Geoffrey the Gaffe: 2009 MLB Playoffs

ALCS
Yankees v. Angels
Game 1 Recap:

Yankees 4, Angels 1
CC Sabathia was the headline grabber in game 1 after a dominant performance in which he allowed four hits and one run while striking out seven batters in eight innings on the way to the game 1 victory for the Yankees. Alex Rodriguez got the scoring started with a sac fly which scored Derek Jeter in the first and Hideki Matsui added the first of his two RBIs a batter later on their way to the 4-1 victory.
WP: CC Sabathia (1-0) LP: John Lackey (0-1) S: Mariano Rivera (1)

Game 2 Recap:

Yankees 4, Angels 3
For this postseason, Mr. Disappointment is turning in Mr. Clutch as Alex Rodriguez kept the Yankees alive with a homerun in the 11th. New York then benefited from Angel second baseman Maicer Izturis’ defensive gaffe allowing them to take Game 2 at the ripe old hour of 1:07 AM. Jerry Hairston, Jr. started the 13th inning off on the right foot with a single. He later advanced to second on a Brett Gardner sacrifice. And after a Robinson Cano walk, Melky Cabrera stepped to the plate, hitting a chopper to Izturis which he threw away in an attempt to get Cano out at second. The ball skipped past shortstop Erick Aybar and rolled to Chone Figgins who botched the ball allowing Hairston to slide into home with the game winning run. It appears like the Yanks are taking advantage of a ton of errors by the opposing team this postseason.

News&Notes: LCS viewership is up 20% from 2008...Maybe it's Kate, maybe it's about damn time, but the Yankees don't really care why it's happening they are just glad A-Rod is finally producing in the postseason...The Yankees will open up Yankee Stadium for fans to view Game 3 of the ALCS which is taking place in Anaheim...Fired Irish tenor Ronan Tynan is hoping to sing "God Bless America" at Yankee Stadium again. The Kate Smith version is just fine by me.

NLCS
Dodgers v. Phillies
Game 2 Recap:

Dodgers 2, Phillies 1
Coming into the playoffs, the major question mark for the Phillies was their bullpen and not just whether Brad Lidge could recapture the magic of the 2008 playoffs, but if the entire relief staff could. On Friday, that question was answered in the eighth inning. After a brilliant performance by Pedro Martinez, the Phillies were holding onto a slim 1-0 lead. Casey Blake began the inning with a single and was replaced by Juan Pierre who moved to second off of Ronnie Belliard’s bunt single. Russell Martin hit a routine grounder to Pedro Feliz who threw over to Chase Utley who then made an errant throw which allowed Pierre to score tying the game at 1. J.A. Happ then allowed the go ahead run to score when he walked Andre Ethier a few batters later. The Dodgers’ victory tied up the series at one game a piece.
WP: Hong-Chih Kuo (1-0) LP: Chan-Ho Park (0-1) S: Jonathan Broxton (1)

Game 3 Recap:

Phillies 11, Dodgers 0
A game after their bullpen imploded, the Phillies made sure it would not happen again. Cliff Lee proved practically unhittable, allowing only three hits in eight shut-out innings. Unfortunately for the Dodgers, starter Hiroki Kuroda could not do the same allowing six earned runs in less than two innings, including a two run homer to Jayson Werth that capped off a four run first for the Phillies. Shane Victorino added a two run dinger in the eighth on the way to the Phillies’ 11-0 bashing.
WP: Cliff Lee (1-0) LP: Hiroki Kuroda (0-1)
Phillies Lead Series 2-1
Next Game: Monday, October 19 at 8:07 PM on TBS

News&Notes: With his first-inning two-run triple, Ryan Howard became the first major league player to record an RBI in his first seven playoff games in one year...Randy Wolf will have to put his fond memories of Philadelphia aside as he takes the mound for the Dodgers in Game 4...Wolf will likely being up against Joe Blanton.
