Baseball Update:
Ken Griffey, Jr. knocks his 600th career homerun as the Reds shelled the Marlins, 9-4. Griffey became just the 6th player to ever reach that mark and if you cut out the iffy players Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa there are only 3 other players. (Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth and Willie Mays)
Apparently I should be signed up for the psychic friends network after mistakenly saying the White Sox had already swept the Twins, well, they didn't do that until Monday beating Minnesota, 7-5. Nick Swisher got a homer from both sides of the plate.
Cliff Lee got his 10th win of the season and the Indians offense scored eight times in the first two innings in their 8-2 whipping of the Tigers. The Indians featured a scaled down line-up without Victor Martinez and Grady Sizemore but were still able to get the job done. Prior to the start of the game, the Indians sent second baseman Asdrubal Cabrera down and brought up Josh Barfield.
Maybe a little in-fighting is not all bad (although I think there are better ways to bring a club together). Just one night after Matt Garza and Dioner Navarro had to be separated on the mound and the dugout the Rays smashed the Angels, 13-4. Evan Longoria, Willie Aybar and Dioner Navarro went back to back to back for the first time in Rays history.
Mike Mussina had seven flawless innings and then came the eighth and Miguel Olivio who blasted a two run homer that broke up a scoreless tie. But the Yankees weren't ready to lay down with Alex Rodriguez responding with a two run blast of his own. But the almost unscoreable Mariano Rivera gave up the game winning homer in the Yankees 3-2 loss to the Royals.
The Mariners literally squeezed passed the Blue Jays with a suicide squeeze in the 10th in their 3-2 win. For the Mariners, it's doing it anyway you can get it. The win came the same day they announced they had replaced pitching coach Jeff Pentland with special assistant Lee Elia.
Speaking of Mariners pitching rumors are flying that they maybe putting Erik Bedard on the market. That seems kind of crazy, especially since they just gave up the farm for him, but maybe they can improve their farm?
A reversed homerun call played right into the Pirates hands as they passed the Diamondbacks 5-3.
The Mets had the day off but they were still able to produce some bad news, placing Ryan Church on the DL who is still suffering ill effects from a concussion.
The Cardinals placed Adam Wainwright on the DL while the Brewers put Ben Sheets on the DL with a sprained knee.
To avoid any conflict with the NBA Finals, the Red Sox will move up the start time of their games on Tuesday and Thursday from 7:05 PM/est to 6:05 PM/est
Nascar Update:
48 cars on the entry list for this weekend's race in Michigan. Click here to see who is on the list.
Petty Enterprises has announced they will be holding a press conference on Wednesday, but the topic has not been announced. Could it be that they're announcing a new investor? That's the rumor. Or could it be that they are announcing they've re-signed Bobby Labonte? Fine that's not as exciting.
Popo in my crib News:
Apparently it's two strikes and your out for the Bears who have cut ties with Cedric Benson after his second DUI arrest in six weeks. Benson had claimed innocence on both arrests, but that seems a tad bit far fetched. His most recent arrest occured in Austin, TX early Saturday morning. Watch out Cedric, because the popo are on your tail!
News&Notes: Terrell Owens will be placed in the extra testing pile after not getting in contact with the league about a random drug test...Indiana has hired Sam Perkins as their new head coach...Reports have Vinny Del Negro becoming the head coach in Chicago after Doug Collins bowed out of the race...Gilbert Arenas has opted out of his contract with the Wizards...Ricky Hatton has turned down a bout with Oscar De La Hoya in September...The new performance-enhancing drug? Viagra. I think that people are just saying that because they're embarassed to be caught with it.
