It appears even the prospect of staying with the Mets for another six weeks has made Billy Wagner change his mind about leaving for Boston. I mean if the news that Jeff Francoeur and Johan Santana are battling newly acquired injuries aren’t enough, how about sharing a clubhouse with Jerry Manuel for an extended period of time.
In agreeing to waive his no trade clause, the Red Sox have assured Wagner that they will not pick up his $8 million club option for 2010 but are still able to offer him arbitration, which would make him less attractive on the free agent market.
In return for Wagner, the Mets have received two minor leaguers to be named later and will not have to pay him $1 million to buy out his contract.
