While I was sanding, polishing and painting this weekend...

Here's a wrap up of news from Labor Day weekend:

Baseball: So the Pirates clinched their 17th losing season in a row after falling to the Cubs, 4-2. Luckily for Pittsburgh fans, they have two other teams that are doing a bit better...A day after being pissed off by the Brewers walk-off celebration, Chris Carpenter and the Cardinals bounced back with a 3-0 shut out victory...The Rockies edged the Reds, 4-3...It wasn't all rosy for Colorado who lost Troy Tulowitzki early with a back strain...Meanwhile the Giants were able to keep pace in the NL Wild Card after pounding the Padres, 9-4...Manny Ramirez hit a homerun before being ejected in the Dodgers, 7-2 victory over the D'backs. He's practically an assist away from a Gordie Howe hat trick. (Or does that not translate to baseball?)...Clayton Kershaw will miss his next scheduled start after bruising his shoulder running into an auxiliary scoreboard at Dodger Stadium on Sunday. There's no need to go that hard while shagging fly balls, kid...The Rays suffered multiple losses on Monday between being swept in a doubleheader by the Yankees and then Carlos Pena's broken fingers. Pena will miss the remainder of the season...Brett Gardern made his return to the Yankees...Mark Buerhle finally got his first win since throwing a perfect game as the White Sox downed the Red Sox, 5-1...The Twins doubled up the Blue Jays, 6-3...Grady Sizemore will undergo elbow surgery putting an end to his frustrating 2009 campaign...Also shutting down for the season is the Cubs Alfonso Soriano. The outfielder will undergo surgery on his knee.

College Football: Miami topped Florida State, 38-34...Sam Bradford is maybe rethinking his decision to stay in college an extra year after injuring his shoulder in Oklahoma's 14-13 season opening loss to BYU...Suspended running back LeGarrette Blount did not practice with the Ducks on Monday even though he was allowed to under his the terms of his season-long suspension. That's not going to win you a spot on next year's roster.

Football: Five time Pro Bowl defensive lineman Richard Seymour has yet to report to the Raiders after being traded there from the Patriots. I would hold off reporting too if I was shipped to Oakland...Matthew Stafford was named the Lions starting QB...Eric Mangini knows who the Brown's starting QB is, he's just not telling. Well hopefully that doesn't apply to Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson or that could be embarassing come Sunday...Roger Goodell is going to busy after this weekend's arrests which included San Diego's Shawn Merriman who was taken in after allegedly choking and throwing girlfriend Tila Tequila to the ground. Merriman denies these allegations but it proves again that taking a shot at love with Tila will only result in an arrest and/or an unknown STD...Also begin arrested this weekend was Broncos rookie tight end Richard Quinn. Quinn's live-in girlfriend called the popo after he allegedly grabbed and shook her to the ground during an argument. You can call the Broncos the Aubrey O'Day of the NFL because they sure are one hot mess.

Hockey: The Ducks signed defenseman Steve Eminger to a two year contract...They also acquired winger Steve Weller from the Senators...The Blue Jackets have signed center Derick Brassard to a four year extension...Also receiving an extension was the Bruins coach Claude Julien...The NHL has hiked up the relocation fee to $195 million. Suddenly Phoenix doesn't seem so bad...The Penguins will meet with President Barack Obama on Thursday.

Nascar: Congrats to Kasey Kahne on winning at Atlanta on Sunday...Click here for results...And here for the updated standings...Sources are saying that Danica Patrick will race in the Nationwide and Truck Series beginning in 2010. But she isn't ready to give up her ride in the IndyCar Series just yet...Just when you think you've committed the perfect crime a surveillance camera goes and screws everything up. The popo is hoping that the release of footage from a camera at Denny Hamlin's home will help bring the 2008 Lexus LS back to its rightful owner. Watch out car thieves, because the popo are on your tail!

Best of the Rest: A number of upsets took place this weekend at the US Open including the early exits of Venus Williams, Andy Roddick and James Blake (I thought he'd make it to the round of 16 for sure). But it's a 17 year old American who is getting all the press. Melanie Oudin has advanced to the quarterfinals. Click here for the updated men's draw...And here for the women...Novak Djokovic is really working hard to get American fans to like him...Did NHRA legend John Force sandbag it so his teammate Robert Hight could become Countdown eligible?...Wisconsin has suspended freshman Diamond Taylor and Jeremy Glover after both were arrested for burglary and underage drinking. Watch out Diamond and Jeremy, because the popo are on your tail!
