Dakar Rally back on?

Following last week's announcement of the cancellation of the Dakar Rally, South America maybe stepping up as a new hosting site of the marathon truck, car and motorcycle race. The Chilean head of Tourism Oscar Santelices has sent a formal letter to Dakar organizer Amaury Sports Organization "expressing Chilie's interest to host it." Under the agreement, the Rally would cross through Argentina, Brazil and Chile.

The Dakar Rally, which has run annually since 1979, had been scheduled to take place in Africa but was canceled due to terrorism threats from Al Qa'eda. South America would offer a much safer atmosphere, but will be competing with other sites like Australia, Russia and China. A decision will be made in February.
