New Members Club

Thanks to the rain and a very late start, I am doing things a bit backwards today. Here's a look at the news from the last 24 hours.

Baseball: Baseball's newest member of the 300 wins club is Randy Johnson after the Giants stung the Nats, 5-1. Congratulations Randy!...Melky Cabrera's two run homer in the eighth was the difference maker in the Yankees 8-6 edging of the Rangers...Bombers pitcher A.J. Burnett is appealing a six game suspension. Yeah, it's not like he hit the guy...The Red Sox completed a three game sweep of the Tigers, 6-3. Dontrelle Willis had an interesting start, allowing five runs without giving up a hit...Big Papi is going to have his eyes checked. How Brian McCann of you...Cole Hamels stiffled the Dodgers as the Phillies went onto a 3-0 victory...The Pirates players are not too happy about the trade of Nate McLouth...And it seems they took their frustration out on Mets pitcher Mike Pelfrey in their 11-6 drubbing...Bad news for the Mets, reliever J.J. Putz will be out for 8 to 10 weeks after undergoing elbow surgery...And Jose Reyes may not be back until the All-Star break...Jason Kubel hit a pair of three run homers as the Twins trounced the Indians, 11-3...Tony La Russa is suing over a fake twitter page. I hope this trend doesn't catch on, because there will be A LOT of lawsuits coming...Very good news, Rockies catcher Yorvit Torreabla's 11 year old son and brother-in-law have been released after being kidnapped on their way to school...Sad news, former Indian's owner and name sake for Jacobs Field (now Progressive Field), Richard E. Jacob has passed away. He was 84.

Basketball: Kobe's forty helped lift the Lakers by the Magic, 100-75. I hope the rest of the series doesn't go this way...LeBron James was fined $25,000 for his snub...Meanwhile Cavs owner Dan Gilbert is guaranteeing a championship for the city of Cleveland. Don't go making promises you can't provide...Now here's a movie I'll have to avoid. Yao Ming will voice a character in a new Chinese animated film...Sad news, former NBA player Randy Smith has died at the age of 60.

Football: The NFLPA reached a $26 million settlement with retirees...The Cardinals signed Adrian Wilson to a five year, $39 million contract with $18.5 million guaranteed.

Hockey: The Penguins evened up the series with a 4-2 win over the Red Wings. The series heads back to Detroit for game 5 on Saturday...Red Wing Pavel Datsyuk is iffy for Saturday's game...The Avs have hired Joe Sacco as their new head coach...NBC and the NHL are looking to renew their contract. Honestly, I am not a huge fan of NBC's coverage of the NHL.

Nascar: Welcome to double file restarts. Excellent idea, but how about leaving major changes to the racing format for the off season...Penske owner Roger Penske is close to finalizing a deal that would allow him to purchase Saturn from GM...Richard Childress was elected to the board of the NRA.

Best of the Rest: Former University of Memphis forward Robert Dozier's SAT score was invalidated. Do we see a pattern coming out of Memphis?...Fresh off his early exit at the French Open, Rafael Nadal has announced he will skip a tournament at the Queen's Club due to a knee injury...Congrats to Lance Armstrong and his girlfriend Anna Hansen on the birth of their son Max.
