turning a page

Baseball: The Braves are getting busy. With Japanese pitcher Kenshin Kawakami reportedly in Atlanta taking a physical, the Braves have offered Derek Lowe a four year, $60 million contract...They also inked infielder Omar Infante to a two year contract...The Brewers signed J.J. Hardy to a one year, $4.65 million contract...The Rays signed Gabe Kapler to a one year deal...The Astros and closer Jose Valverde agreed to an $8 million deal...And the Indians extended their streak of avoiding salary abritration to 18 years by signing Kelly Shoppach...John Smoltz expects to be a starter this season for Boston...Congrats to Rickey Henderson and Jim Rice on being named to the Hall of Fame.

Basketball: Are the Celtics returning to pre-Christmas form? Well, let's not get ahead of ourselve, but they did make it two in a row, defeating the Raptors, 115-109 in OT...Mehmet Okur scored a career high 43 points in the Jazz's 120-113 victory over the Pacers...Brook Lopez's 31 points was a career best as the Nets toppled the Thunder, 103-99.

College Basketball: #23 Louisville battled past #13 Notre Dame, 87-73...While #6 Oklahoma edged #7 Texas, 78-63.

College Football: Colt McCoy will be returning to Norman, OK...A few weeks back, PIMC wrote about New Jersey native Myron Rolle. Apparently the Florida State safety has decieded to forgo the draft for one year to attend Oxford University. Rolle was awarded a Rhodes scholarship in Novemeber.

Football: Tony Dungy has retired as head coach of the Colts...Meanwhile the Broncos have named Josh McDaniels their new head coach...Ben Roethlisberger suffered a spinal concussion during the Browns game. Why is it that Big Ben never gets minor injuries? Never like a bruised elbow, always like a dislocated elbow...Cardinals TE Stephen Spach is out for the rest of the playoffs with a torn knee ligament...Cowboys linebacker Anthony Spencer was arrested outside of an Indianapolis night club. Watch out Anthony, because the popo are on your tail!...Kerry Collins really wants to start next year.

Hockey: Trevor Daley scored on his own rebound to give the Stars a 5-4 advantage in OT...Tamap Bay downed LA, 3-1...Good news for the Canucks, goalie Roberto Luongo says he's back to 100%...Bad news for the Bruins, they placed their leading scorer Phil Kessel on IR...While the Blue Jackets put their leading scorer Rick Nash on IR retroactive to January 6th.

Best of the Rest: Will Power will take over for Helio Castroneves at Team Penske in 2009. Stupid court cases, they put such a damper on your marketability.
