It’s On: 2009 MLB Playoffs

ALDS
Yankees v. Twins
Game 1: Wednesday, October 7 at 6:07 PM

The Twins--fresh off a dramatic extra innings victory over the Tigers on Tuesday--arrived in New York at 3 AM, giving them just about 15 hours to recover and refocus on their impending series against the New York Yankees who just happen to possess the best record in the Majors. The Bombers will send up ace CC Sabathia for game 1 while the Twins have rookie Brian Duensing taking the mound but even bigger than the pitching disparity is the Yankees powerful lineup which features nine players who hit at least 10 homeruns and seven that hit 20 dingers this season. The question remains can the Twins and their small ball compete with the thunderous Yankees’ lineup?

News&Notes: The regulars season doesn’t mean much, but it should be noted that the Yankees are 7-0 against the Twins in 2009…Jose Molina will catch A.J. Burnett for Game 2. This is something Jorge Posada is not thrilled about.

Angels v. Red Sox
Game 1: Thursday, October 8 at 9:37 PM

For the third straight year and fourth time since 2004, the Angels will take on the Red Sox in the ALDS. But will history be able to repeat itself? The Red Sox come into the Series riding high thanks to a sweep of the Indians, but prior to those four victories, Boston had lost eight of ten including three to the Blue Jays and three to the Yankees. Meanwhile the Angels seem more determined than ever to advance to the ALCS. With heavy hearts, Los Angeles is playing this postseason in memory of their late teammate Nick Adenhardt who was killed in April. Will that motivation be enough to finally get the Angels over the hump?

News&Notes: Angels reliever Jason Bulger received a cortisone shot in his shoulder on Sunday but hopes his injury will not keep him out of the Divisional Series.

NLDS
Phillies v. Rockies
Game 1: Wednesday, October 7 at 2:37 PM

In 2007, a red hot Colorado Rockies team rode into Philadelphia as the Wild Card team and promptly swept the Phillies in three games. In 2009, a red hot Colorado Rockies team comes in Philly ready to do it again, but the Fightin’ Phils are ready to just roll over and die. The team will start newly acquired Cliff Lee in game 1, who began his career in Philadelphia perfect, until stumbling in his final six starts. The Rockies, on the other hand, maybe without Jorge De La Rosa, but they’ll still have Ubaldo Jimenez and Jason Marquis ready to go. So can the Rockies maintain their scorching pace, or will the Phillies come out on top this time around?

News&Notes: Phillies reliever J.C. Romero will miss five-to-six months after undergoing surgery to repair the flexor tendon in his left forearm on Wednesday…As noted above, Jorge De La Rosa will not play for the Rockies in the Divisional Series…Todd Helton is the Rockies.

Dodgers v. Cardinals
Game 1: Wednesday, October 7 at 9:37 PM

The Dodgers come into the playoffs lumbering. The team that could have locked up the NL West over a week ago wasn’t able to clinch the title until the final Saturday of the season. The Cardinals meanwhile bring the best 1-2 punch in the playoffs with 2009 Comeback Player of the Year Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright. Both have a legitimate shot at the NL Cy Young Award and both should send shivers down the spine of every Dodgers batter. And I haven’t even mentioned Albert Pujols yet. So can the Dodgers reverse their slide in time? Or will this be a cake walk for the 2006 World Champs?

News&Notes: The Dodgers will start Ronnie Belliard at second base for Game 1.
