Time to Shine



Baseball: The Cubs took over first place in the Central after downing the Reds, 5-2...The Cardinals were pounded by the Phillies, 9-2 to fall into second...Pedro Martinez's first rehab start was limited by rain...And in case you just can't wait for Martinez to make his first major league start with the Phillies, you can click here to buy his Phillies t-shirt...Justin Morneau smacked two homers as the Twins ran over the Angels, 10-1...The Yankees topped the A's, 7-5...And also placed outfielder Brett Gardner on the DL...The Orioles broke an 11 game losing streak at Fenway thanks in part to a terrible start by John Smoltz, 6-2...The Blue Jays beat the Rays, 5-1...This trading Roy Halladay thing is not as easy as it may seem...The Indians swept the Mariners, 12-3...Seattle placed Erik Bedard on the DL. Like that's ever a shocker...The battle for the NL Wild Card is heating up with the Braves hitting up the Brewers, 10-2...And the Rockies doubling up the Giants, 4-2...Congratulations to Rickey Henderson and Jim Rice on being inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame...Noticably absent from the festivities was Tony Gwynn who is reportedly recovering from gastric surgery...Hall of Famer Hank Aaron wants an asterisk next to known steriod users' names if they are inducted into the HOF...But would he want one next to Pete Rose's name if he ever gets reinstated and then voted into the Hall?

Basketball: Swin Cash set a WNBA All-Star game scoring record of 22 points as the West beat the East 130-118.

Football: Looks like Plaxico Burress is going to jail one way or another...Terrell Owens thinks Michael Vick has suffered enough, Commissioner Goodell...2 days after signing with the Ravens, Drew Bennett has announced his retirement.

Hockey: The Bruins have signed defenseman Derek Morris to a one year contract...They also traded Aaron Ward to the Hurricanes for Patrick Eaves and a fourth round pick...Jerry Reinsdorf has submitted a formal bid for the Phoenix Coyotes.

Nascar: A late speeding penalty levied against Juan Pablo Montoya opened the door for Jimmie Johnson to steal the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard...Click here for full results...And here for updated standings...Needless to say Juan Pablo is not very happy with Nascar right now...Fans are raising money to help send Kenny Wallace to the Nationwide road race in Montreal on August 30th...I think it's safe to say Danica Patrick won't be racing for Chip Ganassi in Nascar anytime soon.


Best of the Rest: Congrats to Alberto Contador on winning the Tour de France. Lance Armstrong finished third...The US was drilled by Mexico, 5-0 in the Gold Cup...Congrats to Will Power on winning this weekend's IndyCar race in Edmonton...Get well wishes go out to Tony Kanaan who was burned in a pit fire during the IndyCar race...Good news, following a scary qualifying crash, doctors believe F1 driver Felipe Massa's life is no longer in danger. He remains hospitalized...The US team, lead by Michael Phelps won the 400-meter freestyle relay at the FINA World Swimming Championship...Congrats to Brett Simpson who defeated Mick Fanning to win the Hurley U.S. Open of Surfing...Sad News, former boxing champ Vernon Forrest was shot and killed in an apparent robbery.
