Happy Halloween

Happy Halloween
Onyx
I spent most of last night uploading pictures from my digital camera onto my computer. Then I tried to put up some cute pictures of Berry and Sonny up on the blog and it will not let me. So eventually those pictures will go up.

Also I wanted to note that I got three whole comments yesterday. If all I have to do to get people to leave comments is talk about Bo Bice and Katharine McPhee, well then look for my new section on the bottom of the page. (Just Kidding.) I do want to acknowledge the Bo Bice fans who mentioned to me that he is a pretty stand up guy and that his album has gone gold for shipments of over 500,000 copies. I have to admit, they don’t really play his music on the radio by me , so I had no clue what he was up to, thanks for keeping me informed.

NASCAR Update:
NASCAR said that they are investigating Robby Gordon for throwing debris onto the racing surface to bring out a caution. In the closing laps of Sunday’s race, a piece of rollbar padding was on the track leading to a caution which kept Chase contender, Jeff Burton two laps down and put Robby Gordon on the lead lap. Gordon finished 10th and Burton finished 13th.

Around Sports:
Baseball
Tim Wakefield will be back with the BoSox next year after they picked up his $4 million option. This will be the pitchers 13th season in Boston.

If Mike Piazza and Ryan Klesko want to come back to the San Diego Padres next season, they’ll have to do it at a below market price as the Padres decided not pick up either person’s option. They did pick up Mike Cameron and Russell Branyan’s.

Harold Reynolds is suing ESPN after being fired by the sports network over the summer. Reynolds had been with ESPN since 1996 and had been a 12 year Major League Baseball veteran.

Basketball
The Knicks and Larry Brown reached an agreement on Brown’s left over payments. Brown had signed with the Knicks for a five year, $50 million contract, but after going 23-59 last season, the Knicks let Brown go. Brown, however, was still owed $40 million. No official word on the actual amount settled on by the two parties…In other Knicks news, Jalan Rose has been released. The 33 year old veteran will reportedly still receive the $16.9 million left on his contract. Does it matter? I mean, the Knicks still have Isiah Thomas as their head coach.

Football
Sad news…Steelers part owner, Jack McGinely died of cancer on Saturday. He was 85. Maybe this will give the Steelers some motivation to win.

Popo in my Crib News:
It was a great day in the Belichick household. First, the Patriots beat the Vikings 31-7 and then Stephen Belichick, son to Pat’s coach, Bill Belichick, was sentenced to only 6 months of probation for marijuana possession. Watch out Stephen, because the popo are on your tail!

Around the World:
Roger Holyfield was shot by two stun guns on Saturday and died one day later. Holyfield was apparently carrying a Bible and yelling “I want Jesus,” when cops came upon him. They claimed that Holyfield was being combative. I’m sorry, but what part of holding a Bible seems dangerous? And in what way could his actions merrit being shot twice by a stun gun? Holyfield was only 17.

Celebrity Tid Bits:
Jacob Roloff, the youngest of the Roloff clan who star on TLC’s Little People, Big World (a minor obsession of mine) was injured on Saturday. According to people.com “[Jacob] was with a family friend at a pumpkin patch at the family’s home when a 2000-pound concrete weight dislodged from a trebuchet (a catapult-like device) built earlier this year by Matt Roloff [the father] and struck both of them.” They were rushed to a local hospital where Jacob had a procedure to elevate the swelling but is expected to be released. Get well soon, Jacob!

In so TIVOing news…Tori Spelling and her husband Dean McDermott will star in a new Oxygen reality TV show which will follow Spelling and McDermott as they open their own Bed & Breakfast. Scheduled for premiere in spring 2007, I’m sadly, so excited to see this, and I hope, it can help reunite this torn Spelling clan or be as entertaining as So NoTORIous. (via futoncritic.com)

Martha Stewart’s morning talk show has been renewed for a third season!

Jason Aldean and the Wreckers were added as performers to the 2006 CMAs. James Denton, Eva Longoria, Cameron Mathison, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Gary Allan, Billy Currington, Montgomery Gentry, Lee Ann Womack and Trisha Yearwood were also added as presenters. You can see all of these great acts on November 6th, live on ABC.

Well, Keith Urban has one thing he can smile about. His album, Be Here was certified quadruple platinum for shipments of 4 million copies. Be Here features smash hits like “Days Go By” and “Making Memories of Us.”

According to the Tennessean via gactv.com, Alison Krauss has been working with Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant on a new duet. I seriously cannot wait to hear it!
Happy Birthday wishes go out to Samaire Armstrong (26), Eddie Kay Thomas (26), Piper Perabo (30) and Vanilla Ice (38).

Random Quote: “So please, please get your facts straight before you make an ass out of yourself. Thanks.” – Anonymous to me…apparently some one was not too thrilled with my Katharine McPhee comment posted on yesterday’s blog, but not pissed off enough to leave a name. Oops. Well if you leave your name in the comments section, I’ll be sure to edit my blog to give you the credit you deserve!

It’s been fun blogging with you,

Kate

October 30, 2006

This weekend was pretty chill. I went to my dad’s and just kind of hung out. My brother brought his dog, Berry (pictures to come). She went crazy for Sonny, my chinchilla. Sonny was a little scared and started to have an asthma attack. Yikes!

NASCAR Update:
Atlanta Motor Speedway is known for its exciting finishes and it didn’t disappoint, well kind of. The big race was for third between Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Matt Kenseth. Junior was able to nose out Kenseth for third. Meanwhile, Tony Stewart had easily won over Jimmie Johnson, the highest finishing Chaser. Kasey Kahne made a mental error on lap 250 taking out himself and David Stremme and finished 38th. (Although the highlight for me was the post accident interview with Kahne.) Mark Martin was also involved in a late race accident and finished 36th. Jeff Gordon, who claims he is working on 2007, finished 6th and Denny Hamlin finished 8th.

Shout outs to Joe Nemechek and the #01 team for finishing ninth. This only the second top ten for the Army Team. Shout outs also go out to Greg Biffle and the #16 team who have had a pretty disappointing season. They were able to finish fifth.

21. Martin Truex, Jr. -1048

Congratulations go out to Jersey’s Finest, Martin Truex, Jr. for picking up his second career IROC win on Saturday at the Atlanta Motor Speedway and Tony Stewart for picking up the 2006 IROC Championship.

Giants Update:
While, the Philadelphia Eagles have lost three straight, the Giants have won four straight. They easily beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, 17-3. The Giants came out early, picking up two first half touchdowns, one a pass from Eli Manning to Plaxico Burress and the other a one yard rushing touchdown by Brandon Jacobs. The Giants were only able to pick up a field goal in the second half, but the defense made sure that wasn’t a problem. The Giants are now 5-2.

Around Sports:
Baseball
Alfonso Soriano, Jason Schmidt and Jon Wood have all filed for free agency. They join 86 other Major Leaguers who have filed for free agency in the first two days of eligibility.

Basketball
Sad news…One of the NBA’s most legendary coaches, Red Auerbach died on Saturday at the age of 89. With 938 wins, Auerbach had owned the title of the NBA’s most winningest coach until 1995 when Lenny Wilkins surpassed him. As a coach with the Boston Celtics, he won nine championships.

Football
Number 3, USC lost to Oregon State, 33-31 on Saturday and then fell to number 9 in the BSC poll. West Virginia moved up to number 3 while Ohio State and Michigan held onto the top two spots.

So maybe T.O. was right. Behind the arm of Tony Romo, the Dallas Cowboys beat the Carolina Panthers, 35-14 on Sunday Night.

Ocho Cinco, who put his new name on the back of his jersey prior to the start on Sunday's game, was unable to bring home a win for his Cincinnati Bengals as they lost to the Atlanta Falcons, 29-27. (Ocho Cinco is Chad Johsnon for those not in the know, but he will no longer respond to his given name, only his new name. I don't like to have crazy people mad at me, you never know what they'll do next, so from here on out I will only referer to him as ocho cinco.)

Hockey
The Sabres are no longer perfect, but really, who is? They lost to the Atlanta Thrashers 5-4 on Saturday.

Around the World:
Well at least they won the World Series. Otherwise, there’s little to cheer about in St. Louis after being named the most dangerous city in the country. It knocked off two time champ, Camden, NJ. Detroit, Flint, MI and Compton, CA joined in the most dangerous city fun. But if you’re more into living in a safe community, check out Brick, NJ ranked the safest “city” in the country. (How do you compare Brick, NJ population 78,000 with St. Louis?)

Celebrity Tid Bits:
BREAKING NEWS: According to tmz.com Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe have separated. I'm so in mourning right now!

The Dixie Chicks told Larry King that they have seen their audience shrink in half since 2003. Their current CD “Taking the Long Way” has sold just 1.7 million copies but did debut at number one on the Billboard chart. (via gactv.com)

Saw III took a hold on the box office on the weekend before Halloween. The sequel scared up $34.3 million. It was followed by The Departed, which brought in $9.8 million making more than $91 million since its box office debut. Last week’s champ, The Prestige fell to third with only $9.6 million with Flags of Our Fathers and Open Season rounding out the top five.

Happy Birthday wishes go out to Henry Winkler (61).

I would love to sing with her, but unfortunately all eyes are on me." - Katharine McPhee on Whitney Houston at 17th Carousel of Hope Ball Seriously, you come in second on a reality tv show and you're ego is that big. Let me help you out on where are they now, runner up on AI addition...Justin Guarini, Diana Degarmo and Bo Bice. (via people.com)

October 27, 2006

Yesterday, I went to my towns Traffic Safety Committee meeting. It was very informative. I always have concerns for pedestrian safety because, well, I’m often the pedestrian! It’s great that our town has started the Stay Alive Drive 25 campaign to teach parents and teens about the importance of driving 25 mph. Apparently, a child who is struck at 25 MPH has a 90% chance of surviving while a child who is struck by a car at 35 MPH has a 10% chance of living. A scary statistic to think about the next time your racing around town trying to get from point A to point B, you could make a fatal mistake.

My town is littered with “Keep Kids Alive, Drive 25” signs. Here’s a website where you can purchase these signs: KeepKidsAliveDrive25.org

In Theaters:
Saw III
Catch a Fire
Running with Scissors
Babel (Limited)
Death of a President
Shut Up & Listen (Limited)

Braves Update:
Hitting coach, Terry Pendleton has taken his name out the running for the Washington Nationals’ managerial opening. This comes on the heels of Joe Girardi’s announcement that he would not pursue that job. Pendleton is expected to stick with the Braves for the 2007 season.

NASCAR Update:
It’s off to Atlanta we go as the Truck and Cup Series will be racing at one of the fastest tracks on the Schedule. Only 48 points separate leader Matt Kenseth from fifth place Jeff Burton and only 99 points from Kenseth to eighth place Kasey Kahne, who has won six races this year including the March race at Atlanta.

Bass Pro Shops 500 Qualifying: Friday 10/27/06 @ 7 PM/est on Speed
Bass Pro Shops 500: Sunday 10/29/06 @ 2:30 PM/est on NBC

NASCAR Notes: Juan Pablo Montoya will make his Busch Series debut at Memphis on Saturday…According to Speed, AJ Allmendinger, who announced earlier this week that he will be racing for Red Bull Racing in the Nextel Cup Series next season, was dropped from his current Champ Car team and will not race at the Series finale on November 12th. Instead, Forsythe Racing will replace Allmendinger with 2003 Indianapolis 500 winner, Buddy Rice. Allmendinger will attempt to qualify for the Cup race for Red Bull at Atlanta on Friday.

Giants Update:
Even though the Giants have made it past their difficult opening stretch, they cannot let their guard down against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. After starting 0-4, the Bucs have won their last two games; including last weeks win against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers v. New York Giants: 1 PM/est on Fox

Giants Notes: Michael Straham is one sack away from breaking Lawrence Taylor’s official sack record for the Giants…Tiki Barber will take on his brother Rande for possibly the final time this weekend…LaVar Arrington has been placed on injured reserve after tearing his Achilles tendon against the Cowboys last Sunday…Osi Umenyiora is listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game against the Bucs while Plaxico Burress is listed as probable.

Random Quote: “L.T.’s still the greatest. There will never be another L.T. I don’t care what I do, I can never replace anyone like that. I’m just lucky enough…to be where I’m at.” – Michael Straham via Metro

Around Sports:
Baseball
Sources are speculating that San Diego Padres manager, Chris Bochy will be moving up the California Coast to San Francisco to take the Giant’s open managerial spot. Bochy took the Padres to the NLDS this season where they lost to the St. Louis Cardinals.

Basketball
Houston Rockets center, Dikembe Mutambo (gee, how old is he) got into a verbal spat with a “fan” who allegedly yelled racial slurs at him. Mutambo was able to control his emotions unlike Ron Artest, but vowed to “go straight into the stands the next time” if he was fined. Please David Stern, fine him! (via foxsports.com)

Football
Number 10 Clemson was upset by Virginia Tech 24-7.

Big Ben Roethlisberger has a pretty strong head or maybe he’s just stubborn, but either way, Ben looked good in practice on Thursday taking most of the snaps. Roethlisberger suffered a concussion on Sunday, his second in four months. Coach Bill Cowher is still reluctant to guarantee Roethlisberger the starting job on Sunday against the Oakland Raiders.

Well, at least T.O. is happy about the Dallas Cowboys quarterback change from Drew Bledsoe to Tony Romo. Others on the team including owner Jerry Jones are not so convinced. I guess we’ll have to see when the Cowboys take on the Carolina Panthers on NBC’s Sunday night game.

Hockey
With their 3-0 win over the New York Islanders on Thursday, the Buffalo Sabres stay an unbeatable 10-0.

Around the World:
According to the AFP, there’s an obesity drug that can help diabetics. Is that by reducing the excess weight that can compound the effects of diabetes, because that’s kind of obvious.

Popo in my Crib News:
Snoop Dogg was arrested on Thursday at Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, CA on suspicion of possessing marijuana (which I thought he gave up) and a hand gun. Nice. This comes on the heels of the whole police baton incident. Watch out Snoop, because the popo are on your tail!

Celebrity Tid Bits:
Nicole Richie is undergoing treatment to gain weight although her rep insists it’s not to treat an eating disorder but rather to treat the symptoms that are preventing her from gaining any weight, like not eating enough. But once again, this is not for an eating disorder. Got it? Good, because I don’t.

TV note: Las Vegas premieres Friday at 9 PM/est on NBC

Speaking of NBC, they will move 30 Rock and Scrubs to Thursday nights beginning November 30th replacing the overrated game show, Deal or No Deal. The night begins with My Name is Earl and The Office in their regularly scheduled time slots and will then be followed by Scrubs and 30 Rock. ER will continue to air during the 10-11 PM/est hour.

Eonline is reporting that NBC has ordered three more scripts of its critically acclaimed drama, Studio 60. ABC has also ordered additional scripts of The Nine, Men in Trees and Help Me Help You. Just a little reminder, Men in Trees in on tonight at 9 PM/est on ABC.

Rascal Flatts was added to the list of performers for the 2006 American Music Awards on November 12th. They’ll join other country performers, the Dixie Chicks and Carrie Underwood as well as Beyonce and the ever classy, Pussy Cat Dolls.

He may be retired but that doesn’t mean he’s slowing down. Garth Brooks released a new single last year “Good Ride Cowboy,” and he also married country superstar Trisha Yearwood. Now, according to allaboutcountry.com, Mr. Brooks is starting his own official website, garthbrooks.com. I hope he doesn’t post weird poems like Britney Spears and Rosie O’Donnell.

Happy Birthday Shout outs go to former STP frontman and current Velvet Revolver singer, Scott Weiland (39) Duran Duran hottie, Simon Le Bon (48) as well as former NASCAR driver Dick Trickle, and current NASCAR crew chief Tommy Baldwin, Jr.

Also celebrating a birthday this weekend is Julia Roberts.

It’s been fun blogging with you,

October 26, 2006

So last night I watched Oprah. I mostly flipped during Madonna’s part, because I was waiting to see the Dixie Chicks part. Now I’ll admit, I love them so my view may be biased. (So you might want to skip down if you’re not a big Dixie Chick fan.) There music is amazing, and even though I don’t always agree with what they say, their music always draws me back. With every album, they grow as musicians, and if you haven’t heard “Taking the Long Way,” I’d suggest it because it’s filled with heartfelt and beautiful music.

Anyway, I was watching it at the gym, and I don’t know if it was because I was running on the tread mill or what, but I thought I was going to cry. They show them before a concert, when they are discussing death threats sent to them. (Although I love Natalie’s response when they show her the picture of the guy who sent the death threat, “He’s kind of cute.”) But when they showed that mother trying to get her child to say “screw them” I felt so terrible for them. It was the only time that Natalie looked like she was going to cry. First of all, I thought, well that mother is total trailer trash, but then I thought how horrible for these women who basically want to go out and play music to their fans but are treated so terrible for that.

I also realize how similar in personality I am to Natalie, because I often stick my foot in mouth, so I cannot fault her for making those comments, because when you speak, sometimes you say things that maybe you shouldn’t. Not that you regret, but in a place where you should not being saying those things. Also, humor is so hard; I find that people cannot tell when I’m making a joke and when I’m being serious because I’m so sarcastic. So in conclusion, however you may feel about them personally, it should not effect how you feel about them as an artist or limit them from expressing their views, because that is what this country was founded on, a freedom of speech.

World Series Update:
It has been one crazy postseason for Major League Baseball. The Tigers/A’s game had to be moved up because of an impending snow storm in the beginning of October and there have been multiple postponements due to rain including last night’s Game 4 of the World Series in St. Louis. They’ll try to get the game in tonight, although rain is in the forecast.

Game 4
First Pitch: 8:19 PM/est on Fox
Stadium: Busch Stadium in St. Louis, MO
Scheduled Pitchers: Tigers: Jeremy Bonderman
Cardinals: Jeff Suppan

World Series Notes: The ratings have been pretty terrible for the 2006 World Series. Saturday’s Game 1 was the lowest rated Game 1 of any World Series, beating last year’s Game 1 between the Chicago White Sox and the Houston Astros. Game 2 saw an increase, but the ratings were down for Monday’s Game 3. This has led Fox to announce that beginning in 2007, Game 1 of the World Series will be on a Tuesday.

NASCAR Update:
Tony Stewart will be completing for his 11th Championship on Saturday at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Smoke already has two Nextel Cup Championships, and IRL Championship and multiple USAC Championships as well as a Karting Championship. He hopes to add an IROC Championship to that list. The Crown Royal International Race of Champions race will be broadcast live on Speed at 3 PM/est.

Kasey Kahne will run a McDonald’s paint scheme on his #9 Dodge at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sunday. Shouldn’t say, Tony Stewart have McDonald’s on his hood instead of Kahne, who looks like he passes up a few meals a week? Oh wait, Tony’s trying to get skinny (he’s already lost 12 pounds). It might be too tempting for him having to say McDonald’s all weekend.

Tommy Baldwin, Jr. was fined $5000 by NASCAR for a rules infraction by servcing the car without a uniform or helmet on. Baldwin is the Crew Chief for the #55 Napa car driven by Michael Waltrip.

Around Sports:
Baseball
Yankees slugger and all around whiney child, Gary Sheffield had his option picked up by the Yankees. He will make $13 million next year. Apparently, Sheffield thinks he can get a three year contract somewhere else. Don’t forget he missed most of this season with a wrist injury and he’s old, selfish and lost the motivation to get better. Yeah, and I’m still bitter that he left the Braves to go to of all teams, the Yankees! But we’re so better off.

Derek Jeter and Ryan Howard were named the 2006 Hank Aaron Award winners for excellence in hitting for their respective leagues.

Basketball
David Stern, commissioner of the NBA, has asked the players to leave their guns at home. David, if they leave their guns at home how can they get arrested and end up on this blog? I guess they’ll have to go back to beating up fans in the stands. (Sadly, that never gets old.)

Football
Arizona Cardinals quarterback, Matt Leinart was excused from practice on Wednesday so he could attend the birth of his first of many children, I’m sure, in Southern California. Leinart’s USC sweetheart, Brynn Cameron, gave birth to Cole Cameron Leinart on Tuesday.

The World’s Largest Cocktail Party might be gone forever. Don’t worry, the drinking will continue, it’s just the nickname of the Florida Gators/Georgia Bulldogs football game that will change if school officials get their way. They believe the name promotes bad behavior among students. Let’s be honest, those in attendance will have the same goal, get hammered early, so you can get sobered up enough to watch the game, while fans at home will continue to drink beer while relaxing on their recliner watching the game.

Hockey
Congratulations go out to Joe Sakic who collected his 1500th point, an assist in the first period of the Colorado Avalanche v. the Washington Capitals. Sakic is only the 11th player in NHL history to rack up that many points. Unfortunately, the assist was not enough as the Avalanche fell to the Capitals 5-3.

Popo in my Crib News:
Supermodel, Naomi Campbell was arrested…again. This time it was in London, but once again it was on suspicion of assault. Honey needs to join Foxy Brown at anger management class ASAP. In February of 2000, Campbell plead guilty to assault charges stemming from a 1998 incident where the model threw her cell phone at her assistant. Earlier this year, Campbell was arrested for assaulting a maid, she believed was stealing her clothes. Naomi watch out, because the popo are on your tail!

Celebrity Tid Bits:
Congratulations go out to Gretchen Wilson whose debut album, Here for the Party, has been certified quintuple platinum for sales of 5 million copies. Here for the Party features “Redneck Woman” and “When I Think About Cheatin’.”

Congratulations also go out to Keith Anderson, whose debut album, Three Chord Country and American Rock & Roll, was certified gold for sales of 500,000 copies. This album features one of my favorite songs “Every Time I Hear Your Name.”

Happy Birthday Shout outs to Keith Urban (39), Dylan McDermott (45), Rita Wilson (48), Jacyln Smith (59) and Pat Sajak (59).

Random Quote: “It feels like somebody took my heart and dropped it into a bucket of boiling tears and at the same time, somebody else is hitting my soul in the crotch with a frozen sledgehammer. And then a third guy walks in and starts punching me in the grief bone.” -Michael reflecting on the death of his former boss on The Office via ew.com. Remember The Office is on tonight at 8:30, although it’s a repeat :(

October 25, 2006

Last night as I was heading to the Subway I passed by an open storm door. (I don’t know if that’s exactly what they call it in the City, but that’s what I’m calling it.) I look down and there’s a large brown fuzzy thing, which immediately makes me jump, but after the whole snake thing, I jump a lot easier. Anyway, I realized it was cat. It looked a lot like my brother’s cat Ephee.

World Series Update:

St. Louis Cardinals v. Detroit Tigers

Game 3 Recap:
Tigers 0 3 1
Cardinals 5 7 0
W: Chris Carpenter (1-0)
L: Nate Robinson (0-1)

Game 4
First Pitch: 8:19 PM/est on Fox
Stadium: Busch Stadium in St. Louis, MO
Scheduled Pitchers:
Tigers: Jeremy Bonderman

Cardinals lead the Series 2-1

Favorite title for an article about last night’s game: “Master Craftsman” (via si.com)

NASCAR Update:
David Ragan was unable to gain clearance from NASCAR to race at Atlanta this weekend. Subsequently, Roush Racing pulled the #06 car from the entry list. Ragan should really work on getting clearance, especially since he was already announced as Mark Martin’s replacement in the #6 car next year.

Giants Update:
The Giants’ game against the Chicago Bears at the Meadowlands on November 12th was selected as the first flex-game to air this season. The game will be played at 8:30 PM instead of the original 4:05 PM starting time. As part of the new TV contract, NBC was able to pick one game in each of the final seven weeks that was not a part of the five games protected by CBS and Fox during that time. The Pittsburgh Steelers’ game against the New Orleans Saints was moved from 1 PM to 4:15PM to replace the Giants game on Fox.

Around Sports:
Baseball
Some say beggars can’t be choosers, so apparently Joe Girardi is not a beggar. The former Marlin’s manager is reportedly not interested in the Washington Nationals’ job. Then again it’s only October, we’ll see how he feels come February.

Mets first baseman, Carlos Delgado was named the 2006 winner of the Roberto Clemente Award for his excellence on and off the field.

MLB announced a new player’s deal that will go through 2011.

Basketball
In a poll of NBA GMs, most chose the San Antonio Spurs as their favorite to win another championship this season. Yeah for fans of Eva Longoria, because they’ll be seeing loads of pans to her in her blinged out jeans well into June!

If only the preseason meant something, then the undefeated Golden State Warriors would be in good shape. Alas, it means nothing!

The NBA approved the sale of the Seattle Supersonics to a group of Oklahoma City businessmen, led by Clay Bennett. Bennett maintains that his intentions are not to move the Sonics to Oklahoma City, but rather to keep them in Seattle. Although reports say that if the team cannot get a new arena built, they are out of there.

Football
The NFL approved the move of two regular season games to an international site for the 2007 season.

Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator, Maurice Carthon resigned Monday. The Browns currently are 1-6 and rank 32nd in the League in total offense.

Tennis
In embarrassing news…Kim Clijsters injured herself by tripping over her dog while playing soccer. The tennis star missed two days of practice but is not expected to miss the Gaz de France Stars.

Random Quote: "I come from a Christian household and we didn't celebrate Halloween. At church we had something called the Hallelujah Hoedown. It was like Halloween for the good kids. We'd go home afterward, close the windows and turn out the lights. We'd get our house egged every year because we didn't give out candy." - Clippers center Chris Kaman (via si.com)

Around the World:
Poor Lindsay Lohan will no longer be able to get her cocaine at 7-11. No, she’ll still be able to get her drugs, but it’s the energy drink, she’ll have to get somewhere else. 7-11 told all of its stores to remove the energy drink, Cocaine from it’s shelves because of its name.

3 year old, Robert Moore got stuck in a vending machine on Saturday in an attempt to get a Sponge Bob toy. Unfortunately for the toddler, the store employees were unable to find the key to open the machine, so Robert had to wait until the local fire department arrived. The firefighters broke a lock on the outside of the machine only to realize that there were screws on the inside that needed to be released before the boy could get out. Firefighters passed a screwdriver to the boy who was able to unlock the vending machine and get out. Next time kid, when your grandmother offers to get you the Sponge Bob toy, let her!

Popo in my Crib News:
Foxy Brown was sentenced to three years probation in conjunction with anger management classes. Now she’ll have something to talk about with Kenny Rogers and Tony Stewart, it they’re ever in the same room. The sentence stems from an August 2006 assault case, which Foxy plead guilty to. She had injured two manicurists at a New York City nail salon. Watch out Foxy, because the popo are on your tail!

Celebrity Tid Bits:
Isaiah Washington has apologized for his actions and his words stemming from an on-set incident this month. Maybe the Grey’s Anatomy star heard the rumor that ABC was looking to recast his roll as Preston Burke on the show?

Stupid server, it wouldn't let me post at lunch!

Today, I had to make a run over to the post office, so I got to sleep in and take the later train. I felt so rested. Ahhhh

World Series Update:

Stadium: Busch Stadium in St. Louis, MO

Tigers: Nate Robinson (0-0)
Cardinals: Chris Carpenter (0-0)

In 2007 we’ll see two different cars on the track. Chevy will replace their Monte Carlo SS with the Impala SS and Dodge will move from the Charger to the Avenger. And, Just when the Dodge teams were really starting to figure out the Charger. The new cars will join the Toyota Camry and the Ford Fusion.

Boris Said will run the #60 car in seven races in 2007.

Giants Update:
The Giants began this season with a tough opening six games. They played the Indianapolis Colts at home, then they went on the road playing the Philadelphia Eagles and Seattle Seahawks, came home to play the Washington Redskins, then back on the road to play the Atlanta Falcons and the Dallas Cowboys. After Monday night’s game against the Cowboys, the Giants are 4-2 and atop the standings in the NFC East. The Giants did not just beat the Cowboys; they annihilated them, 36-22. Michael Straham had two sacks to tie Lawrence Taylor as the all time sacks leader for the Giants. LaVar Arrington even came alive, hitting Cowboy’s quarterback Drew Bledsoe for a safety, only to go down for the season in the second quarter. The Giants defense combined for four interceptions, including a Sam Madison pick that took Bledsoe out of the game. He was replaced by Tony Romo who was picked off on his first throw. It was a costly win, as Arrington, Osi Umenyiora, and Tiki Barber all left the game due to injuries, although Barber was able to come back.

Giants Notes: LaVar Arrington will miss the remainder of the season with a torn Achilles tendon.

Random Quote: "I thought after the last few weeks, and the way we rushed the passer, they would've protected a little bit more than they did in the first half. I'm glad they didn't," -Michael Straham via si.com

Around Sports:
Baseball
In helping senior citizens news…The Philadelphia Phillies gave pitcher Jamie Moyer a two year $10.5 million contract extension. Moyer will turn 44 in November, but will remain four years younger than Mets first baseman, Julio Franco (if that’s his real age). Moyer is the only pitcher currently in the Majors that Barry Bonds hit a homer off of in his rookie season.

Basketball
Former lottery pick, Jay Williams was cut from the New Jersey Nets. Williams had been involved in a devastating motorcycle accident and was attempting to make a comeback this season.

Football
Seattle Seahawks quarterback, Matt Hasselbeck will miss at least three games with a strained knee ligament suffered during Seattle’s Sunday loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

Colts Safety, Mike Doss will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL. Joining Doss on the ACL injury list is the Denver Broncos left tackle, Matt Lepsis who also tore his ACL on Sunday.

Hockey
The Sabres are one win away from setting a record for the best start by a team in the NHL. Currently, they are 9-0. Just remember, it’s not how you start the season, but rather how you finish it.

Around the World:
In leave my food alone news…Researchers at Oregon State University are almost ready to release their purple tomato. The tomatoes, which can be as dark as an eggplant, will have additional nutrients that can reduce the risk of cancer. This unnatural fruit could be seen at a supermarket near you in about two years. Great, something else I can be allergic to.

Popo in my crib News:
Former Eron CEO Jeffrey Skilling was sentenced to 24 years in prison. Some of the counts Skilling was convicted of in May included fraud, conspiracy and insider trading. This is the longest sentence of any person convicted in connection to the Eron case. Watch out Jeff, because the popo are on your tail!

Wayne Derkotch pulled a gun on his son's youth football coach because he believed his son was not getting enough playing time. But what's most shocking about this is that it did not take place in Texas, but rather Pennsylvania. Derkotch was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and reckless endangerment. Watch out Wayne, because the popo are on your tail! (via si.com)

Sacramento Kings coach, Eric Musselman was arrested for a DUI on Saturday. Musselman failed three sobriety tests and had a blood alcohol level of 0.11. Watch out Eric, because the popo are on your tail!

Celebrity Tid Bits:
“Jesus, Take the Wheel” was honored as the top country song of the year by ASCAP. “Jesus” was written by Brett James, Hillary Lindsey and Gordie Sampson and allowed American Idol winner Carrie Underwood to become a bona fide country star.

Miranda Lambert, Sugarland, Little Big Town, and Josh Turner have been added to the list of performers at the 2006 CMAs in November. All four acts are nominated for the Horizon Award. Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora of Bon Jovi as well as Barbara Mandrell, Kelly Pickler, and Leanne Rimes have been added to the list of presenters.

Martina McBride will perform “Rose Garden” and “This One’s for the Girls” on Dancing with the Stars on Wednesday.

Happy Birthday wishes go out to Brian Vickers (23), Monica (26) and Dave Blanney.

October 23, 2006

This weekend was pretty crazy. Friday night, my mom and I went to see Flicka, the new Tim McGraw film. I thought it was really great for what it was, although my mom thought it was a tad overacted. It was not Friday Night Lights, but I’m pretty sure it was better than that Dakota Fannings horse movie, Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story (as it is called on imdb.com) In a minorly creepy similarity, the main character's name was Katy (obviously misspelled) and her brother was Howard. Yikes!

(Maybe she should have taken two pictures)

On Saturday, I went to Winnberies for lunch with my friends. It’s always nice to nosh on pita chips and dish about local gossip! Then Christa, Rachel and I went over to Riverside Square Mall, where I had an embarrassing celebrity encounter (more in my celeb spotting section) and then we ate at Cheesecake Factory. Although I ordered the little Cajun chicken fingers, I asked to replace the odd corn side with french fries to go with my mash potatoes, (I know it sounds odd, but if I could have a meal of just potato products I totally would) but they only gave me the fries. Apparently, the idea of mash potatoes with fries was too weird for the chef.

World Series Update:
Detroit Tigers v. St. Louis Cardinals

So the World Series began on Saturday and as the teams fly to St. Louis today, they are exactly where they started, tied. The Cardinals came out swinging on Saturday beating the Tigers 7-2., but last night Kenny Rogers and his “dirty” hand were able to hold the Cardinals to 8 scoreless innings. After a minor scare in the ninth, the Tigers were able to beat the Cardinals 3-1.

Game 3
First pitch: Tuesday, 10/24 @ 8PM on Fox
Stadium: Busch Stadium in St. Louis, MO
Scheduled Starters:
Tigers: Nate Robinson (0-0)
Cardinals: Chris Carpenter (0-0)

Series tied 1-1

NASCAR Update:
Let’s just say the Chase for the Nextel Cup has gotten a whole lot more exciting after the Subway 500 at Martinsville. Jeff Gordon dominated early, only to relinquish the lead to teammate Jimmie Johnson, who was able to bring the win home for Hendrick Motorsports. Jeff Burton had an exciting day, but probably not the kind of excitement he was looking for. He was involved in the opening caution, bumping his car into Joe Nemechek’s, damaging the front of his car and taking out the hood pins (they prevent his hood from flying up). He later left the race with a blown engine. Burton finished 42nd and moved from first to fifth in the standings. Dale Earnhardt, Jr., unfortunately left the bad excitement for the end of the race. After being frustrated with Kasey Kahne, he dove underneath the #9 car and spun himself out with under 30 laps to go. Junior had run in the top ten most of the race but had to settle with a 22nd place finish. It wasn’t bad news for all of the chasers, along with Johnson, Denny Hamlin, Gordon, Kahne, and Kevin Harvick all finished in the top ten.

Shout out to Petty Enterprises who saw both cars finish in the top ten. Bobby Labonte finished third, while Kyle Petty (yeah I had to do a double take too, when I saw the final leader board) finished tenth.

Giants Update:
Giants take on the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football, tonight at 8:30 PM/est on ESPN!

Around Sports:
Baseball
There is a strong possibility that this will be the first time the players union and owners come to terms on a new contract before hitting the deadline. As of Monday, a tentative agreement had been reached and the two sides are awaiting a written agreement.

Football
Here at popoinmycrib.com, we wondered where we would be without the NFL and their 2000 players. Completely screwed probably. We’d have nothing to write about. So thank you, Shawne Merriman, who was suspended for four games for reportedly using steroids and the other players who have either gotten arrested or reprimanded by the NFL! By taking the steroids, Merriman violated the leagues substance abuse program. He was last year’s NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year.

Hasn’t Ben Roethlisberger suffered enough? Well apparently not! The third year quarterback was knocked unconscious during the Steelers game against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. During the third quarter, Big Ben suffered a massive helmet-to-helmet hit courtesy of Falcon’s defensive end Chauncey Davis. Ben Finished the game watching from the sidelines and looked visible hurt when he put on his shirt in the locker room after the game. To add insult to injury, the defending Super Bowl champs lost in overtime 38-41 falling to 2-4. At least, they’re ahead of the 1-5 Cleveland Browns in their division. As you’ve probably read, heard, watched…many times, Roethlisberger was involved in a motorcycle accident in June.

The Oakland Raiders were finally able to put a 1 in the win column after betting the equally as horrible, Arizona Cardinals 22-9 on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which had begun the season 0-4, have won two games in a row after beating the Philadelphia Eagles. I guess Chris Simms should be updating his resume.

Hockey
There are a few job openings at the Philadelphia Flyers organization. After starting 1-6-1, GM Bob Clarke resigned and Head Coach, Ken Hitchcock was terminated. Assistant Coach, John Stevens will take over Head Coaching duties and Paul Holmgren was promoted to assistant GM.

Celebrity Tid Bits:
In the wake of Keith Urban’s Friday announcement that he had checked himself into rehab on Thursday night, the reigning CMA Entertainer of the Year has pulled out of the CMAs. We wish you the best of luck in tackling this terrible disease, Keith!

Country legend, George Jones will undergo surgery to repair a broken wrist which he injured on Friday.

In bad taste news…The Game and 7th Heaven have received full season pick ups by the CW.

The Prestige was tops at the box office this weekend, bringing in $14.8 million. It beat the new Clint Eastwood movie, Flags of Our Fathers, which came in third bringing in only $10.2 million. The rest of the top five featured The Departed, Open Season and Flicka. Marie Antionette came in eighth bringing in only $5.3 million but had the second highest per screen average. Showing on 859 screens, the Kristen Dunst movie averaged $6200 per screen. The Prestige was the only film with a higher per screen average of $6500.

Weird Al’s 12th album landed the tenth spot on the Billboard top 200 album chart. Straight out of Lynwood is his highest debuting album ever.

Happy Birthday wishes go out to Weird Al Yankovic (47), Ryan Reynolds (30) and Humpy Wheeler.

This might be the only time Weird Al will be mentioned twice on this here blog.

Celeb Spotting: Even though I work in the city, I rarely see celebrities. This weekend, when I was at the mall, I saw the cutest little girl climb out of her stroller. Then her mother grabbed her and told someone to take her. I looked at the mother and realized it was none other than Elisabeth Hasselbeck from the View. Well, the person she told to take her (imagining the little girl is her daughter Grace) was her husband Tim, who just so happens to play for the New York Giants. He is literally standing next to me, because I was walking into Houstons and he was walking towards his wife. So I turn to him and say “Shouldn’t you be in Dallas?” to which I get a blank stare. Hey the Giants are playing the Cowboys in Dallas, shouldn’t I get points for a) knowing who you are, b) knowing that your team is playing the Cowboys in Dallas, and c) not making a comment to your more famous wife. I guess he’s not used to getting recognized. I then ran into Houstons to meet my friends who were at the Cheesecake Factory.

Last night I watched The Office. I have totally gotten used to Jim in Stamford and even warmed up to a possible Jim and Karen coupling (or Kim as I like to call it), but then they go and change things up with the final two minutes of the show and now I’m all JAM, JAM, JAM. How good was pretzel day? I want pretzel day at my office. Oooo, sweet pretzels…

In Theaters:
The Prestige
Flags of Our Fathers
Flicka (which I’m going to see tonight!)
Marie Antoinette

MLB Update:
National League Championship Series

St. Louis Cardinals v. New York Mets
Game 7 recap
Cardinals 3 6 1
Mets 1 4 1
W: Randy Flores (1-0)
L: Aaron Heilman (0-1)
S: Adam Wainwright (2)

So now we move onto the World Series!

St. Louis Cardinals v. Detroit Tigers
First pitch: Saturday, October 21, 2006 @ 8:05 PM/est on Fox
Stadium: Comerica Park

World Series Notes: As if I needed another reason to watch the World Series (first two are that the Yankees and Mets will not be in it…) Bob Seger and Anita Baker will sing the national anthem during the first two games in Detroit. Here’s hoping for a game 6 when (cross your fingers) Kid Rock sings it! Although it probably will only go to four games…Did you see the National League this year?

P.S. How excited am I that the Mets lost. Hey, I love the Braves!

NASCAR Update:
We are off to Martinsville this weekend, another wild card race for our Chasers. Martinsville is the smallest track the Cup Series races on at just over a half mile. It’s known for beating and banging and people getting run over. Oh yeah, and some great verbal bar fights. I miss the days when you could reach out tag somebody, but now you get fined for that! Oh well.

Subway 500 Qualifying: Friday @ 3:30 PM/est on Speed
Subway 500: Sunday @ 12:230 PM/est on NBC

NASCAR Notes: AJ Allmendinger will race in the Red Bull car at Atlanta instead of Bill Elliot. Elliot will instead race in the #37 R&J Racing car…Speed reporter Ray Dunalp has been suspended for one week after he made some questionable remarks on Trading Paint. Dunlap is most recognized for his work as a pit reporter for the Craftsman Truck Series races on Speed.

Giants:
Are you ready for some football? The Giants will take on their divisional rivals, the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football. The Giants come off of an impressive win against the Atlanta Falcons last week.

New York Giants v. Dallas Cowboys: Monday @ 9 PM/est on ESPN

Around Sports:

Even though they were swept by the A’s in the ALDS, the Minnesota Twins are still pretty high on their manager, Ron Gardenhire. So high that they gave him a two year contract extension that will keep him in the Twin Cities until 2009. Funny, the A’s fired their manager after they were swept in the ALCS. Interesting…

Football
FYI, it’s ok to go to football stadiums this weekend, turns out the whole threat thing was a hoax. Thank goodness. No one messes with my football tailgating plans, no one!

Golf
Justin Rose was one stroke away from a record 59. Instead he had to settle with a 60 and a four stroke lead at the Funai Classic Thursday.

Random Quote: On this week's pop culture grid by si.com both Shaun Phillips of the San Diego Chargers and Lito Sheppard of the Philadelphia Eagles had the same answer to the question "Favorite TV Show," Flavor of Love. Sadly, I might agress, although totally season one over season two.

Popo in my Crib News:
About a month ago, backup punter for that football powerhouse, University of Northern Colorado, Mitchell Cozad stabbed the starting punter, Rafael Mendoza. On Thursday, Cozad was charged with attempted murder and second degree assault. If convicted, Cozad could spend 48 years in jail where hopefully he will be the starting punter for the other inmate’s sake. Oh wait, just saw a picture of Cozad, looks like it’s better for him to continue to be the back-up punter. Watch out Mitch, because the popo are on your tail!

Around the World:
The Dow closed over 12,000 yesterday. Now just where is this money coming from? How can I get a piece of it, because there are these really cute Burberry shoes I am in love with which would go great with that Marc Jacobs Hudson bag I’ve been salivating over.

LA residents who recently lost their only country station will be happy to know they will be able to listen to the sweet country music once again. AM station 540 has changed its format and will now play contemporary country music. New York and San Francisco remain the only markets without a country station. Thank goodness for CMT, GAC (which I still don’t get) and satellite radio!

Celebrity Tid Bits:
Brody Jenner confirmed to people.com that he and The Hills star Lauren Conrad are “seeing” each other. Go team LC!

Grey’s Anatomy star, T.R. Knight has confirmed to people.com that he is gay. I watched Grey’s last night and it doesn’t change my opinion of his character. He’s still adorable and I kind of still want him with Callie.

Maybe T.R. could date former American Idol contestant, R.J. Helton who also confirmed that he is gay. Both gay and both have first names composed of initials. I think we found a love connection!

Congrats to Jack & Jill star, Jamie Presley who announced her engagement to DJ Eric Cubiche. The My Name is Earl star has had quite a year with a hit TV show and that Emmy nod. I don’t know, upgrade/downgrade from Simon Rex and Kid Rock?

Happy Birthday shout outs go to John Krasinski, Snoop Dogg (35) and Tom Petty (56).

It’s been fun blogging with you,

So last night I watched Dancing with the Stars and I was absolutely shocked *SPOILER* that Mr. Belding was there cheering on Mario Lopez! I’m still waiting for Zach and Kelly to show up, but I’m sure they’re just busy. OH and what about Mama aka Jesse Spano?

MLB Playoffs:

National League Championship Series

St. Louis Cardinals v. New York Mets

Scheduled Pitchers
Cardinals: Jeff Suppan (1-0)Mets: Oliver Perez (1-0)

NASCAR Update:
Johnny Sauter’s #00 Chevy in the Busch Series has a great pit crew behind him. Yeah, so Kevin Harvick locked up the Busch Series Championship at Lowe’s Motor Speedway Friday night, but that same night, Johnny Sauter’s pit crew locked up the Checkers/Rally’s Double Drive Thru Pit Challenge. Congratulations!

Congratulations also go out to Ken Schrader who will make his 700th start in the Cup Series on Sunday.

#2 Miller Lite Dodge crew was penalized for a shock infraction discovered over the weekend at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Crew Chief Roy McCauley was not only fined $25,000 he was also suspended until November 1st. Kurt Busch was docked 50 driver points and Roger Penske was docked 50 owner points. If only this meant something. I mean, he’s not only out of the running for the Championship, he’s out of the running for the 11th place spot that Tony Stewart has pretty much locked up.

Finally, since I didn’t do my Monday rewind, I just wanted to give shout outs to Kasey Kahne, who won the Bank of America 500, his 6th win of the season and to Jeff Burton who remains in first in the Championship standings after coming in 3rd on Saturday.

Giants Update:
Rumors are swirling that Tiki Barber may retire at the end of this season. The 31 year old running back is beginning to feel his age. His business manager said that if the Giants do not win the Super Bowl this year and have a team capable of winning it next year, Tiki might return. So basically he’s retiring at the end of the season, because we are so winning it this season. You know why, I have a secret weapon. The three games I’ve worn my Eli Manning t-shirt, they’ve won, the two I haven’t, they lost. Apparently, we’re going undefeated from here on out because I’m wearing my Eli shirt on Sundays!

Around Sports:
Baseball
Since I haven’t updated in a couple of day I wanted to mention that after making it to the ALCS, Ken Macha, manager of the Oakland A’s has been fired. Apparently, he was not getting along with his players. Also, Lou Pinella has been hired to manage the Cubs. He will continue to lead the Cubs away from winning the World Series.

Football:
Former Giants head coach, Jim Fassel has been fired as offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens. Despite the Ravens having a 4-2 record, they have the 28th best offense in the league.

Popo in my Crib News:
Chicago White Sox short stop, Juan Uribe was arrested on Sunday in connection with a shooting in the Dominican Republic. Watch out Juan, because the popo are on your tail!

Around the World:
Here’s some advice, stay away from STINGRAYS! After all, it was the only animal to bring down Steve Irwin. (Is it too early for Steve Irwin jokes?) An 81 year old man was stung in the heart after a stingray somehow got onto his boat. James Bertakis is currently in critical condition at a local hospital.

In put down that oil and put on some sunscreen news…the whole in the ozone layer is at a record size. And it’s not getting smaller! Currently the hole is 10.6 million square miles large. This totally puts a damper on my trip to the South Pole.

As if I ever need another reason to love Texas…Burleson, TX (isn’t that where Kelly Clarkson’s from?) is teaching its school kids how to defend themselves against gunmen. In Texas, isn’t that pretty much everyone, I mean you can carry a concealed weapon. How amazing is that? Anyway…according to abcnews.com a group called “Response Options” has produced instructional video tapes that teach kids various options to deal with gunmen. Seriously, I think it’s good to teach kids what to do when a gunmen enters there school, it’s unfortunately become the world we live in.

Celebrity Tid Bits:
Congratulations to Dougray Scott who announced his engagement to girlfriend Claire Forlani. I loved that in the people magazine article that talked about the engagement it stated that Scott was in Mission Impossible: II and is on Desperate Housewives while Claire was in Meet Joe Black and Mallrats. First of all, Mallrats is so the better of the two films, and second of all, you forget to mention that fantastic movie with Freddie Prinze, Jr. I believe it was called Boys and Girls!

In oh no he dident news…Eric Church, singer of one my new favorite songs “Two Pink Lines,” has quit the Rascal Flatt’s Me and My Gang tour on Thursday. He will be replaced by Taylor Swift. Swift’s current single, “Tim McGraw” is off of her soon to be released debut CD. Church said he will continue to tour solo.

Dierks Bentley’s newest album, Long Trip Alone was released on Tuesday along with Vince Gill’s 4 disc CD, These Days.

Happy Birthday wishes go out to Chris Kattan (36) and Jon Favreau (40).

Random Quote: I was reading abc.com and they had a story about Cover Letters from Hell, so of course I had to read it. Apparently, Killian Advertising in Chicago has a section of their website dedicated to the horrible cover letters they receive from job applicants. Of course, it’s just pieces of the cover letter and everything is done to protect the identity of the writer, but it made me think, is my cover letter on some wall of crappy cover letters? And also, how did these people graduate college? Anyway, here’s my favorite:

Right now he is listed as day to day (detroittigers.com)…Carlos Guillen will continue to play first base for the Tigers while Sean Casey is out with a torn muscle in his right calf…Yesterday, the A’s and Tigers got to practice in the snow?!?! Early winter weather produced flurries in Detroit. Friday’s game was moved up to 4:30 after weather forecasts predicted snow showers in the evening.

NASCAR Update:
Qualifying for the Bank of America 500 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway got underway last night. Scott Riggs swept the Charlotte poles after posting a fast lap of 191.469 mph. Riggs will be joined by his teammate, Kasey Kahne, on the front row. RCR teammates, Kevin Harvick and Jeff Burton make up the third row, while last week’s winner, Brian Vickers will start 25th. Jeff Gordon will be bringing up the rear as he starts 41st. Joining Jeff in the rear of the field is Kurt Busch who qualified third but had his time disallowed after his car failed to pass inspection. Bill Elliot, who was attempting to make the first race for Red Bull racing was unable to qualify after Terry Labonte used the champions provisional to make the field.

Giants Update:
The Giants have spent all week preparing for the Atlanta Falcons even employing a fake Michael Vick. The Falcons quarterback is known for his quickness. But Giants veteran, Michael Straham, is concerned with the Giants changing their weekly game plan. Instead of trying to contain the Falcon’s quickness, Straham believes the Giants “need to shut down the running game and just [have Vick] go back there and wing it around, throw it, and see what happens.” The Giants come off a solid 19-3 win over the Redskins last week. (via nydailynews.com)

Giants Notes: Derrick Ward will miss the game against the Falcons. Carlos Emmons and Sinorice Moss are both listed as doubtful.

Giants v. Falcons: 10/15 @ 1 PM/est on Fox

Around Sports:
Baseball
The Washington Nationals are denying a report that Alfonso Soriano turned down a $70 million, five year contract. Even if you offer this guy A-Rod money, which he is not worth (although neither is A-Rod but that’s another story) I don’t see him staying in D.C.

Basketball
Former Duke basketball star, Jay Williams played in his first game since being involved in a serious motorcycle accident three years ago. Williams played in 16 minutes scoring two points in the New Jersey Nets 89-103 loss to the Indiana Pacers on Thursday.

Football
Arizona Cardinals cornerback, Antozel Rolle has been fined $12,500 by the NFL for grabbing the face mask of Kansas City Chiefs running back, Larry Johnson.

In about time news…Kurt Warner hinted at retiring at the end of this season. The 35 year old (that’s it?) quarterback is currently watching the games from the Arizona Cardinals sideline after rookie Matt Leinart’s impressive start on Sunday. Warner was in a similar situation when he was with the Giants in 2004 during Eli Manning’s rookie season.

Celebrity Tid Bits:
In very sad and shocking news…Sara Evans will pull out of Dancing with the Stars after filing for divorce from her husband, Craig Schelske on Thursday. Evans and Schelske have three children together ranging in age from 2-7. In a statement released by her publicist, Sara left the show to “give her family her full attention at this difficult time.” Sara is the reigning ACM Female Vocalist of the Year. (via people.com)

Congratulations go out to Blake Shelton whose album The Dreamer was certified gold with over 500,000 copies sold. Also being certified gold are Montgomery Gentry’s Greatest Hits: Something to be Proud of and Larry the Cable Guy’s A Very Larry Christmas.

Congratulations also go out to Tim McGraw who will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Tuesday, October 17th. This is the same day the soundtrack to Flicka is released and only three days before his new movie, Flicka hits theaters. McGraw is a platinum selling artist who also starred 2004’s Friday Night Lights. (Amazing movie and book and TV show.) (via cmt.com)

All of you single ladies out there might be excited to know that Mr. Kenny Chesney is currently not in love. (collective awwww) But the country singer is not opposed to being in love. Funny, I thought he was dating that girl from the “You Save Me” video. I guess things aren’t going so well. Anyway, Chesney will be featured in an upcoming edition of People Magazine which counts down the 25 hottest country stars.

Happy Birthday shout outs go to Nancy Karrigan, Marie Osmond and Rob Schneider.

October 12, 2006

It has been quite an eventful week for me. On Monday, as I was exiting the subway station at 34th Street, I saw a large group of people just loitering on the sidewalk. I hate that; don’t people understand it’s a sidewalk? Meant for walking, work with me people! Anyway, I also noticed the entire NYFD in the street outside of Macy’s Harold Square. I later found out there was a small fire in an elevator shaft which forced the store to evacuate.

Yesterday, one of my co-workers said that something had just crashed into a building on 72nd and York, a few blocks from where I work. I went to my boss’ office, because she has a window and we saw the smoke rising from the crash. It was kind of surreal. I spent the rest of the day scouring the internet to find out more news. I should have just gone home at 3, but that was not possible. I have to admit I was not very productive the rest of the afternoon, but I doubt anyone else was either. (more in the around sports section)

Then on my way home from the train, I got off at my usual spot and walked home in the rain…and I saw what looked like a shoelace on the sidewalk, and then it moved. It was a snake! A baby snake, but still one of my major animal fears, snakes…and sharks…but I didn’t see a shark yesterday! I was totally shocked. You don’t see snakes around where I live because it’s so suburban. I see them in Florida and it freaks me out but I’m resigned to the fact that I will see them there, but not in New Jersey.

NASCAR Update:
Cover Girl Niki Taylor and NASCAR Busch Series Driver, Burney Lamar have announced their engagement to US Weekly. Taylor has twin boys from a previous relationship and has also dated Keith Urban. So even though Burney is cute and he drives fast cars for a living, he’s still a downgrade from Urban. But for Lamar, this is a major upgrade from anyone he has previous dated I'm sure.

Good news, for Benny Parsons, according to jayski.com, the 1971 Cup Champion recently had a CT scan and it revealed no signs of a tumor. Parsons had been diagnosed with lung cancer earlier this summer.

Random Quote: "I pushed [Gordon] into the lead five times and every time I do that he complains that I'm bump-drafting him in the corners and blah, blah, blah. So I'm just not going to push him any more. There is so much grip here, my mom could drive these cars. So there wasn't no way I was going to spin anybody out. But I guess it makes Jeff Gordon a little nervous…Besides, every time I help him out, he never gives it back in return," That's why he don't have too many friends out there. I was trying to be his only friend, besides his teammates who are kind of paid to draft with him." - Dale Earnhardt, Jr. via si.com

Sad news, Yankees pitcher, Cory Lidle was killed on Wednesday when his Cirrus SR20 plane slammed into the Belaire building on E 72nd Street in Manhattan. Lidle left Teterboro Airport in New Jersey and reportedly flew around Manhattan before losing contact with flight control around 59th Street. Lidle had been traded to the Yankees from the Philadelphia Phillies in July as a part of the Bobby Abreu deal. He joined his former High School teammate, Jason Giambi in New York. Yankees Owner, George Steinbrenner released a statement expressing his condolences; “This is a terrible and shocking tragedy that has stunned the whole Yankee Organization.” Lidle was 34. He leaves behind his wife, Melanie and six year old son, Christopher. (via mlb.com)

Hockey
It’s been a bad year for defending champions. 2005 World Series Champs, the Chicago White Sox, did not make the playoffs, the Super Bowl Champion, Pittsburgh Steelers are 1-3 (not to mention all of Roethlisberger’s problems) and the Carolina Hurricanes, the last team to hoist the Stanley Cup have yet to win a game in the young 2006-2007 season. They lost to the Florida Panthers, 6-3 last night. I’d watch out if I were the Miami Heat!

Tennis
French Open winner, Rafael Nadal was upset by 690th ranked, Joachim Johansson, 6-4, 7-6 (4) at the Stockholm Open. He can beat Rodger Federer but he can’t beat a 690th ranked player? Maybe it’s the hideous manpris!

Around the World:
I’ll call him my new favorite congressman. Rep. Christopher Shays always knows exactly what to say. In defending Speaker of the House, Dennis Hastert, Shays said, “I know the speaker didn’t go over a bridge and leave a young person in the water and then have a press conference the next day,” alluding to Sen. Ted Kennedy’s little incident at Chappaquiddick. Anytime you can bring that into a conversation, you know you’ve done well. Too bad I’m not a voter in Connecticut because Rep. Shays I would totally vote for you…as long as you have similar ideals… (via cnn.com)

While I sit here enjoying 70 degree weather, the Midwest is getting pounded by winter weather including snow, sleet, and hail and other locations are experiencing blizzard like conditions. I can just hear Jim Cantore now…

Celebrity Tid Bits:
Nashville Star winner, Chris Young has the highest selling debut album of any country male solo artist this year. His self-titled debut sold 36,000 copies landing on the Billboard Country charts at number 3. Congratulations!

David Bowie will voice a character on Spongebob Squarepants. I hope your kids are a big fan because otherwise this is a major downgrade from the Simpsons.

What Happens when one of your big budget shows bits the dust early? Do you just show repeats? Or do you plug in the holes with crappy reality shows? For CBS and NBC, you move up the airdates of some of your midseason replacements. When CBS cancelled Smith, a hole developed on Wednesday nights at 10PM. CBS will start airing 3 lbs. featuring Mark Feuerstein (Good Morning, Miami) and Stanley Tucci (The Devil Wears Prada) starting on November 14th. NBC will fill the hole made when they cancelled Kidnapped with Medium starring Patricia Arquette.

Happy Birthday wishes go out to Ned Jarrett, Kirk Cameron and Hugh Jackman.

Skankees Manager, Joe Torre looks to be keeping his job next year. Rumors spread after the Skanks lost in the ALDS to the Detroit Tigers in four games. The Bronx Bombers boast a $200 million payroll and have been unable to win a World Series since 2000. Torre has been the manager of the Yankees for 11 seasons winning four World Series titles in five seasons.

In other Skankees news…The Big Unit, Randy Johnson, will undergo surgery to repair a herniated disc and Jason Giambi will have surgery to repair a torn tendon in his right wrist according to GM, Brian Cashman.

If you're heading to a Chicago White Sox game next year, note a time change. All weekday games will begin at 7:11 PM. Seriously! The time change is to promote the partnership between the White Sox and Seven Eleven.

In oops news…Scott Blauvett was arrested after security cameras caught him in nothing but his birthday suit at a government building. Celebrity Tid Bits:
Usually it’s the girls that have on set problems (think Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Catrell on Sex and the City) but today comes word that it’s the boys getting catty. Patrick Dempsy and Isiah Washington of Grey’s Anatomy fame got into a heated argument over a “difference of opinion,” according to people.com. The two star on the top rated show on ABC. Maybe Patrick Dempsy was tired of being called Dr. McDreamy?

Congratulations go out to Josh Turner and his wife, Jennifer Ford Turner who welcomed their first child, Hampton Otis Turner on Friday, October 6, 2006.

Congratulations also go out to Rascal Flatts who will perform to their one millionth ticket holder for their Me and My Gang Tour on Saturday, October 14th at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

creation known for their crossover style. Though they apparently pleased
the crowd, they were grating at times. They would have served better as
an opening act instead of having Streisand leave the stage in their

the stage to Brooke Hogan." via yahoo.com

October 9, 2006

It was a pretty crazy weekend for me. I had my Aunt and cousin come up on Saturday from Virginia. Then on Sunday, we had quite a crew over. Luckily, my family has their priorities in order and we watched the Giants game. Then we watched the Eagles game which was an awesome game, but T.O. did not live up to the hype. 3-13 on catches, I'd hope that would shut him up for a while, but I doubt it.

Premiering Tonight:
10-11
What About Brian (ABC)
Also note that How I Met Your Mother will be on at 8PM on CBS!

MLB Playoffs:
Since I didn’t update over the weekend:

American League Divisional Series:

Minnesota Twins v. Oakland A’s
A’s win series 3-0

New York Yankees v. Detroit Tigers
Tigers win series 3-1

National League Divisional Series

New York Mets v. Los Angeles Dodgers
Mets win series 3-0

San Diego Padres v. St. Louis Cardinals

Cardinals win series 3-1

This moves us onto the League Championship Series:

American League Championship Series:
Detroit Tigers v. Oakland Athletics
First Game: 10/10 @ 8:05 PM/est on Fox
Stadium: McAfee Coliseum in Oakland, CA

National League Championship Series:
St. Louis Cardinals v. New York Mets
First Game: 10/11
Stadium: Shea Stadium in Flushing, NY

Playoff Notes: Add to the increasingly long list of injured Mets, outfielder Cliff Floyd. He will miss the remainder of the playoffs with an injured Achilles tendon. Floyd joins pitchers Orlando Hernandez and Pedro Martinez on the permanent DL for 2006.

NASCAR Update:
I have to admit, I watched the Giants game and I taped Talladega, but I haven’t finished watching it, although, I know how it ends!
Hendrick Motorsports driver, Brian Vickers scored his first ever Nextel Cup win at Talladega this weekend, but it did not come without controversy. Vickers spun out Chase contender and teammate, Jimmie Johnson as well as Dale Earnhardt, Jr. on the final lap to take the checkers. They weren’t the only Chasers to be involved in crashes. On lap 136, the Big One reared its ugly little head. I say little because only 11 cars were involved. Carl Edwards said that he believed Jimmie Johnson got into him which caused a chain reaction that got Jeff Gordon, Kevin Harvick, and Denny Hamlin involved. Kevin was able to finish sixth and Denny came in 21st but Gordon was the big loser finishing 36th. Pre-race favorite, Jamie McMurray was also involved along with Casey Mears, Greg Biffle, Clint Bowyer, Sterling Marlin, Kyle Petty, and Martin Truex, Jr. The Points standings tightened up after Jeff Burton discovered a flat tire with 10 laps to go. Kasey Kahne had the top Chaser finish coming in second, Matt Kenseth and Mark Martin also finished in the top ten. Looks like Talladega lived up to the hype.

Shout out to Jersey’s finest, Martin Truex, Jr. who scored a fifth place finish, his first career top five.

Kate’s Take: May I say, that I get that Brian Vickers was hungry for a win. Kasey Kahne, who was in his rookie class, has five wins this season and six in total. Kyle Busch his younger teammate won twice last year and once this year and Denny Hamlin, the only rookie on the circuit this year with any wins swept Pocoono. Really Vickers, did you want to get your first win that way? As if you don’t have enough problems with your Hendrick teammates? Upset that the big boys won’t play with you at the playground anymore? I bet Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson can’t wait until Casey Mears becomes a teammate. Taking out Dale Jr., how you made it out of Talladega alive is beyond me; if you would have pulled this crap in the Bronx, you’d be dead. (Not that I wish that upon you, retaliation, yes, death, not so much!)

Points Standings after UAW-Ford 500
Chase for the Championship:
1. Jeff Burton LEADER
2. Matt Kenseth -6
3. Mark Martin -10
4. Kevin Harvick -33
5. Denny Hamlin -51
6. Dale Earnhardt, Jr. -106
7. Jeff Gordon -147
8. Jimmie Johnson -156
9. Kasey Kahne -185
10. Kyle Busch -185
Chase for 11th Place (points behind 11th)
11. Tony Stewart –
12. Carl Edwards -236
13. Greg Biffle -327
14. Kurt Busch -472
15. Casey Mears -564
16. Brian Vickers -587
17. Ryan Newman -628
18. Clint Bowyer -630
19. Martin Truex, Jr. -751 (Jersey’s Finest!)
20. Elliot Sadler -791

NASCAR Notes: Robby Reiser has been rumored to be moving up at Roush Racing. The current crew chief for the #17 Dewalt Ford might become General Manger for Roush Racing in 2007 after 12 years of being on top of the box for Matt Kenseth…Jeff Gordon was unhappy with Dale Earnhardt, Jr.’s bump-drafting style at Talladega, saying it’s not drafting when you hit the other person’s bumper. Maybe you should look into other career opportunities if bump-drafting bothers you so much, Jeff!

Random Quote: “It wasn't bad judgment, it was lack of talent, I just don't think he has the talent to understand what he has underneath him." –Chad Knaus, Crew Chief on the #48 on Brian Vickers via nascar.com

Giants Update:
The Giants kicker, Jay Feely made 4-5 field goals yesterday as the Giants took down the Redskins 19-3. They couldn’t have won without their defense finally showing what they are capable of. Big Blue’s defense allowed only 146 total yards and three points. Michael Straham and Osi Umenyiora both picked up their first sacks of the season. The offense wasn’t too bad either. Eli Manning went 23 of 33 passes for 256 yards and threw two touchdown passes. The Giants improved to 2-2 tied with the Dallas Cowboys for second in the NFC East. The Redskins are 2-3. The Giants take on the Atlanta Falcons next week in Atlanta.

Giants Note: Chad Morton left the game with dehydration. What's up with all of the Giants players being dehydrated during the game?…Jeremy Shockey left the game with a foot injury

Popo in my crib News:
The Bengals have another player in trouble. Receiver Chris Henry was suspended for two games for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. Henry also received a $20,000 fine. Henry is no stranger to the popo. He has been arrested four times since December. He plead guilty to marijuana and weapons possession. He still has two charges pending. Watch out Chris, because the popo and the NFL are on your tail!

Rapper Jadakiss aka Jason Philips was arrested for weapons possession after a traffic stop. This is Jada's second weapons related arrest since 2004. Watch out Jadakiss, because the popo are on your tail!

A headline that seems to repeat itself every week, Peyton Manning leads the Colts to another win. This time they beat the Titans 14-13. Could you imagine the undefeated Colts losing to the 0-4 Titans?

Here’s a stat, the Steelers without Big Ben 1-0, the Steelers with Big Ben 0-3. Although Roethlisberger did go 20-31 with 220 passing yards last night against the Chargers.

The Dolphins will have Joey Harrington as starting QB again next week while Dante Culpepper goes through a rehab like program to restore mobility to his injured knee.

Ron Wallace of Warren, RI may have the largest pumpkin ever recorded at 1,502 lbs. The current leader according to the Guinness Book of World Records is 1,469 lbs. What makes this so amazing is that many New England communities are reporting a pumpkin shortage after heavy rains and excessive heat during the summer rotted the pumpkin seeds in the ground.

Looks like its time to put down those cans of Diet Coke and pickup some unsweetened Iced Tea for those weight conscious people out there. A new study found that drinking Cola (including diet, regular and decaffeinated) can reduce bone density. Well maybe you should pick up some milk, according to the commercials from America’s Diary Farmers, three servings of milk can help reduce weight in some people, who also follow said servings with healthy meals and exercise. There’s always a catch!

In crazy baby names news…Rusty and Leann Real of Biloxi, MS welcomed a baby boy named ESPN Montana Real into the world. Leann foolishly told her husband that if they had a boy he could pick out the name. Apparently, he’s not the only cable sports channel fan to name his child ESPN, according to abcnews.com there were three other babies born with the same name in 2005. “Espn Malachi McCall of Pampa, TX, Espn Curiel of Corpus Christi, TX, and Espn Blondeel in Michigan." And you though Pilot Inspektor Lee was bad!

Celebrity Tid Bits:
The Departed was tops at the box office bringing in $27 million last weekend. It was followed by the Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning bringing in $19.1 million and last week’s champ, Open Season with $16 million. Jessica Simpson’s new flop, Employee of the Month could only bring in $11.8 million and the Guardian with $9 million round out the top five.

Last Friday, October 6th, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw celebrated their 10 year wedding anniversary. Congrats!

Happy Birthday wishes go out to Zachery Ty Bryan from Home Improvement (25) and Randy Spelling of 90210 fame (28).
