The Fake ID Club

When I was growing up there used to be this magazine called Teen People. (I bet you were thinking about I was about to write Sassy, but that’s for another post) Anyway, they used to do an annual issue of the 21 hottest under 21. Well, I couldn’t muster up 21 athletes, but here’s my version of the Fake ID Club.

Sidney Crosby (20) and Jordan Staal (19)
The Penguins will face off against the Red Wings this weekend in the Stanley Cup Finals. It could be billed as the Electric Company vs. Hannah Montana, although I’m not sure that’s quite how they’re doing it, because of Pittsburgh's young team leaders Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin (who at 21 is too old for this list) and Jordan Staal. The team is so young; their 23 year old goalie Marc-Andre Fleury could be considered steps away from the nursing home. (Fine they actually have some players born in the 70s, who would totally get the Electric Company reference, but that’s just not as funny.)

Justin Upton (20)
Upton broke into the majors with the Diamondbacks last season and helped ride that team to the National League Championship Series...where they were promptly swept by the Rockies. Fast forward a couple of months later and Upton and company are leading the West while the Rockies are somewhere south of where they were hoping to be. If he’s anything like his brother B.J. who’s playing over in Tampa Bay, this kid’s got a very bright future ahead of him.

Michael Beasley (19) /Derrick Rose (19)
Both Beasley and Rose are considered the jewels of the NBA draft this season. The pair is thought to go 1-2, landing them in either Chicago or Miami thanks to both team’s lucky draws in this year’s lottery. They both had dominating freshman seasons at Kansas State and Memphis respectively before jumping into the pro leagues and also project to make big impacts on whichever team they land on. Oh to be really young, really talented and soon to be really rich.

Michelle Wie (18)
Wie is an interesting case. The youngster impressed her older counterparts at the many tournaments she entered as a teen, turning pro in 2005, but her lack of trophies and her odd move to the men’s side of things has set her up more as the Anna Kournikova of golf instead of the next Lorena Ochoa or Annika Sorenstam.

Chrissy Wallace (20)
Wallace comes from a long line of racers. Her dad: Nationwide Series drive Mike Wallace. Her Uncles: Cup Series Champion/Race analyst Rusty Wallace and Cup/Nationwide Series driver Kenny Wallace. Her Cousin: Nationwide Series driver Steve Wallace. So it is any surprise that the 20 year old can be seen wheeling a racecar in the ARCA and Truck series? Nascar is searching for their version of Danica Patrick or Ashley Force and Chrissy could be just the ticket.
