Eight is great

Braves Update:
The Braves went into their series with the Mets 2 1/2 games behind in the NL East after losing six of eight to the Washington Nationals and the Boston Red Sox last week. They were hoping to prove to their rivals, that they were the same team the Mets saw in April, when they took four of six games. On top of that, the Braves faced Jorge Sosa, a guy who just two seasons ago was 13-3 in a Braves uniform, but faltered mightily last season for them. Which Sosa would they see? And which Kyle Davies would show up? The Mets killer or the struggling Davies. The stage was set. Luckily for the Braves, it was the Sosa of last season that came out to pitch, allowing five runs in four innings including two in the second and third innings. Kyle Davies however pitched eight flawless innings and allowing only one run. In fact, he could have won the game all by himself, with that three run homerun in the sixth off of Sele. When all was said and done, the Braves came up with the win, 8-1. The Braves continue their series with the Mets at Turner Field when Chuck James takes the mound for the Braves and Oliver Perez for the Mets.

Games behind NY Mets in NL East: 1 1/2
Games above .500: 9
NL Wild Card Leader: Atlanta Braves

Braves Notes: After five starts, a 10.12 ERA, and a stint on the DL, the Braves released pitcher Mark Redman before Tuesday night's game. They called up Joey Devine to replace Redman on the 25 man roster...Congrats to 2B Kelly Johnson on his engagement!

Random Quote: "Every night, when Cole Hamels kneels beside his bed and says his prayers, he's interrupted by God, who breaks in and thanks himself for creating Cole Hamels.'' - Phillies pitcher Adam Eaton (espn.com) I don't know if I'd go that far.

NASCAR Update:
It was a relatively mild All-Star race last weekend at Lowe's Motor Speedway. The action was mostly limited to the Nextel Open, a qualifying race prior to the start of the Nextel All-Star race. With only the top two finishers transfering over, it seemed like a done deal for Carl Edwards, who paced a majority of the race. But in the waning laps, Edwards' car was just too tight and Martin Truex, Jr. and Johnny Sauter blew by him to pick up the transfer spots. Carl had to settle for pit road reporter during the big show.

Besides a crowd cheering crash between the brothers Busch (Kurt and Kyle), the All-Star race was very tame. There wasn't even much of a chase for the lead, as Kevin Harvick cruised to his first All-Star win.

My suggestions for next year, drop a segment and bring back elmination rounds. I miss the days when the last three guys got cut. I also miss the inversion. At least it brought some excitement to the final segment. Also what's up with the stop and go pit stop? Make them actually change four tires and add fuel and see which team is truly the best.

NASCAR Notes: There is apparently no room at the Hendrick Motorsports Inn for Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Owner, Rick Hendrick said he does not have any space for Junior, but has talked with him about supplying equipment (engines...) if Junior choses to run for his own team...DEI has withdrawn its appeal of the 100 point driver/owner penalty and Tony Eury, Jr.'s six race suspension, following the 8 cars failure of pre-race inspection at Darlington...NASCAR has decided to run the Car of Tomorrow exclusively during the 2008 season, one year earlier than originally planned.

Celebrity Tid Bits:
Even though I tried to vote for Joey Fatone (for like one whole minute, until I was over hearing the busy signal and gave up) it seems that my will was not enough for Joey to beat Apolo Ohno on "Dancing With the Stars." Seriously, now what am I going to watch over the summer?

In other TV news, don't forget to catch the season finale of "American Idol" tonight on Fox at 8 PM/est. Will it be Blake or Jordin? My votes for Jordin, but that's probably because her dad played for the New York Giants. It's called team allegiance!

Finally, after a nasty fall last week that left "The Office" star, Jenna Fisher (aka Pam Beesley) with a few broken bones in her back, the actress said she was on the mend and thanked her fans for all their well wishes. Don't worry, she should be back for the start of shooting of season four of "The Office." Get well soon!

It's been fun blogging with you,

Kate
