Happy Trails
In their first game without him, the Braves pulled off a solid 7-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday. For now, they'll be looking to Rafael Soriano, Peter Moylan and the rest of the bullpen to pick up the slack. Maybe this will be what they need. Ok, it's more like I'm praying this will light the fire under their ass that will push them into the playoffs.
In other news, it looks like Michael Vick will be spending some time behind bars after announcing he'll plead guilty, admitting he bank rolled the dog fighting operations and that he was involved with killing the dogs. Luckily for Vick, he won't have to worry about missing any games because the NFL has given him an indifinate ban without pay. I guess he'll just have to live off that $30 million he's made so far.
I'm so excited for 2009's Longest Yard: The Michael Vick Story. You'll laugh, you'll cry, probably because you spent $15 on this movie instead of forking over $4 at Blockbuster for the Burt Reynolds classic. (I'm totally discounting the mess that was the 2006 version with Adam Sandler.) Watch out Mike, because the popo are on your tail!
UPDATE: In Ricky Williams, is that you news, Michael Vick might not be as wealthy as he thinks he is if the Falcons have their way. A new report says claims Atlanta is asking that his $22 million signing bonus be returned. CFL here he comes.

No more extra innings
Add to My Profile More Videos
So I didn't actually end up going to Great Adventure on Wednesday (too cold and rainy) but I did see Counting Crows and Live at First Energy Park aka the Lakewood Blue Claws home park. Here's a clip from the show.
Braves Update:
What made the Braves close to unbeatable in the first month and a half of the season was their ability to come from behind in the seventh, eighth and ninth and get those timely hits to win close games. Since then, the Braves have begun to mirror their 2006 team not their 1991-2005 teams. Case in point, Thursday's see-saw battle against the Cincinnati Reds. Buddy Carlyle was roughed up allowing six runs in five innings, but the Braves battled back tying it at five a piece in the bottom of the fifth before the Reds scored again to make it 6-5. The Braves grabbed two more in the seventh to again take the lead before the Reds evened it up. The game remained tied for another 4 1/2 innings until closer Bob Wickman allowed a walk off homerun by Adam Dunn in the Braves 9-7 loss. Fun fact, the last time Dunn delivered a walk off homer was against the Cleveland Indians and guess who was pitching...Bob Wickman! The Braves are not out of it, but they need to treat everyday like it's the playoffs if they want to make the post season. Check out the Braves taking on the St. Louis Cardinals tonight at 8:10 PM/est on SS.
Games behind NY Mets in NL East: 6
Games above .500: 4
NL Wild Card Leader: San Diego Padres
Braves Notes: The Braves put Edgar Renteria back on the disabled list one day after taking him off...Octavio Dotel will throw a bullpen session on Friday to test his sore right shoulder. He was eligible to come off the DL on Thursday...With the Braves well documented pitching woes, it's great to see Rookie reliver Manny Acosta pitching five scoreless innings.
NASCAR Update:
NASCAR is back at Thunder Valley and the excitement could not be any greater. With only three more races before the Chase, it's anybody's game. Bristol's wrecks can usually produce mass casualties because the big one is not just reserved for Talladega and Daytona, so one small slip and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. or Ryan Newman could take your place. Look for Bristol masters like the streaking Kurt Busch and points leader Jeff Gordon to dominate. Don't believe me, watch for yourself on Saturday Night, under the lights, when ESPN brings you the Sharpie 500 at 8 PM/est.
Mark Martin and Aric Almirola will split time in the #8 car for DEI in 2008 leaving room for a big time driver like maybe Greg Biffle to come in 2009...
Popo in my crib News:
Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Ried's son Britt was at it again on Thursday, this time at a Dick's Sporting Goods parking lot in Plymouth Township. Britt failed an administered field sobriety test but charges have not been filed in what could be a parking lot DUI. Luckily, only one shopping cart was injured in his drunken stupper. But that doesn't mean Britt isn't facing some court appointed cell time. He is awaiting sentencing on his January 30th road rage case. Watch out Britt, because the popo are on your tail!(Photo: AP)
News & Notes: It was an exciting night for baseball on Thursday when the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians, who are battling for the AL Central, emerged from the ninth inning with a scoreless game. But in extra innings, the bats came alive for the Indians who beat the Tigers 3-1...The Mets and Padres went back and forth all night with the Holy Men taking out Queens' finest 9-8...No record breaker here, as Albert Pujols ended his consecutive games homerun streak at 5 and his team didn't fair any better losing to the Marlins 11-3...The Los Angeles Dodgers may have had quite the banner day picking up veteran pitcher David Wells while beating the Phillies 5-2...Reggie Miller will not be making a comeback telling the Indianapolis Star, "Physically, I know I could have done it. But mentally, when you do something like this, you've either got to be all in or all out." Physically, really?...In too bad Tiger isn't there news, Rory Sabbatini is leading The Barclays after Thursday. Sabbatini must play his best games when he's not going head to head with Tiger Woods, although he may think otherwise. The Barclays is the first round of the PGA's inagural FedEx Open...And finally, yesterday I posted a new addition to the blog, a poll. I want to gage your feelings on which postseason system you think is dumber, the FedEx Cup of the Chase for the Nextel Cup.

I have to go to class too?
And speaking of night time battery, two Boston College football players will not be disciplined by the team after being charged with assualt and battery in connection with a July bar fight. Team co-captain Gosder Cherilus and DeJuan Tribble along with Massachusetts State popo sergeant Joseph J. Boike were charged after assaulting a patron at a bar who refused to clear an area for Eagles players. Who does that guy think he is? Not moving for a bunch of college football players who will spend their adult lives talking about the good old days while taking a swig of their Rolling Rock and hitting on young disinterested college girls. Watch out Gosder, DeJuan and sergeant Joe, because the popo are on your tail!
And you thought only the men cheated. Purdue's women's basketball team is on probation for two years and will lose two scholarships this season for improper recruiting, oh and the assistant coach Katrina Merriweather helped write papers for her players. So you have to go to class and write papers, what's next, you have to take tests? Where is the bonus of being an athlete?
In other college basketball news, Illinois will be without guard Jamar Smith after his drunken-driving conviction. He was sentenced to 15 days in jail and 24 months of probation. Smith will redshirt the season (I can't believe you can legally miss a season and not be penalized to take care of your court ordered requirements) while he gets stuff done.
That's all the college news fit to print this afternoon. I really hope someone has a blog devoted to collegiate athletes indiscretions!

Not another one
Not only did the Braves lose for the fourth time in five games, but they also saw their all-star short stop Edgar Renteria reinjure his ankle in his first game back from the DL on Wednesday. Mark Teixeira stared at a questionable third strike to end the game in the Braves 4-2 loss to the Cincinnati Reds. On the flip side for the Braves, Brian McCann and Andruw Jones have remained hot, producing the only runs of the game. With the San Diego Padres beating the Mets, the Braves now are faced with a two game deficit in the Wild Card and six in the NL East with a little over a month to play. The Braves close out this series at 7:10 PM/est on SS.

Random Quote: "I don't have to say anything about it, because the game is on TV." - Mark Teixeira on the third strike call that ended the game for the Braves.
NASCAR Update:
Contray to popular belief, Jeff Gordon will not be appearing on NBC's Celebrity "Apprentice." Now I really have no reason to watch that show. (via jayski.com)
Congratulations to Johnny Benson who won the annual Wednesday Truck race at Bristol holding off Brendan Gaughan.
News & Notes: In there is no mercy rule in the Majors news, the Texas Rangers scored 30 runs to beat the Orioles 30-3 in the first game of their double header on Wednesday. The second was not quite as exciting as the Rangers only managed to put up 9 runs in their 9-7 sweep of the O's...This was on the same day that Baltimore announced their interim coach Dave Trembley would remain with the team through 2008...Brandon Webb ended his scoreless innings streak at 42 coming up 17 innings short of Orel Hershiser, but on the plus side the Diamondbacks beat the Milwaukee Brewers 3-2...Jerome Bettis is a sneaky guy, in his new book he claims he faked a knee injury in 2000 to avoid getting cut by Pittsburgh Steelers. I guess it worked because he ran for 1,341 yards that season...Finally, congratulations to Tom Brady and Bridget Moynahan on the birth of their son on Wednesday.

Quick Post
Braves Update:
The Braves entered the top of the ninth inning one run down. With the tying run on base, the Reds walked Mark Teixeira leaving it all up to Jeff Francoeur, who revals being in this position. Unfortunately for the Braves Frenchy got the final out in the Braves 8-7 loss to the Cincinnati Reds. The Braves will need to take the next two games in this series to keep in stride with the Mets in the NL East and the Phillies and Padres in the NL Wild Card. Catch all the action at 7:10 PM/est on SS.
Games behind NY Mets in NL East: 6
Games above .500: 6
NL Wild Card Leader: San Diego Padres/Philadelphia Phillies
Braves Notes: The Braves put Chuck James on the DL...The Braves released Tanyon Sturtze.
NASCAR Update:
Miracles do happen, and the Cup guys laid witness to that on Tuesday when they were able to get the entire 3M Perforamnce 400 race in after trying on Sunday and Monday. With a brief slow down due to fog, Kurt Busch found himself in Victory Lane for the second time in three races.
Race Results Points Standings
News & Notes: Sad news, former Minnesota T'Wolves player Eddie Griffin was killed when his SUV colliaded with a train. He was only 25...Only one other team on Tuesday was able to match the number of RBIs Garrett Anderson put up in the Angels game against the Yankees, 10, in the Angels 18-9 win over the Bronx Bombers...The Braves wished they were able to accomplish what the Mets did on Tuesday when they scored two runs off of super saver Trevor Hoffman in their 7-6 win over the San Diego Padres. Also, did anyone else think it looked like was snowing during that game?...And finally, I bet Tiki's thinking, thank goodness I retired, especially after making his comments during halftime of Football Night in America on NBC. Eli responded, but one thing is for sure, Eli needs to step up if the Giants have any hope of winning like seven games, ok eight, this season.

when I get older

Vinny Testaverde (43)
Testaverde just resigned with the New England Patriots for his 21st career season in the NFL. Luckily for him, he’ll be backing pro-bowler Tom Brady. Since being drafted in the 1987 season by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Vin’s played for Cleveland Browns/Baltimore Ravens (94-97), New York Jets (98-03, 05) and Cowboys (04) before landing with the Pats.

Julio Franco (“48”)
Julio will always hold a special place in my heart because of his will and tenacity. Franco made his major league debut in 1982 for the Philadelphia Phillies before being traded to the Cleveland Indians. Funny thing is, not one player on the current Rome Class A Braves, Franco’s current team, was alive to see it. Julio has spent time with over seven MLB teams (including Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox, Atlanta Braves and New York Mets) as well as teams in Japan, South Korea and Mexico. Since his 2001 return to the big show, Franco has served well as a pinch hitter and sometimes first baseman. He is also the oldest player to ever hit a homerun and the only active player to have been pitched to by a pitcher (Jim Kaat) who also pitched to Ted Williams (in 1959).

Dikembe Mutombo (40)
With only the possibility of a Reggie Miller (42) and Charles Oakley (43) return, we had to move to a player who actually saw action during the 2007 season, Dikembe. Mutombo was drafted in 1991 by the Denver Nuggets after attending college at Georgetown University. Mutombo excelled at defense winning the defensive player of the year four times and making the all-defensive team six times (First team: 3; Second team: 3). While he’s bounced from Atlanta to Philadelphia to New Jersey to New York before landing in Houston his skills have not diminished, too much. Mutombo is currently a free agent, but we’re hoping he can do one last farewell tour before calling it a career.

Chris Chelios (44)
At 44 years young, Chelios is still bashing heads as a member of the Detroit Red Wings. Drafted in 1981 by the Montreal Canadiens, he has played the most games and compiled the most penalty minutes by any active player. He also owns two successful restaurants in Michigan called Cheli’s Chili Bar I and Cheli’s Chili Bar II.

Ricky Rudd (51)
Taking the top spot on the age ladder, Rudd will actually be stepping down at the end of the 2007 season. Plus 50 drivers in NASCAR is nothing new, look at Handsome Harry Gant who was winning races in his 50s and Dick Trickle, who’s probably racing somewhere right now. Rudd made his first Cup start in 1975 back when Winston was still the naming sponsor. By 1977, he had the racing world on its ear picking up Rookie of the Year honors two years before Dale Earnhardt, Sr. Rudd has driven for top organizations like Richard Childress Racing, Robert Yates Racing, Hendrick Motorsports and his own team during his long career. But we will be sad to see him go after the checkers drop in Homestead in November.

Dara Torres (40)
15 months after giving birth Torres proved she was still competitive after winning the 100-meter free style at the U.S. National Championships in early August 2007. Torres hopes to earn her fifth straight Olympic appearance in the 2008 summer games in Beijing.

Chicks dig the long ball
Brian McCann got the game going with a bang, hitting his third career grand slam in the first inning and the Braves never looked back. Mark Teixeira added two more homeruns in the Braves 14-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds. Big Tex has been battling the flu but you wouldn't know it with his 4 homeruns in 24 hours. Tim Hudson moved to 95-1 when given a three run lead and 15-5 on the season. Even better the Braves are now just a game behind in the Wild Card. Their series against the Reds continues with JoJo Reyes stepping in for Chuck James on the mound. Watch the game live on SS at 7:10 PM/est.

NASCAR Update:
NASCAR will try for the third straight day to get the 3M Performance 400 underway. The race is scheduled to start at 10 AM/est on EPSN2. If NASCAR can not get at least half of the scheduled distance in, the race will be moved to the weekend after Thanksgiving.
Fun Fact: According to jayski.com, the last time a Cup race was held on a Tuesday was August 11, 1970 at International Raceway Park in Ona, WV.
News & Notes: Bobby Jenks' ended his consecutive outs streak at 41, putting him at a tie with
Joey Gathright. But luckily for the White Sox, they were able to get the 4-3 win over the Kansas City Royals...The Mets picked up Jeff Conine from the Cincinnati Reds on Monday for two minor league players. This comes just a day after they put Damion Easley on the 15 day DL with a sprained ankle...ARod hit his 40th homerun of the season in the Yankees 7-6 extra innings loss to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, while Prince Fielder hit his 39th homer in the Brewers 9-0 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks, putting the Brew Crew in control of the NL Central...Taking the Matt Leinart path, Tom Brady has asked for time off to bare witness to the birth of his child with former girlfriend Bridget Moynahan. Only time and Coach Bill Belichick will know the answer...Kevin Durant and Nick Collison were dropped from the U.S. team who are currently competing in the FIBA Americas tournament, which is an Olympic qualifier...Finally, blind golfer Sheila Drummond heard the sweet sound of her hole in one at the par-3 fourth hole at Mahoning Valley Country Club. Drummond, who was blinded by diabetes 26 years ago, was playing with her husband and two friends when she cleared the 144 yard shot. Seriously, you've got no excuses now!

I fought the law, but the law won
In other college football arrest news, Alabama's starting cornerback Simeon Castille was arrested for disorderly conduct on Sunday. He was taken to Tuscaloosa County jail and released. Details of the incident have not been released, but I'm hoping they're good, like involving a stun gun or maybe public urination good. Watch out Simeon, because the popo are on your tail!
UPDATE: Law of three comes into effect today, as two West Virginia football players were charge with transferring and receiving stolen property on Sunday. Both James Thomas, 18 and Ellis Lankster, 21 were competing for starting spots with the #3 ranked Mountaineers. This reminds me of a little story out of Storrs, CT...Watch out Jamie and Ellie, because the popo are on your tail!
UPDATE 2: Seriously, when it rains, it pours. This one comes to us from Iowa where two football players were arrested for charging upwards of $2,000 on stolen credit cards. Anthony Bowman and Dominique Douglas were arrested when they attempted to make purchases at Hatworld, C&E Fashions and Sneakerhead. How about Best Buy kids? Think bigger than some $20 hat. Well $2,000 would buy a lot of $20 hats...Watch out Tony and Dom because the popo are on your tail! (via AOL Fanhouse)

I'm sorry, am I in San Francisco?
John Smoltz gave up an early run to the Diamondbacks in the first, but by the fourth batter in the top of that inning, the Braves already had a one run lead and never looked back. Mark Teixeira had 2 two run homers and Yunel Escobar added a solo shot in the Braves 6-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. By avoiding the sweep the Braves went 3-3 on their homestand but gave up two more games to the surging Mets. The Braves start a four game series with the Cincinnati Reds tonight at 7:10 PM/est on SS.

The Yanks also moved within 4 games of the Boston Red Sox in the AL East...Greg Maddux came through in a big way for the San Diego Padres on Sunday by getting it done on deffense and offense in the Pads 5-3 win over the Houston Astros...While the Giants picked up the 13-12 preseason win over the Baltimore Ravens, they may have lost in the long run as safety Will Demps left the game with a dislocated Elbow, cornerback Sam Madison pulled a hamstring, wide reciever Michael Jennings ruptured his Achillies' tendon and Steve Smith left with a concussion...Congratulations to Roger Federer on winning his 50th tournament on Sunday after beating American James Blake 6-1, 6-4, at the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters...And finally, it looks like some of you took my advise and headed to the theaters to catch the new movie Superbad, because it raked in $31 million to take the top spot at the box office this weekend.

The Heat is On
Chuck James had a horrible outing for the Braves giving up more homeruns (4) than innings pitched (3 2/3) in the Braves 9-3 loss. The Braves took advantage of early struggles by Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum scoring two runs in the first inning bringing them within a run, but the rookie made it through the next four innings allowing only one more run and the Giants relievers were able to keep the Braves scoreless and keep the game out of reach. The Braves welcome in the NL West leading Arizona Diamondbacks for a three game series beginning tonight. Lance Cormier will take the mound against Brandon Webb who has held his opponents scoreless for the last 33 innings. With the Mets playing the Nationals and the Phillies playing the Pirates, the Braves need to keep pace. Watch all the excitement at 7:35 PM/est on SS.

The Cup boys move from the twisting road course at Watkins Glen to the flat oval that is Michigan International Speedway. News & Notes: The Mets blew a five run lead thanks in part to their shaky bullpen and a David Wright throwing error in the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-7 win on Thursday...Jason Giambi will not face further penalties after speaking candidly to Senator Mitchell in the MLB's on going steriods investigation. Oh, and apparenlty, he's a charitable man...In other Yankees news, they lost to the Detroit Tigers 8-5 and they will not pursue ARod if he opts out of his contract...The New York Giants and Jets have secured financing for their new $1.3 billion stadium to be built in the Meadowlands. The Giants' $650 million was secured through Lehman Brothers while the Jets' was done through CitiCorp. (Why does Citi partner with crappy teams? Mets/Jets)...And finally, congratulations to first daughter Jenna Bush on her engagement to Henry Hager. It has been a crazy week in engagement news as Howie D. from the Backstreet Boys annonanced his engagement to girlfriend of six years, Leigh Boniello while two couples, House co-stars Jennifer Morrison and Jesse Spencer and The Bachelor's Andy Baldwin and Tessa Horst, called off their engagements.

Separated at Birth
Both Tim and Troy are having amazing seasons, with Troy picking up that rare unassisted triple play against the Braves earlier this season. you're out of here, again
On August 4th Alex Rodriguez became the youngest player to hit 500 homeruns. It took him 21 at bats until he was able to go deep off a pitch by Kyle Davies. Seven days later he had added three more to his career stats. A similiar fete happened to Barry Bonds, who has hit three homers since his historic 756 on August 7th including one last night against the Braves. But who knew it could effect managers? Bobby Cox broke the ejections record on Tuesday and promptly was tossed on Wednesday in the third inning with the Braves leading 2-0. But like Lou Pinella in June, the ejection only seemed to get the Braves offense in motion as they scored four runs in the sixth and were able to hold onto a 6-3 win. Tim Hudson has been outstanding over the past two months going 8-0 in 10 decisions and recording a 2.39 ERA. Add Hudson to the list of comeback players this season and maybe even NL Cy Young Award candidates. The Braves go for the series sweep on Thursday when Chuck James goes up against rookie phenom Tim Lincecum at 7:35 PM/est on TBS.

NASCAR Notes:
Dale Earnhardt, Jr. will have a totally new look for 2008, not only will he be with a new team (Hendrick Motorsports) and have a new sponsor, but after negotiations stalled, he'll have a new number. I'm guessing Junior apparel will now be 75% off.
After a six week "vacation" Steve Letarte and Chad Knaus will be back a top the pit box for thier Hendrick Motorsports cars, the #24 and #48 respectively. Both had been suspended by NASCAR for unapproved atlerations to thier cars at Sonoma earlier this season.

News & Notes: The see-saw battle in the AL Central continued on Wednesday night as Fausto Carmona pitched a gem, striking out 10 batters and enabling the Cleveland Indians to get a 5-2 win over the Detriot Tigers. Both teams are now tied in the standings and 1 game back in the Wild Card race behind the New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners who both lost on Wednesday...Oakland Raiders coach Lane Kiffin was released from the hospital, where he had been undergoing tests after developing a viral infection and returned to the practice field on Wednesday. Doctors believe the 32 year old has mono but are still awaiting final test results...Midnight on Wednesday represented the deadline for all MLB draft picks to be signed and amazingly enough all first round picks were signed. The same cannot be said in the NFL where JaMarcus Russell is the lone hold out from the 2007 draft after the Jets and Darrelle Revis came to an agreement...Country singer Kenny Chesney plans to work out with the New Orleans Saints on Friday. Chesney and Saints head coach Sean Payton have been friends since 2002...And finally, it has not been a good week for natural disaters as Hawaii was hit by Hurricane Flossie, the Gulf Coast got a visit by Tropical Storm Erin, Hurricane Dean has picked up steam in the Atlantic and Peru was hit by a massive earthquake that has killed more than 300 people.

your day in court
There was plenty of action during Tuesday night's game against the San Francisco Giants at Turner Field. Chipper Jones was almost ejected and Bobby Cox was ejected for a record breaking 132nd time. But more on that later. The Braves spent the early part of the game scoreless with John Smoltz allowing three runs in the first five innings, but following Jones bat toss and Bobby Cox ejection in the fifth, the Braves bats came alive with Mark Teixeira hitting his fifth homerun in just 12 games with the Braves to lead off the sixth. The Braves posted another three runs in the inning to go up 4-3, but the Giants bounced back tying the game in the top of the ninth. Luckily for the Braves, Chipper was still in the game in the bottom of the ninth to drill a double that scored the winning run making the score 5-4. The Braves continue their series with the Giants when Tim Hudson goes up against former Brave Russ Ortiz at 7:35 PM/est on FSN.

Word out yesterday afternoon is that Michael Vick may take a plea deal that would send the quarterback to prision but would reduce his sentence and maybe allow him to salvage his career. In other plea deal news, Tim Donaghy, the former NBA ref that was alledgedly fixing games is set to plead guily on Wednesday. Watch out Timmy, because the popo are on your tail!
UPDATE: Tim Donaghy plead guilty to two felony charges, conspiracy to engage in wire fraud and transmitting wagering information through interstate commerce. He faces a maximum of 25 years in prision.
Jose Offerman was arrested on Tuesday night after he charged the mound and hit the opposing pitcher and catcher with his bat at a minor league game. Offerman who is playing for the Long Island Ducks, was charged with second degree assualt. I'm not sure this was one of those fun minor league promotions, like Britney Spears baby safety night but I feel like it should have been. Watch out Jose, because the popo are on your tail!
News & Notes: In a game that symbolizes the AL Central race, the Tigers beat the Indians 6-2 in ten innings to retake the lead in the standings. The teams play seven more times before the season is over...Playing on the same day they lost one of their greats, Phil Rizzuto, the Yankees were hammered by the Baltimore Orioleds 12-0...Hoping not to be nagged with injury during the season, Giants WR Plaxico Burress has missed 12 days of practice with a sprained ankle suffered on August 2nd. Burress' teammate, Jeremy Shockey had a similiar injury last preseason but played through it only to be bothered by it the rest of the season...And finally, in I didn't see that coming news, a driver who was going to have his brakes checked ended up driving through the window of a tire store in Longview, WA on Monday after his brakes failed. No one was injured but maybe next time the motorist might want to call AAA for a tow to the garage for repair.

Last week we brought you Ed Helms' TV commercial, tonight we thought we'd go way back and post Zach Braff's (J.D. from "Scrubs") ESPN commercial. You've got to start somewhere right?

Another one bites the dust

NASCAR Update:
As previously reported, Joe Gibbs Racing will make an official announcement that Kyle Busch will be joining their team in the #18 for 2008. Busch will replace J.J. Yeley who has been in that car since 2006.
Kyle Petty broke his hand on Sunday after hitting it against a door in the #45 trailer. His status for Michigan is unclear.
An appeals court has sided with NASCAR in their on-going lawsuit with AT&T. Cingular, the original telecommunications brand that sponsored the #31 RCR car currently being driven by Jeff Burton, merged with AT&T following Nextel Cup's entrance into NASCAR. Part of their deal was that only current telecommunications brands would be allowed to continue sponsorship which included Cingular and Altel (which sponsored Ryan Newman's #12 Dodge). AT&T decided to rebrand itself moving away from Cingular and renaming the merged company AT&T thus forcing the name on the #31 to change. Nextel felt that went against its original agreement with NASCAR and looked to block the change, thus the lawsuit. AT&T won a preliminary judgement which has allowed its logo to appear on Burton's car thus far but with Monday's developments, AT&T may not have a leg to stand on.
News & Notes: Congratulations to Palcido Polanco on setting a new record for most consecutive games without an error (144) by a second baseman in the Tigers 7-2 loss to the Oakland A's on Monday...Yesterday, I headed up to the Bronx for an exciting game between the Yankees and the Orioles. Mariano Rivera blew his first save since April but the Yankees were able to come back off a Derek Jeter dribbler that allowed Melky Cabrera to score the winning run in a 7-6 win...Hopefully this won't stop Cheap Sexson Monday's but Richie Sexson, who has been having an off year, drove in the winning run in the Mariners 4-3 defeat of the Minnesota Twins...In other Seattle news, the new owners of the SuperSonics want to move the team to Oklahoma City. Oklahoma has played host to the New Orleans Hornets since Hurricane Katrina in 2005...And finally, Yone Minagawa, the world's oldest person has died at the age of 114.
UPDATE: Phil Rizzuto, the oldest living member of the Hall of Fame has died at the age of 89.
