debuts and comebacks

Baseball Update:
New York had two big games on Tuesday with the Yankees "future" Joba Chamberlain taking the mound and the Mets vet Pedro Martinez making his first start since April Fools Day. Decidedly the Mets got the better performance of the two with Martinez giving up just three earned runs in six innings in their 9-6 win over the Giants, while Chamberlain lasted just 2 and a third innings (thanks to management's tight reigns) in the Yanks 9-3 loss to the Blue Jays.

Jorge Posada could be back behind the plate by Thursday giving the Yankees a much needed lift that Joba apparently could not. Although, if he was allowed to actually throw four innings or keep him the pen where he belongs things could have been different.

If the Red Sox pitching staff is any indication, maybe they'll be able to weather the David Ortiz storm by finding another young gun to step up. Early in spring training, people were wondering how their pitching staff would fair without Curt Schilling? Well, let's see, some 23 year old throws a no-hitter and then when Clay Buchholz goes down, they have another 23 year old filling that hole with a couple of wins including Tuesday nights 7-4 victory over the Rays. Time will tell, but they did go the month of April without his bat so I'm sure they'll be just fine.

The Angels Joe Saunders became the first pitcher in the AL to hit 9 wins thanks to Los Angeles of Anaheim's 5-4 edging of the Mariners.

Randy Johnson took hold of second on the all time strike out list, but that was about the only highlight as the Diamondbacks got blasted by the Brewers, 7-1. The Brewers Ryan Braun, Prince Fielder and J.J. Hardy all hit homeruns in the win.

It's not all hunky-dory in Milwaukee as Bill Hall's agent says he wants out of Brewtown. Hall apparently isn't too thrilled to be platooning with Russell Branyan, but his .162 average against righties probably doens't have any club jumping up and down to get him.

The Cubs launched three long balls of their own in their 9-6 defeat of the Padres. It's like two opposites going against each other with the surging Cubbies playing against the floundering Padres. It's almost not fair.

But their cross town rivals, the White Sox totally one upped them with four dingers in their 9-5 victory over the Royals. The Royals might just be the best perscription to any teams ills.

While Ken Griffey, Jr. attempts to chase 600 homeruns, the Braves Chipper Jones inched himself closer to knocking out his 400th with his 399th career homer in Atlanta's 5-4 win. Dan Uggla scorched two homers for the Marlins but it wasn't enough to pass the Bravos. But it wasn't all good news, as John Smoltz reported he was feeling sore one day after throwing an inning in relief. Goodness, Smoltzie, hold on for a couple of more months and then you can totally go chase those golf dreams.

The Rockies fought hard for their 3-0 blanking of the Dodgers especially with that whole bench clearing brawl. The win snapped their 9 game win streak. That's what I like to see, some fiestiness.

Jack Cust's infield single was all the A's needed to squeak pass the Tigers 5-4 (11). But the Tigers got some good news as rehabing flame thrower Joel Zumaya topped the triple digit mark in a minor league appearance for Single-A Lakeland on Tuesday.

NL All-Star Ballot update: Chase Utley is surging with an NL-leading 847,628 votes. While Hanley Ramirez is just a little under 8,000 votes ahead of Miguel Tejada in shortstop voting. Click here to see where your favorite NL players rank.

Nascar Update:
Word on the street is that after much debate Haas CNC Racing has decided to appeal their massive 150 point, $100,000 fine penalties levied against the team following the Coca-Cola 600. Might as well, it ain't gonna happen, but you might as well.

Guess what tonight is...Prelude to a Dream! The exciting race brings out the best in Nascar and some of Tony Stewart's other friends to compete on Stewart's track Eldora with the money going to the Victory Junction Gang Camp and the Tony Stewart Foundation. While I'm sure tickets are sold out, I'm guessing this will be making it's way to a TV near you in the near future.

So Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson all made the Fortunate 50, but they aren't the only drivers making some serious bank thanks to skyrocketing salaries in Nascar.

News&Notes: The Pistons are in the market for a new head coach after firing Flip Saunders. Apparently his three straight Conference Finals appearances is just not acceptable...A few months ago we mentioned former NBA All-star Kevin Johnson was running for mayor of Sacramento. Well, looks like this race is heading to a run-off...In what have you done for me lately news, the Lightning axed coach John Tortorella just four years after leading his team to a Stanley Cup Title...Ron Wilson could be heading to the Maple Leafs after being fired by the San Jose Sharks in May...Red Wings coach Mike Babcock was none-to-thrilled with the officiating during game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals. A game in which the Wings fell to the Penguins 4-3 in triple overtime, forcing a game 6...Which takes place TONIGHT at 8 PM/est on NBC...Chad Johnson must have attended the Moises Alou school of thinking after saying he's going back to the Bengals. It seems like a just a few months ago he was demanding to be traded and claiming he would never play for Cincinnati, oh well, I guess he realized if he didn't play he was so not getting paid...Here's something I just learned, making a game saving crazy catch to help your team win the Super Bowl does not guarantee you a roster spot. Thanks David Tyree, I had no idea...Arizona State wacked Texas A&M 11-0 to take home the NCAA Softball Title. Congrats to the Sun Devils!
