Hurricane keeps St. John’s grounded

Ironically, Hurricane Gustav has put a crank in the Red Storm’s plans to travel to Cancun for the Labor Day weekend. Just a tragedy I know. The St. John’s men’s basketball team had actually planned to play two games against international teams between trips to the beach, the local bars and most likely the local jail. You know someone was going to have a date with the popo.

The cancellation was a disappointment for everybody.
“We were looking forward to the trip to Cancun, but with the severe weather in the area we decided it best to keep our team and student-athletes out of potential harm’s way,” St. John’s coach Norm Roberts said.
Gustav has wrecked havoc upon the Caribbean, killing at least 68 people in its path and causing millions of dollars worth of damage. The Hurricane is expected to make landfall in New Orleans next week.

While St. John’s will not reschedule this trip, they do plan to schedule an international excursion for the 2009-10 season. If they play abroad next year, it would be the first international tour for the school since coach Lou Carnesecca took the team to Spain in 1991.
