Happy Leap Year Day

Baseball Update:
Our well wishes go out to Former Yankee player and current Yankee Broadcaster Bobby Murcer who will undergo a biopsy on Monday to determine if his brain cancer has recurred.

I know we've been following this story all week, but Mark DeRosa's a local kid, so I had to mention that he underwent successful heart surgery on Thursday and was resting comfortable at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The Cubs are hopeful he'll be ready to play by March 8th.

Tom Gorzelanny was scratched from his scheduled start for the Pirates against the Phillies on Thursday.

I'm sure it's exciting to be a college kid going up against a major league squad, but it's also embarassing when you get your asses handed to you. Such is the case for Boston College who lost to the Boston Red Sox 24-0 in seven innings.

Mariano Rivera is taking spring training super slow. Mo is scheduled to throw off a bullpen mound on Friday and then make his first SP appearance sometime next week.

Randy Johnson threw his first batting practice of Spring Training giving false hopes to Diamondback fans everywhere.

Johan Santana will make his spring training debut for the New York Mets on Friday.

Speaking of the Mets, they will not be disciplined for failing to have four regulars in their exhibition game lineup.

After being forced to wear a helmet while coaching either first or third, base coaches will also be required to stay in their boxes until the batted ball passes them.

Players' Union leader Donald Fehr said he would consider approving blood testing for HGH.

When you're in the middle of a FBI investigation it should come as no surprise that you're personal service contract may be renaged on Mr. Clemens. After all you can't blame the Astros from dropping you, you could end up in jail by the time your ten year personal services contract is up.

Nascar Update:
The big boys keep their west coast swing alive landing in Las Vegas this weekend. The formerly 1.5 mile flat track which was more condusive to the single file racing was overhauled last season to become a multigrove banked track that has lead to more side by side racing. Kyle Busch is the early favorite to take the checkers this weekend at him home track but he'll have to save off Jimmie Johnson who is currently riding a three race win streak at the track. Can one of them find their way towards victory lane? Or will another driver surpass them for the lead? Tune into Fox at 3:30 PM/est to find out who will take the checkers at the UAW-Dodge 400.

Don't count Casey Mears out of the Chase just yet. While his first two races have ended poorly, Mears has plenty of time to rally. But he'll have to turn things around starting this weekend.

News & Notes: As the clock struck midnight on February 29th, the sound of pens touching paper could be heard around the league. Teddy Bruschi put his John Hancock on a multiyear deal that will keep him with the Patriots...Click here for a free agency report round-up...A report has Derek Anderson getting a three year, $20 million deal with the Browns...The Packers official website pulled a story that claimed Brett Farve was going to retire. Great, this proves his team is less informed than Packers fans...The Clippers have released Sam Cassell...The Lakers make it ten straight with their 106-88 win over the Heat...Standord edged Washington, 82-79...While UCLA toasted Arizona State 70-49...Marian Hossa injured his knee in his first game with the Penguins, a 5-1 loss to the Bruins...Brad Richards on the other hand had five assists in his debut with the Stars. Might I add, a 7-4 victorous debut for the Stars...The Rangers made it three in a row with a 4-2 win over the Hurricanes...This is getting ridiculous, Kelly Tilghman, the Golf Channel host who made a horribly unfunny comment regarding Tiger Woods, has been targets by some crazy moron who put a noose around a subdivision sign where the anochor used to live.

Check this out: Just when you thought the striking was over, word is that the Actors Guild is looking to enter talks with the same people who brought us the Writers Strike. Hopefully, we've all learned our lessons. I need good TV desperately! Click here for the details.

It's been fun blogging with you,
Kate
