August 3, 2006

Last night’s Dixie Chicks concert was cancelled due to extreme heat. Boo! So I went home, went out to dinner with my mom, (which I’m also enjoying for lunch today,) and watched Rock star: Supernova. Bye bye Dana!

It has been so hot, it’s ridiculous. At 11:16AM this morning it was 90 degrees in New York City, 90 in Atlanta, and 92 in Boston. At 10:19AM it was 90 in Nashville and 85 in St. Louis. At 9:21AM it was 88 in Phoenix and 84 in Las Vegas. At 8:25AM it was 83 in Palm Springs, CA. The cool spot is definitely the Northwest, where it was only 59 degrees in Seattle. It’s been so hot that NFL teams like the Redskins are holding afternoon practices at night. Major racetracks in the northeast closed yesterday because it was unsafe for the racehorses. And some zoos are feeding the lions frozen blood. (That’s supremely gross!) Hopefully, the heat wave will break soon.

Braves Update:
The Braves beat the Pirates last night in a close 3-2 battle. Matt Diaz hit only his 3rd homerun this season, as he continues to prove himself in a crowded left field platoon. Edgar Renteria brought in the winning run. Tyler Yates picked up the win and Bob Wickman once again scored the save. It was not all good news; Adam LaRoche suffered a strained right hamstring sliding into second. He will not play in today’s game. The Braves go for the sweep against the Pirates this afternoon. (Did I mention that I hate afternoon weekday games? It forces me to constantly check gameday!) The game is at 12:35 on TBS.

Games to .500: 6
Games behind Cincinnati Reds: 4.5
Games behind New York Mets: 14

Just in case: If you’re a hunter, you might want to check out Chipper Jones’ personally guided deer hunts on his Double Dime Ranch in Texas. It costs just $15,000 per person. Seriously, S-I-G-N-M-E-U-P!

Random quote: "I think two years ago, in my rookie year, a lot of these balls are doubles," LaRoche said. "I wasn't quite as strong and didn't have as much power. Now they just happen to be leaving the ballpark. I've got to give a lot of it to just working at the ranch. Whether it's cutting trees, putting up fences or deer stands, every day we're out there working." - Adam LaRoche on why he's hitting so many homeruns
(I wonder if he’s talking about Chipper’s Ranch because Rochie doesn’t really make enough money to own his own ranch.)

Chase Update: It took him 5 tries but Chultey extended his streak to 34.

NASCAR Update:
Reminder: Richard Petty, Michael Waltrip, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. will join Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly on Larry King Live tonight on CNN.

In other Dale Jr. news, June says that he’s proud of his team whether they make the chase or not. Apparently, he feels things could be worse. Thank goodness his last name is Earnhardt (financial and job security), he’s not ugly (adoring female fans would go away if he was ugly and not winning), and that he made $25 million last year and ranked 9th on the Fortunate 50. (He made $20 million from endorsements alone. You can double his earnings if you include his merchandise.) So yeah, I guess things could be worse!

Giants update:
It’s hot in Albany! So much so that they are shortening practices, so not to kill any players from say…heat stroke.

Battle for third sting quarterback continues and since Jesse Palmer is not included the “Bachelor” edge goes out the window, although, I guess Hasslelbeck gets points for being married to Elizabeth from “The View,” Well not really, who knows how much longer she’ll be there once Rosie joins the show. Coach Coughlin is hoping one these guys (Jared Lorenzen, Tim Hasselbeck or Rob Johnson) will emerge as the clear loser, so he can dump his ass.

Celebrity Tid Bits:
The hits just keep on coming for Katharine McPhee, American Idol Season 5 runner up. After missing the first three weeks of the tour due to laryngitis and bronchitis, McPhee suffered a fractured foot Tuesday at Bobcat Arena in Charlotte, NC.

Kristin Cavallari of “Laguna Beach: The Real OC” fame has landed two big screen roles. (Well big screen now, direct to video later) First up is “Bob Baily’s Disco Ball,” a true winner if I’ve ever read one, and the second, “Spring Breakdown.” Amy Poehler, Rachel Dratch and Parker Posey are all signed on to this “Mean Girls” 2, featuring members of the SNL cast not included in the original.

Ebay truly is amazing. You can find that old New Kids on the Block t-shirt you always wanted, or designer knock offs, autographed baseballs cards or potato chips in the shape of the Virgin Mary. You can now bid on clothes owned by THE Tori Spelling. Looks like someone should make up with her mom, huh? Just a little letter, maybe a txt message, even send over a doll or something, you know Candy has that creepy doll room. I’m sure she’ll put you on an allowance in no time. PS, what happened to the 90210 money?

Birthday shout outs go to Martha Stewart who turns 65 today!

Don't forget tomorrow's Friday, that means movie reviews!

It's been fun blogging with you,

Kate
