Keeping it Close

After allowing a passed ball that scored the go ahead run for the Milwaukee Brewers in the seventh inning, Brian McCann came back in the eighth inning with a double that scored three runs in the Atlanta Braves 9-3 win over the Brew Crew. Tim Hudson and Dave Bush had quite the pitchers duel going into the seventh with Hudson allowing just two runs and Bush allowing one. But it was Brewers relief pitching notably Derrick Turnbow that allowed the win to get away from the Brewers, who have now lost their last six series. The Braves get the day off before playing a three game series against the Chicago Cubs this weekend.

Games behind NY Mets in NL East: 4
Games above .500: 7
NL Wild Card Leader: Arizona Diamondbacks

Braves Notes: John Smoltz said he felt good during a game of catch on Wednesday. The 40 year old pitcher left the game early on Tuesday after tweaking his pinkie and shoulder. He should be able to make his next start...Rafael Soriano allowed just his second run in 16 innings, a solo shot by Prince Fielder in the eighth on Wednesday...Mike Gonzalez is scheduled to have Tommy John Surgery today. Mike will miss at least a year.

Giants Update:
Gee, haven't had one of these in a while. The Giants had an organized team practice on Wednesday and guess who were no-shows. Here's a hint, one loves America so much he wears it on his sleeve, literally and one can probably jump over the goal posts in the end zone without the aid of a trampoline. If you said Jeremy Shockey and Plaxico Buress, you'd be correct. They were joined with Michael Straham and Jim Finn on the did not report list. But about 84 other guys took time out of their busy lives to practice some football.

News & Notes: A photo of A-Rod and a whorish blonde was splashed across the New York Post on Wednesday. I'm not too sure his wife was super stoked with the pictures. It was a bad angle for Alex...The Minnesota Twins swept the Chicago White Sox after a 7-6 win on Wednesday. Both teams are fighting for a playoff spot in the tough AL Central...Si.com released the annual Fortunate 50, naming the top paid athletes in sports for 2006...ABC will broadcast the Scripts National Spelling Bee on Thursday starting at 8 PM/est. Let's hope nobody passes out from all the pressure...Finally, a Harry Porter theme park is in the works in where else, Orlando, FL. Kids will be able to "visit" Hogwarts starting in 2009. Take that Disney World!

There's a tear in my Miller Lite

Braves Update:
This scenario is beginning to look all too familiar for the Atlanta Braves. After a first inning homerun by Willie Harris, the Braves were up three-nothing and with John Smoltz on the mound, they looked poised to hand the Milwaukee Brewers their seventh straight loss. But a third inning homerun by Prince Fielder tied the game at 3 a piece and when the ninth came to a close the Braves had lost 5-4. Tim Hudson looks to turn the ship around this afternoon as the Braves close out their series against the Brewers at 1:05 PM/est on TBS.

Games behind NY Mets in NL East: 5
Games above .500: 6
NL Wild Card Leader: Arizona Diamondbacks

Braves Notes: Congratulations to Willie Harris on his first Atlanta Braves career homerun...John Smoltz left Tuesday's game early after "tweaking" his shoulder and reinjuring his pinky finger...Lance Cormier looked good in his final rehab start. He is expected to be called up for the June 5th doubleheader against the Marlins...MLB All-Star balloting numbers have been released and Brian McCann and Chipper Jones are the closest Braves to making the starting lineup. Both are second behind their Mets counterparts (Paul Lo Duca and David Wright). Edgar Renteria is in the fifth spot along with Andruw Jones and Jeff Francouer is in tenth. Don't forget to vote and vote often!

NASCAR Update:
Craftsman Truck Series driver Tyler Walker has been supspended indefintitely by NASCAR for violating the substance abuse policy. I see some one has been hanging out with Shane Hmiel.

With Dale Earnhardt, Jr. looking for a job and rumors of Ryan Newman moving on from Penske Racing South at the end of this season, J.J. Yeley has been told by Joe Gibbs Racing officials that his future at JGR is dependent on him. Yeley's 2nd place finish was a step in the right direction, but he'll have to show that he can consistently run up front like his teammates Tony Stewart and Denny Hamlin if he has any hopes of keeping his job.

Ray Evernham says he's about 60 to 90 days away from closing a deal to sell a potion of Evernham Motorsports to Montreal Canadiens owner George Gillett, Jr.

Popo in my Crib News:
Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss was arrested early Tuesday on suspicion of driving under the influence. Buss was seen driving his mercedes the wrong way on a California street. His 23 year old female passenger was not arrested. Watch out Jerry, because the popo are on your tail!

News & Notes: Josh Beckett picked up his eighth win of the season after making his first start for the Boston Red Sox off the DL...Tim Lincecum and Oliver Perez threw two gems of a game but in the end it was a Carlos Delgado homerun that won the game for the NY Mets in 12 innings over the San Francisco Giants...NFL players Union call the Pacman Jones ban a little excessive...Marquise Hill's death over the weekend has been ruled accidental. The Patriots' defensive end drowned following a jet ski accident on Sunday...A new website has popped up, asking vistors to sign a petition to fire "The View's" co-host Elizabeth Hasselbeck. It only took five years...

Braves Update:
It was the battle of the struggling teams as the Atlanta Braves took on the Milwaukee Brewers in Milwaukee yesterday. The Braves were desperate to get out of Atlanta after a weekend sweep by the Phillies, while the Brewers had lost five games in a row coming into the series. But a homerun by Andruw Jones in the fourth and an insurance run in the fifth was all the Braves needed to pick up the 2-1 win. The Brewers and Braves combined to leave 14 men on base during the game. The series continues tonight when John Smoltz takes on the Brewers' ace Ben Sheets at 8:05 PM/est on FSN.

Games behind NY Mets in NL East: 4
Games above .500: 7
NL Wild Card Leader: San Diego Padres/Los Angeles Dodgers

Braves Notes: Andruw Jones' fourth inning homer was his 350th career long ball...Chipper Jones is expected to miss the next two games against the Brewers and maybe heading to the DL with his injured thumbs...Congratulations to Salty on his first career homerun on Sunday against the Phillies' Cole Hammels

NASCAR Update:
I guess you could call the Coca-Cola 600 the tale of three races. The first was dominated by Penske Racing South's Kurt Busch and pole sitter Ryan Newman, but when the race was finished neither were on the track, as Newman exited early with engine troubles and Busch had an unpleasant meeting with the infield wall. The second act was lead by Toyota's Brian Vickers. Coming into the race, Toyota had only lead 15 laps, but Vickers easily surpassed that total, leading 76 laps. But, like his power steering, Vickers faded as the third race progressed, leaving a familiar team but an unfamiliar face in victory lane...Casey Mears. Mears who spent most of the night in the top ten, was able to save enough fuel to make it to the finish (not enough for burn outs, next time) and win his first ever Nextel Cup race. Congratulations Casey!
Race Results Points Standings

Random Quote: "I can't believe it...Wait a minute. Let me look around to make sure what it looks like." - Casey Mears in victory lane

Shout outs to: Brian Vickers for his stellar preformance, when that kid actually makes the races he puts on one heck of show and Kyle Petty for picking up third place.

Indy 500 Update:
Dario Franchitti did not let a little rain ruin his day, as he picked up his first ever Indy 500 win and a $1.6 million check. It was a soggy day in Indianapolis, rain fell before, during (which resulted in a three hour delay between laps 103 and 104) and after the checkers fell on lap 166. It was one of the most competitive races in recent history, without the usual suspects, Penske Racing and Ganassi Racing in contention for most of the day. Instead, Andretti Green Racing dominated. If the race had ended on lap 103, AGR would have had the top three spots (Tony Kanaan, Marco Andretti and Danica Patrick), instead, it was another AGR teammate that came away with the win, Franchitti. Ganassi's Scott Dixon came in second followed by Penske teammates Helio Castroneves and Sam Hornish, Jr. and Symantec Luczo Dragon Racing's Ryan Briscoe in fifth. The much talked about female drivers were lead by Danica Patrick who finished 8th, Sarah Fisher in 18th and Milka Duno in 31st, who exited early after a crash.
Race Results

We finally got a new computer over the weekend, yeah! All I need to do is have the verizon people over to connect the internet and I'll be back in business.

Braves Update:
For the third time this season, John Smoltz faced his old buddy, Tom Glavine and for the third time, the Braves won, but more importantly, it was Smoltzie's 200th career win. He becomes the first pitcher to ever get 200 career wins and 150 career saves. Glavine came up strong in six innings, allowing only five hits and two walks but it was Matt Diaz's solo homerun in the second inning that became the difference maker, in the Braves 2-1 win over the New York Mets. The Braves enter their series against the Philadelphia Phillies hoping to capitalize on their momentum, which will be important with the 2006 NL MVP, Ryan Howard returning to the Phils' bench tonight. Tim Hudson will go up against one of the few people in baseball that make John Smoltz look like a kid, Jamie Moyer. Coverage starts at 7:35 on SS.

Random Quote: "This one, the script couldn't have been written any better." - Chipper Jones on John Smoltz's 200th win (atlantabraves.com)

Games behind NY Mets in NL East: 1 1/2
Games above .500: 9
NL Wild Card Leader: Atlanta Braves

Braves Notes: Chipper Jones will miss at least Friday night's game against the Phillies after receiving a cortisone shot in his right hand on Wednesday night. Jones injured his hand in a brutal collision with Jose Bautista on May 11th...Lance Cormier may be off the DL soon if he completes his final rehab start with the Richmond Braves on Monday without discomfort.

NASCAR Update:
This weekend the boys stay close to home, competing at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, NC. The Coca-Cola 600, is the longest race of the year and one of NASCAR's crowned jewels. Look for Jimmie Johnson to be strong at "his house." Tony Stewart, Kasey Kahne and Carl Edwards will be in the hunt for the win, as well. Coverage starts on Sunday at 5 PM/est on FOX.
Check out the lineup here

NASCAR Notes: Mark Martin is ready to fill in for Jeff Gordon, if Gordon has to miss a race to see the birth of his daughter. Gordon's wife, Ingrid is scheduled to give birth the week of June 24th (Sonoma)...1988 Cup Champion, Bill Elliott will be behind the wheel for the #21 Wood Brothers Ford at Lowe's this weekend. The 21 car is 39th in points and not guaranteed a spot. Elliott would be eligible for the Champions provisonal.

IRL
Don't forget to check out the 91st running of the Indy 500. This years race marks the first time three females will be in the starting grid. Can Sarah Fisher, Danica Patrick or Milka Duno become the first women ever to win? Will American Sam Hornish, Jr. repeat or will it be one of the Ganassi Boys? (Let's go Danny Wheldon and Scott Dixon!) Does Andretti Green still have the magic? All of these questions will be answered when one person gets a chance to drink the milk in victory lane. Coverage starts live on Sunday at Noon/est on ABC.

Celebrity Tid Bits:
The Third installment of the Pirates series is set to debut at a theater near you this weekend. But if that's not your thing, you can check out Ashley Judd's latest, Bug.

You can't fool the popo

Braves Update:
You win some, you lose some and Braves lost one to the New York Mets last night. The Braves went up against the only Mets pitcher to notch a win against them (actually two), Oliver Perez and he certainly came through for the Mutts, pitching seven scoreless innings in their 3-0 win over the Bravos. While Chuck James came out early, the Brave's stellar relief staff tossed five and one third scoreless innings, but unfortunately, the bats weren't able to pitch in. The Braves will finish off their series with the Mets when John Smoltz faces buddy Tommy Glavine for his 200th win. Coverage starts at 7:30 PM/est on TBS.

Games behind NY Mets in NL East: 2 1/2
Games above .500: 8
NL Wild Card Leader: Atlanta Braves

Braves Notes: Mike Gonzalez went for his third MRI on his left elbow on Wednesday. Results from an MRI taken last Thursday were inconclusive. Gonzo showed no signs of discomfort during light throwing on Tuesday.

NASCAR Update:
Well, it didn't take long for Matt Borland to find a job. Less than a month after resigning from Michael Waltrip Racing, Borland was named competition director at Haas-CNC Racing. Borland recorded 12 wins, 54 top fives and 83 top tens in 188 starts as crew chief for Ryan Newman at Penske Racing...In other corporate news, Greg Biffle's former crew chief, Pat Tryson is leaving Roush Fenway Racing. No word on where Tryson will be heading...Apparently it's the fact that its an odd year to blame for Kasey Kahne's disastrous 2007. Kahne had a stellar rookie season in 2004 finishing 13th, but in 2005, even though Kahne won his first race, he still finished 23rd. Last year (2006), Kahne made the chase and fished 8th but this year, Kasey is mirred back in the 30s . Here's to 2008!

Popo in my Crib News:
It's been a while since I've done this but there were a few college students making some headlines...Former Montana State University football player, Rick Gatewood and his brother were apparently engaging in some extra curricular activity. The two allegedly were apart of a cocaine ring that trafficed pounds of drugs to Bozeman. This is believed to be connected to a 2006 killing of drug dealer Jason Wright, who was allegedly kidnapped and then killed six days later by two MSU students, basketball player Branden Miller and redshirt football player John Lebrum. I guess when there's nothing to do, traffic cocaine? Seriously! Watch out Rick & co because the popo are on your tail!

Meanwhile, LSU back up quarterback, Ryan Perrilloux was suspended from the football team indefinitely after he tried to use his older brother's ID to gain access onto a riverboat casino in Baton Rouge. The 20 year old was issued a misdemeanor summons for one count of misrepresentation to gain access and was released. Watch out Ryan, because the popo are on your tail!

Celebrity Tid Bits:
Congratulations to Jordin Sparks, you're newest American Idol.

Hopefully you didn't eat yet, because this story made me throw up a little bit. According to US Weekly, Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt from "The Hills" are engaged. I guess we'll find out this summer when the "The Hills" comes back for a third season.

Finally, catch Gary Allan on "Oprah" today (Thursday). He'll be discussing signs of depression, and the 2004 suicide of his wife Angela. Check local listings for air times.

Eight is great

Braves Update:
The Braves went into their series with the Mets 2 1/2 games behind in the NL East after losing six of eight to the Washington Nationals and the Boston Red Sox last week. They were hoping to prove to their rivals, that they were the same team the Mets saw in April, when they took four of six games. On top of that, the Braves faced Jorge Sosa, a guy who just two seasons ago was 13-3 in a Braves uniform, but faltered mightily last season for them. Which Sosa would they see? And which Kyle Davies would show up? The Mets killer or the struggling Davies. The stage was set. Luckily for the Braves, it was the Sosa of last season that came out to pitch, allowing five runs in four innings including two in the second and third innings. Kyle Davies however pitched eight flawless innings and allowing only one run. In fact, he could have won the game all by himself, with that three run homerun in the sixth off of Sele. When all was said and done, the Braves came up with the win, 8-1. The Braves continue their series with the Mets at Turner Field when Chuck James takes the mound for the Braves and Oliver Perez for the Mets.

Games behind NY Mets in NL East: 1 1/2
Games above .500: 9
NL Wild Card Leader: Atlanta Braves

Braves Notes: After five starts, a 10.12 ERA, and a stint on the DL, the Braves released pitcher Mark Redman before Tuesday night's game. They called up Joey Devine to replace Redman on the 25 man roster...Congrats to 2B Kelly Johnson on his engagement!

Random Quote: "Every night, when Cole Hamels kneels beside his bed and says his prayers, he's interrupted by God, who breaks in and thanks himself for creating Cole Hamels.'' - Phillies pitcher Adam Eaton (espn.com) I don't know if I'd go that far.

NASCAR Update:
It was a relatively mild All-Star race last weekend at Lowe's Motor Speedway. The action was mostly limited to the Nextel Open, a qualifying race prior to the start of the Nextel All-Star race. With only the top two finishers transfering over, it seemed like a done deal for Carl Edwards, who paced a majority of the race. But in the waning laps, Edwards' car was just too tight and Martin Truex, Jr. and Johnny Sauter blew by him to pick up the transfer spots. Carl had to settle for pit road reporter during the big show.

Besides a crowd cheering crash between the brothers Busch (Kurt and Kyle), the All-Star race was very tame. There wasn't even much of a chase for the lead, as Kevin Harvick cruised to his first All-Star win.

My suggestions for next year, drop a segment and bring back elmination rounds. I miss the days when the last three guys got cut. I also miss the inversion. At least it brought some excitement to the final segment. Also what's up with the stop and go pit stop? Make them actually change four tires and add fuel and see which team is truly the best.

NASCAR Notes: There is apparently no room at the Hendrick Motorsports Inn for Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Owner, Rick Hendrick said he does not have any space for Junior, but has talked with him about supplying equipment (engines...) if Junior choses to run for his own team...DEI has withdrawn its appeal of the 100 point driver/owner penalty and Tony Eury, Jr.'s six race suspension, following the 8 cars failure of pre-race inspection at Darlington...NASCAR has decided to run the Car of Tomorrow exclusively during the 2008 season, one year earlier than originally planned.

Celebrity Tid Bits:
Even though I tried to vote for Joey Fatone (for like one whole minute, until I was over hearing the busy signal and gave up) it seems that my will was not enough for Joey to beat Apolo Ohno on "Dancing With the Stars." Seriously, now what am I going to watch over the summer?

In other TV news, don't forget to catch the season finale of "American Idol" tonight on Fox at 8 PM/est. Will it be Blake or Jordin? My votes for Jordin, but that's probably because her dad played for the New York Giants. It's called team allegiance!

Finally, after a nasty fall last week that left "The Office" star, Jenna Fisher (aka Pam Beesley) with a few broken bones in her back, the actress said she was on the mend and thanked her fans for all their well wishes. Don't worry, she should be back for the start of shooting of season four of "The Office." Get well soon!

Braves Update:
It hasn't been a great few days for the Braves as they lost only their second series of the year. This time, it was to the Washington Nationals. I continue to wonder if the Nationals are the Braves achilles heel. While the Braves entered the Series a 1/2 game up on the New York Mets, they ended it 1 1/2 games back after yesterday afternoon's 5-4 loss. Hopefully, they can elevate their game, especially since they'll be playing the AL East leading Boston Red Sox. Action starts at 7:05 PM/est on TBS.

Games behind NY Mets in NL East:1 1/2
Games above .500: 9

Baseball Update:
Just in time, Red Sox ace, Josh Beckett is heading to the disabled list.

Former Braves pitcher, Kyle Farnsworth is not happy with Roger Clemens' "family plan" schedule. Apparently, the shaky relief pitcher doesn't the fact that Clemens does not have to stay with the team if he is not pitching.

NASCAR Update:
This weekend is a time to celebrate, have fun and kick some major ass, because after all, there are no points involved just money, lots and lots of money oh yeah and PRIDE! The Nextel Cup will be at their home track, Lowe's Motor Speedway in beautiful Concord, NC for the Nextel All Star Challenge. Coverage starts live on Speed at 9 PM/est on Saturday. Just one thing...well two things...actually...

I was super busy today, but I did want to mention two things:
1. Liberty Media's purchase of the Atlanta Braves was unanimously approved by baseball owners on Wednesday. The deal valued the franchise at $461 million. After announcing the approval, Bud Selig told reporters that Hank Aaron will have an increased role with the Braves.

2. The Braves have released 1B Craig Wilson. This was done to make room for rookie sensation, Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Wilson was batting just .172 with one homer and two RBIs in 24 games.

R.I.P. Veronica Mars. Eonline.com is reporting the CW has decided not to renew the series. So all those upset with Dawn Ostroff for cancelling "VM" and "Everwood" and replacing them with hit shows like "Runaway" and some reality show about a farmer, join me in my the official boycott of the CW!

The Day After

Braves Update:
So a few weeks ago I was reading an article on maybe espn.com saying that "the Braves were good, but that they weren't as good as you thought. And anyways, Tim Hudson will show his true colors. He's not as good as April made him out to be." After last night's game, I'm sure that "reporter" was eating his words. Going into the fifth inning, Hudson was flirting with a no-hitter. While he didn't get it, he did pitch seven amazing innings allowing one run off of three hits. Thanks to two Edgar Renteria homers (1st and 7th inning) the Braves were able to snap their two game losing streak with a 6-2 win over the Washington Nationals. Oh yeah and the Braves are that good! The Bravos take on the Nationals tonight at 7:05 PM/est on FSN.

Games ahead of NY Mets in NL East: 1/2
Games above .500: 11
NL Wild Card Leader: NY Mets

Braves Notes: Yesterday was John Smoltz's 40th birthday. MLB.com conducted a Q&A to reflect on his past 40 years...On Monday, Smoltzie dislocated his pinky finger. X-Rays were negative, and he may pitch Saturday's game against the Red Sox.

NASCAR Update:
They expected a penalty, but Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Tony Eury, Jr. weren't expecting it to be so severe. Earnhardt, Jr. was penalized 100 driver points, Teresa Earnhardt was penalized 100 owner points and Eury, Jr. was suspended six points races and fined $100,000 for an unapproved bolt on the rear wing of the #8 Budweiser Chevy found during pre-race inspection. DEI is expected to appeal, saying the punishment was too harsh. So if Dale, Jr. doesn't make the Chase becuase of the points penalty will they expand the Chase to 15 cars?

Last night was the Academy of Country Music Awards. Once again, Carrie Underwood was the big winner picking up three awards for Top Female Vocalist, Ablum of the Year for "Some Hearts" and Video of the Year for "Before He Cheats." Kenny Chesney walked away with Entertainer of the Year, while George Strait won Single and Song of the Year for "Give it Away." I also have to give shout outs to Miranda Lambert for winning Top New Female Vocalist of the Year. On Friday I'll be seeing two winners Rodney Atkings, Top New Male Vocalist of the Year and Little Big Town, Top New Duo or Vocal Group when they open for Martina McBride. Congratulations to all the winners.

Gilmore Girls

Last night was the final episode of my beloved "Gilmore Girls." I had to run upstairs after it ended so I wouldn't start crying in front of my mom. (I always make fun of her because she cries at anything, TV commercials, etc..) I thought it was a brillant end to a fantastic show. Even though show creator Amy Sherman-Palladino didn't write it, it felt like she did. It featured almost every important townsperson you could think of, Taylor, Babette, Miss Patty, Sookie, Jackson, Lulu and my favorite Kirk. It even had an "unofficial" town meeting. But the moment that really made me tear up was the final scene, a tribute to the pilot which had Lorelai and Rory sitting at a table in Luke's diner the morning of Rory's big move into the real world (well, actually Barack Obama's campaign bus). It was a perfect way to end GG, focused on its heart and soul, Lorelai and Rory...the Gilmore girls.

What?!?!?!?

So NBC announced its fall line-up and they will air "Friday Night Lights", on Fridays at 10PM. Seriously? Do you even know what age group your going for? Because anyone under 35 will be out at 10 PM/est. I get totally excited for a new season, and they throw it to the wolves. Why not just put it on at 9PM/est on Thursdays against "Grey's Anatomy" oh wait...that's where they put "The Office." I'm so mad at NBC. Why couldn't we put it after "Heroes?" It did pretty well in that time slot.

Do you sense a pattern?

The Braves began their series with the Pittsburgh Pirates this weekend, as well as you can winning both Friday and Saturday's games. But Sunday, didn't go quite like the other ones, as the Bucs took out their offensive frustration on the Braves in a 13-2 win. With the Mets taking 2 out of 3 in their series with the Milwaukee Brewers, the Braves remain only a 1/2 game in front of the Mets. One day before his 40th birthday, John Smotlz will take the mound against National's pitcher Jason Bergman tonight at 7:05 PM/est on SS.

Games ahead of NY Mets in NL East: .5
Games above .500: 11
NL Wild Card Leader: NY Mets

Braves notes: Star third baseman, Chipper Jones does not agree with the Braves super tough interleague schedule with features six games against the Boston Red Sox and a series against the Detroit Tigers, Minnesota Twins, and Cleveland Indains.

So I taped Saturday's Nextel Cup Race and when I went to watch it, I realized that there was a rain delay and the race was postponed to Sunday. So I only, got to watch the final 60 laps. But the ending of the race seemed pretty fimiliar with Jeff Gordon picking up his 3rd win in the last four races and his seventh at Darlington. Denny Hamlin made a charge at the end, after a late race pit stop put him mid-pack but it was not enough. Hamlin, who had lead the most laps of the race finished second.

Shout outs to Dale Earnhardt, Jr. After a very stressful week, the number 8 finished eighth.

Race Results Points Standings

Congratulations to Sheryl Crow. She adopted a two week old baby boy, who she named Wyatt after her father.

This weekend I checked out the latest Spiderman movie. Let's just say it's almost 3 hours long, it takes forever to get started and I fell asleep before it ended. So I'd say, if you haven't seen it yet, wait for it to come out on DVD.

Don't forget to watch the season finale of "How I Met Your Mother" tonight at 8PM/est on CBS!

Thank goodness!!!

(tvaddict.com)
"Friday Night Lights"is coming back for a second season. The critically acclaimed but ratings challenged drama about a small Texas town and their love of all things football had been on the bubble. At first NBC had only green-lit six scripts, hardly a full renewal, but a sign that the network had faith in the show. Something changed, (probably a bunch of crappy pilots) and NBC is expected to announce at upfronts next week, that "FNL" will be back! I'm so excited I can't even explain. After the departure of "Gilmore Girls" I didn't need any more dissappointments.

Don't say goodbye

The big news of the day centers around a thursday press conference. Dale Earnhardt, Jr. is expected to announce his departure from DEI after the end of the 2007 season. Junior has raced his entire Cup career at DEI, the company started by his father, Dale Earnhardt. Junior had set a May deadline to get a contract in place, but apparently, an agreement could not be reached. Junior is supposedly chosing between Chevy teams, Richard Childress Racing, the company his father raced for, and Hendrick Motorsports, agruably the most dominate team in NASCAR today. An announcement of where he is going is not expected to be made today.

Frienemies

Andruw Jones chose a great time to climb out of his slump. Jones single in the eight moving the go ahead run home and allowing the Braves to beat the San Diego Padres 3-2. Jones' RBI came after a one run triple by short stop Edgar Renteria in the same inning. The Braves have been on tear winning their last 7 out of 11. Tonight's game will feature a match up between two former teammates, John Smoltz and Greg Maddux. The last time these two met, was in 1992. Braves v. Padres starts at 7:35 PM/est on FSN-HD.

While many drivers have criticized the Car of Tomorrow, maybe no one's voice is louder than superstar Dale Earnhardt, Jr. During testing at Lowe's Motor Speedway, Junior told reporters that the cars were too hard to turn and are "the most frustrating thing [he's] ever had to deal with." Not good. On an upside for NASCAR, who has spent seven years developing the COT, most teams want the it in full rotation in 2008.

Last night I headed up to the bronx for another $5 game. The Yankees pretty much slaughtered the Texas Rangers 8-2 and A-Rod hit a homerun, his first in 15 games. More importantly, Andy Pettitte was on the mound. The April 25th game that got rained out was supposed to feature Pettitte. So I was glad that he started. By far the best line of the night came from the kids behind us who were making plans for the next day. "Ok, so we should leave at 2, but I'm going to have to shower first." Good call. Unfortunately, no pictures. I took a bunch, but my computer is still down for the count.

NASCAR Update:
It's short track racing at night for NASCAR this weekend, as they head to Richmond for the fourth Car of Tomorrow race this season. Denny Hamlin will be looking for his first win in his home state of Virginia, while other drivers like Casey Mears will be looking for good finishes to stay in the top 35 points. Coverage begins at 7 PM/est on Fox.

Random Quote: "I'm the poster child for doing stupid things in NASCAR." - Tony Stewart (foxsports)

NASCAR Notes: Matt Borland is out as the crew chief for Dale Jarrett's #44 UPS Toyota at MWR...Scott Wimmer sued Bill Davis Racing for $1.2 million in unpaid salary in 2006. Wimmer is alledging that Bill Davis did not follow the correct procedure when they fired him. ..Richard Petty will meet with Queen Elizabeth II at the Kentucky Derby before heading over to Richmond for the Nextel Cup race on Saturday. (thanks Howard)

Celebrity Tid Bits
I think I am seriously going to cry...yesterday it was announced that "Gilmore Girls" will not come back for a 8th season. The series finale will air on May 15th on the CW. Seriously, after they air the final episode, I will no longer be watching the CW. (You can't get rid of "Everwood" in favor of "7th Heaven" and then cancel "GG" without reprecussions!)

This weekend in theaters is the third installment of the Spiderman Movies, Spiderman 3. The movie is receiving mixed reviews. Also in theaters, Drew Barrymore's latest, Lucky You and Keri Russell's Waitress, which garnered a lot of buzz at Sundance where is premiered last winter.

Don't forget to catch an all new episode of "Brothers & Sisters" at 10 PM/est on ABC on Sunday.

Welcome to the Bigs

Oh and happy birthday. It's safe to say that Jarrod Saltalamacchia's 22nd birthday is one to remember. Salty got the call up to the bigs to play for the injured Brian McCann and Bryan Pena at midnight...May 2nd. Less than 24 hours later, he threw out the first base runner that tried to steal. And to top it off, the Braves won 4-3 on the strength of a Chipper Jones 2 run double and Willie Harris' game winning single in the sixth, to take the 3 game series against the Philadelphia Phillies. The Braves have the day off.

Games ahead of New York Mets in NL East: 1/2
Games above .500: 7
Wild Card Leader: New York Mets

Braves notes: Mark Redman was placed on the 15 day DL with an ingrown toe nail...With his debut, Jarrod Saltalamacchia made the record books with the longest name (14 letters) in MLB history.

Josh Beckett became the first major league pitcher to six wins this season, as the Red Sox beat the Oakland A's, 6-4. Beckett is the first Red Sox to win his first six games since Roger Clemens did it in 1991.

Kevin Harvick and Jamie McMurray were fined $25,000 each and placed on probation until October 3rd because of their actions during last Sunday's race in Talladega. Officials reviewing the race noticed Harvick and McMurray bumping cars during a late caution.

Congratulations to the Portland Trail Blazers, Brandon Roy who was named Rookie fo the Year.

Omigod, Omigod You Guys!

Chipper Jones remained red hot, hitting two homers during Tuesday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies, but it was not enough as the Braves fell 6-4. After only one and two thirds innings, starter, Mark Redman was pulled from the game, giving up four runs and wasting the Braves early 3 run lead. After five starts, Redman has become a liablity and the Braves maybe looking for a new back end starter. The Braves finish off their series with the Phillies tonight at 7:35 PM/est on ESPN/FSN. Chuck James (3-2) will face the Phils Freddy Garcia (1-1).

Games ahead of New York Mets in the NL East: 1/2

Braves Notes: Tuesday's game may prove costly for the Braves. During the second inning, catcher Brian McCann was hit in the glove by a Rod Barajas swing. McCann had originally injured his left ring finger after being hit by a pitch. McCann was visably in pain and had to leave the game because he was unable to catch Mark Redman's pitches. By the end of the game, back-up catcher Bryan Pena was dizzie after being hit in the helmet by Greg Dobb's back swing. The two catchers are questionable for Wednesday's game against the Phillies. If needed, the Braves will call up catcher Corky Miller from triple-A Richmond.

Note to would be game/race interferers, just don't do it. 14 people have been banned from Talladega for life after being caught throwing debris onto the track after Jeff Gordon's win. A New York Mets fan was banned from Shea Stadium for three years after shining a flashlight onto the field to distract two Braves players during an April 20th game. Frank Martinez will also spend 15 days in jail. Watch out guys because the popo are on your tail!

Last week I saw Legally Blonde the Musical on Broadway. I for one, am not easy to impress, but this Musical was genuinely fun. It never took itself too seriously and really honored the film version. (More so than say Legally Blonde 2) The music was cheeky, the acting on target and the staging was great. If you're looking for a light hearted play, check this one out. To see a preview of Legally Blonde and interview with its star, Laura Bell Bundy click here. You can buy tickets here.

Going, going, gone

courtesy of atlantabraves.com

Andruw Jones hit a monster walk-off homerun to win the game for the Braves, 5-2 on Monday night. Only one day after Tim Hudson received the news that his grandmother, Vera and friend, Josh Hancock had died on Sunday, Hudson pitched eight stellar innings but left the game in 2-2 tie with the Philadelphia Phillies. But leave it to the Braves all-star center fielder, Andruw to win the game in the ninth. Jones, who is in the final year of his contract with the Braves, is proving why he gets paid the big bucks. With the win and the Mets 9-6 loss to the Marlins, the Braves move into first place in the NL East. Tonight the Braves continue their series with the Phillies at 7:35 PM/est on FSN. Mark Redman (0-3) will start against Phillies phenom, Cole Hamels (2-1).

Braves Notes: Braves closer Bob Wickman was placed on the 15 day DL with back soreness.

One day after losing pitcher Josh Hancock, the St. Louis Cardinals took the field at Miller Park in Milwaukee. The Cardinals lost 7-1.

Kyle Busch's hans device cracked when Busch was hit from behind, causing his car to flip multiple times during the Busch Series race at Talladega.

Don't forget to pick up Miranda Lambert's latest album, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend in stores today! click here for a preview.

Also check out Miranda's boyfriend, Blake Shelton's latest, Pure BS which is in stores today!

Happy birthday shout outs to Tim McGraw who turns 40 today.
