um..it's june...when did that happen?

Baseball Update:
Is this just blind faith or could the Cubs really be on their way to breaking a 100 year old curse? With their 5-3 win over the Rockies, the Cubs have the best record in baseball. The last time they were leading the majors on June 1st? 1908, the last time they won the World Series. Now if only they could bring back Fred Merkle and get him to play for the Dodgers...

After a scary moment in the fourth inning when Bobby Abreu lined a ball off Twins' pitcher Nick Blackburn's face, the Twins were able to hold off the Yankees, 5-1. Blackburn's nose was spewing blood, but x-rays showed the nose was not broken and he is listed as day-to-day. I have to say, when I was watching it yesterday afternoon, I thought Blackburn's nose was broken for sure.

The Padres didn't get as good news as the Twins, as their pitcher Mark Prior will have to undergo season ending surgery on his shoulder. And then they lost to the Giants, 4-3 in 10.

The Rangers will also be without their ace Vincente Padilla after he left the team to attend to family matters in Nicaragua. Padilla will miss his next scheduled start on Monday forcing the Rangers to move up Doug Mathis to replace him. They also lost to the A's, 13-8.

The Mets on the other hand are getting their pitcher back, Pedro Martinez on Tuesday. But over the last week, the team that could do no right, has started to turn things around, taking out the Dodgers, 6-1 and handing Johan Santana his 100th career win.

Braden Looper is getting it down at the plate and on the mound scoring two runs while allowing just 3 by the Pirates in the Cardinals 7-4 victory over the Bucs.

With Sunday's 7-5 win over the Marlins, the Phillies have won five of their last six games and scored 55 runs in that stretch to move themselves into first place in the NL East. Prior to the start of Sunday's game, the Phillies' officially retired Mike Lieberthal who had signed a one day minor league contract so he could go out with his former team.

The Brewers had a very nice homestand of their own, finishing off the Astros 10-1 to sweep the series. Ryan Braun and Russell Branyan both hit two run blasts while Gabe Kapler and Craig Counsell both went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Speaking of sweeps, the Reds completed one of their own with their 6-2 victory over the Braves. The Braves are now just 7-21 0n the road as they await the return of John Smoltz who is expected to return to the team as a reliever on Monday.

After losing 13 straight, the Royals are starting a very modest winning streak, beating the Indians 6-1.

Arizona blanked the Nationals 5-0, as the Nats continue to be without their face Ryan Zimmerman who injured his shoulder sliding head first into second base against the Orioles. Zimmerman will undergo a MRI to see the extent of his injury. And this my friends is why you don't slide head first into a base.

Gabe Gross knocked in the winning run in the 10th with his solo homer in the Rays 4-3 defeat of the White Sox. The White Sox lack-luster performance in Tampa has lead Ozzie Gullien to go on one of those rants.

Detroit scored four in the ninth to rally passed the Mariners 7-5.

Nascar Update:
It was a great weekend for Joe Gibbs Racing this weekend with Kyle Busch taking the Checkers at the Best Buy 400 while Denny Hamlin paced the Nationwide Series race and development driver Joey Lagano picked up sixth place in his Nationwide debut on Saturday.

Scott Speed broke up the JGR sweep celebrating his first ever Truck Series win in just his sixth career start. He's obvisiously talented but I cannot condone the horrible sunglasses.

Popo in my crib News:
The popo are investigating a hit and run accident that occured in Buffalo on Sunday which injured a female pedstrian. The SUV involved is registered to the Bills' Marshawn Lynch but so far the popo are not sure if he was driving the vehicle when the incident happened. Watch out Marshawn, because the popo are on your tail!

News&Notes: It's official, the Americans suck on clay after Robby Gineperi fell to Fernando Gonzalez 7-6 (4), 6-3, 6-1. He was the final American player in the French Open...Apparently Jason Taylor isn't ready to give up football just yet. The "Dancing with the Stars" finalist wants to stay in Miami for one more year. Then he's high-tailing it hollywood...Mike Vanderjagt's heading back to the CFL...Congrats to Danica Patrick's new best friend Ryan Briscoe who won his first IndyCar Series race in the ABC Supply A.J. Foyt 225...The excitment of Hillary Will's Top Fuel win at the Heartland Park Topeka was quickly erased with news that a 55 year old woman was killed and a 52 year old man injured when a pick-up truck drove onto the gravel portion of a road where four people were walking outside the event.

Check this out: Last night MTV held their first live Movie Awards. I have to say, it wasn't overly exciting, although I did love the Wayne's World shout out. But I think the big thing for me was that people were winning awards for movies I had never heard of. If you missed a second, don't worry, I'm sure MTV will re-air this thing a million times, otherwise click here to watch the show online and here to see some pictures from the red carpet.

It's been fun blogging with you,
Kate
