Steel City

Baseball: Jason Varitek and the Red Sox have come to terms on a one year, $5 million contract...The Mets avoided arbitration with John Maine...The Rays signed LHP Brian Shouse to a two year deal...And the Pirates locked up Paul Maholm to a three year, $14.5 million deal...White Sox slugger Carlos Quentin is feeling healthy...Speaking of the Chisox, they will not go after any high priced free agents...Welcome back to Citigroup's naming rights saga again. Basketball: Make it 11 in a row for the Celtics who beat the T'Wolves, 109-101...LeBron James had 33 points in the Cavs 90-80 victory over the Pistons...The Lakers are awaiting a MRI on Andrew Bynum's knee...The Magic spanked the Raptors 113-90 as fans rained boos on Toronto's Chris Bosh...The rumor mill is heating up. Apparently Dwayne Wade could be joining LeBron James in New York. Is this just because the current state of the Knicks is so depressing we need to look well into the future to see something bright?

College Basketball: Bob Knight might be interested in taking over the vacant Georgia head coaching job...Penn State edged #9 Michigan State, 72-68...They probably won't be #1 for much longer, but Duke got an easy 79-54 win over Viriginia.


Football: A late touchdown catch by Santonio Holmes sealed the 27-23 victory for the Steelers giving Pittsburgh it's 6th Championship...Holmes was named MVP of the Super Bowl...Well wishes go out to Panthers owner Jerry Richardson who underwent a heart transplant on Sunday...Sad news, former union chief John Gordy has passed away. He was 73.

Hockey: Alexander Ovechkin had a hat trick in the Capitals 7-4 spanking of the Senators...Between their 1-0 win over the Rangers on Saturday and their 3-1 victory over the Canadiens on Sunday, I'd say the Bruins had a very successful weekend...The same cannot be said for the Penguins who dropped their second straight game 5-4 to the Maple Leafs...

Best of the Rest: Rafael Nadal survived another marathon match, this time against Roger Federer, to win the Aussie Open...After winning the Aussie Open, Serena Williams has moved to #1 in the world...Michael Phelps is sorry for the recent photo of himself smoking something not quite legal in the US. I say he's 23 and it's better than a DUI so no need to apologize to me...Golf Coast Entertainment has purchased Memphis Motorsports Park for $10 million. Golf Coast's investors include Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and his sister Kelley.
