Trade Deadline Wrap Up

By 4 PM there were rumblings that the Marlins-Red Sox-Pirates trade was dead in the water and that a last ditch effort was made by the Red Sox, Pirates and Dodgers but no details were released and everything seemed a bit fuzzy. A few hours later and the dust had settled, Manny was out of Boston, the Pirates had traded Jason Bay to Boston and both Boston and Los Angeles had sent two prospects to the Pirates. Overall, the Red Sox have probably weakened their talent pool with the loss of Ramirez, but the situation must have been pretty bad for them to ship him west. The Dodgers have obviously bettered their team as they make a push for the NL west crown and the Pirates have reunited the LaRoches (Andy and Adam).

Ken Griffey, Jr. to the White Sox
The other big deal--to me--came out of left field. As I turned on my computer yesterday morning I learned that Ken Griffey, Jr. had been traded to the White Sox upon approval by Griffey. By the end of the day it was clear, he was out of Cincinnati and into the thick of the AL Central playoff hunt and all the White Sox had to give up was Right-handed reliever Nick Masset and Minor League second baseman Danny Richar. An upgrade for Griffey, but was this a real upgrade for the White Sox?

The Marlins made a move to sure up their bullpen by bringing over Mariners reliever Arthur Rhodes for prospect Gaby Hernandez. Not the blockbuster deal Florida fans were hoping for, but a move all the same.
