1000!!!!

This marks my 1000th post and I am so glad Nascar/Pepsi went ahead and celebrated it for me with their Pepsi 500 party sponsored by Radar last night. Of course, I wasn’t exactly invited and it was all the way over in LA, but drivers like Jeff Gordon and Carl Edwards stopped by. Plus J.Wahl, Heidi and Spencer of The Hills and that girl that won Dancing with the Stars the first season attended. But it wasn’t all d-list. The cute guy from House (Jesse Spencer) came out as well as Aaron Eckhart and Pharrell (who hosted the event along with Gordon). And fine, maybe the party was exactly held in my honor, maybe it was more to celebrate this weekend’s Pepsi 500 at Fontana. But if means more celeb spottings around the track, I’m all for it. Click here for pictures from the event. And here for video.

And with that, I say, enjoy your holiday weekend, make sure to check out Gossip Girl on Monday and I'll be back on Tuesday! (Sorry, no Friday Funnies this week)

Rampage Jackson is Crazy according to his lawyer

Former mixed martial arts champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson was apparently bit off when he led the popo on a chase in July, striking several cars in the process. His lawyer, Carol Lavacot describes the days prior to Rampage’s…well…rampage as out of the ordinary. She claims that Mr. Jackson was being betrayed by a close friend (name unknown but may or may not go by the name of Lucifer), which caused him to stay up for three consecutive days, using energy drinks to keep him awake. During this time, he believed that if he fell asleep he would die.

Rampage was then on his way to his friend’s (again name unknown but may or may not go by the name as Mother Theresa) house when the chase began. Jackson felt it best to evade the popo because he thought getting to said friend’s house was a matter of life or death. Following his arrest, Jackson spent five days in the loony bin where doctors discovered he had suffered a “brief reactive psychosis” due to lack of sleep, stress and dehydration.

Ms. Lavacot says her client takes full responsibility for what he has done, but has plead not guilty to felony counts of evading the popo, evading the popo against traffic and misdemeanor hit-and-run on account he was crazy. He is now free on $25,000 bail and if you surf over to tmz.com, I’m sure you can find of video or pictures of what he’s doing now. Watch out Rampage, because the popo are on your tail!

Hurricane keeps St. John’s grounded

Ironically, Hurricane Gustav has put a crank in the Red Storm’s plans to travel to Cancun for the Labor Day weekend. Just a tragedy I know. The St. John’s men’s basketball team had actually planned to play two games against international teams between trips to the beach, the local bars and most likely the local jail. You know someone was going to have a date with the popo.

The cancellation was a disappointment for everybody.
“We were looking forward to the trip to Cancun, but with the severe weather in the area we decided it best to keep our team and student-athletes out of potential harm’s way,” St. John’s coach Norm Roberts said.
Gustav has wrecked havoc upon the Caribbean, killing at least 68 people in its path and causing millions of dollars worth of damage. The Hurricane is expected to make landfall in New Orleans next week.

While St. John’s will not reschedule this trip, they do plan to schedule an international excursion for the 2009-10 season. If they play abroad next year, it would be the first international tour for the school since coach Lou Carnesecca took the team to Spain in 1991.

Baseball Update:
Jason Giambi knows when to turn it on, blasting a game tying homerun in the seventh and then a game winning single in the ninth to help the Yankees avoid a three game sweep by the Red Sox with their 3-2 win. New York also received some good news, pitcher Joba Chamberlain is hoping to come off the DL by next week. He would however be returning to the bullpen and not the starting rotation.

The Red Sox on the other hand, will be sending their ace Josh Beckett to see Dr. James Andrews about his right elbow. Beckett was scheduled to pitch on Friday, but has since been scratched. Everytime I hear the name Dr. James Andrews I hear that music that plays in the background of horror movies when the bad guy [insert name here] enters a scene.

With Thursday's 3-2 win over the Blue Jays, the Rays are guaranteed their first non-losing season in franchise history.

Aramis Ramirez hit a grand slam in the eighth inning for the Cubs, which helped them rally past the Phillies, 6-4. The Phils now sit a game behind the Mets as they continue their series in Wrigley.

Foxsports.com is reporting the Phillies have acquired Matt Stairs from the Blue Jays for a unnamed prospect.

Florida's postseason hopes are slipping away after losing to the Braves, 4-2. The Marlins are just 10-15 in the month of August and sit 6 games behind the Mets in the NL East. Meanwhile, can I just give a shout-out to Charlie Morton who pitched six great innings, allowing just two runs and to Brian McCann, whose three run homer in the fifth ended winning the game for Atlanta.

The Braves reliever Rafael Soriano had season ending elbow surgery on Thursday. He is expected to be ready by spring training.

It's not a good sign when you get swept by the Nats, so while I'm not ready to conceed the West to the Diamondbacks, the Dodgers certianly aren't making much of case for themselves falling to Washington, 11-2. Cristian Guzman completed the cycle in the win. LA sent pitcher Clayton Kershaw down to Triple-A Las Vegas following Thursday night's loss. He allowed five runs in that game.

The Nationals have shut down right hander Shawn Hill for the remainder of the season after experiencing swelling in his right elbow.

The A's have proven to be quite a thorn in some of the American League's best teams' sides. Kurt Suzuki doubled in the winning run in Oakland's 3-2 win over the Twins to give them two straight wins (a big thing in Oakland) and three wins in the past four games. Their other victim, the Los Angeles Angels, who just dropped a series to the A's this week.

The Angeles rebounded from their loss on Wednesday with a come-from-behind win over the Rangers. Pinch hitter Juan Rivera hit a three run double that started a five run eighth, which proved to be the difference in their 7-5 win.

The Angels placed Howie Kendrick on the DL with a strained left hamstring.

Nascar Update:
While people may wish they could all be California girls, many race fans are glad not all tracks are like Fontana. Despite the fact that the track boasts sweeping turns and multi-groove lanes along its flat 2 mile track, the racing is usually less than spectacular. The once mighty Southern 500 raced at Darlington on this weekend is long gone, but its absence does not mean this race is unimportant. With only two races to go until the beginning of the Chase, drivers will racing as hard as they can to get one of the 12 lucky spots. So who will land in Victory Lane at the Pepsi 500? You'll have to watch ESPN beginning at 8 PM/est to find out.

Look back at this year's freshman class of Nascar Cup drivers here. You could almost do a where are they now with some of them.

Wheaties gets two gold medal faces on the front of their cereal boxes

It may not have been good enough for golden boy Michael Phelps, but Nastia Liukin is happy to have her face on a box of Wheaties. The Olympic gymnast all-around champ will be joined by Olympic decathlon gold-medalist Bryan Clay. Phelps, for his part reportedly snubbed the famous cereal brand and is instead going to be on boxes of Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes and Corn Flakes in September. Don't worry Michael, I'd take the big bucks too!

Pacman is on the loose

According to ESPN.com, the NFL has reinstated multiple arrestee Adam “Pacman” Jones in time for the Dallas Cowboys season opener against the Cleveland Browns. Jones had been suspended by the league for his continued violations of local, state and federal laws, which I blame partly on his addiction to strip clubs. I understand, Adam, I have similar problem with Starbucks. Of course the popo never have to cuff me and escort me out of the coffee chain, but I get it. Since he was drafted in 2005, Pacman has been arrested six times and involved in 12 incidents requiring the popo. Crap, Michael Vick must be so pissed he’s locked up at Leavenworth while Jones is parading around a free man. That’s right Michael, next time just be involved in shooting people at a strip club, not dogs in your backyard.

Jones had received a partial reinstatement by the League in June, which allowed him to attend training camp and participate in preseason games. He then wrote a letter to Commissioner Roger Goodell in August requesting his full reinstatement. I was hoping it was handwritten and littered with spelling errors, but a co-worker informed me it was actually typed.

Upon hearing about his formal reinstatement, Pacman had this to say:

"It feels good man, you know, to get a second chance and I just have to take advantage of it," Jones told The Dallas Morning News. "First and foremost, I don't want to let myself down, definitely my little girl down. I'm thankful for Jerry [Jones], the fans in Dallas and my teammates for believing in me. I need to keep doing what I've been doing to get reinstated, staying with myself and my teammates and staying away from those knuckleheads and just stay focused."
He has a kid, really? That doesn’t seem like a good idea. Anyway, watch out Pacman, because the popo will always be on your tail!

Jaguars WR is invovled in one hot mess

Sharri Henry has filed a lawsuit claiming that her baby daddy (Ms. Henry is about four months along in her pregnancy) Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Dennis Northcutt paid his cousin to beat her up. Even Amy Fisher had the guts to shoot Mary Jo Buttafuoco in person. Ms. Henry claims the event happened at a Hollywood restaurant on May 17th. The lawsuit fails to name the cousin who did the beating.

Hmm, let me think about this. Any good thug would know it’s best not to do your dirty deed in a crowded Hollywood hotspot. And she’s claiming the nine year NFL veteran was “trying to harm her unborn child” which he apparently wanted her to get rid of. But if the reports of her being only four months pregnant are true, she'd barely even be a few weeks along. Seems kind of odd to me. Plus why isn’t this mysterious cousin mentioned in this case? Is it because his pockets aren't fully lined with 100 dollar bills?

Mr. Northcutt’s sports agent Jerome Stanley contacted tmz.com and basically said bitch is crazy and she don’t know what she’s talking about. The statement was countered by Ms. Henry’s lawyer Loyst P. Fletcher that painted quite a different scenario. Plus they have some photographic evidence of Ms. Henry’s “bloody mess.” So let’s do what every good American does and start judging these crazy kids!

Either way, they both better watch out, because the popo are on your tail!

Back, back, forth and forth

Baseball Update:
The Phillies rallied on Tuesday to nip the Mets, 8-7, however on Wednesday, it was the Mets that were able to get to Philadelphia's bullpen late in their 6-3 victory. Daniel Murphy hit a tiebreaking double in the eight after Carlos Delgado had tied the game with a two run homer. The win gave the Mets back a half game advantage.

Back in New York, the Yankees were severely injuring their playoff hopes with a 11-3 defeat. The Red Sox broke the game open in their seven run eighth inning, which included a grand slam by Dustin Pedroia.

The Rays notched their 80th win of the season thanks to a 1-0 nail bitter over the Blue Jays. Carlos Pena's fourth inning solo shot was all the offense Tampa Bay needed as Matt Garza and two other relievers combined for nine scoreless innings in the win.

Carlos Villanueva may have jumped the gun a bit, celebrating after getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh inning. The gesture by the Brewers reliever was just the motivation the Cardinals needed as they rallied back in the eighth to pick up a 5-3 win.

The Cubs continued their winning ways against the Bucs completing a three game sweep with their 2-0 shut out.

The Pirates No. 2 overall pick, Pedro Alvarez refuses to sign his contract and has now been placed on the restricted list.

Apparently no one wants to carry the NL West crown into the playoffs. The Dodgers lost their sixth straight game after falling to the Nationals, 5-6, while the Padres completed a three game sweep of the Diamondbacks with thier victory. The D'Backs still hold a three game lead in the Division, but who knows, maybe the Rockies will take the whole thing. Of course they lost to the Giants, 4-1 so maybe they don't want it either.

Speaking of Colorado, they will be unable to trade reliever Brian Fuentes by the trade deadline. The team had put him on waivers on Monday, but on Tuesday Fuentes was placed on the bereavement list. If they were to put him back on waivers on Friday, he would not be able to clear by the September 1st deadline.

Make it 10 straight for the Indians as they edged the Tigers, 9-7. Funny, when they had CC Sabathia and Casey Blake they couldn't win and now that they've lightened their load, they can't lose. Is that like the definition of addition by subtraction?

The Twins picked up a game on the White Sox with their 6-5 win and the White Sox 11-3 loss.

Royals GM Dayton Moore met with Jose Guillen about the whole heckler incident, which apparently occured when manager Trey Hillman was in the toilet. Because you know, "managers do have to use the restroom."

Instant replay goes into effect on Thursday (TODAY). The new technology will reportedly cost $2.5 million. Money well spent in my eyes.

Nascar Update:
Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards have been put on probation for their tangle at Bristol. This is looking like a full blown fued and frankly, that's what Nascar has been missing.

Joey Logano will get his feet wet in six Cup races this fall. In 2009, the 18 year old will be taking over Tony Stewart's #20 ride.

Jimmie Johnson can't wait for the Chase to start. Yeah, because that is the only time of year he can competely dominate the Series.

News&Notes: Shawne Merriman is skipping knee surgery and has decided to play this season. Because who really wants to walk without a limp at after age 30?...Speaking of people who are going against the advise of their doctors, Baltimore Ravens QB Kyle Boller will not undergo surgery to repair his partially torn labrum in his throwing shoulder. If it works for John Smoltz and Curt Schilling, oh wait a second...Warriors guard Monta Ellis will be out for three months with an ankle injury...Joe Sakic announced he will hold off retirement for at least one more season after signing a one year deal with the Colorado Avalanche. He'll be making $6 million. Yeah I'd put retirement on hold for $6 million...Jelena Jankovic powered her way to the third round of the US Open...Oscar De La Hoya nad Manny Pacquiao will square off on December 6...Olympic swimmer Eric Shanteau has undergone surgery to remove a cancerous testicle. The Georgia native was diagnosised with cancer in June but elected to hold off surgery until after the Olympics. My well wishes go out to Eric!

Disappointment at Yankee Stadium

Wednesday night’s Yankees game had an eerie feel to it. Like the fans in attendance knew death was imminent, but they were hoping to hold off their meeting with their maker for at least one more game. As the final out was recorded, it was a common thought, the Yankee’s playoff hopes and their long consecutive streak of post-season appearances was over.

The game did not start off well for New York. Sidney Ponson had difficulty finding the strike zone and the Red Sox batters were teeing off on him left and right. But somehow, Ponson managed to escape allowing just two runs. The Yankees fought back notching a run of their own from a Alex Rodriguez double in the bottom of that inning before tying the game at two apiece in the fourth. Then the flood gates opened including Boston’s seven run eighth inning that put the nail in the coffin and left fans shaking their heads, completely stunned. Final score: Red Sox 11, Yankees 3.

As I exited the Stadium I saw a range of emotions. From the angry fans that were lamenting about the past eight years to the fans who were looking out into space wondering what events had brought them to this point and why were they allowed to bare witness to it. The street leading to the subway was more packed than I had ever seen with people walking shoulder to shoulder down the road and the entrance to the four train reminded me of those clowns that continuously pour out of a Volkswagen Bug. Despite the massive crowd barely a word was uttered. There were no words that could explain their disappointment in a team they believed to be invincible. They are not Cubs fans who wait for the other shoe to drop. They don’t live in Philadelphia or Cleveland where their fans almost expect to lose. They are New York Yankees fans who lived through four World Series Championships from 1996-2000. They expect to be cheering for their team in the Canyon of Heroes every November and now they won’t even be cheering for them from their seats in October.

I think the man two rows above me summed up the situation, “Giants season starts next week!” Indeed it does.

Jose Guillen Does Not Like Hecklers

Royals outfielder Jose Guillen had to be restrained by his third base coach Luis Silverio and others during Tuesday’s 2-1 loss to the Rangers. The problems began in the first inning when Guillen ripped a ball to left field for a single. The fan was apparently not pleased that Jose didn’t make it into a double and let him know about it. Then things got ugly in the fourth when Guillen flew out and the fan let him know about his displeasure, prompting Jose to get a little frisky.

"The [next] at-bat, when I hit the ball to left field, he said the magic words," Guillen said. "Something personal about my family. I don't deal well with that. That's enough right there."
The fan was escorted out of the stadium by security, while Guillen continued to play. Lame, I only enjoy my fan/player stories when they involve the Palace at Auburn Hills. They know how to do things right over there.

Things I Learned: Some People Actually Stay Retired

The Giants were hoping to fill the hole Osi Umenyiora’s season ending surgery opened up with a familiar face, Michael Strahan. However, after some careful consideration, Mikey has decided not to un-retire and instead kick back in his beach chair in Greece. Strahan had signed with Fox Sports to serve as an analyst for the upcoming season, but the network said they would allow the veteran DE to return to New York if he wanted. In the end, not even the money -- reportedly around $8 million -- was enough to get him on a plane to New York.

Can you blame him? He’s got a sweet deal with Fox and he’s enjoying an awesome vacation in Europe, I wouldn’t put down the sunscreen either.

The Giants have moved Mathias Kiwanuka (relative to Uganda’s first Prime Minister Ben Kiwanuka – who knew?) over to DE to take the place of the injured Umenyiora. Let’s just hope Kiwanuka can stay healthy this season.

The My Computer Wasn't Working This Morning Edition

Baseball Update:
Instant replay will make it's official debut on Thursday, beginning with series that begin on the 28th, replay will open up to the rest of the league on Friday.

Three important series began on Tuesday, including a tough battle between division rivals the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies. The Mets opened with a 7-0, but failed to score after the fourth inning, opening up the door for Chris Coste, who singled in the winning run for the Phillies in the bottom of the 13th inning. If this is a precursor for the rest of the year, the NL East is going to be a dog fight.

The Yankees, who are desperately trying to stay alive in the Wild Card, made it a little harder on themselves, falling to the Red Sox, 7-3. Alex Rodriguez was 0-for-5 with two strike outs and twice ground into a double play.

The Red Sox placed outfielder J.D. Drew on the 15 day DL with his lingering back problems. Boston may have picked up Atlanta outfielder Mark Kotsay to help alleviate the loss of Drew.

The Cardinals were hosting an important series as well. Going into Tuesday's game, St. Louis was sitting just 3.5 games behind the Brewers in the Wild Card...that was until they were absolutely shut down by Milwaukee ace Ben Sheets, who delivered six innings of no run ball. Ryan Braun was 3-for-5 with a two run homer while Prince Fielder added three hits and two RBIs in the Brew Crew's 12-0 pounding of the Cards.

Brandon Webb is stuck on win #19 after the Padres took care of the Diamondbacks, 9-3. Webb went just 4 and two thirds inning allowing six earned runs in the loss.

Meanwhile, Indians pitcher Cliff Lee matched Webb's Major League Best of 19 wins as the Tribe continue to plow through with their 9th straight win. Ben Francisco contributed two homeruns in Cleveland's 10-4 victory over the Tigers.

The Cubs have owned the Bucs this season, but their latest win took a big eighth inning rally to complete. Geovany Soto drove in 7 runs as the Cubs took out the Pirates, 14-9.

Colorado beat the Giants, 7-2 after starter Jorge De La Rosa was able to get out of early inning troubles and hold on for six innings. They stand just six games out of first in the West and after last season, they are figuring anything could happen. Maybe that's why they've placed closer Brian Fuentes and Willy Taveras on waivers.

The Braves were able to stage a late inning stunner, something they haven't been able to do all season and the Florida Marlins who are trying to hold onto their postseason hopes did not appreciate it. Yunel Escobar capped a four run ninth with a game winning single that gave Atlanta the 10-9 win. Wow, a late inning comeback and a one run win, that's practically unheard for Atlanta in 2008!

Good news for the Rays, third baseman Evan Longoria will resume hitting this week as a part of his rehab program. Longoria, who is recovering from a broken bone in his right wrist, hopes to be back with the team by September 1st. The Rays meanwhile, could have used his services as they fell to the Blue Jays, 6-2.

Nascar Update:
Casey Mears has bounced from car to car almost since he began with Ganassi in 2003. He's driven the #41, #41, #25 and #5 in the past four years and is hoping to just get some consistency when he moves over to Richard Childress Racing in 2009. Nascar.com sat down with the driver, click here for the interview.

It's official, Reed Sorenson has left Chip Ganassi and will be racing for Gillett Everham in 2009. The car number, sponsor and crew chief details, well that's all TBD.

The Budweiser Shootout at Daytona will be around for the next three years, but there will be some changes to the event.

Jeff Gordon's frightening crash at Las Vegas Motor Speedway has prompted the track to add a new SAFER Barrier along the inside wall on the back straightaway. It's always nice to see that Nascar and its tracks continue to improve safety measures.

News&Notes: Derrick Harvey has ended his hold out with the Jaguars, signing a five year contract worth $30 million...Sad news, former Trail Blazer Kevin Duckworth has died. He was only 44...My well wishes go out to former NBA players Wayman Tisdale who lost part of his leg to bone cancer...Ana Ivanovic rebounded from an early scare with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 defeat of Vera Dushevina. Roger Federer and Serena Williams also advanced out of the first round of the US Open.

Check this out: You know I love this, BetUS.com is putting odds on which NFL player will be arrested first. (via The Sporting News Blog) I'm going Pacman Jones but like most procedural crime shows its never the most obvious person who gets arrested.

New Jersey teen dies during football practice

As many of you readers know, I enjoy looking at the lighter side of sports, the college students who don’t get that stealing a credit card is a bad call, the pros who never know when one is too many and the crazy fans that make sporting events so much fun. But every once in a while you read a story that has no light hearted moments. One that forces you to ask “why?” And this is such a story.

On Monday, a 13 year old Waldwick, NJ boy collapsed during football practice and died. Sean Fischer was in the middle of a drill when he fell to the ground. Two of his teammates thought he was kidding around, but a father on the sideline realized it was no laughing matter and rushed to the boy, administering CPR. Paramedics arrived on the scene and used a defibrillator before taking him to Valley Hospital in Ridgewood where he was pronounced dead. The practice was the first for the team in full padding and could have contributed to his death, but at this point a cause of death is not known. The event has left many in the community shaken.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

Note to self: Do not post ads on Facebook

The University of Buffalo’s leading scorer Andy Robinson will miss the first three games of the season after posting an advertisement to pay someone to write a course paper for him last semester. Robinson has resumed practicing with the team since his initial suspension in April.

"He has done everything asked of him from the university, division of athletics and men's basketball program to atone for his actions, and has learned and grown from his mistake," Witherspoon said in a statement.
Robinson placed an ad on Facebook’s marketplace website offering $40 for someone to complete a paper for him. Good choice kid. At least on Craig’s List you could have some anonymity. Plus $40 seems a little stingy. I don’t even know if you could have gotten a 10 year old to write you a paper for $40.

30-30 Club

Baseball Update:
Grady Sizemore hit two homeruns in the Tribes 4-3 victory over the Tigers. The win was the team's 10th straight and the homeruns gave Sizemore 31 on the season making him only the second Indian to have at least 3o homeruns and 30 steals. Joe Carter completed the feat with Cleveland in 1987.

Brett Meyers faced some scary situations but managed to get out of them unscathed as the Phillies blanked the Dodgers, 5-0. The win completed the sweep of LA and allowed Philadelphia to keep pace with the Mets who also won on Monday. The two teams face off in a short two game series in Philly on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Mets placed John Maine on the DL with a bone spur in his shoulder. It is yet unknown if he will be able to return to the team before the end of the season. With Maines relocation to the DL, the Mets activated Luis Castillo. Newsday is reporting that the Mets have called up Jon Niese to take Maine's spot in the rotation.

The Padres ended a seven game losing streak in dramatic fashion. Jody Gerut hit a walk-off two run homer off of Jon Rauch to give San Diego a 4-2 win. Arizona's loss was softened by the fact that Los Angeles also lost keeping their three game lead in the division in tact.

The Twins wasted a chance to tie the White Sox in the Central with their 4-2 loss to the Mariners. Adrian Beltre hit a game winning homer in the bottom of the 11th to excitement of his Seattle teammated who had lost 8 of their last 10 games.

Minnesota acquired Eddie Guardado in a trade with the Texas Rangers for a minor league pitcher.

The White Sox earned a 4-3 victory after losing the first half of a almost double header. (The first game was a completion of an April 28th game that was suspended because of rain.)

The Blue Jays have optioned Kevin Mench to Triple-A Syracuse on Monday and sent catcher Robinson Diaz to Pittsburgh to complete last week's trade for utilityman Jose Bautista.

The Cubs annihilated the Pirates, 12-3. Kosuke Fukudome drove in four runs while Aramis Ramirez homered and drove in three runs of his own in the win. The Cubs hold the best record in baseball at 81-50.

The A's outdueled the Angels with a 2-1 victory. Dallas Braden picked off Chone Figgins in the first inning for the staff's 26th pickoff of the season which leads the majors.

Five more players have been suspended after testing positive for banned performance-enhancing substances. They include Dominican Summer League players Rafael Aybar (LA Dodgers), Alfredo Buret (Florida Marlins), Julio Sanchez (Baltimore Orioles) and Eliel Sierra (Minnesota Twins). The fifth player was St. Louis Cardinals catcher Juan Castillo who was assigned to the rookie league Gulf Coast League.

The 10 finalists who will be voted upon by a 12-member committee for entry into the Hall of Fame have been announced. The players including Allie Reynolds, Bill Dahlen and Joe Gordon, all began their careers before 1943.

Nascar Update:
Part owner of Chip Ganassi Racing, Felix Sabates says his driver Reed Sorenson is most likely headed to Gillett Evernham Racing in 2009. Such candor, I love it!

Testing could be radically different in 2009.

An 18 year old has been hired to drive for Randy Moss Motorsports and no his name is not Joey Logano who was announced as the new driver for the #20 cup car next season. Instead it will be Marc Davis who will race in 6 Truck Series Races for the team.

News&Notes: Fox has reportedly given Michael Strahan the green light if he chooses to go back to the Giants this season......And that's a good thing because the two saids are apparently talking...Chad Pennington has been named the official starter for the Miami Dolphins...Shawne Merriman will go for a fourth opinion on his damaged knee. So far it's three for surgery, zero for hugging it out. But maybe the fourth times the charm..Texans receiver Harry Williams will never play football again after suffering neck and spinal injuries during a preseason game against Dallas...USC quarterback Mark Sanchez looks to be on the road to recovery, participating in a full practice 17 days since he dislocated his knee cap...LPGA Players must learn English or else they could face losing their membership...Fidel Castro is siding with Cuban taekwondo athlete Angel Matos who in his opinion rightfully kicked a referee in the face at the Beijing Olympics after being disqualified. James Blake is a Mets fan?

Imagine my surprise when I found myself glued to the TV watching James Blake’s match against Donald Young in the first round of the US Open. (I blame the Olympics for my new love of Tennis) Oh, but baseball was never far from my mind thanks to Blake who appeared to be wearing a loose short sleeved top with the Mets NY symbol on his lower left sleeve to pay homage to the team that literally was playing across the subway platform at Shea Stadium. For his show of support, the Mets rocked the Astros, 9-1 with Mike Pelfrey going the distance for his second straight start. Coincidence, I hope so!

Well Now I Feel Old

Joe Gibbs Racing has officially announced Joey Logano will be taking over the #20 Home Depot Toyota in the Cup Series, which will be vacated by Tony Stewart at the end of the 2008 season. In addition to the car, sponsor and owner points, Logano will also be inheriting crew chief Greg Zipadelli, who will not be following Tony to Stewart Haas next season and hopefully his sports psychologist if Denny Hamlin or Kyle Busch don’t need him.

Logano, 18, won in his third Nationwide Series start this season and plans to make his Cup debut at Richmond International Speedway on September 6th.

This kid was born in 1990! 1990!! In 1990, I was a sprite youngster in Mrs. Padilla’s second grade and this kid was just being born. Oh, do I feel old right now. Get me something with alcohol and keep the ice cubes out of it, no need to water it down in my time of need and maybe a copy of An American Tale or The Little Mermaid so I can relive the early 90s and try to remember what it was like to be young again.

Taking it into Extras

Baseball Update:
Pedro Feliz not only hit the game tying RBI in the ninth for the Phils, but he also delivered a walk-off homerun in the 12th to give Philadelphia the 5-2 win over the Dodgers. Andre Either collected a five ball walk in the first when home-plate umpired Jerry Layne lost track of the count. Well that's reassuring.

The Mets bullpen remained shakey without veteran closer Billy Wagner. Pedro Feliciano gave up solo homeruns to Brad Asmus -- his second of the season-- and to Darin Erstad in the 10th allowing the Astros to get the 6-4 victory. Adding insult to injury, the Mets may have to shut down starter John Maine for the remainder of the season thanks to a nagging shoulder injury.

The Pirates sure didn't make it easy on the Brewers to earn the sweep on Sunday, but a game winning RBI by J.J. Hardy in the 12th allowed Milwaukee to take out the Brooms with a 4-3 victory.

A.J. Pierzynski was involved in a controversial run-down in the 10th inning. He was ruled safe due to infielder interference (Willy Aybar) and was given third base. Two batters later Alexi Ramirez drove in Pierzynski for the winning run. The 6-5 win over the Rays, coupled with Minnesota's loss gave Chicago a half game lead in the Central.

Francisco Rodriguez picked up his 50th save of the season -- only 7 back of the record -- highlighted LA's 5-3 defeat of the Twins.

In another extra innings game, rookie Jed Lowrie hit a game winning homerun in the 11th in Boston's 6-5 edging of the Blue Jays. Dustin Pedroia added a three inning round tripper as a part of a four run 3rd. The Red Sox, who will enter their final series at Yankee Stadium, will be without starter Josh Beckett who is still experiencing tingling in his pitching arm and possibly J.D. Drew who is hoping to avoid a trip to the DL wiht a herniated disk in his back.

The Yankees completed a three game sweep of the Orioles after Robinson Cano hit a tiebreaking homer in the seventh giving the Yanks a 8-7 lead. Cano went 4-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Hank Steinbrenner wants Joba Chamberlain back on the mound as either a starter or a reliever by the end of this season. There is no reason for this, you're pretty much out of the playoff race barring a miracle, why risk hurting your future for no reason. Just have Pavano pitch. (He won on Saturday by the way. A modern day Mike Hampton.)

Dan Harden had 11 strike outs, while Mark DeRosa, Geovany Soto and Kosuke Fukudome added homeruns in the Cubs 6-1 bashing of the Nats.

Not only did Albert Pujols hit a two run homer in the Cardinals 6-3 victory over the Braves, but for a brief moment he surpassed Chipper Jones for the NL batting crown. He now trails Chip by less than a percentage point. Go Chipper Go!

Johnny Cueto left Sunday's' game after just three innings with soreness in his right triceps tendon. Of course the game continued for another nine innings until the Rockies Omar Quintanilla homered in the 12th to give Colorado a 4-3 edge.

Congrats to Hawaii who picked up the Little League World Series Championship with a 12-3 drubbing of Mexico.

Nascar Update:
Congrats to Carl Edwards who picked up his second straight cup W with his victory at Thunder Valley on Saturday. Kasey Kahne, Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Burton were among the unfortunates involved in wrecks during the race.

Congrats to Brad Keselowski who took the lead from points leader Clint Bowyer on lap 227 and never looked back, earning him the Nationwide Series victory at Bristol.

Speaking of Brad, he reportedly declined an offer to drive for Penske Racing in 2009. Penske looks like it is a sinking ship.

It's official, Casey Mears will be driving the #07 for RCR in 2009, while Clint Bowyer, who is currently in the #07 will move to the #33 General Mills Chevy for the team. Nascar would not allow Bowyer to take his #07 points to the #33, so he will not have a guaranteed spot in the Daytona 500, unless he takes the Chase.

Jeremy Mayfield could land in the Hall of Fame racing ride for three races this season.

Pair of Aces

Olympic Update: (IF YOU DON'T KNOW BY NOW, I'LL REPEAT, SPOILERS AHEAD!!!)
2 American teams picked up gold on Thursday/Friday (it's so confusing). So congrats to the US Woman's team who knocked out Brazil, 1-0 to take the soccer crown and to Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser for grabbing the gold in Men's Beach Volleyball with a 23-21,17-21, 15-4 victory over Brazil.

The US Men's Basketball team, the Women's Basketball team, Men's Water Polo and Men's Volleyball team will take to the court and water in their respective gold medal games. While the Men's baseball team will go against Japan for the Bonze.

The IOC investigated whether Chinese gymnast He Kexin is actually 16. And after looking at documents provided by China, they say she is. Oh yeah, ask China for documents, that's like asking an 18 year old for their actual license when you catch them drinking at a bar.

Surprise, Surprise, Michael Phelps is writing a book. And for the record, if I won 8 gold medals I'd be writing a book, selling my own breakfast foods, marketing a clothing line and whatever else it takes to cash in.

Lyudmila Blonska was striped of her silver medal in heptathlon after she failed a drug test, making her the highest profile athlete to be kicked out of the Olympic games thus far.

Vancouver thinks it can do it better in 2010.

David Beckham has been confirmed as a member of the Closing Ceremonies on Sunday. He'll be handed the Olympic flag to symbolize the move from Beijing to London for the 2012 Olympics.

Baseball Update:
Brandon Webb added another win to his already Major League leading best 18 with the Diamondbacks 4-1 victory over the Padres. The win gave Arizona the sweep and Brandon Webb his 19th win this season.

Not to be outdone by his National League conterpart, Cliff Lee tossed another gem for the Indians givng him his 18th win of the season. Grady Sizemore went 4-for-5 with 7 RBIs in the 10-3 mashing of the Royals. If only Cleveland could have been this good from the start, then maybe it would have been a three team race for the AL Central and not a two team.

The Twins started their series with Angels on the right foot or should I say glove, after Nick Punto tripled off of former Twin Torii Hunter's glove to score Denard Span and give the Twins a 2-1 in 12. With the win the Twins are now tied for the Wild Card with Boston and just a half game behind the idle White Sox in the Central.

Red Sox right-hander Bartolo Colon pitched four no-hit innings in a rehab start for Triple-A Pawtucket.

The Mets brought out the Brooms after sweeping the Braves with a 5-4 win. Carlos Delgado drove in the game winning run with a single that hit off of Omar Infante's glove and scored David Wright. Newly acquired reliever Luis Ayala picked up the save.

Mets outfielder Ryan Church could be back with the team in time for their four game series with the Houston Astros. Does this mean Nick Evans or Daniel Murphy is going to be sent down, becuase I'm not ok with that.

The Nats ended their 12 losing streak in a big way thanks to an Austin Kearns single in the eighth that broke up a 3-3 tie. The Phillies gave up their third eighth inning lead in nine days and now sit 2 1/2 games out of first. Is it just me, or do the Phillies lack that extra spark they had last season?

The luck Gods in the Misty-May and Matt Treanor household shone much brighter on Misty as she and teammate Kerri Walsh picked up a gold medal and Matt's Marlins fell to the Giants, 4-3 after Emmanuel Burriss scored the winning run off of a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth. I figure they're both ok with that outcome of events.

If only fantasy teams gave bonus points to pitchers that racked up homers and RBIs, than Carlos Zambrano would be even more of a stud. (And Micah Owings could be a worthwhile pick) Instead, the Cubs will just have to savor his homerun -- his fourth of the season-- and the seven innings of one run ball he allowed as the Cubs picked up a 3-2 win over the Reds. The win was his 13th of the season.

Roy Halladay picked up his third straight win against the Yankees as the Blue Jays pounded New York, 14-3. If the poor performance by the Yankees wasn't a big enough sign that there will be a Yanks-less postseason this year, the fact that Carl Pavano will take the mound for the Bombers on Saturday should be.

With Justin Duchscherer on the DL, the A's will feature an all lefty rotation. They also placed Sean Gallagher on the DL with shoulder fatigue and called up Dana Eveland and Dan Meyer from Triple-A Sacramento.

Former big league pitcher Jorge Sosa was supsended 50 games for testing postive for amphetamines. He is currently with the Seattle Mariners organization at Triple-A Tacoma.

With instant replay looming, games may start running even longer than their average 2 hours and 50 minutes. My feeling is, a) this shouldn't come into play until 2009, there is no reason a change as big as this should happen mid-season and b) if it means getting the call right, than I don't care if it takes a few extra minutes to get the call right.

Nascar Update:
Can you hear the thunder emanating from Bristol Motor Speedway as the Cup boys race around this banked short track? With only three races remaining until the Chase, the point’s standings can get shaken up instantly thanks to the beating and banging that often result in multiple accidents throughout the way. And with laps under 15 seconds, it's easy to fall three laps behind with a tire mishap. So who will take the Sharpie 500? You'll have to tune into ESPN at 7 PM on Saturday night to find out.

News&Notes: Now usually I don't talk about golf, because I enjoy playing it but I don't enjoy watching it. But because the Barclays is being played at the hometown country club, I'm breaking my rules and giving you chance to click here for the Record's blog on the tournament...Newly crowned golden double partners Venus and Serena Williams could meet in the quarterfinals of the US Open...Charger Shawne Merriman has ligament damage in his knee...Pacman Jones will make his first start for the Cowboys. Lock-up those strip clubs because someone may want to celebrate...J.T. O'Sullivan made a big case to become the 49ers starting QB.

Markieff Morris is not the smartest guy in the bunch

Kansas in-coming freshman Markieff Morris got in trouble with the popo after shooting a BB gun from his dorm window striking a 47 year old woman in the arm. Luckily, the injury was minor but the kid is still facing an assault charge. Campus popo reported shots were fired from a room in the Jayhawker Tower at 11:15 PM. They also believe alcohol played a factor in the shooting. Really, alcohol, never would have guessed that.

The popo have seized a 3-foot long black Airsoft rifle and a medium sized plastic bag of BBs. Apparently, things you can apparently pick up at a Wal-Mart according to Jayhawks coach Bill Self. Of course I wouldn’t know that because the closest Wal-Mart is like 30 miles away or something. We’re more of a Target kind of area.

Markieff and his twin brother Morris were a part of Bill Self’s 2008 recruiting class. The brothers are from Philadelphia but attended Apex Academy, a prep school in Pennsauken, NJ, where they certainly didn’t teach them how to shoot a BB gun because we don’t do those types of things in Jersey. Watch out Markieff, because the popo are on your tail!

Separated at Birth

Shawn Johnson finally picked up a gold medal thanks to her impressive performance on the balance beam. (Bringing much joy to my mom, who was totally rooting for her.) But it's her strong resemblance to Milk Money's Michael Patrick Carter that got her in this post. They both have that same all American face with that blonde hair and freckles. They totally could have been twins!

Be Kind Rewind

Olympics Updates: (REMEMBER KIDS SOME OF THESE THINGS HAVE NOT AIRED, SO READ WITH CAUTION)
Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh remain undefeated and with a shiny new gold medal to show for it after beating China 21-18, 21-18.

They aren't the only ladies that could walk away with a volleyball gold as the US beat Cuba, 25-20, 25-16, 25-17 to advance to the gold medal final.

The US Softball team suffered their first loss of the Beijing games in the gold medal finals, falling to Japan, 3-1. This if the first time since softball was introduced as an Olympic sport in 1996 that the Americans have not taken home gold.

The ladies are hoping to redeem themselves in soccer's gold medal round after beating Japan, 4-0 in the semifinals. The US will go up against Brazil, who they beat in the 2004 Olympics but who they fell to in the World Cup in 2007.

LeShawn Merritt upset defending champ Jeremy Wariner in the 400 meters. David Neville dove across the finish line to give the Americans the medals sweep.

Both the men's and women's US relay teams dropped the baton in the 400 relay, blowing any chance at medal.

The IOC is none too thrilled with Jamacian sprinter Usain Bolt and what they believe is a lack of respect given to his fellow competitors following his gold medal performances in both the 100 and 200 meters.

Baseball Update:
A day after they boycotted a meeting with Major League Baseball, the umpires are on board with instant replay, which would only be used in boundary calls such as fair or foul and whether it is a homerun.

The Red Sox scored four runs in the first two innings, but Clay Buchholz had another poor outting, giving up five runs in two and third innings as Boston fell to the Orioles, 11-6. Buchholz was optioned to Double-A following the game. Meanwhile, the Sox signed former Red David Ross to a minor league contract.

Garrett Anderson extended his hitting streak to 23 games in a big way with an infield single that scored the go ahead run in the Angels, 5-4 victory over the Rays. The win gave Los Angeles the best record in the majors and helped them avoid a sweep.

The Yankees got some help from their veteran core as Derek Jeter hit a two run homer and Andy Pettitte pitched seven strong innings in New Yorks' 5-1 defeat of the Blue Jays. Newly acquired Xavier Nady continues to impress going 2-for-4 with a RBI in the win.

Ken Griffey, Jr.'s homerun on Wednesday moved him into a tie with Sammy Sosa for fifth all time as the White Sox dimantled the Mariners, 15-3. Griffey was one of for Chicago players to go yard.

Franklin Guetierrez hit a three run homer in the Indians five run eighth to give Clevenland a 8-5 win. Royals outfielder Mitch Maier was injured during the game when he was hit in the face by a Zach Johnson pitch in the fifth inning. Maier was taken to the hospital for x-rays, which revealed fractures below his right eye.

As the Twins prepared to hit the road for the next two weeks, they gave the hometown crowd a little senoff with their 3-1 victory. Mike Redmond drove in two runs while Francisco Liriano shut out the A's in his five innings of work, allowing Minnesota to keep pace with the White Sox in the Central and gain ground on the Red Sox in the Wild Card.

Speaking of the central, the NL central, the Brewers picked up a game with their 5-2 win over the Astros and the Cubs 2-1 loss to the Reds. Have I told you how much I love Bronson Arroyo lately? Manny Parra earned his first victory in a month for Milwaukee while Rickie Weeks' three runs were the difference makers.

The Reds brass sent fans a letter apologizing for sucking so bad this season and the last seven seasons in which they've failed to hit .500. But please keep buying tickets, we have to get good adventually right. And at least we've made the playoffs once in the last 26 years unlike some other team I know.

The Cardinals who are just 2.5 games behind the Brew Crew in the Wild Card could be without starter Kyle Lohse for five games (really just a start) if his suspsenion holds up. Lohse was given the penalty for throwing a pitch over Reds pitcher Edimson Volquez's head. However, St. Louis was uneffected by the news as they destroyed the Pirates, 11-2.

Both the Phillies Brett Meyers and the Mets Mike Pelfrey tossed complete games for the win on Wednesday. Meyers resulted in the Phillies 4-0 shut out fo the Nats, while Pelfrey's first career complete game hit a rocky patch in the sixth as the Braves tacked on two runs and at one point had the bases loaded with nobody out. But Pelfrey rallied and gave the Mets the 6-3 advantage.

The Braves got some good news, as there appears to be no ligament damage in Tom Glavine's elbow. Glavine will undergo surgery on Thursday, but if he and the Braves want to, could be back for 2009.

Nascar Update:
Nascar dropped the hammer on Joe Gibbs Racing's Nationwide Series #18 and #20 on Wednesday. Both teams were penalized #150 driver and owner points, while crew chiefs Jason Ratcliff and Dave Rogers have been placed on indefinite suspension and have been fined $50,000 each. #18 crew members Dorian Thorsen, Michael Johnson and Toby Bigelow and #20 crew members Richard Bray and Dan Bajek have also been given the indefinite leave. The penalties stem from Saturdays race when crew members from both teams were caught trying to alter both the #18 and #20 in post-race inspection. This is harsh, but I was expecting suspending both cars for at least one race as well as the crew member suspensions.

Donnie Wingo, crew chief for the #41 Dodge driven by Reed Sorenson was fined $25,000 for improperly attaching weight on the #41 car at Michigan.

Gillett Evernham will rotate crew chiefs for the final 10 Naitonwide Series races this season.

Congrats to Kyle Busch for winning another Truck Series race this season.

News&Notes: Sad news, Hall of Famer and NFLPA executive director Gene Upshaw has died at the age of 63...Eagles WR Kevin Curtis could miss the opening game with a sports hernia...Rams runningback Steven Jackson has ended his hold out after agreeing to a contract with St. Louis...The NCAA has banned horse-collar tackles in college football...Mats Sundin still has no home but could he be heading to Philly? And what does he have to do with Teemu Selanne?

Check this out: Former New York Giant Jason Sehorn and his lovely wife Angie Harmon are expecting their third child. Meanwhile, Matt Damon's wife Luciana gave birth to daughter, Gia. And Ricky Martin has two new kids via a surogate. (Obvi!) Plus Jennifer Garner admits she's pregnant with baby number 2. Now that was a lot of baby news for one morning.

Hump Day Hair

While people ponder who has a better chance to win the Chase for the Championship, Carl Edwards or Kyle Busch, I’m instead pondering what the frack happened to their hair?

Between Carl’s I have been too busy lifting weights, grabbing footlongs at subway and you know winning races to get a trim look

And Kyle’s, so that’s why mom said to avoid sticking a fork into the socket style.
I would have to say Jamie McMurray is looking like a shoe in for the Chase for the Best Hair trophy

Or that silver fox Dale Jarrett (w/former teammate Elliott Sadler)

Carl and Kyle, you’ve got some work to do.

Greg Maddux is back with the Dodgers and here is a picture to prove it

It seems like only two years ago that Maddux was brought over to LA to help with a late season push, oh wait, because it was just two years ago. Here’s hoping for a division series knock out.

Fine, not the most flattering photo, but it's not the clothes that make the pitcher it's the velocity and control.
Plus I think I like him best when he's hanging out with these guys better

20 mugs of beer on the wall, 20 mugs of beer

Hideki Irabu got a little feisty after consuming 20 mugs of beer at a local bar in western Japan. The former Yankee apparently got a little perturbed after his credit card was declined and took it out on a poor innocent bartender, “allegedly pushing the bartender against the wall, pulling his hair, and smashing at least nine liquor bottles.” Don’t go taking out your aggression with some perfectly good liquor. Use the peanuts, I mean who eats that stuff anyway? Lord knows what kind of germs are in there.

Luckily, the bartender did not suffer any injuries and Irabu copped to his little freak out after paying the bill with a different credit card. So all seems to be about settled; except for the hours of community service and the mug shot viewing party. Watch out Hideki, because the popo are on your tail!
