ESPN is reporting that the Rays are close to signing outfielder Pat Burrell to a two year, $16 million contract. Burrell would move from his familiar position as left fielder to DH if the deal is finalized.
The move could cause a few more dominoes to fall. Both Jason Giambi and Ken Griffey, Jr. were rumored to be headed south, but the new signing could stimulate Giambi’s move back to the A’s and Griffey’s return to Seattle. Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure, there are still a bunch of big name free agents just ripe for the picking.
And PS to any Phillies players with their contracts up after the 2009 season, you may want to avoid taking your picture with me on Photo Day. Just look at exhibit A and B.
