Stayin' Alive...Stayin' Alive

Baseball Update:
It wasn't exactly a win-win-win for the Braves as they got back John Smoltz and beat the Marlins, 7-5 (10) but Smoltz's return was a bit rocky as he gave up two runs and blew a save for the Braves. Yunel Escobar hit a walk-off two run shot to give the Braves their first win since Thursday's pounding of the Brewers. It's good to be home, huh?

Speaking of returning pitchers, the Mets will get Pedro Martinez back on the mound on Tuesday and it couldn't come soon enough as Oliver Perez gave up six runs in a third of an inning as the Giants mashed the Mets, 10-2. Brian Horwitz got his first career homerun in the win.

Current Mets outfielder Moises Alou has too much time on his hands with days spent doing nothing but apparently think while he makes his second trip to the DL. The former Cubs outfielder is throwing Steve Bartman back under the bus saying he could have caught that ball. It seems like only a few weeks ago he was singing a different tune. This guy really needs to find a hobby because retirement is looming a lot closer than he thinks.

Twins pitcher Nick Blackburn considered himself very lucky after being drilled by a Bobby Abreu liner in the Twins win on Sunday. Blackburn sustained only a swollen lip and nose but no break and is considered day-to-day. Meanwhile his Twins teammates were able to rally passed the Yankees for a 6-5 win. Delmon Young had three doubles while Joe Mauer hit a long homerun, his first of the season in the victory.

A double whammy for the Indians as their star catcher Victor Martinez has been struggling with a hamstring injury for much of the season. Plus they sent Jake Westbrook to the DL again with elbow inflammation.

An MRI on Nats third baseman Ryan Zimmerman revealed a small tear in his left, no-throwing shoulder placing him on the DL. Zimmerman hurt his shoulder sliding head first into second base and has missed the seven straight games with the injury.

The Red Sox are facing some tough times as well after they placed David Ortiz on the DL with a partially torn tendon in his left wrist. Big Papi will be out for at least a month. Adding insult to injury, they fell to the Orioles, 6-3.

The Rockies continue to free fall, this time dropping a game to the Dodgers 8-2. This was Derek Lowe's first win in five weeks and the Rockies eighth straight loss. I know it's early, but Rocktober doesn't seem in the cards this year.

Meanwhile, the Cubs have won their eighth straight thanks in part to Carlos Zambrano's arm and his bat in their 7-6 victory over the Padres.

Chase Utley knocked another homerun for the Phillies to edge passed the Reds, 5-4. The homer marked Utley's fifth straight game with at least one long ball.

Jason Michaels pinch hit grand slam in the seventh tied the game at four runs a piece with Jason Bay knocking in the winning run in the eighth to give the Pirates a 5-4 win over the Cardinals.

Bobby Crosby's game winning RBI single in the ninth gave the A's a go ahead run to take out the Tigers, 3-2.

Congrats to Josh Hamilton and Lance Berkman on being named players of the month.

Get excited kids, Fantasy Baseball Leagues will continue to be able to use player names and statistics without licesning agreements after the Supreme Court refused to hear the case.

Nascar Update:
Dario Franchitti is on the entry list for Pocono this weekend. Click here to see who else is making the trek to Long Pond, PA.

I've been saying it all season, but it's still unfortunate for Mr. McMurray who will not be back with Roush Fenway Racing after this season (as per recent rumors which McMurray is denying). Even though it may not seem like it, I think it's a good thing for Jamie to get out of Roush and land somewhere else where he can show his abilities. He was very good at Ganassi, too bad he left.

Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and teammate Jeff Gordon are not very fond of the current state of Pocono Raceway. Both drivers believe the track is in some serious need for repaving with Gordon going as far as saying the outdated track could be one race shorter in the future. I've been to Pocono and I love the odd configuration, but I've also been to Daytona and yeah, it could use a little sprucing, but losing a date to another cookie cutter track would suck.

Stuck in 11th in points with no wins this season, Tony Stewart is hoping to turn things around. Of course he has other things on his mind, like the Prelude to a Dream event at Eldora on Wednesday.

News&Notes: The Stanley Cup was seconds away from making its grand entrance until Max Talbot knocked in the game tying goal for the Penguins to force the game in overtime. Petr Sykora scored the game winner in the third OT to give Pittsburgh the 4-3 win and force a game 6...I have to admit, I didn't make it the the third OT, I fell asleep during OT 1 and 2, but I have to give my hats off to Ryan Malone who almost popped right up after being drilled by a puck in the first and continued throughout the game, changing his bloody nose tissues on the bench. That right there, is why I love sports...The Broncos dump RB Travis Henry...The Cowboys give T.O. a big payday...Then get word that Pacman Jones is back...kind of, after receiving a partial reinstatement...But ex-Bengal Odell Thurman probably will stay ex for a long time to come after he allegedly violated the League's substance abuse policy for the second time in three seasons...Max Mosley got a vote of confidence to remain FIA president despite the whole Nazi sex scandal. My vote would have been to get this ass out of there. He's bringing more unwanted negative attention to the sport than Flavio Briatore's paternity tests...Michael Johnson says he was "shocked" by Antonio Pettigrew's substance abuse admission and will return his 2000 1,600 meter relay gold medal. When he says "shocked" he means he's shocked that Pettigrew would actually admit to doping, not that he was actually doping right? I mean, it's like a total don't ask, don't tell kind of policy in Olympic sports...well, sports in general.
