Senseless

Well known Iowa High School football coach Ed Thomas was shot and killed in the weight room of Aplington-Parkersburg High. The alleged gunman was 24-year-old Mark Becker, a former student and football player at the school. As school was not in session, there were about 50 students on school grounds, including some who witnessed the attack in the weight room. None thankfully were injured. As a courtesy, the school has dispatched counselors to talk to any student who believes it would be beneficial to discuss the incident.

Thomas was named the 2005 NFL High School Football Coach of the Year and amassed a 292-84 record in 37 years as a football coach, 34 of them at Aplington-Parkerburg. During his tenure, he also coached four current NFL players, Casey Wiegmann of the Denver Broncos; Jared DeVries of the Detroit Lions; Brad Meester of the Jacksonville Jaguars; and Aaron Kampman of the Green Bay Packers.

Weather permitting, a vigil will talk place at the field at 7 PM local time on Wednesday. My deepest condolences go out to Mr. Thomas’s family and friends.

Watch out Mark, because the popo are on your tail!
