Bootless and fancy-free
The Patriots have arrived in Arizona. Tom Brady told reporters, yes, he hurt his foot during the AFC title game; no, he doesn't know when Gisele is arriving and yes, he'll be able to play in the Super Bowl. If only other quarterbacks were able to shake off personal questions like that. Then maybe we'd have a little less news on Jessica Simpson and a little more news about the actual game of football. One can only dream.
While the Patriots look forward to winning a fourth Super Bowl in this decade, they also mourn the passing of former coach Mike Holovak who died at the age of 88.
In other Pats news, their defensive tackle Vince Wilfork was fined for the fourth time by the NFL for unnecessary roughness during the AFC title game.
If you're what it would be like to rank all 106 men playing in this year's Super Bowl, wonder no more. Click here to see who's number one and who is number 106.
And if you were to ask Giants WR Plaxico Burress how the Giants match up to the Patriots, he'd tell you "just fine, thank you."
While Giants chairman Steve Tisch would tell you that not only would the Giants match up well against the Patriots, they're good enough to beat them. Although he's a little blurry about the score.
Meanwhile, the Giants held their final practice in New Jersey on Saturday before boarding a flight to Arizona on Monday.
If you haven't gotten your Super Bowl tickets yet it's going to cost you, like an average of $4,300. Super Bowl tickets were originally listed between $700 and $900.
Football Update:
Late Friday afternoon, the internet was a buzz with the story that the Oakland Raiders were hoping coach Lane Kiffin would resign prior to the start of the 2008 season. For Kiffin's part, he hopes to stay on the Raider sideline for his second season as head coach.
The NFL has cleared Cincinnati linebacker Odell Thurman to workout with the team. Thurman is currently in the midst of serving a two year sentence.
The NFL is expected to announce that the Chargers and Saints will be packing their bags for a game in London in 2008.
Baseball Update:
Click here for the latest craziness in the Clemens saga.
Clemens can count A's DH Jack Cust as one of the few people who took longer than him to deny Mitchell Report accusations.
Chuck Knoblauch is still waiting for that little subpoena the federal government was supposed to serve the former major leaguer.
The Twins announced on Friday afternoon that they had signed 2006 MVP Justin Morneau to the largest contract in Minnesota history, 6 years, $80 million. They also announced the signing of outfielder Michael Cuddyer to a three year, $24 million deal.
In other Twins news, pitcher Francisco Liriano says he's good to go after taking a year off to recover from Tommy John surgery.
Looks like the Erik Bedard trade to the Mariners trade may become a reality after Seattle outfielder Adam Jones was asked to leave his Venezuelan Winter Ball team. Jones is reportedly a part of the trade package to get Bedard.
Former Phillies and Dodger catcher Mike Lieberthal is calling it a career.
In other catchers news, apparently that small knee injury Paul Lo Duca sustained while working out, is a little bigger than his people first let on. Lo Duca is scheduled for surgery on his left knee to repair a minor meniscus tear. He will, however, be expected to recover in time for Opening Day.
Derek Jeter pulled out the stops for his fifth annual Derek Jeter Celebrity Golf Classic which benefits his Turn 2 Foundation.
Yankees outfielder Johnny Damon was honored at the 85th annual New York baseball writers' dinner for his work with wounded soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Popo in my crib News:
NFL Hall of Fame QB Warren Moon is expected to enter a plea in his drunk driving case on Febraury 5th. Moon was arrested on December 28th in Seattle after the popo noticed expired registration tabs. When Moon showed the popo his valid Texas driver's license then noticed his driving privileges in Washington had been revoked. They brought him to the Kirkland popo station where he was booked and released. Watch out Warren, because the popo are on your tail!
Babe Ruth's nephew George Herman Ruth along with his buddy Robert Pilkey were convicted of defrauding the IRS of about $360,000 in false income tax returns. The defrauding reportedly took place while the two were inmates at the Fort Dix Federal Correctional Instiution from January 2003 to December 2004. Sentencing was scheduled for May 4th. Watch out Georgie and Robby, because the popo are on your tail!

Isiah Thomas got mo problems, yo!
Oh but the story gets better, seems Josh does not know how to hold his liquor. The freshman "vomited and passed out in the police car on the way to jail." He was released on $500 bail after being charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct, illegal consumption of alcohol and being a minor in a tavern.
I bet Thomas longs for the days when he only had to deal with Stephon Marbury, an intern and the backseat of a pick-up truck.
Watch out Josh, because the popo are on your tail!

Rangers raise #2 to the rafters
Last night the Rangers retired the #2 made famous by Brian Leetch. In a near 45 minute ceremony which featured a speech from long time friend and teammate Mark Messier, Leetch thanked various teammates, associates including Jim Dolan (which drew the ire of fans who sprinkled the arena with loud boos), the city of New York and the Ranger fans.
But another announcement made by Leetch drew the surprise of former teammate Adam Graves, when Brian told the crowd the Rangers were going to retire Graves' number 9 at a later date.
The night did, however, belong to number 2, and just to make it a little more exciting, the Rangers defeated the Atlanta Thrashers 2-1 in a shootout.

Former "Gladiator" in hot water
But one such former Gladiator Lace has found herself in a little bit of hot water. According to a report on the website tmz.com, Lace aka Marisa Pare was arrested at around 1:15 PM after the popo found drug paraphernaila on her person. She was taken to Van Nuys jail were she was booked for possession of narcotic paraphernailia and is being held on $250 bail. Surely a girl who starred on a hit show like "Gladiators" from 1989 to 1992 couldn't have blown all of her dough on some special sauce or could she? Watch out Lace, because the popo are on your tail!

NBA to play outdoors
Suns part owner Dick Heckermann got the idea from a local parks manager. Heckermann then brought the idea to Suns President and CEO Rick Welts. The idea has gotten such good feedback that they laid a basketball court on the surface and sent GM Steve Kerr over to make a special visit. The plans are expected to be formally announced next month and according to Welts, "It's going to be incredibly cool." Let's hope so.

Don't go steeling my rolex!
Former president Bill Clinton has chosen the New York Giants as his team in the Super Bowl. Although, if the Pats win, he'll probably claim he was rooting for them all along, but didn't want to upset his wife, New York Senator Hillary Clinton during this stressful time.
Coaching round up: The Falcons hired Brian VanGorder as their defensive coordinator, a day after officially announcing that Mike Smith would be their new head coach...Former Dolphins coach Cam Cameron wasn't unemployed for long after signing on to become the Ravens new Offesnive Coordinator...Speak of the Dolphins, their new wide recievers coach is former UCLA head coach Karl Dorrell...Ollie Wilson has reunited with the Chargers as their running backs coach...Todd Grantham is the Cowboys new defensive line coach.
Super Bowl news: The Pats remain mum on Tom Brady's foot but they did place back up safety Mel Mitchell on IR...The Giants are the biggest underdogs in the Super Bowl since the Patriots in 2001. Hey, how'd that turn out?...In other Giants news, Rich Seubert who is suffering from a sprained right knee vowed he'll be in the starting lineup for the Super Bowl.
You can add Bills defesnive end Aaron Schobel, Arizona Cardinals defensive tackle Darnell Dockett, Eagles defensive end Trent Cole and Redskins long snapper Ethan Albright to the list of this years Pro Bowlers.

The Yankees 2007 payroll of $218,311,394 was a new record and over $60 million more than the second place Red Sox with their payroll of $155,402,595. The Los Angeles Dodgers, who came in third with $125,581,316 were the highest in the National League.
David Wright thinks any player that has used steriods or human growth hormones in the past deserve "a hard penalty" even if that player happens to be his buddy Paul Lo Duca. Wright then added his secret to staying in tip top shape is vitamin water, the only suppliment he needs to play at his best.
Braves Update:
The Braves signed reliever Rafael Soriano to two year, $9 million deal, avoiding arbitration. I'm so excited, we've got our bullpen set, a great 1-2-3 punch in the starting rotation, Tex at first, an actual CF who has played higher than A ball and some young hitters like Francoeur and Brian McCann. Look out NL East, the Braves are coming!

Popo in my crib News:
Randy Moss will not be a Florida court room next week when a hearing will be held for Rachelle Washington who is seeking a perminant restraining order against the wide receiver following a January 6th incident. Moss will instead be with his team in Arizona preparing for the Super Bowl. And no, the Giants had nothing to do with it. The allegations came out before the Pats game against the Jaguars who happen to play in Florida, so talk to them. Watch out Randy, because the popo are on your tail!
Barry Bonds has asked a federal judge to drop the perjury charges levied against the baseball slugger. Bonds was formerly charged in November with lying under oath about his performance enhancing drug use. Watch out Barry, because the popo are on your tail!

ESPN unaware of what a roast is
ESPN has suspended "First Take" co-host Dana Jacobson after demeaning her remarks during Mike and Mike's roast to be "inappropriate." The comments were made about the Notre Dame football program which Mike Golic is an almunus of. Apparently these remarks did not sit well with the Catholics who are all in tizzing forcing ESPN to take action against Jacobson...Sports on TV: The Round Up
Versus has re-upped with the NHL through 2010-11 season. The network which currently pays $72.5 million for the right to broadcast games, will increase their payments over the next three seasons. Versus has sustained a 50% increase in NHL viewers over this time last year and has increased subscribership by 10 million viewers since it acquired rigths to air the NHL following the 2004-05 lock out season.
As mentioned in our daily crawl, Rusty Wallace will be replaced by Dale Jarrett in the ESPN booth during races. Wallace will be moved over to the pre-race show where he'll serve as lead analyst. ESPN also announced Allen Bestwick will become the new studio host replacing Brent Musburger and Suzy Kolber, while Shannon Spake will replace Bestwick on pit road. Let's hope ESPN is also willing to part with their wind technology during this year's broadcasts.
We're a little late on this, but David Justice will not continue as a studio analyst for the YES network this season. Instead, Justice will write columns and participate in online chats on YES' website. Justice, who's home burned during the San Diego fire in 2007, cited family, not the Mitchell Report, as his reason for changing his role with the network.

LeBron James celebrates his love of the Yankees in shoe form
Remember last year, when the world seemed to come down on LeBron James when he rocked that Yankee hat at Jacob’s Field during game 1 of the ALDS between the Bombers and his hometown club the Cleveland Indians. We all thought the Cleveland fans got the last laugh when their team gave the Yankees an early vacation with their 3-1 series win. Upon further review, maybe its James who’ll laugh last, or at least his beloved Yankees who according to James’ new shoes will be “Fresh for ’08 Suckers!”James has partnered with Nike to create the Air LeBron V shoe which "features New York's famed pinstripes as well as James' No. 23" that shows even famous basketball players are just fans underneath it all. Along with the pinstripes, "Le-Bron Ja-Mes. Clap. Clap. Clap. Clap Clap Clap" is written under the tongue, a nod to the role call performed by the bleacher creatures that populate Yankee Stadium. I wonder if he'll have to contastanly turn around and acknowledge his fans everytime they yell "Le-Bron Ja-Mes" in Cleveland or will he only do that when he's in New York. I can hear the phone lines ringing in Cleveland now, as fans once again berate their all-star forward.

Do the coaching shuffle
Lots of coaching news: Mike Holmgren is staying with the Seahawks for another game...The Bucs gave coach Jon Gruden and GM Bruce Allen three year extensions that will keep them with the team through 2011...Sources have Jacksonville Jaguars defensive coordinator Mike Smith becoming the Atlanta Falcons new head coach...The Chargers have fired James Lofton, their wide receiver's coach...Jim Fassel seems to be on the top of the Redskins' list to replace Joe Gibbs...Whenever Tony Dungy decides to leave the Colts, Jim Caldwell could become the perfect replacement.
Denver Broncos safety John Lynch was named to his ninth pro bowl after replacing injured Colt Bob Sanders.
As far as Jerry Jones is concerned, Terrell Owens with be back with the Boys for 2008 after giving the WR a $3 million roster bonus.
...In other Cowboys news, WR Terry Glenn will undergo microfracture surgery on his knee after having arthoscopic surgery on the same knee last season. He's expected to need a year to recover from the microfacture surgery.
Well wishes go out to former Tennessee Titan defensive tackel Rien Long who is in critical condition at a Nashville area hospital after crashing his Ford Mustang into a rock wall.
Former Dallas Cowboys running back Ron Springs' wife is suing two doctors for allegedly letting her husband slip into a coma following surgery in October.
Baseball Update:
Chuck Knoblauch politely declined a chance to speak to a Congressional Committee so they subpoenaed him. Like I said, you don't mess with the government.
The San Diego Padres have given GM Kevin Towers a two year extension that will keep him with the Club through 2010.
Donny baseball has moved from being the Dodgers batting coach to become a major league special assignment coach citing family priorities.
The Mets re-signed Endy Chavez to a two year, $3.85 million deal. Goodness, the Mets are going to be old and really screwed for 2008.
The Red Sox signed Dan Kolb and Dan Miceli to minor league contracts.
The Rays are thisclose to signing James Shields to a long term contract.
The Phillies are hoping that they can get a deal struck between themselves and first baseman Ryan Howard without the help of an arbitor. According to the AP, the Phils and Howard are a staggering $3 million a part. Howard made only $900,000 in 2007 but is hoping to get a bump to $10 million for 2008.
Second baseman Adam Kennedy skipped out on the Cardinals FanFest and manager Tony LaRussa is not happy. Seems like he's losing his grip on the team, huh?
The National Center for Drug Free Sport was chosen to be the official drug tester of Texas' high school steriods testing program. The NCDFS will have to test between 40,000 and 50,000 public school athletes by the end of the 2008-09 school year.
I know you were all nervous that after Jose Conseco got dropped from his first publisher that we'd never be able to read the sequel to "Juiced", but it seems Jose picked up a new publisher allowing his new book "Vindicated" to stay on track for its March 31st release date.
Popo in my crib News:
We don't like to judge, ok we love to judge, but we're thinking that Steelers receiver Cedrick Wilson may want to drop his crazy girlfriend Lindsey Paulat who fired two shots in his home on Monday and caused a standoff with the popo. While Ms. Paulat is in custody somewhere, Wilson decided to go for a proctection-from-abuse order against Lindz. Good move, good move. Cedrick, you may want to talk to Andre Rison, he's got experience with a crazy girlfriend who burned his house down. Watch out Lindsey, because the popo are on your tail!
Following the Titans successful request to be dropped from a lawsuit stemming from a February strip club shooting in Las Vegas, the NFL has petitioned the court to be dropped out of the suit as well. Tommy URbanski had filed a suit against the Titans, the NFL and Pacman Jones holding the parties responsible for a shooting which wounded him. Watch out people, because the popo are on your tail!
News & Notes: The Knicks continue to take a beating, this time at the hands of their former coach Larry Brown who claims in an article running in the February issue of "Philadelphia" magazine that the Knicks had spies all throughout the arena...In other Knicks news, Stephon Marbury is undergoing surgery to remove bone spurs from his ankle...Well wishes go out to Denver Nuggets forward Nene after news broke that the testicular tumor removed was in fact malignant...This just in, Sidney Crosby is still injured. Here's a question, who has gotten more press for their injury, Sid the Kid or Tom Brady...The Toronto Maple Leafs have fired their GM John Ferguson...Sad News, extreme skier Billy Poole died on Tuesday after jumping off a cliff for a scene for a documentary. He was 28...Kentucky managed a 72-66 upset of Tennessee. Kentucky is 8-9, while the Vols were 16-2...Roger Federer rolled passed American James Blake in the Aussie Open...Sad news, former Indy 500 announcer Lou Plamer died. He was 75...Get well wishes go out to Jacques Villeneuve, Sr., the uncle of Nascar driver Jacques Villenueve, who was released from the hospital after breaking his pelvis in the 45th World Championship Snowmobile Derby...So we kind of reported this story prematurely in OCTOBER, but Dale Jarrett will replace Rusty Wallace in the booth for ESPN's coverage of Nascar this season!!!!!!!!!! Rusty will remain with the ESPN crew as lead analyst in their studio programs.

If I were Brian France for the day...
Qualifying
-We were happy to see the new rule which would force all cars/trucks not locked into the top 35 in points to qualify in a block so as to limit any unfair advantages, but here’s another idea, how about the fastest 43 cars get in on time.
Points
-We love that they awarded an extra points to the winner preventing both the winner and second place finisher from receiving the same amount of points, but what if the winner got an additional 25 points and those drivers who do not finish in the top 30, receive the same amount of points thus stopping the practice of badly damaged cars slugging around on the track dropping fluid and parts which bring out cautions or worse, effect the outcome of the race.
The Chase
-Not that we’ve ever been big fans of this whole “playoff” system in Nascar (we may be one of the few people who like it less than Jeff Gordon and he’s been cheated out of the Championship twice) but if you’re so gung-ho on this whole thing, we’d like to add a few tweaks of our own. Bring the Chase back to the top 10 drivers. It was obvious the additional 2 drivers were out of the Chase after the checkered flag dropped in New Hampshire.
-Award a separate points system for Chasers than other drivers thus eliminating the egg-shell driving, non-Chasers may have around Chasers during the final 10 races. Award 15 points for the winner, 10 for second place, 8 for third, 6 for fourth, 5 for fifth, 4 for sixth, 3 for seventh, 2 for eighth through tenth. This adds a bonus for the winner and would keep the Chase close. Since at any point there could be only be a 13 point swing. Although we would still like to revert back to the Championship decided on the whole 36 race season instead of just 10 races from September to November.
Racetracks
-Bring back Rockingham! And stop moving races to places that cannot support two races, yeah we’re talking to you California. You were so cool selling out that one race a year, but as soon as you went to two races, all of sudden your seats became empty.
-Let’s stop awarding second dates to tracks and start going to new places like the Northwest or maybe even Canada, but make sure those tracks are not 1.5 - 2 mile flat tracks. How about another banked short track.
Races
-No more 500 mile races. I watch other forms of motorsports particularly the IRL and the one thing I enjoy most is that the races are over rather quickly instead of investing four hours on the couch. Keep the Daytona 500 at 500 miles because we’re into tradition and the IRL does run a race called the Indianapolis 500. Otherwise, there is no reason to have the races be soooo long especially at Pocono and even at Bristol, Richmond and Martinsville.
-Have all the start times be the same. Or make all east coast and mid-west start times at 1 PM and all west coast start times at 4 PM. Especially during the football season (when Nascar historically sees a decline in ratings, hence the Chase) we find ourselves watching the Giants game and then forgetting to switch over to watch the Nascar race when it finally gets underway at 2:30. And can they make the pre-race show shorter? (And yes, we saw this suggestion in the NY Times, but it’s a really great idea)
-Announce the reason for every caution, whether it be obvious like a crash or engine failure or obscure like that random piece of garbage on the track that you thought was metal. And if you called a caution because you didn’t want Dale, Jr. to go a lap down, make up whatever excuse you want, but just tell people why there was a caution.
Miscellaneous
-When you penalize a team, tell the public why and don’t use “actions detrimental to Nascar.” It would also behoove you to have corresponding penalties to various policy violations. Part of the reason why people are starting to turn away from Nascar is because people believe that different teams and drivers are treated differently. If everything is spelled out, then there is no way people can say that about Nascar.
Even if Nascar, isn’t so keen making these kinds of changes, we’ll still find ourselves tuning in every week.
It’s been fun blogging with you,
Kate
Danny Wheldon happy to call the IRL home
2005 Indy 500 and IRL champion Dan Wheldon is putting his Nascar aspirations on hold, at least until after the Indy 500."I'm going to worry about the (Indy) 500, and then we'll evaluate (NASCAR) toward the end of the year,” Wheldon said.
Dan blamed his poor finish in last year’s IRL standings on his Nascar distraction, saying that he started off the season well, winning the first two of four races, but then his finishes dropped off placing him fourth in the final championship standings.
But don’t think he won’t adventually be joining former teammate Franchitti in stock cars. Wheldon thinks Nascar is “the biggest stage in the world of motor sports.” And you know racecar drivers; they always want to compete against the best and then beat 'em and right now, Nascar maybe the place to do that.

Tom Brady gives gisele the boot
I don't know if you've heard, but the Giants and Patriots are going to the Super Bowl after their respective title game wins. The Patriots are already a 13 to 14 point favorite.
The ratings for the Giants OT win over the Packers on Sunday were an estimated 31.7 million or a 46 share, up 21% from last year's Bears victory over the Saints.
According to Bill Belichick, Patriots defensive lineman Richard Seymour did not play dirty. "That's the last thing I would say about Richard," Belichick said.

Patriots QB Tom Brady looked to have sustained an injury during the AFC title game wearing a cast on his foot while walking around NYC with girlfriend Gisele. Click here to see the tmz.com video.
Chargers QB Philip Rivers underwent surgery before Sunday's loss to the Patriots in the AFC title game. Rivers will undergo a more arthoscopic surgery to repair his torn ACL and is expected to be out for the next six months which would make him ready to play come training camp. Rivers really gets the warrior title in my book.
Coaching news: Tony Dungy will be back with the Colts for at least 2008...The last Giants head coach to lead the team to the Super Bowl, Jim Fassel interviewed with the Redskins...The Falcons will have to wait another two weeks to interview Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.
The Buffalo Bills will be without defensive end Anthony Hargrove for the entire 2008 season after he was suspended without pay for violated the League's substance abuse policy for the third time.
Baseball Update:
The Rockies are reportedly close to extending shortstop Troy Tulowitzki to a record 6 years, $30 million deal that would break Grady Sizemore's 6 year, $23.5 million extension with the Cleveland Indians in 2006. It would be the largest extension given to a player with less than two years Major League experience.
The Rockies also locked up MVP runner up Matt Holliday to a two year, $23 million contract on Friday.
The St. Louis Cardinals signed catcher Yadier Molina to a four year, $15.5 million extension.
I already feel bad for Scott Proctor's arm after he signed a one year, $1.115 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers which insure's his new/former Manager Joe Torre will end his career once and for all.
The Kansas City Royals signed free-agent pitcher Brett Tomko to a one year, $3 million contract.
The Geary rule will be in full effect in Houston, after Geoff Geary signed a one year, $1.125 million deal with the Astros.
Looks like Octavio Dotel won't be returning to the Atlanta Braves after he reportedly signed a two year, $11 million contract with the Chicago White Sox. Whatever, he played like two games for the Braves after he was traded from the Royals in 2007, we don't need him!
Another former Braves player Lance Cormier has signed a minor league deal with the Baltimore Orioles. I personally think Cormier is talented and hopefully he'll be able to get back on track after a pretty terrible 2007.
Outfielder Jody Gerut agreed to a minor league contract with the San Diego Padres.
The Cinncinati Reds signed reliever Jeremy Affeldt to a one year, $3 million contract.
Click here for the latest in arbitration news.
The Mets closer Billy Wagner will introduce Goose Gossage into the Hall of Fame.
Let this be a lesson to all TV stations out there, Albert Pujols banned St. Louis station KTVI from a press conference after they incorrectly reported that Pujols would be named in the Mitchell Report, prior to the Reports release. Did we learn nothing from the 2000 election. Don't report a story unless all of your facts are checked.
The Cubs will most likely not be sold until after the 2008 season. The slow process is due in part to the fact that the Tribune Co., which currently owns the team, is looking to sell of Wrigley Field first.
It's no DCC, but the Marlins held auditions for their Mermaids. Although, Brooke was a member of the Marlins dance team before she became a member of the DCC, so maybe you could call it a stepping ground for bigger and better things. I watch way too much "Making the Team: The Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders" apparently.
Popo in my crib News:
Lindsey Paulat, girlfriend of Steelers WR Cedrick Wilson, was in custody on Monday after a 12 hour standoff with the popo at Wilson's home. The incident happened after Wilson left his home following an argument. Paulat's mother later came over to the house to try to comedown Ms. Paulat, but Linds decided to take two shots at the wall with Mr. Wilson's gun instead. Paulat's mother then left the home and the standoff began. The popo evacuated about 70 neighbors as a precaution before Ms. Paulat tossed her gun out the front door and was taken into custody. Ms. Paulat is now staying in an undisclosed location. Watch out Lindsey, because the popo are on your tail!
News & Notes: It's really bad in Miami after they lost their 14th straight, a 97-90 defeat to Cleveland...Things are getting so desperate, that Alonzo Mourning may force a return...The Lakers took care of an ailing Nuggets team 116-99...Carmelo Anthony sprained his ankle during the game...Richard Lewis gave the Magic a 102-100 buzzer beating win...Sid the Kids badly sprained ankle will force him to miss the All-Star game this weekend. But on the upside it will allow him to catch on that whole "High School Musical" craze all of his friends have been talking about...Unfortunately for his Penguin teammates, they lost to the Capitals 6-5 in a shoot-out...The Sabres extend their road losing streak to 6 after falling to the Coyotes 6-2...Georgetown avoids the upset with a 64-62 OT win over Syracuse...UNC's loss to Maryland has Memphis taking the #1 spot in the AP Poll for the first time in 25 years...Phil Mickelson may miss the Buick Open with respiratory problems...Meanwhile Tiger Woods is looking to get the whole "lynching" incident behind him and the rest of the golf world. Good call, we're officially putting that story to bed...Maria Sharapova provided the upset of the day, taking out No.1 Justine Henin 6-4, 6-0 in the Aussie Open...Brain France is limiting the changes to Nascar, for now. Too bad he didn't bring that idea into focus when he announced the Chase, the addition of 2 more drivers to the Chase, when he took away dates from Rockingham and Darlington and gave them to California, who can't sell out either of their two dates or when they introduced the car of tomorrow say, one or two seasons too early...But he did announce a slight change to qualifying procedure. All cars not locked into the top 35 in owners points in the Sprint Cup, Nationwide Series and Truck Series will qualify at the end of the session, as to limit any unfair advantages. Ok, I can go along with this change.

The Giants Are Going to the Super Bowl! And it's written all over Coach Coughlin's face.
23-20) last night, I couldn't help but notice that Coach Tom Coughlin was sporting a seriously red face. We couldn't decide whether he looked more like he got a chemical peel, a horrible case of wind burn or like he had spent 3 hours in the Jamacian sun without screen on but a pair of large sunglasses. I was a little nervous his face was going to start bleeding during the
middle of the game and he was going to have to be carted off and come back with bandages. But just like the Giants, he held on (even through overtime) and was able to celebrate the win in the locker room with the rest of the team and Giants ownership. I just hope his wife lets him use her entire container of Lamar to lather all over his face. Or at least what they give to burn patients. Goodness his face looked terrible. Kate

Member of the steel curtain has died
Holmes, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from his car after it rolled over several times near Lumberton, TX.
Holmes became a minister after his six year NFL career which included two All-Pro selections while a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers. He also appeared in an episode of the "The A-Team."

Billionaires in Sports

Michael Schumacher
Born in Hurth Hermulheim, Germany in the winter of 1969, Schumacher rose through the ranks of Formula 1 to become arguably the greatest driver ever. He began a run of seven championships in 1994 only to retire 12 years later following the 2006 season. In 2005, EuroBusiness proclaimed Schumi the first billion dollar athelete thanks in part to his winnings and endorsements (although Forbes records his net worth around $650 million). In 2007, Schumacher ranked 24th on Forbes' top 100 celebrities list reportedly earning $36 million. Don’t we all wish we could make that kind of money in our retirement?
(Photo: seriouswheels.com)

Menard is entering his second season on the Sprint Cup circuit following a less than stellar rookie season for DEI. Unlike Schumacher, Menard's billions don’t come from his winnings or his endorsements but rather his father, John R. Menard, Jr. who in college started a small business which has turned into the multi-billion dollar home improvement empire, Menards, Inc. Menards may not be as well recognized as Home Depot or Lowes, but frankly Paul won’t have to worry if his whole racing career falls a part considering he and his five siblings could end up splitting papa’s $7.3 billion fortune. Did we mention that Paul’s dad was number 44 on Forbes’ Billionaire list for 2007? Now we did.

Mike Comrie
Mike Comrie could be called a journeyman after playing for the Oilers, Flyers, Coyotes, Senators and Islanders since being drafted in 1999. But his billionaire status lays in the hands of his father William (Bill) Comrie. Comrie gave up his hockey career at the age of 19 after playing for the Edmonton Oil Kings to go into the furniture business. And what a good call that was. Along with his brothers Fred and John, Comrie started The Brick Warehouse Corporation, the largest retailer of furniture, appliance, mattresses and electronics in Canada. The company enjoys sales of over $1 billion a year. And the money came in handy in 2007, when Mike’s Senators were in the Stanley Cup Finals. Bill was a season ticket holder for the Anaheim Ducks and was able to see his kid play. I knew Mike made some money playing hockey, but I could not figure out how he could afford to give girlfriend Hilary Duff a $100,000 Mercedes for her 20th birthday.

seriously frozen tundra
I can barely believe that the Giants are going up against the Packers on Sunday in the NFC title game. It seems like only a few weeks ago I was praying that they'd beat the Patriots in the regular season because I was sure they'd lose in the first round of the playoffs. Now they are one game away from getting a second chance against the Pats, but this time it would be in the Super Bowl. First things, first, they have to go up against a resurgent Brett Favre and his talented Packers team in Green Bay with game temperatures expected to be hovering around zero. Tune into Fox at 6:30 PM/est to catch all of the action.
Over in Foxboro, the Patriots look to keep their undefeated season going against an ailing Chargers team. Temperatures are expected a tad bit more tropical (in the 20s) than the game in Wisconsin, but most likely a little less exciting. The game starts at 3:30 PM/est on CBS.
Justin Tuck is staying with the Giants through 2013 after signing a five year extension that could net him up to $30 million.
Jason Garrett is staying in Dallas collecting a paycheck around $3 million to remain as an ASSISTANT! The money's good, but in the long run, is it ever a good idea to turn down a promotion?
...And the Boys gave offensive line coach Hudson Houck a three year extension worth $3 million.
The Colts have a back up plan if Tony Dungy decides to throw in the towel and his name is Jim Caldwell.
It was surgery day for the Seahawks as five players went under the knife including Shaun Alexander, Patrick Kerney, Walter Jones, Deion Branch and Chris Spencer. Gee, I hope they got a two-for-one deal out of this.
After the October Giants and Dolphins game held at Wembley Stadium, the NFL has decided to return to London in 2008. While the game was sold out, the performance on the field was less than great due to heavy rains and horrible pitch (field) conditions. Teams and a date have yet to be announced.
Baseball Update:
Bud Selig agreed to a three year extension keeping him baseball commissioner through 2012.
The FBI began investigating whether Miguel Tejada lied under oath...While word around the street is Congress will probably not grant immunity to Brian McNamee.
The sale of the Chicago Cubs is not imminent.
The Oakland A's re-signed Huston Street to a one year, $3.3 million contract.
The Blue Jays locked up five players, Scott Downs (3 years, $10 million), Marco Scutaro (2 years, $2.65 million) and Jason Frasor (1 year $1.125 million), Gustavo Chacin (1 year, $725,000) and Briand Tallet (1 year, $640,000). The Jays have one remaining player to sign, Alex Rios and they are hoping to lock him into a mutliyear deal.
Other signings: The Royals gave Jimmy Gobble a one year, $1,312,500 contract...Jason Kubel and the Twins agreed to a one year, $1.3 million deal...The Nats kept Tim Redding for one year with his $1 million contract...Chris Capuano got a raise on Thursday agreeing to a one year, $3.75 million deal with the Brewers...Jose Bautista agreed to a one year, $1.8 million deal with the Pirates avoiding arbitration in his first year of eligibility...And finally Matt Treanor is staying with the Marlins for another year.
The average baseball salary increased 7% to $2.82 million while the Yankees have the highest average salary, $7.47 million.
Sad news, former baseball executive and Detroit Tiger player John McHale died at the age of 86...also passing away on Thursday was former Phillies pitcher Steve Ridzik. He was 78.
Braves Update:
The Braves and first baseman Mark Teixeira agreed to a one year, $12.5 million deal on Thursday, avoiding arbitration. The Braves also signed relievers Mike Gonzalez (thank goodness) and Tyler Yates as well as infielder Omar Infante. The Braves have only two other players to sign reliever Rafael Soriano (give him whatever he wants) and outfielder Matt Diaz.
The Braves picked up left-hander Jeff Ridgway from the Tampa Bay Rays for infielders Willy Aybar and Chase Fontaine. Can we not give away all of our infielders. Chipper Jones is not playing 162 games, we need a solid replacement when he inevitably goes on the DL for 5 weeks!
Popo in my crib News:
The Reid family saga continues as Britt Reid, who is already incarcerated because of road rage charges, pleaded guilty to DUI and drug possession for an August parking lot incident. Reid reportedly got into his truck at Dick's Sporting Goods parking lot, after having trouble finding his vehicle and ran into a cart. He was then arrested. Watch out Britt, because the popo are on your tail!
Former NHL player Rob Ramage was sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty of five charges stemming from a 2003 car accident which killed former Chicago Blackhawk Keith Magnuson. Ramage had four times the legal blood-alcohol limit at the time of the crash. In addition to his jail time, Ramage will have his driver's lisence revoked for five years following his release from prison. Watch out Robby, because the popo are on your tail!
News & Notes: Like we didn't see this coming, the editor of Golf Week Dave Seanor who put a noose on the cover of this month's issue has been fired...Sad news, Chess prodigy Bobby Fisher has died at the age of 64...Another year, another early exit for Andy Roddick...This is getting exessive, Rich Rodriguez is claiming WVU is staging a smear campaign. You have a job, don't they have another coach, why can't you two move on?...South Carolina men's basketball coach Dave Odom is expected to retire on Friday...Cleveland State upset Butler 56-52...Vandy got trounced by Tennessee 80-60...The Cavs squeak out another win, this time a 90-88 victory over the Spurs...Jarome Iginal and Vincent Lecavalier were named NHL all-star captains...The Stars made it 6 in a row with a 4-2 win over the Sharks...Meanwhile the Leafs end their six game slide with a 3-2 shoot out win over the Bruins...Well wishes go out to Colorado Avalanche center Paul Stastny who underwent an emergency appendectomy on Thursday. How Zach Effron of you.

There must be better ways to show your Packers support
Kowald told reporters that the whole thing was a joke. "His son challenged him by saying he wouldn't root for the Packers. When he tied up the boy, the youngster was laughing while his wife took pictures." Then the kid started to cry, the mother realized that she probably shouldn't have just stood there taking pictures on her cellphone (which are being used as evidence) and called the police. Mrs. Kowald has been issued a restraining order against her husband who has a history of domestic violence.
Matt will probably not face felony charges but hopefully has learned a lesson, you should never tape things to your children. Watch out Matty, because the popo are on your tail!

Congrats on 900!
Tony Sparano is the new head coach for the Miami Dolphins. The former Cowboys assistant head coach will get between $2.5 and $2.7 million over four years.
The Kansas City Chiefs have hired Chan Gailey as their offesnive coordinator.
The Buffalo Bills have promoted Turk Schonert to become a new offensive coordinator.
Injury Update: Aaron Ross practiced for the Giants on Wednesaday. He is expected to play in Green Bay on Sunday...The Chargers Philip Rivers sat out of practice.

The Rangers signed Jason Jennings to a one year, $4 million deal.
The Cubs signed Jon Leiber to a one year $3.5 million contract.

Jeremy Guthrie signed a one year, $770,000 contract with the Baltimore Orioles.
The Florida Marlins locked up Mark Hendrickson to a one year, $1.5 million deal.
For whatever reason, the Mets are close to re-signing Jose Valentin. As a sign to come for the upcoming season, the Mets will be able to replace their 3o something second baseman with knee injuries with a 40 something INF with knee problems, if Luis Castillo needs a break.
Following a scary incident in which Juan Encarnacion was hit in the eye by a foul ball, Juan will miss the 2008 season, if not longer.
Houston Astro owner Drayton McLane does not regret trading for Miguel Tejeda, even though he is facing scrutiny from the federal government over his 2005 testimony.
Set your alarm clocks, the Boston Red Sox-Oakland A's March 25th major league opener in Japan will air live at 6:07 AM/est and 3:07 AM on the west coast. Guess there will be a lot of people coming into work late.
Popo in my crib News:
Randy Moss denied allegations that he committed battery to a woman in her Florida home on January 6. The woman was issued a temporary restraining order against Moss and a permanent status could be awarded following a January 28th hearing. No criminal charges have been filed. Watch out Randy, because the popo are on your tail.
I guess after sleeping on things, Ms. Wanda S. Jackson decided not persue her case against Adam "Pacman" Jones because she withdrew he petition on Wednesday. I still contend Pacman should steer clear of the strip clubs, but I doubt he will. Watch out Pacman, because the popo are on your tail!
Things are getting worse for former Yankee Jim Leyritz. Not only was it announced that his blood alcohol level was nearly twice the legal limit, but he is facing an additional charge of manslaughter to go along with his DUI manslaughter and DUI property damage charges. Leyritz was involved in a deadly crash on December 28th in Florida. Watch out Jim, because the popo are on your tail!
News & Notes: With Texas Tech's 68-53 win over Texas A&M, Bobby Knight picked up with 900th career win. Congrats Bobby!...UNC pulled out a 83-82 win over Georgia Tech...Duke rallied in the second half for their 70-57 win over Florida State...The Celtics stopped their two game slide with a 100-90 win over the Trail Blazers...Meanwhile, the Knicks have let the good times roll picking up their third straight win 111-105 victory over the Nets...Oh, and apparently Stephon Marbury needs surgery...Did Jamaal Tinsley get supsended or did he really miss the Pacers 117-125 win over the Golden State Warriors because he was injured?...You'd think that after being benched by your teammates that you'd walk around on eggshells for the next few games, oh but not Joakim Noah. The Bulls rookie reportedly got into a verbal tiff with teammate Ben Wallace during the Bulls 126-96 win over the Heat which featured the return of Shaq...With a 2-1 win, the Rangers handed the Sabres their 10th straight loss...The COT made its debut in Texas...Kasey Kahne lead the way in the final day of Cup series practice at Daytona.

Gene Haas reports to Jail
Nascar team owner Gene F. Haas has reported to the Federal Correctional Instiution in Lompoc, CA to serve his two year sentence for tax fraud. He is required to serve at least 85% of his sentence.A rough day for the popo
40 million people watched the Giants beat NFC east rivals Dallas Cowboys 21-17 on Sunday.
Deion Branch will undergo knee surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Luckily, the Seahawks were bounced out of the playoffs on Saturday so Branch will have months to recooperate from the surgery.
Speaking of Seattle, Mike Holgren is deciding whether his future will include Seattle.
Coaching Round-up: The Titans have fired offesnive coordinator Norm Chow...The Bengals have hired defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer...The Dolphins are close to signing Dallas' assistant head coach Tony Sparano...The Ravens have reportedly offered their head coaching position to the Cowboys' offensive coordinator Jason Garrett.
The New England Patriots will honor Anna Grant, a 14 year old high school freshman, during the Patriots AFC title game on Sunday. Grant was booed in Indianapolis while wearing a Patriots jersey (to show she was the girls' winner from New England) when the winners of the Punt, Pass and Kick competition were honored.
Congratulations to Cris Carter and Darrell Green on being named finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Draft Update: California's DeSean Jackson will enter the draft forgoing his senior year. Click here for a complete list.
Baseball Update:
While Miguel Tejada could spend his time worrying about whether his work visa will be revoked because he possibly lied during congressional testimory, he probably is much more preocuppied with grief after his brother Freddy Manuel Tejada was killed in a motorcycle accident on Tuesday.
Congress is concentrating on steriods and HGH in baseball but maybe they should look at the skyrocketing usage of ADD and ADHD drugs which are given an "Therapeutic Use Exemption" by MLB.
The Seattle Mariners have signed Arthur Rhodes to a minor league contract and George Sherrill to a one year, $980,000 deal. He can earn up to $60,000 in performance bonuses.

The Dodgers signed relief pitcher Yhency Brazoban to a one year, $540,000 contract to avoid arbitration.
If you actually want a piece of tanted history, then bid on Barry Bonds used items like the 754th home run ball or a bat used between homeruns Nos. 754 and 755. Just go to www.scpauctions.com to pad your collection.
Braves Update:
The Atlanta Braves are moving their triple-A affiliate Richmond Braves to suburban Atlanta. The newly named Gwinnet Braves will open up play in 2009 and will be only 36 miles from their Major Leauge counterpart.
Popo in my crib News:
Pacman Jones needs to go to the equivalent of AA for strip club addicts after news broke that a woman is seeking an arrest warrant, "claiming he punched her at an Atlanta strip club." To make matters worse, the woman, Wanda S. Jackson, is an attorney. Jones had been suspended by the League for the 2007 season after his mutliple run-ins with the popo culminating in a February shooting at a Las Vegas strip club. Geeze, maybe Jones should just have a pole installed in his home and hire some strippers, but knowing him, it will turn into another love boat incident. Watch out, Pacman, because the popo are on your tail!
Jacksonville Jaguars defesnive end Brent Hawkins was arrested and charged with DUI early Monday. Hawkins most likely was trying to forget the Jaguars beating on Saturday by drinking himself into oblivion, but unfortunately, he then chose to get into his 2007 Chevy Tahoe and drive 64 mph in a 45 mph zone and was pulled over by the popo. Hawkins kindly told the pop that this is his second DUI charge so he's not new to the situation. Watch out Brent, because the popo are on your tail!
Minor league pitcher Roman Colon pleaded no contest to assault stemming from a locker room fight in which he punched a teammate. Colon was with the Detroit Tigers at the time when he accidently punched pitcher Jason Karnuth who was attempting to break up the rucus. Karnuth suffered multiple broken bones in his face and missed much of the season due to his injuries. Colon was suspended by the Tigers before being shipped off to the Kansas City Royals. Colon was sentenced to 200 hours of community service. Watch out Roman, because the popo are on your tail!
News & Notes: Maria Sharapova and Rafael Nadal both advanced in the Aussie Open...West Virginia University is investigating what happened to player files that went missing after Rich Rodriguez left to head coach at Michigan. Not only is this childish but its also probably illegal, I bet Michigan wishes it had gone with their 37th choice!...Former prosecutor in the Duke lacrosse scandal has filed for bankruptcy. Mike Nifong claims he has more than $180 million in liabilities...Michigan State easily handed Ohio State a 66-60 loss...Hell really is freezing over, the Celtics have lost two in a row and after the Knicks 105-93 win over the Wizards, New York has won two in a row. Is the balance in power shifting? Yeah, probably not!...LeBron James' 51 points helped the Cavs beat Memphis in OT, 132-124...Our well wishes go out to Denver Nuggest forward Nene who underwent surgery to remove a testicular tumor. A biopsy will determine whether is is cancerous. Nene has been put on indefinite leave...The Capitals will be without Michael Nylander for the next six months after the center undergoes surgery to repair a torn left rotator cuff on Wednesday...Click here to see the list of rookies heading to the NHL YoungStars competition...Get well wishes go out to a member of Stuyvensant High School girl's track team who was paralyzed after a van carrying the team to the Dartmouth Relays flippped on a Vermont highway...Ryan Newman was fastest in the draft while Dale Earnhardt, Jr. topped am speeds.

Flu bug ravages Hurricanes' roster
The Carolina Hurricanes roster is being ravaged by a nagging flu bug that has affected all but seven players in the past month. It seems that everday a new player is infected. Carolina defenseman Glen Wesley discribed the illness as "first infect[ing] his chest, then raid[ing] his sinuses and caus[ing] an infection, causing him to miss three straight games."
