Piling On




Baseball: After a five and a half hour rain delay, the Yankees were finally blanked by the Nationals, 3-0. I am sure that the eleven people that stayed to watch the game were happy to see that...Speaking of scoreless, the Braves ended a four game slide after shutting out the Reds, 7-0. Tommy Hanson, have I told you lately that I love you? (Well as long as you keep on winning)...The Tigers avoided a sweep, doubling up the Cardinals, 6-3...Magglio Ordonez was noticably absent from Detroit's lineup...And the Tigers placed Dontrelle Willis on the DL with anxiety...The Cardinals activated SS Khalil Greene from the DL...Also avoiding a sweep were the Marlins who topped the Red Sox, 2-1 in a rain shortened game...Not so lucky were the Phillies who fell victim to their former teammate Rod Barajas after he hit the game winning homer off of Ryan Madson in the Blue Jays 8-7 victory. The win allowed the Jays to finishe their sweep...The Phillies place Raul Ibanez on the 15 day DL with a groin injury...The Orioles broke an 0-for-34 slide when trailing after eight innings on Thursday when Aubrey Huff drove in the game winner off of Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez in the O's 5-4 win...Nick Blackburn tossed his first career complete game as the Twins tackled the Pirates, 5-1...Joe Torre moved into fifth all time in managerial wins after the Dodgers edged the A's, 3-2...The Cubs rallied in the ninth to take out the White Sox, 6-5...Sad news, former Giant Dusty Rhodes has passed away at the age of 82.

Basketball: A report is claiming Mav Dirk Nowitzki wants custody of his unborn child. Good call, his lady friend seems to be a bit crazy...Greg Odom wants to come back to the Lakers...Coach K isn't sure he'll continue to coach Team US.

Football: The NFL has suspended Donte Stallworth indefinitely without pay after his pleaded guilty to DUI manslaughter...Ryan Leaf is scheduled to surrender to police on Friday.


Hockey: Congrats to Alexander Ovechkin who took home his second straight Hart Trophy. Congrats also goes out to all the other winners including Pavel Datsyuk who picked up the Selke Trophy, Tim Thomas who walked about with the Vezina Trophy and Teammate Zdeno Chara who earned the Norris Trophy. Click here for a full list...The Coyotes have asked a judge to set a September 15th deadline for the sale of the Club...President Obama called Pens coach Dan Bylsma to congratulate him on winning the Cup...The Penguins signed Alex Goligoski to a three year, $5.5. million contract...Hockey great Guy Lafluer was given a one-year suspended sentence, a $100 fine and ordered to donate $10,000 to charity after being found guilty of lying to the court. Watch out Guy, because the popo are on your tail! ...19 current and former NHLers are suing Ken Jowdy claiming they were dupped out of $25 million for a golf resort that is currently seven years behind schedule. Jowdy, they claim, used the money to entertain baseball players like Roger Clemens and Reggie Jackson. Watch out Ken, because the NHL is on your tail!

Nascar: Carl Long's suspension was reduced to eight races from 12, but his fine remained $200,000.

Best of the Rest: The first day of the US Open at Bethpage was cut short due to the completely crappy weather surrounding the New York area. Judging by weather.com it's not going to get much better the rest of the way...It's not going to be an easy run for Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon...Brazil stiffled the US, 3-0 in the Confederations Cup. The U.S. is 0-2 in Cup play.
