Opening Ceremonies

Baseball Update:
Even though the non-waiver deadline has come and gone, teams are still working on strengthning their core. The Red Sox have placed a claim on Padres outfielder Brian Giles and now working on a deal with San Deigo to bring him east. Meanwhile, the Rays have acquired reliever Chad Bradford from the Orioles, the Rockies picked up Livan Hernandez and the Phillies have picked up Scott Eyre from the Cubs.

Speaking of the Phils, they were shut out by the Marlins, 3-0. Cole Hamels is now winless in his last six starts.

Division rivals the Mets got a boost from star third baseman David Wright whose two run homer in the ninth handed New York a 5-3 win over the Padres. This was Wright's first career walk-off homerun.

Raul Ibanez hit a walk off liner into the seats in the Mariners 2-1 win over the Rays. It was the first walk-off homerun for Seattle this season.

Mike Mussina racked up his 15th win of the season with a seven inning shut out performance giving the Yankees a 3-0 win over the Rangers. The win tied Moose with the Indian's Cliff Lee for most wins in the AL. The Yankees placed starter Joba Chamberlain on the 15 day DL with rotator cuff tendinitis in his pitching shoulder and Carl Pavano made his third rehab start. After Mike Hampton's three starts, I'm beginning to think anything is possible.

The Rangers placed outfielder David Murphy on the DL with a sprained right knee.

Lastings Milledge had two homeruns in the second game of a doubleheader as the Nationals cruised to a 6-3 win. The win gave the Nats the doubleheader sweep. Earlier in the day, Washington placed Elijiah Dukes on the DL with a right calf strain and called up right-handed pitcher Garrett Mock from Triple-A Columbus.

It's getting bad for the A's who dropped their 10th straight game, 6-4. The win gave the Blue Jays the series sweep. The Jays also announced they're holding onto manager Cito Gaston for 2009.

The Tigers snapped a six game losing streak of their own with a 8-3 win over the White Sox. Miguel Cabrera and Curtis Granderson homered in the win. The ChiSox loss moved Minnesota just a half game back of first.

Clayton Kershaw's solid performance helped the Dodgers avoid being swept by the Cardinals as they went onto win, 4-1. Manny Ramirez added a homerun in the win. With the win and the Diamondbacks 6-4 loss to the Braves, LA is just a game and a half back.

Major League Baseball is reportedly looking into Manny Ramirez's exit from the Red Sox. Apparently continuously hearing the phrase "Manny being Manny" was not a good enough reason to send him packing.

More people maybe able to watch more baseball games if a blackout ban goes into effect in 2009.
Nascar Update:
It's the final road course event of the season for Nascar's top series. Watkins Glen can present quite a few problems for drivers as well as crew chiefs. Whether it's pit strategy, turning left and right or shifting, this track is like nothing else on the circuit. Watkins Glen also offers the perfect opportunity for drivers like Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart to finally break through, but as we've seen during the rest of the season, things don't always go as planned. Check out the Centurion Boats at the Glen at 1 PM/est on ESPN to see who ends up in victory lane.

Martin Truex, Jr. has re-signed with DEI to drive the #1 Chevy in 2009.

Brad Coleman will replace J.J. Yeley as driver of the #96 Toyota for Hall of Fame Racing. Bring back Tony Raines for 2009!

Popo in my crib News:
Skeletons are a bitch and former Nascar racing official Mauricia Grant is learning that the hard way. Turns out the woman who is suing Nascar for $225 million doesn't have the saint like past she may have lead some to believe she did. Currently an ex-boyfriend has a restraining order filed against her and she also has a DUI arrest on her record. Watch out Maurcia, because the popo are on your tail!

Former University of Toledo basketball player Sammy Villegas has been accused of shaving points in games during the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons. If convicted Villegas could face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Watch out Sammy, because the popo are on your tail!
