Flu bug ravages Hurricanes' roster

The Carolina Hurricanes roster is being ravaged by a nagging flu bug that has affected all but seven players in the past month. It seems that everday a new player is infected. Carolina defenseman Glen Wesley discribed the illness as "first infect[ing] his chest, then raid[ing] his sinuses and caus[ing] an infection, causing him to miss three straight games."

He's not the only player to contract the disease, fowards Ray Whitney and Trevor Letowski and defenseman Wade Brookbank missed Saturday's 5-4 loss to Colorado but are expected to play against the Maple Leafs. Although Niclas Wallin is planning to stay home from Tuesday's game.

The large number of sick players has lead to a practical revolving door on the team filled by players from their American League affliate in Albany including Brandon Nolan, son of Islanders coach Ted Nolan, who has been called up and sent down three times in just one week.

"The mystery of it all, trying to figure it out from day to day -- that's why these guys have been getting sent down and called up so frequently," coach Peter Laviolette said. "We don't have guys on the (injured list). We don't know when it's going to end, and we don't know when guys are going to be getting back in the lineup and playing."

Luckily for the Canes, the flu seems to be supsiding although it may take a couple of days for the players to regain their strength.

"They are coming off of a lot of days off and not much work," Laviolette said, "It’s going to be a process here to get these guys back on track."
