Just a Reminder

To eat lots and lots of Thanksgiving food like turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing and that awesome cranberry jelly stuff out of a can, watch tons and tons of football, avoid the popo and sleep in, because that's what I'll be doing. (Less the turkey and stuffing part, not a big fan.) But one thing I won't be doing tomorrow or Friday...blogging! So come back on Monday for more sports scoop and an all new separated at birth.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

The economy is even screwing the elderly

Unlike his peers who are playing in Wii bowling tournaments in their retirement homes across the country, James Hylton has to work for his money. Apparently, that 401K isn’t delivering like he hoped it would, because the 74 year old is attempting to bring home the bacon by qualifying for the 2009 Daytona 500. Even if he finished last in his John Carter owned car, he’d still probably collect $100,000 for his troubles.

And like his brethren, he can complete this task while sitting on his behind, although, he’d be doing it in a 2 ton machine, not the customary wheelchair and would have to jerk the wheel at 200 MPH not just lightly flicking his wrist like the grey haired lady that stares at me when I go to visit my grandmother in Florida. (Beyond creepy, may I add.) Plus, as an added bonus for dear old James, Daytona is not as physically exhausting like Bristol or Dover.

But Hylton has been practicing for this moment. He spent 2008 competing full time in the ARCA RE/MAX Series and began his professional career in Nascar in 1964. To put that into perspective, not one of the 12 drivers who made the Chase in 2008 was alive to see his debut. In fact, Greg Biffle is the only driver born in the same decade!

Good luck, James! And maybe this time you should put your hard earned cash in a high interest yielding savings account or CD. The stock market is just too volatile for someone so close to retirement.

Somehow I don’t think they were talking about his hair, yet it totally fits the description.

Must be some sort of family trait

Frederick Roy, younger son of goalie Patrick Roy and brother of alleged assaulter Jonathan Roy just got himself a 15 suspension for this little dozzie on Montreal defenseman Vincent Bourgeois.

So we don’t forget Jonathan’s finest moment, here’s a You Tube clip to jog your memory.

For his actions, Jonathan got a seven game suspension and is still facing criminal charges. What a fine crop of young men you got there!

Car Wash Mogul Settles Suit

Lenny Dykstra has apparently been a busy man since hanging up his spikes. Along with writing an advise column for Thestreet.com and his car wash business, Dykstra as of late, has been spending a lot of his time dealing with various lawsuits, like the one with DDK & Co. that he recently settled. The accounting firm was claiming that the former Met had failed to pay a $128, 872 bill, which Dykstra has called “insane.”

He also recently settled with Doubledown Media, who had accused him of being a “mercurial, difficult client, who didn’t pay his debts on time.” Well they didn’t call him nails for nothing.

Of course that lingering problem with the private jet company who has been claiming that Lenny owes them $7,000 is still in limbo. “Ashtray money, bro,” was how he described the bill, yet somehow he still hasn’t paid it.

Judging from the accompanying photo that went along with this hysterical article in the New York Daily News, I’m thinking Twizzlers spokesperson should be his next gig!

Swampy mess for Alleged laptop stealer

Florida back-up QB Cameron Newton is a lot of hot water after he allegedly stole a dell laptop from a student’s dorm room and threw it out a window when campus popo came a knocking.

“[The popo] found out via the university's computer network that someone had logged onto the student-friendly Gatorlink system with the [missing] laptop under the identification "cnewton," according to the report.”

Hmm…so sneaky cnewton, I wonder who that could be?

After targeting Newton with housing the missing computer, which he had painted black and written Newton in white block lettering, the popo checked out the serial numbers on the computer.

“The officers stepped away from Newton's room to call and ask the student if the serial numbers matched, but the computer was gone when they returned to Newton's room. The computer was later found by a garbage dumpster outside of the Springs Complex, where Newton lived on the third floor.”

Apparently, Florida doesn’t allow their students to watch CSI or Law & Order. Of course they’re going to check the dumpster first for a laptop that magically went missing minutes after inspection.

Newton has been charged with felony buglary, larceny and obstruction of justice. He was also charged with one count of failure to watch procedural crime dramas and learn something and two counts of being just plain stupid in the court of PIMC.

Watch out Cam, because the popo are on your tail!

FSU: Not just a party school…who knew?

After last year’s cheating scandal I didn’t think it was possible for Florida State to produce an athlete that could become a Rhodes Scholar, but there I go again making assumptions. Safety Myron Rolle, who graduated in two and a half years with a 3.75 GPA, will arrive late to Saturday’s game against No. 25 Maryland because the New Jersey native first has to stop in Alabama for his Rhodes Scholarship interview.

"In the midst of the troubles that have gone on here at Florida State academically, there are still student-athletes doing the right thing," Rolle said. "Possibly we can move that perception from being a school that's just focused on partying and athletics."

In fact, if Rolle is selected he’ll become the third FSU student and second athlete to receive a scholarship to Oxford University in the last three years. I’m officially going to have to change my stereotype of this school, until someone gets arrested or another 80 kids get involved in a cheating scandal. Count down begins…NOW!

Myron can serve as a role model for any student athlete. He worked incredibly hard on the field but did not allow his extra circulars from interfering with his pursuit of a pre-med degree. He at one time said he wanted to graduate college in three years and beat that fete by a semester. He also plans on continuing his education, eventually becoming a doctor and opening up his own clinic in the Bahamas to help needy people. Good luck, kid!

Golf Cart Danger

With the recent news that Blues defenseman Erik Johnson has undergone surgery to fix a torn ligament in his knee, an injury suffered as a result of a golf-cart incident, PIMC decided to look into this dangerous trend in sports.

Paul Tracy
In 2006, Tracy was forced to miss the final Champ Car event after he busted his shoulder in a freak accident. Tracy was apparently making rather merry on a Las Vegas golf course “when the cart’s right front suspension failed” leading to the accident. Apparently the gang was jumping sand traps with the vehicles when the incident happened. Alcohol and stupidity do not make a good pairing, huh Paul?
(Photo: Autoracing1.com; source)

Jimmie Johnson
Three time Nascar Champion Jimmie Johnson was not immune to this latest fad. In 2006, a week after celebrating his first championship, Johnson fell off the cart and broke his wrist after “horsing around” during a celebrity golf tournament. Johnson’s injury did not affect his ability to defend his title for the next two years, but definitely caused some ribbing from teammate Jeff Gordon who probably attempted to say something street but then remembered he’s a white guy from Indiana.
(Photo: Getty Images for Nascar ; source)

Erik Johnson
Another Johnson, Blues defenseman Erik Johnson, injured his knee during a preseason golf outing in September when his foot got caught in the golf cart damaging his knee ligaments. Ouch! Johnson underwent surgery in November and will be out the remainder of the season.
(Photo: Getty Images; source)

Jason Collins
The Timberwolves Center missed eight weeks after rupturing his triceps tendon when his golf cart skidded on some wet ground and tipped over. I’m sure a few details were left out of that team statement.
(Photo: Jesse D. Garrabrant/NBAE/Getty Images ; source)

Coco Crisp
Recently traded outfielder Coco Crisp was completely blind sided by the Mariner Moose when he was rammed by a golf cart, well actually a ATV, but really aren’t they almost one in the same? Not really, well fine. Crisp was not seriously injured and the Moose was able to live another day.
(Photo: Reuters ; source)

And before you start writing these incidents off as coincidence, note that according to ScienceDaily, golf cart accidents have been on the rise in 2008. So the next time you’re riding along in a golf cart remember to stop acting like ass, because there are no doors or seat belts to prevent you from getting hurt if the cart makes a sharp turn or goes over a bump at a high rate of speed. Oh and watch out for those mascots, they’re just plain crazy!

All I have to say is take that Tony Romo!
(Photo: Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)

Best of the Rest: Matt Kenseth has re-signed with Roush Fenway Racing...Very late on this one, but Paul Menard officially moved to Robert Yates Racing on Tuesday. He'll drive the #98 car with Larry Carter serving as his crew chief and Kim Vo as his sideburns specialist.

Move over Hank

Hal Steinbrenner has officially taken over the reigns of the New York Yankees from his father George. The news doesn’t come as surprise, both Hal and his brother were appointed co-chairmen in April and George’s declining health is no secret, however I don’t know how older brother Hank will take this news. I bet he’ll continue to spew words of wisdom to anyone in the New York media within ear shot. He’ll most likely continue to make GM Brian Cashman’s life a living hell. And he’ll probably cry his little cold black heart out into that mixed drink he’s sipping down in Tampa. So basically status quo.

Hump Day Hair

Since I'll be away from my desk and thus unable to blog until next Tuesday, I decided to do Hump Day Hair a day early.

Is it wrong that when I watch intermission and post game interviews with Rangers center Brandon Dubinksy that all I want to do is comb his hair? It's getting pretty ridiculous, just look at this interview from Saturday. (Skip to about :45 - after Henrik)

That is why, I'm giving Brandon the first ever PIMC Most Needs a Comb Award.

Honorable mention goes to the Giants QB Eli Manning (Skip to :45)

I also want to give big congrats to Tim Lincecum who was voted the NL Cy Young Award winner. Congrats also go out to those who will be named AL Cy Young and MVPs for the NL and AL which will be announced later this week.

And while I'm away, don't forget to tune into "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" on Thursday at 10 PM/est on FX!

Kostopoulos hit with three game suspension

The NHL has given the Montreal Canadiens Tom Kostopoulos a three game suspension for his vicious hit on Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Mike Van Ryn during the Leafs' 6-3 Saturday night victory. Trades a Flurry

Baseball: Congrats to Geovany Soto and Evan Longoria on being named the NL and AL Rookies of the Year...A flurry of trades were made on Monday, including a blockbuster that will send Rockies outfielder Matt Holliday to the Oakland A's reportedly for Huston Street and two others, although names have not been released. The deal is expected to be finalized on Wednesday...Sources are also reporting the Scott "McTaser" Olsen and Josh Willingham have been traded by the Marlins to the Washington Nationals...The Padres have taken their $4 million offer to closer Trevor Hoffman off the table. Can you say rebuilding, San Deigo?...Meanwhile the Phillies have signed Scott Eyre to a one year, $2 million and the Royals have signed Brandon Duckworth to a one year deal...Speaking of the Phils, they'll host the Braves for MLB season opener on April 5, 2009...And finally, sad news, former Brooklyn Dodger Preacher Roe has passed away at the age of 92.

Basketball: Paul Pierce had 21, as the Celtics rallied past the Raptors, 94-87...The Blazers picked up their first road win after beating Orlando, 106-99...Dwayne Wade had 33 as the Heat edged the Nets, 99-94. Miami has opened up 3-0 at home for the first time since 1999-2000...As expected, the Nuggets have waived Antonio McDyess after recieving him in a trade with Detroit last week.

College Basketball: Duke notched their first victory of the season destroying Presbyterian, 80-49...Tennessee's freshman point guard Daniel West has been ruled academically ineligible to play...Bob Knight will return to ESPN to do broadcasts.

College Football: Here's a lesson for all you kids out there, your facebook pages can be read by ANYBODY! If that cheerleader in New England didn't help you learn that, then let Texas backup center Buck Burnette be your guide. Bucky was kicked of the team after a racial slur was found on his facebook page...There is absolutely no justification for this, two people were killed over a LSU-Alabama fued. It's just sports people!

Football: Poor management of the final seconds allowed the Cardinals to nip the 49ers, 29-24...The Jets have signed DB Ty Law to a one year deal and will start him on Thursday...Clinton Portis is 50-50 for the Redskins game against the Cowboys on Sunday...A jury has ordered the NFL Union to pay $28.1 million to retired players...You knew this was coming, Ashley N. Hockey: Congrats to Glenn Anderson, Ray Scapinello, Ed Chynoweth and Igor Larionov on being inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame...Olie Kolzig didn't have the finish he was hoping for in his return to Washington as the Caps handled the Lightning, 4-2...The Rangers battled back from a 2-0 defecit to tie the Oilers early in the third period, but lost in a shoot-out, 3-2...Still realing from the loss of Marty Brodeur, the Devils placed defenseman Paul Martin on IR with upper back soreness.

Nascar: Nascar is puzzled as to why ABC switched the conclusion of Sunday's race over to ESPN2 for viewers in the Eastern and Central time zones. Simple facts kids, apparently "America's Funniest Home Videos" brings in better ratings. (Even so this was still a stupid decision!)

Best of the Rest: Congrats to Peter Eastgate, who at just 22, became the youngest winner of the World Series of Poker.

Check this out: Last night's "How I Met Your Mother" was another great episode, although I'm a little disappointed with this latest guest stunt. For such a quality 30 minute sitcom (which are few and far between these days), there's no reason to add the terrible twosome. If you missed last nights or want to relive all the laughs, click here. Oh and please watch "Privileged" on the CW tonight at 9 PM/est!

Gary Carter gets his wish...kind of

How did I miss this one? After lobbying to take then Manager Willie Randolph’s job with the Mets earlier this year, Gary Carter has gotten himself a New York managing gig…with the Long Island Ducks. Carter had been criticized by former teammates and Mets broadcasters Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling for his open courting of his former squad, but now gets his chance to show Long Island what he’s made of. I wonder if John Rocker is still on the squad?

Dear Nascar,

I’m breaking up with you. It’s been about four weeks since I’ve even attempted to watch a race and much longer since I’ve actually watched an entire race. Your events, which used to excite me, get me to jump off my couch as I cheered on a photo-finish have now become a great weapon in my fight against insomnia. This attempt at manufacturing excitement with this stupid Chase has only benefitted Jimmie Johnson who is on the verge of his third straight title if only he can finish better than 36th at Homestead on Sunday. That’s right 36th. What happened to that neck and neck battle between multiple drivers to win a championship? Guess that disappeared faster than Kyle Busch’s right to the 2008 title.

And this horrible TV coverage. Going for the money at the expensive of the fan once again I see.

I assume Nascar’s fatale flaw has been its inability to admit its wrong doings. Because of that I refuse to commit anymore of my Sundays (or Saturday nights as the case may be) to watching your races until you start making some changes. You get rid of this Chase and bring back the real Championships. You either start making some big changes to this horrid Car of Tomorrow (Today) or you scrap it and go to something better. You get a tire manufacture that fades into the background of the race instead of becoming a deciding factor. You create a rule book that is both open to the public and establishes points, fines and suspensions for any and every violation. You allow drivers to display their emotions without muzzling them with stupid fines and points deductions. And you start admitting your mistakes and instead of pushing them under the rug, do something about them! Until then, it’s the NFL/MLB/NHL for me.

Signed,
Continually Frustrated

PS - This will not have an effect on this blog’s coverage of Nascar, just my own viewing habits.

Well Joe...

...At least you won something big this week.

Tyree Placed on IR

On the upside, David Tyree will be able to milk that incredible catch for the rest of his life. On the downside, it’s not getting him any playing time this year, especially since the Giants just placed him on IR. Care for a drink? I’m sure it’s on the house somewhere.
