Winter Classic Double Header

The NHL is looking to double the fun on January 1, 2010 by reportedly having not one but two different Winter Classics. The first - widely rumored, but not officially announced - to be played at Fenway between the Boston Bruins and likely the Washington Capitals. The second would be held in Calgary’s McMahon Stadium – the site of the opening and closing ceremonies for the 1988 Winter Olympics. The game would be between the Calgary Flames and likely a second Canadian team.

I am not sure I like the idea. Personally, I enjoy having the one stand alone game as a nice alternative to the litany of college football games that take place on New Year’s Day. Expanding the idea could lead to the event losing its specialness.

The NHL has hosted two successful Classics. The first was between the Buffalo Sabres and Pittsburgh Penguins held in Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo and the second was between the Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings held in Wrigley Field in Chicago.
