Andruw Jones to make Rangers Opening Day squad

While Andruw Jones is no longer a member of the Atlanta Braves I will always hold a special place in my heart for him. His appearance in the 1996 World Series alone is enough for most fans to bow down to him, not to mention the ensuing seasons where he demonstrated his spectacular defensive skills and put on power hitting clinics. That being said, I am glad he had his disastrous 2008 in a Los Angeles Dodgers uniform. And I am also glad Braves GM Frank Wren did not follow the advice of many Braves fans calling for Jones return to Atlanta, especially coming on the heels of the Smoltz debacle.

With all that in mind it is with great pleasure that I write that the Ranges have made room for the former Gold Glover by cutting Frank Catalanotto. (Although I am sure Frank is not too thrilled with the news.)

After a very slow start to Spring Training, Jones has rebounded, posting a .293 batting average with three homeruns and six RBIs in 58 at-bats. Jones will enter a very crowded Texas outfield that includes Josh Hamilton, but hopefully he’ll be able to flourish in the Arlington, TX sun this summer.
