According to espn.com, a merger between the two premiere North American open wheel series Champ Car and the IRL is imminent with an announcement expected on Thursday. The two Series have been involved in serious talks for over two weeks with a major sticking point centered on the IRL’s race in Japan. It will be the first time a open wheel has had one united series since the IRL’s first season in 1996.
With the influx of open wheelers into Nascar and Formula One this season, it’s the perfect time to combine the talent into one series otherwise the Indy 500 would be weaker than normal.
We’ll keep you updated on the tentative merger as more information is released.
