Friday Funnies
It's been fun blogging with you,
Kate
It's FRIIIIIIIIIDDDDDAAAAYYYYYYYYY!!!!
After a day off the Braves head home for a crucial series against the New York Mets. Entering the series the Braves are only 4 1/2 games out with about a month left in the season. Stranger things have happened. But they also have to contend with a streaking Philadelphia Phillies team who are starting a series with the Florida Marlins. They also have a 5 game deficit in the Wild Card with the Phillies and Dodgers in front. One things for sure, the Braves will have their aces on the mound beginning with Tim Hudson in tonight's game, possibly Chuck James on Saturday and John Smoltz taking on his golfing buddy Tom Glavine on Sunday. Don't miss a minute of your Braves' action. Watch tonight at 7:35 PM/est on SS.
Games behind NY Mets in NL East: 4.5
Games above .500:4
NL Wild Card Leader: San Diego Padres
Braves Notes: Former Georgia Tech player Mark Teixeira has enjoyed playing for the Atlanta Braves since being acquired in July. And with his production since arriving in Atlanta, we'd say we've enjoyed having him play first!..Uh, oh, the Braves right fielder Jeff Francoeur who has played in 298 consecutive games says he's beginning to feel a little tired. Luckily the Braves had Thursday off to get ready for their series with the Metsies...Those kids from Auburn, Tyler Crawford and Andrew Hall, who sang that great song about Mark Teixeira that was everywhere last week including this blog are going to sing at Turner Field tonight.
Random Quote: "He's a special player. He gives you everything he's got every time he goes out there." - Bobby Cox on Mark Teixeira
NASCAR Update:
In the new tradition of Labor Day weekend, the boys will be out in LaLa land for the Sharp Aquos 500 on Sunday night. With only two races left, it's up to Dale Earnhardt, Jr. to run extremely well in hopes of making the Chase or just to win a race this year! California is a flat 2 mile oval which has matured with age opening up the racing surface for side by side battles. Look for Roush cars to run well here. And even though he has had a poor year, maybe last week's second place finish will turn into a win for last year's winner Kasey Kahne. Watch the race live on ESPN at 8:15 PM/est.
A new report says that Joe Gibbs Racing will be moving to Toyota for 2008. They will by far be the class of the Toyota field with Bill Davis Racing, Red Bull Racing and Michael Waltrip Racing being the other three teams.
Don't forget, CMT will air Dale an insider's view into one of racings legends. It features never before seen home video of Dale Earnhardt with his friends and family. The movie has been opening up in theaters corresponding with the NASCAR schedule this season, but this viewing offers an opportunity for those who are not lucky enough to live near those tracks to see this movie. It has gotten rave reviews and will be preceeded by an hour long preshow. So set your DVR/Tivo/VCRs because it's worth a watch. Check it out Monday, September 4th night at 8 PM/est on CMT.
UPDATE: I totally was looking at a calendar when I wrote this, but Dale airs on TUESDAY! Also the preshow starts at 7 PM/est. (thx)
News & Notes: The Yankees' Indian outlaw Joba Chamberlain was tossed in the ninth after throwing a wild pitch over Kevin Youkilis' head. But the Yanks were able to pull of a sweep of the Boston Red Sox with a 5-0 win...All the action wasn't limited to the field. Red Sox manager Terry Francona was called out of the dugout so MLB officials could make sure he was wearing his uniform under his pull over. Apparently Francona was a little "perturbed" about the incident...Meanwhile, the Mets found new ways to lose games to the Phillies this week including a take out play by Marlon Anderson which resulted in a double play that ended the game for the Mets on Wednesday. On Thursday, the Mets left it up to their closer Billy Wagner to blow the game for them. Chase Utley drove in the winning run in the ninth for the Phillies' 11-10 win and sweep of their cross-state rivals....College Football opened up on Thursday. #10 Louisville had a big win, a 73-10 win over Murray State. Brian Brohm threw for 375 yards with five touchdowns...Not to be out done, #2 LSU killed Mississippi State 45-0...And finally, almost a month after the tragic bridge collapse that postponed the original grounbreaking, the Twins were able to celebrate their future with the planned ceremony. The new stadium will 40,000 seats, cost $522 million and is scheduled to open in 2010. I hope it will still have the garbage bag outfield walls.Check this out: Don't miss Miranda Lambert and Jack Ingram performing together on CMT's Cross Country tonight at 10 PM/est. You can see a sneak peak here.
I'm not sure if I'll be able to post on Monday, so for all you readers out there, have a great Labor Day Weekend!

Kenny Suprise
Roger Clemens and Johnny Damon (We thought the third one was maybe Andy Phillips, but I'm not sure.)
This isn't the first time I've seen Kenny, it's actually the third. Everytime I've seen him perform "Back Where I Come From" he's done it with a special guest. Ranking them is somewhat hard but...
(Eli and Kenny at MSG in 2006)
Vocally - Eli Manning was the best. (Way better than Peyton in the Kenny Chesney CMT Special. At least Eli has the heads up on Peyton in one thing.)
Style - that goes to Dale Earnhardt, Jr., he was a lot more fun. I saw them perform this song at the Dale Earnhardt Tribute Concert in 2003. Junior just seemed genuinely excited to see everyone come out to in support of his late father at the track where he lost his life. But his vocals were terrible. At one point, Kenny moved the microphone away from Juniors vicinity. It was great. June only did the first part but Eli sang the whole way through. That's why I have to give the edge to Eli.
You couldn't really hear the Yankees sing, although at one point you could see them all around the microphone, but it was too hard to tell.
Click here for another Yankee Clip and here for Sugarland singing "Irreplaceable."

Separated at Birth
I'm also totally excited to be seeing Kenny in person tonight at MSG. It's not completely sold out, so if you're in the New York area and are looking for something to do tonight, check out one of country's finest. Sugarland and Pat Green are the opening acts so you certainly can't go wrong!

The Real 23
Yesterday I mentioned the outstanding play of Brian McCann and Mark Teixeira, but I left one person off, and I think he was out to prove himself in the Braves 7-4 win over the Florida Marlins. Matt Diaz had two monster homeruns, his first ever multihomer night. This coming just two days off of a 4-6 night in Miami. Yunel Escobar scored his first ever lead off homerun and Buddy Carlyle was able to keep the Fish at bay even though he allowed a homerun to the opposing pitcher Dontrelle Willis, his second of the season. I guess what I'm most excited about is that the Braves actually won a series! It was a trying road trip that should have propelled them into the thick of the NL East battle, but instead the Braves stand 5 games back of the Mets. Luckily for the Braves they'll have today off before returning home to play the Mets in an important three game series. The Braves can make up some big ground on the suddenly slumping Metsies.
Games behind NY Mets in NL East: 5
Games above .500: 4
NL Wild Card Leader: San Diego Padres
Braves Notes: Chuck James looks like he maybe ready to come off the DL just in time for his start on Sunday against the Mets...Chipper Jones has been playing through pain, this time in his right shoulder. The MVP third baseman says it hurts when he swings and throws and especially when he's batting left handed, but contends he will stay in the lineup to help the Braves' push towards the playoffs...Octavio Dotel left the team on Thursday to return to the Dominican Republic to attend his grandmother's funeral.
Random Quote: "We have confidence that every day we go out there, today is the day we turn it around. We've got a lot of time left the last month to accomplish what we want." - Chipper Jones (source)
NASCAR Update:
ESPN.com is reporting that Regan Smith will be announced as the driver of the #01 car for DEI in 2008. Smith had been sharing time with Mark Martin in the #01 this season.
Jimmie Johnson held a golf outting in his hometown of El Cajon, CA on Wednesday to raise money for Habitat for Humanity. Johnson estimates he could have raised a half a million dollars. And unlike his last outting on the golf course in December, he made it through without breaking a bone, spraining something or needing stitches. Good Job!
Popo in my crib News:
"Pop singer" El DeBarge was arrested on Wednesday for domestic violence. He is currently holed up in the Men's Central Jail in LA without an option to post bail. Watch out El, because the popo are on your tail!
News & Notes: Looks like the Cleveland Indians have figured out Johan Santana this season after Wednesday night's 4-3 win, the Tribe are now 4-0 against him...The San Diego Padres proved they are not content with just the Wild Card after sweeping the Arizona Diamondbacks including Wednesday's 3-1 win and taking the top spot in the NL West...Ben Sheets came off the DL just in time for the Milwaukee Brewers who were able to get a 6-1 win and against the Chicago Cubs to move back into second place in the NL Central standings...The Cincinnati Bengals will be without defensive lineman Frostee Rucker for their opener on September 10th against the Baltimore Ravens after he was suspended by the league on Wednesday. Rucker pleaded guilty to one count of false imprisonment and one coutn of vandalism in May...Tennessee quarterback Erik Ainge will play with a broken pinky on his throwing hand on Saturday in their game against Cal. This is so like Friday Night Lights when people have to play with ribs stiking out and stuff...In on my goodness, I totally forgot about you news, the Milwaukee Bucks and Yi Jianlian have actually come to terms on a contract. It only took a little cross the world trip to get it done...And finally, Danville, CA officials ordered resident David Lowe to tear down his 18,000 square foot private little league baseball field. The field, which cost a couple hundred thousand to build, had Astroturf, a batting cage and a motorized pitching machine.

what's a girl to wear?
(If you like any item listed below I put a link to where you can purchase them online.)
This shirt says, "I went to a Diamondbacks game and all I got was this crappy vacation tee."
"Fashion Tee"
To be fair, you can get a jersey made for women in the proper colors, but that wouldn't be as much fun. You should totally go for pink rhinestones or other fashion colors. One question, didn't Eli veto going to San Diego?
Hats
One bottle of tums down...
The Braves seemed to use up all their offense in Monday's 13-2 victory. John Smoltz, pitching on three days rest, held the Marlins to just three runs over six innings and struck out seven. But the Marlins had nothing on the Braves who struck out 19 times including five by Jeff Francoeur, in their 4-3 loss. Chipper Jones tied the game up at 3 a piece with a two run homer in the eighth but the Braves were held scoreless through the rest of the game. Oscar Villarreal gave up the game winning hit in the 11th to Alejandro De Aza that scored Alfredo Amezega. The Braves who are now 3-6 on this road trip will look to salvage the series against a struggling Dontrelle Willis. The action starts at 7:05 PM/est on FSN.
Games behind NY Mets in NL East: 6
Games above .500: 3
NL Wild Card Leader: San Diego Padres
Braves Notes: Both Mark Teixeira and Brian McCann are heating up in the dog days of August. Teixeira recieved NL player of week honors and McCann has hit five homers in the past nine games. Now if only everything would start clicking for that post season run.
NASCAR Update:
Ken Schrader will be giving the command to start the race from his truck on Sunday at Gateway International. He'll then jump in his street car and head up to I-55 Raceway in Pevely, MO, a track he co-owns and compete.
Sad news, Jack Roush's mother, Georgetta Roush has passed away at the age of 92.
Popo in my crib News:
A little update on the Lance Briggs story. Turns out he was driving his black lamborghini which he rapped around a light pole. He fled the scene, panicked and called the police and told them that the car was stolen. He later admitted that he was actually driving the car. When asked by reporters if he thought Briggs was under the influence while driving the car, coach Lovie Smith got upset like that was not a logical question. Watch out Lance, because the popo are on your tail!
Houston Rockets Guard Rafer Alston was arrested on Tuesday for stabbing a man at a Manhattan nightclub. Apparently the two men bumped into each other at Club Stero and got into an argument. Alston then slashed the man's neck. Because who doesn't get bumped into at a club in New York? Alston was arraigned on felon assault charges and then was released. But this isn't Alston's first brush with the popo this month, Rafer was arrested three weeks ago for public intoxication and misdemeanor assault in Houston. Watch out Rafie, because the popo are on your tail!
News & Notes: Sad news from the world of soccer yesterday when 22 year old Sevilla player Antonio Puerta died on Tuesday, three days after collapsing on the field. Puerta was able to walk off the field but then went into cardiac arrest in the locker room and was rushed to a nearby hospital. He is survived by his wife who is very much pregnant with their first child...The Yankees pulled struggling start Mike Mussina from the rotation and will replace him with Ian Kennedy. Oh and they beat the Red Sox 5-3 off of a Johnny Damon homerun...The Mets had the opposite kind of night in Philly, after leading 2-0, the Metsies allowed the Phils to tie it on a Aaron Rowand dribbler in the ninth which forced the game into extra innings. And then Ryan Howard did what he does best, hit a walk-off homerun...At this point, if you can't score against the Orioles, you should just close down your franchise. After last week's 30 run special by the Texas Rangers, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays notched 11 runs in one inning against the O's in their 15-8 win...And finally, the Giants GM Jerry Reese told reporters he has had constructive talks with holdout Michael Straham. Mikey, I love you, but seriously either get your ass on the field or hang out with Tiki on NBC's broadcast and taunt Eli Manning, becuase he needs all the motivation he can get!

Short Cuts
When bats attack
The Braves took their previous week's frustration out on the Marlins on Monday in their 13-2 killing. Lance Cormier was able to pick up his first win of the season while Matt Diaz had an impressive 4-6 day with a homerun and Brian McCann picked up his second grand slam in the past eight days. The Braves hope to keep their offense rolling against the fish tonight at 7:10 PM/est on SS.
Games behind NY Mets in NL East: 6
Games above .500: 4
NL Wild Card Leader: San Diego Padres
Braves Notes: The Braves will split aces Tim Hudson and John Smoltz in the rotation by moving Smoltzie's start up to Tuesday and moving back Buddy Carlyle to Wednesday...The Braves recalled Pete Orr on Monday from AAA-Richmond...To make space for Pete, the Braves sent reliever Joey Devine down to AAA-Richmond.
NASCAR Update:
A new report says Robert Yates Racing asked NASCAR to transfer the #38 to Hendrick Motorsports. The number would combine Dale Earnhardt's legendary 3, which he raced from 1984-2001 and Dale Earnhardt, Jr.'s familiar 8.
Popo in my crib news:
Gene Haas, owner of NASCAR's Haas CNC Racing pled guilty to a felony conspiracy charge for orchestrating a plan to list fake expenses that could be used as tax right offs. Haas cheated the government out of more than $34 million and will be sentenced on November 5th. He faces a recommended two years in jail. Watch out Gene, because the popo are on your tail!
Allen Iverson's stepfather has been indicted on federal drug distribution charges. Michael Andre Freeman was arrested in April after the popo found crack cocaine in his car. I wonder if he was freinds with this guy. Watch out Mikey, because the popo are on your tail!
In don't hate yourself news, Idaho Sen. Larry Craig pled guilty to disorderly conduct in connection with a lewd conduct in the men's room that involved an plain clothes male officer at a Minneapolis airport in June. Craig has a strong record of voting against gay rights issues. At 62, he is a married man but rumors of his leanings have been been swirling since the 1980s. Larry have you met former New Jersey governor Jim McGreevy? Watch out Larry, because the popo are on your tail!
News & Notes: The Houston Astros fired their manager Phil Garner and GM Tim Purpura after falling 15 games below .500. Only two years ago the Astros were fighting for a World Series title against the Chicago White Sox (who have indured an equally horrible season). Bench coach Cecil Cooper was appointed interim manager and team president Tal Smith will be interim general manager...It was not a good night to be a New York baseball fan as the Yanks fell 16-0 to the Detroit Tigers and the Mets only lost 9-2 to the Philadelphia Phillies. Chase Utley had three hits including a homerun in his first game back from the DL for the Phils...The Cleveland Indians turned a rare triple play in their 8-3 win over the Minnesota Twins...U.S. Attonery General Alberto Gonzalez is stepping down from his post...And finally, Arthur Blank, the owner of the Atlanta Falcons, was in a giving mood on Monday when he told reporters he was not planning on cutting convicted felond, Michael Vick because it could damage the team in the long run. I told you those guys at Home Depot are understanding. They let half their work force have two whole weeks off every four years!
UPDATE: I am really late on this story, since it apparently came out six days ago, but I did want to mention it because I happen to frequent this place a few times a year. Continental Airlines has opted out of its sponsorship contract with the Meadowlands Arena that has bared its name for the past 12 years. In its contract with the NJSEA, Continental was able to opt out after a major change, i.e. the Devils moving to the Prudential Center in Newark. (Sorry, I just threw up a little bit.) Continental will remain on the building until the NJSEA can find a new sponsor. How about returning it to the old Brendan Byrne Arena? Those were the good days. Plus the next sponsor will opt out when the Nets move to Brooklyn anyway.

"We just have to win some games!" - Bobby Cox
The Braves were without the Jones boys on Sunday and that certainly didn't help them in their 4-1 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. Brian McCann, who has really stepped up for the Braves since the all-star break, drove in the only run during the sixth inning, while JoJo Reyes was praised by manager Bobby Cox for his "finest outing"of the season. But a three run fifth by the Cards broke open a scoreless affair and put the game out of reach for Atlanta. The Braves begin a series with the Marlins on Monday. Lance Cormier will take on Scott "taser" Olsen at 7:10 PM/est on SS.
Games behind NY Mets in NL East: 7
Games above .500: 3
NL Wild Card Leader: San Diego Padres
Braves Notes: Don't forget to vote for Chipper Jones in the "Hammer" competition...TBS is asking Braves fans to vote for their favorite Braves moment here.
NASCAR Update:
Carl Edwards won what he called his biggest race ever on Saturday at Bristol beating Kasey Kahne by a wide margian while clinching a spot in the Chase for the Nextel Cup. The Chase standings saw little movement as Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Kurt Busch both finished in the top six. Junior has to win the next two races and pray Busch has terrible finishes if he has any hope of making it.
Race Results Points Standings
NASCAR admitted they made a scoring error against Kyle Busch on Friday during the Busch Series race. NASCAR thought Busch had passed the committment line and dropped him from his second place spot to 28th. When they discovered their error it was too late to return him to his proper place. Busch finished fourth.
In I want to be like Juan Pablo news, former F1 star Jacques Villeneuve will be working with Bill Davis Racing this year to get acclimated with stock cars.
Popo in my Crib News:
Arkansas suspended their DE Marcus Harrison after he was arrested on Friday. Harrison was pulled over when a member of the popo smelled marijuana coming from his car. After a search of his vehicle, the popo found two cigarrettes that tested positive for the drug. Harrison was booked and was being held on charges of felony possession of a controleld substance, speeding, driving with a restricted drivers' license and not wearing a seat belt. Watch out Marcus, because the popo are on your tail!
UPDATE: A 2007 black Lamborghini registerd to Chicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs was found abandoned on the northbound side of I-94 near the Devon Avenue exit on Monday. It appeared to have crashed into a light pole. While no one was found near the car, whoever was driving it would face improper lane usage and leaving the scene of the accident. All I have to say is, Lance if you were not driving this car, this is why you don't let friend drive your super expensive Italian sportscar. And if you were driving it, watch out, because the popo are on your tail!
News & Notes: Congratulations to Georgia who beat Japan, 3-2 to take the Little League World Series title on Sunday. If only professional American athletes could put aside their egos and work like a team to destroy the world in international competition...The Red Sox swept the White Sox this weekend after winning 11-1 on Sunday. The White Sox remain in the cellar of the AL Central right below the Royals...After the Phillies bullpen threw another game on Saturday, a 4-3 loss to the San Diego Padres, Brett Meyers got into a little tiff with a local reporter. Meyers even had to be restrained by Pat Burrell after the reporter asked him to spell retard. I'm thinking this is the best defense Burrell has played all year...In we don't need no stinkin' Chase news, Scott Dixon took back the points lead from Dario Franchitti on Sunday after winning at Infineon Raceway. Franchitti had another hard luck race after being involved in a wreck with his 20 year old teammate, Marco Andretti. Dixon leads Dario by just four points with only two races remaining in the season...Mark Cuban will star in this season's "Dancing With the Stars." I'm guessing this can only be better than his first foray into the reality tv world...Finally, congratulations to Dallas Star Mike Modano and "I Wanna Be Bad" singer Willa Ford on their marriage over the weekend in Athens...Athens, TX.

My Boys Monday
PJ – Erin Andrews
PJ is a successful sports writer for the Chicago Sun Times. Her focus is the Chicago Cubs and she has an odd way of relating everything to baseball. In real life, Erin Andrews is a commentator for ESPN. You’ll probably recognize her giving heart warming stories from the seats during ESPN’s weekly baseball coverage, or anchoring ESPN’s coverage of the College World Series, among many other things. She’s also a hit on sports blogs, and we’re pretty sure PJ would be too.
Kenny - Nomar Garciaparra
Kenny could have probably starred in Superbad, as the nerdy kid trying to lose his virginity at 18. On the show he enjoys taking women out for coffee, he dated a pregnant woman and has a serious case of OCD. Between his color coded closet and creepy baseball card filing system, he’s almost certifiable. Even though we’re pretty sure Nomar was a hit with the ladies before marrying soccer superstar Mia Hamm, it’s the OCD part that reminds us of Kenny. Don’t believe us; just watch Nomar when he goes up to bat.
Mike – Ryan Langerhans
Mike had everything going for him including a plush job in the Cubs front office until the Cubs reorganized and he was out. He spent the past few months doing yoga with the mommy and me set until he started working for Kenny at his sports memorabilia shop. Ryan Langerhans made his mark during the Baby Braves movement in the 2005 season. While Jeff Francouer and Brian McCann continue excelling for the Braves, Langerhans has been shipped off; first to Oakland and then to DC. But on August 18th, Langy was sent to the minors. Ouch!
Bobby – Paul Menard
Bobby was the final edition to weekly poker nights at PJ’s. He’s also a fellow baseball writer. But recently we found out something new about him, he’s totally loaded. Paul Menard was the final puzzle in DEI’s three team plan. Menard had gained notoriety as Martin Truex, Jr.’s quasi teammate in the Busch Series before moving up to the 15 car this season. He was also one of two non-Cup drivers to win a race in that series in 2006. But Menard didn’t just bring his racing talent; he also brought the backing of a multibillion dollar corporation, Menard’s, a hardware chain, which is owned by his dad John Menard, Jr. (#114 on 2006 Forbes 400 list)
Brendan was PJ’s roommate in college and was generally a love sick, laid back guy who lived for music. Ever since his was picked one of Chicago’s hottest bachelors, he’s changed, even dating two girls at once. But you had to see that coming after last season’s on-again off-again relationship with Wendy. Barry Zito was known for his out there laid back style, scoring the forever hot Alyssa Milano and tween queen, Hilary Duff. But ever since he signed that mega contract with San Francisco, well let’s just say things have not been the same.
Andy is PJ’s older brother and lone married person amongst the group. Andy lives and dies by his cell phone, waiting for the next call from his supposedly controlling wife, Meredeth. (Although after his birthday party, we’ve learned better.) Doug Christie is a former NBA player, whose tight relationship with his wife has drawn snickers from his fellow players and sports writers alike. He’s known to flash signs to his wife Jackie in the stands during games. She also traveled with him, not trusting the local skanks that litter players off the court. The two even wrote a book together and starred in a BET reality series. Talk about being whipped.
Stephanie has spent the greater part of two seasons ssearching for love. Whether it be on match.com or with Gregg from accounting, she’s always looking in all the wrong places. I mean her debt councilor, really? On the other side of the coin, Heather Mitts maybe known to millions as an Olympic soccer star, but she also has another impressive resume. Mitts has dated Philadelphia's top athletic bachelors like the Phillies’ Pat Burrell and the Eagles’ A.J. Feely. But with the beginning of the US Open today, you may see Mitts cheering on her new beau James Blake.

Working for the Man
O.J. Simpson’s caddy
O.J. can teach him how to avoid a conviction next time. "If the glove don't fit..."
I hear he’s got some connections. And judging from their sponsorship of Tony Stewart, they’re ok with people having a record. Although those battery charges were never filed by that photographer or Brian Vickers…well, maybe he can work at Lowe's.
Pacman Jones’ body guard
Jones is always on the hunt for another moron to assault someone at a strip club and Michael could be that person. And anyway, it’s always hard to keep good help...especially if they are always going to jail.
Quarterback in the CFL/Mark Cuban’s new football league
The CFL or Mark Cuban’s new league would be looking for superstars. No matter what you say about his off the field actions, he is a solid quarterback.
