A Giant Hangover

My morning commute today was brightened by the talk of the Giants Super Bowl win. “Did you see that catch?” a man remarked, referring to David Tyree’s acrobatic grab that kept the drive alive for the Giants. “I backed Eli Manning the whole time, since he was drafted,” another man proudly boasted. Please, not even the most ardent Giants fan can boast that. “That Giants defense really stifled Brady,” someone else noted. It was the sounds that kept me from finishing my book on the train this morning. The sounds of a victory, a Giants Super Bowl victory at that, that made me smile for all 1 hour and 32 minutes of my commute.

The sights, well that’s easy. Giants hats, Giants jerseys, Giants jackets, Giants gear advertised in every newspaper which was opened, of course to the sports section and stacks of newspapers almost at the bottom outside of the Hudson News in Penn Station. Each stack of papers featured a different picture of a glowing Eli Manning holding the Vince Lombardi Trophy with ticker tape falling from the sky like the snow flakes that were falling onto the New York streets this Monday morning.

The Giants beat a team that was deemed unbeatable, on a night that will remain a touchstone in any Giants fan’s mind. A night that may have even swung the pendulum back in New York’s favor, sorry Boston, you had five good months of dominance, but today, New York and its loyal tri-state area are the champions.
