race into Nascar’s version of overtime. Patrick Carpentier spun in the bonus laps handing Junior the win. Kasey Kahne finished second, continuing his hot streak since his win at the All-Star Challenge.

Race Results Points Standings Photos

Shout outs: It’s hard not to herald a team and a driver that had not won in 76 races, but my shout out has to go to Roush Fenway Racing which saw four of its five cars finish in the top 10. Greg Biffle, the outcast of the race, finished 20th.

Disappointments: It’s hard to say a 13th place finish is a disappointment, especially while he currently maintains the points lead, but Kyle Busch’s jaunts around the country are certainly hurting his finishes on Sundays. Last week it was a 43rd, this week a 13th. I understand that you can’t win every race, but maybe he should think about cutting back on his extra circulars, just a little bit.
