News Around the Majors

Smoltz Cut
After a disastrous outing against the Yankees on Thursday, the Red Sox have designated veteran pitcher John Smoltz for assignment. Smoltz was 2-5 with an 8.33 ERA in eight games with the Sox.

Giambi out in Oakland
Jason Giambi’s reunion with the A’s has come to an abrupt close. The 38-year old slugger has struggled mightily in 83 games with Oakland amassing only 11 homeruns and 40 RBIs with a paltry .193 batting average.

Twins Acquire Carl Pavano
In a continued fire sale, the Indians have traded Carl Pavano to the Twins for a player to be named later. The righty has been brilliant against the AL Central this year, including a 5-1 record against the White Sox and Tigers. Which is a good thing considering of the 54 games remaining this season, Minnesota will play 37 games against division rivals.

Rios out of Toronto?
According to ESPN, a team has placed a claim on Blue Jays right fielder Alex Rios. The Blue Jays now must decide whether to trade Rios to the team that placed the claim, pull him off waivers and keep him on their roster for the remainder of the season, or allow the team that placed the claim to take him without a trade. Rios is in the first year of a seven year, $69.35 million contract.
