Statues of Liberty to pop up in New York

The Statue of Liberty is so synonymous with New York that it is featured on the state’s license plates so it should come as no surprise that the figure that represents freedom and America be chosen to herald the 2008 All-Star game to the Big Apple. 42 8 ½ foot replica statues will be placed around the city as part of a five borough celebration staged to help close out the house that Ruth built. 30 of them will represent a current Major League team, one will represent the Brooklyn Dodgers and one will represent the New York Giants, one for the American League and one for the National League and four for the all-star game. And you guessed it; you can buy them on mlb.com.

Lady Liberty is just the tip of the iceberg, as the city plans to hold a parade for the players named to each all-star team that will also include 40 members of the baseball Hall of Fame marching up the Avenue of Americas from Bryant Park to 58th street. All the details were announced during a Wednesday press conference.

If you’re going to be around the NYC metro area on July 15th, you can register for a chance to purchase all-star tickets. Click here for more details.
