Getting things started on North American soil

Basketball: The Nets topped the Heat, 100-98 (OT) in an exhibition game in France. Vince Carter had to leave early with injurying his hamstring...Derek Rose scored 10 points as the Bulls fell to the Mavs, 110-102...The Dallas Independent School District is looking into whether Darrell Arthur received improper grade changes while attending South Oak Cliff High School. Arthur is now a member of the Memphis Grizzles.

College Football: #21 Wake Forest held strong, beating Clemson, 12-7...USC QB Mark Sanchez looks like he's on track to start against Arizona State...Assistant coach Steve Ensiminger has been tapped to run Auburn's offense for the remainder of the season after the University fired offensive coordinator Tony Franklin...Georgia has dismissed safety Donavon Baldwin and redshirt freshman WR Walter Hill after the pair failed to live up to Georgia's standards.

Football: The Browns tight end Kellen Winslow was sent to a doctor after he missed his second straight practice with an unspecified "illness". Thanks to House I have some many scenarios running around in my head, none of which I believe are true...Redskins DE Jason Taylor attended his first practice since undergoing emergency calf surgery...Despite his most recent run-in, Adam (nee Pacman) Jones will play for the Cowboys on Sunday...Travis Henry is out of jail after posting a $400,000 bond. I wouldn't get too used to that freedom, better spread that seed while you still can.

Hockey: The NHL season got underway in the US as the Detroit Red Wings raised their Stanley Cup banner and then lost to the Maple Leafs, 3-2...It was a high scoring game as the Bruins edged the Avalanche, 5-4...Alex Burrows nets two, while Roberto Luongo kept the Flames scoreless in the Canucks 6-0 win...The Sharks handed the Ducks a 4-1 loss in San Jose Head Coach Todd McLellan's debut...Brain Leetch, Mike Richter, Brett Hull and Cammi Granato were honored before the Avalanche's home game on Thursday. The foresome will be inducted in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame on Friday...Sean Avery is bringing a new style to the Stars and apparently they are not talking about his fashion sense. Thank goodness, because even I'm getting a little bored with that story...Ouch! Former NHL goalie Clint Malarchuk accidently shot himself with a .22-caliber riffle.

Nascar: With qualifying rained out Jimmie Johnson will take the pole for Saturday's cup race at Lowe's Motor Speedway, a place where the two time defending Cup Champ has practically owned since joining the Series. But this track has also been kind to the likes of Tony Stewart, who finally snapped his winless streak at Talladega last weekend. Can he go back to back or will someone else take the checker flag? You'll have to tune into ABC at 7 PM/est on SATURDAY to catch the Bank of America 500...Scott Speed is ready to make waves in the Cup Series...Ticket sales at ISC tracks were down 10% this summer.

Best of the Rest: Former track star Tim Montgomery will be sentenced on Friday for his heroin conviction. He faces a minimum of five years and a fine of up to $2 million...Evander Holyfield has been offered a chance to return to the ring.

Check this out: "The Starter Wife" comes back to USA tonight at 9 PM/est. If you missed the six part mini-series the first time around you can catch up here. I will admit, I didn't watch it the first time it aired but I caught up during a marathon over of the summer and absolutely loved it.
