Olympics Update: (BE SPOILED IF YOU WANT TO)
The redeam team is now two wins away from gold after blowing out Australia, 116-85.
The US Softball Team escaped Japan, 4-1 to move one win away from bringing home the gold.
Also advancing to the final round the Men's Beach Volleyball team of Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser who beat the Georgia 21-11, 21-13.
Baseball Update:
The Rays and Angels were like the postal service, playing on Tuesday despite Hurricane Fay's landfall in southern Florida. And like the postal service, Willy Aybar delivered in the eighth with a two run single that gave the Rays the 4-2 advantage.
B.J. Upton says he's sorry for all the mental lapses and hopes to keep them to a minimum in the future, like only allowing those lapses to occur off the field. What? This blog is based on off the field lapses. For his sake, I hope he can straighten up, he's very talented, plus there can only be one Jose Reyes.
Speaking of Jose, his team has been rolling along notching their seventh win in eight games with their 7-3 crushing of the Braves. Atlanta did hold there own until the eighth inning, when Will Ohman gave up a bases loaded two run double to Carlos Delgado that started a five run deluge that sunk the Braves. The Mets bullpen did not allow a single run in 2 2/3 innings, good news for a team that will be without Billy Wagner indefinitely.
The Phillies were able to keep pace with New York thanks to Jayson Werth's solo shot that gave Philly a 5-4 win and the Nationals their 11th straight loss. The fans let shortstop Jimmy Rollins have it after Rollins called Phillies Phans frontrunners. It's never a good idea to piss of Philly fans, they aren't even forgiving to Santa Claus.
The Red Sox cruised past the Orioles, 7-2 on a day when Baltimore welcomed its 50 millionth fan with $50,000 and Red Sox Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski underwent triple bypass surgery after experiencing chest pains.
Boston ace Josh Beckett will most likely miss his next start thanks to numbness in his right hand, while Orioles closer George Sherrill was placed on the DL with left shoulder inflammation.
Rich Harden had a well rounded night, striking out 10 Reds batters while collecting his first major league RBI in the Cubs 5-0 shut out. The win, Harden's third as a Cub, was his first at Wrigley.
Ryan Braun sat as the Brewers fell victim to a Geoff Blum three run homer that handed the Astros the 5-2 win. Ben Sheets has now lost four out of his last five starts.
Jason Isringhausen's nightmare season rolls on. The twice demoted closer will miss the remainder of the season with an elbow injury.
Adam Dunn gave the home fans something to cheer about as he launched a rocket into the seats in the Diamondbacks 7-6 victory over the Padres. With the Dodgers 8-3 loss, the D'Backs have a one game lead in the standings with plenty of more baseball to go.
After shutting out the Braves on Monday, the Giants got a rude wake-up call from Marlins ace Ricky Nolasco who pitched a brillant two hit shut out. It was the Fish's first complete game in nearly two years.
Kevin Slowely struck out a career high 12 batters, while the offense exploded in Minnesota's 13-2 shelling of the A's.
Meanwhile Clayton Richards got his first career win in the White Sox 5-0 win over the Mariners. Jim Thome and Nick Swisher connected on solo shots for the ChiSox. Chicago maintains a game lead over the Twins in the AL Central.
The umpires boycotted a conference call with Major League Baseball which was to discuss the implementation of instant replay.
Nascar Update:
Ryan Newman will be racing the #39 not the #4 for Stewart Haas in 2009.
Is Yates chasing after DEI's Paul Menard? I don't know if that would be a lateral move, or an upgrade from DEI.
California, Atlanta and Talladega have swaped dates in 2009, moving the Fontana race into the Chase and moving Atlanta to the Labor Day weekend. Can't they just get rid of the second California race altoghter?
Sam Hornish, Jr. has a new crew chief, Travis Geisler, who replaces Chris Carrier.
Recessions are hard, but who would have guessed it would have Texaco/Havoline. The company has announced it will not be sponsoring the #42 Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates entry driven by Juan Pablo Montoya and further more will be leaving Nascar altogether beginning with the 2009 season.
Sources have Subway reaching out to Carl Edwards to be a spokesperson for the chain. I doubt he has a before picture equal to Jared.

Add Ty Lawson to the needs Chauffeur list
University of North Carolina basketball player Ty Lawson pled guilty to underage drinking and driving on Tuesday, appearing in court following the completion of his community service requirement. The 20 year, who was arrested in June with a 0.03 blood alcohol level, which is under North Carolina’s legal limit of 0.08, had to be taken in because he was under 21. Tsk, tsk. The state agreed to drop the charges of violating a noise ordinance and driving with a suspended license on account of he has been such an exemplary citizen in the past few months. Oh and maybe it had something to do with him deciding to play for the Tar Heels this fall instead of [insert NBA team here].Mr. Lawson has promised he has learned his lesson and does not intend on doing this again. Because the next time he gets pulled over after he’s been drinking he’ll be at least 21! Watch out Ty, because the popo are on your tail!

Hello Mr. Cover Boy
Michael Phelps graces the cover of Sports Illustrated this week. What? I thought that underage Chinese gymnast would be all over that! The cover is a modern take on the famous Mark Spitz cover, less the tiny Speedos, which I’m ok with, and an extra gold medal around his neck, which I'm sure he's ok with.
In other Phelps news, apparently, he will not be on a Wheaties box; instead his face will be on a Kellogg’s box near you. Because nothing says healthy like Frosted Flakes. Seriously, that’s how I start my morning. What do you eat? Raisin Bran? Also he’s either dating a swimmer or model (via Hot Clicks) and his mom Debbie has been declared the mother of the Olympics. Not to shabby. And that my friend, concludes my Phelps Olympics 2008 coverage. Onto track and field or at least volleyball. Anyone else as obsessed with beach volleyball as I’ve become?

Olympic Update: (READ WITH CAUTION BECAUSE THERE ARE SPOILERS AHEAD!)
Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh are going for the gold after knocking off Brazil in the semifinals.
Shawn Johnson finally got her gold. The 16 year old Iowa native grabbed first place on the beam while teammate Nastia Liukin picked up the silver.
American Henry Cejudo took home gold in the Olympic freestyle 55-kilogram wrestling defeating Tomohiro Matsunaga of Japan.
Baseball Update:
It was good news, good news, and eh news for the Rays who edged the Angels, 6-4 on the strength of a two run homer by DH Cliff Floyd. But the big news was B.J. Upton's "mental error" which cost the Rays an out. On the other hand, closer Troy Pervical will not need to undergo surgery to fix his injured knee.
What was Tropical Storm Fay has now stregthened to a Hurricane and will threaten Tuesday's Rays/Angels game. The Angels have not left town, leaving most to feel that if Tuesday's game gets rained out, there will be a doubleheader make up on Wednesday.
Greg Maddux has been traded to the Dodgers in hopes of giving Los Angeles a push into the post season. The Padres will reportedly receive to players to be named later.
CC Sabathia is now 8-0 since joining the Brewers but their 9-3 win over the Astros could prove costly. Possible MVP candidate Ryan Braun left the game in the sixth with back problems, the same injury that had kept him out of six games last week.
Tough news for the Rangers as second baseman Ian Kinsler could be out for the rest of the season if he undergoes surgery to repair a sports hernia and at the very least, he'll be spending some time on the DL. Kinsler was batting .319 and had 26 stolen bases at the time of his injury.
Without Kinsler, the Rangers took on their former pitcher Kenny Rogers and his current team, the Tigers. It was close, but in the end Detroit was too tough, besting Texas, 8-7. Gary Sheffield hit his 493rd homerun, moving him to 25th on the all time list.
The offense is still clicking for the White Sox as they annihilated the Mariners, 13-5. Alexei Ramirez knocked a three-run shot while Carlos Quentin added his major league-leading 35th dinger in the win.
The Twins however were unable to keep pace with Chicago falling a game behind in the standings with their 3-2 loss to the A's. Justin Duchscherer left early with a hip injury giving way to Kirk Saarloos who pitched 3 2/3 inning shut out in the win for Oakland.
Curt Schilling has yet to pitch an inning in the Majors this season and says he's leaning heavily towards retirement but won't make up his mind until spring training.
Meanwhile, his current team, has really enjoyed the production their seeing from recent Red Sox Jason Bay who blasted two out of the park in their 6-3 victory over the Orioles. Jon Lester continues to impress tossing a one run, seven inning performance that was good enough to give him his 12th win of the season.
The Pirates haulted the Mets six game win streak with a 5-2 win. Rookie Steve Pearce the hit a go-ahead single in the eighth to end New York's hope of a sweep.
The Mets will go up against the Braves for the next couple of days, who are coming off of a shut-out loss to the Giants on Monday. Even worse for Atlanta, it was Barry Zito doing the pitching!
Current Brave Tom Glavine will be exmained by Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday. The 42-year old will be out for the rest of the season with a torn flexor tendon but if Dr. Andrews recommends Tommy John surgery, it will be a fair guess to say that Glavine will be throwing in the towel.
In some of the best news I read all week, Carl Pavano is in the mix for starting Saturday's game for the Yankees. Indeed, they have reached the bottom of the barrel and I'll be glued to my TV to see how it turns out!
Nascar Update:
Joe Gibbs Racing will announce their new driver for the #20 being vacated by two time Cup Series champ Tony Stewart on August 25th. And don't be too surprised when they say it's Joey Logano. Ok everyone, it's time practice our shocked face!
Austin Dillon, grandson of Nascar owner Richard Childress, will make his Nationwide Series debut at Richmond International Speedway on September 5th.
David Ragan is making a really impressive run in his sophmore season.
Nascar could be running under the lights in Atlanta as early as 2009!

Anderson had to leave the game after being sacked by Osi Umenyiora...Sexy Rexy is not giving the Bears the good vibes so they're chosing to start Kyle Orton against the Colts for their first regular season game...Tom Brady's foot is bothering him, but it's not the same injury he suffered during the AFC Championship game. It's a new injury and that's all he's saying so stop asking him!...Rafael Nadal is the new #1, unseating Roger Federer who had held that position for 235 consecutive weeks.

Look who turned 28 today
Guess who’s turning 28 today? No it's no Jonathan Vilma, silly. It's Jeremy Shockey! And don’t worry, if you weren’t in the know or forgot to send him a card or buy him a shot at the bar last night, because truth be told, I actually got tipped off to the news by cityfile.com this afternoon. So, because it’s his birthday today and because frankly, I’m still not over it, I present you this little gem from the New York Daily News. Apparently, I’m not the only one who was thinking it may not have been the best move to send Shockey to New Orleans. Of course, we’re talking preseason here so maybe I shouldn’t get ahead of myself, right?

Nadal Wins Gold, Covers New York Magazine
Just in time for the U.S. Open, Rafael Nadal graces the cover of New York Magazine. The 22-year old star talks fashion with the mag, while starring in a pretty jaw-dropping spread, if you like those shirtless photo spreads. Click here for the interview and accompanying slide show. Zach Luckett may want to think about Rehab or at least make his friends drive him home from the party
Virginia Tech has suspended receiver Zach Luckett indefinitely after being pulled over for his second DUI on Sunday. Luckett had a blood alcohol level .16, twice the legal limit when he was caught by the popo. In addition to driving under the influence, he was also charged with operating with a revoked license.The Mays Landing, NJ native (what he's from NJ!!!) was expected to start this season after playing all 14 games last year, but now the Hokies will be forced to start a true freshman (yeah none of that redshirt crap) at receiver. Sucks for them and for Zach, who should watch out, because the popo are on your tail!

Kemp to spread his seed across Italy
Shawn Kemp is coming out of retirement to play for Premiati Montegranaro in Italy. The 40 year old will go up against USA Today’s All-USA basketball selection Brandon Jennings and his Rome team on December 21 in the battle of the USA stars. Well, if you can’t get a marquee name at his peek, go for someone straight out of the wheel chair. My only real question is what are the child support laws like in Italy? Are they more lax than in America, or should a court just hold his impending salary?

A technicality gave China's He Kexin the gold medal after she and American Nastia Liukin both scored a 16.75 on the uneven bars. Kexin's execution marks were higher thus giving her the tie breaker.
The US crushed China, 9-0 in softball. This was the Americans 21st consecutive win.
Speaking of Crushing, the US Men's basketball team romped past Germany, 106-57.
Congrats to Stephanie Brown Trafton who won gold in the women's discus throw, Rafael Nadal who captured gold in the men's tennis singles with his 6-3, 7-6 (2), 6-3 defeat of Fernando Gonzalez and to the Williams sisters who brought home the gold in women's tennis doubles.
Defending Olympic champion Liu Xiang reinjured his hamstring just steps into the 110 hurdles preventing him from even getting out of the qualifying round.

Manager Joe Maddon had all the right strategy employed during the Rays 7-4 defeat of the Rangers. Maddon, who had benched star centerfielder B.J. Upton on Saturday for not running out a grounder, called for the intentional walk of the Ranger's Josh Hamilton with the bases loaded in the ninth inning bring in the second run of the inning. But Marlon Byrd produced the final out to preserve the win. And B.J. Upton, his return to the lineup came with a homer and 3 RBIs.
With Hurricane Fay looming, the Rays and Angels are in constant communication as to whether they should play their three game series in Tampa as planned or maybe have to move somewhere else.
The Yankees offense produced four homers (a solo shot, two run, three run and grand slam) on their way to a 15-6 rout of the Royals. Adding to their joy, news that Hideki Matsui could be back in the lineup by Tuesday.
Josh Beckett has had better days than the one he had on Sunday. Beckett gave up eight runs in less than three innings on the way to the Red Sox 15-4 loss to the Blue Jays.
Things remain knotted in the central after both the White Sox and Twins produced impressive victories on Sunday. Carlos Quentin continues to dazzle with his 34th homer of the season, as the Sox smashed the A's 13-1. And the Twins out hit the Mariners, 11-8 off the strength of Jason Kubel's four hit performance.
Andre Either homerun in the 12th inning not only won the game for the Dodgers, but it also put them a game ahead of the Diamondbacks in the West, who fell to the super hot Astros, 3-0.
Prior to the start of Sunday's game, the Astros retired Craig Biggio's #7.
The Mets are over their bullpen blowing a well pitched game by Johan Santana, so on Sunday, they let the ace do all the dirty work as he fired a three hit shut out in the Mets 4-0 win over the Pirates.
Speaking of the Mets shaky bullpen, they acquired Luis Ayala from the Nats for a player to be named later around the time they learned that closer Billy Wagner will be out for well more than 15 days.
The Phillies offense had just enough as Cole Hamels went 8 innings allowing just one run in Philadelphia's 2-1 win. This was Hamels first win in seven games.
Tim Lincecum tossed a gem of his own against the Braves, striking out 10 and allowing just 3 hits. Despite the numbers, Lincecum said he had trouble just throwing strikes. The only thing that seemed apparent was that the Braves had trouble scoring runs, while the Giants were just good enough in their 3-1 win.
The Braves got some bad news, Tom Glavine will be making a visit to Dr. James Andrews this week and that only means one thing and it's not good!
While most would call 2008 a disappointing year for the Indians, that doesn't mean they don't have something left in their tank. Something the Angels found out the hard way as they fell to the Tribe, 4-3. The loss gave Cleveland the series victory.
Mexican pitcher Jesus Sauceda threw a perfect game as his team crushed the Italians 12-0. It was the fifth perfect game in Little League World Series history.
Nascar Update:
Kyle Busch finished second, but that was good enough to secure him a spot in the Chase. Meanwhile, Carl Edwards notched his fifth win of the season, taking the checkers at Michigan to close the gap in the bonus points standings. It was also his second win of the weekend after landing in Victory Lane for the Nationwide Series race.
Joe Gibbs Racing could be in some serious trouble after it was discovered that there were "blatant attempts to alter post-race chassis dynamometer tests" following Saturday's Nationwide Series race in Michigan.
Darien Grubb who sat atop the pit box when Jimmie Johnson won the Daytona 500 in 2006 is said to be the leading candidate to take that position for Stewart Haas's #14, which will be driven by Tony Stewart in 2009.
UPS could appear on the hood of David Ragan's car in 2009, if the rumors are true.
News&Notes: Chad Johnson injured his shoulder as the Lions hammered the Bengals, 27-10...Luckily it's just the preseason, because those almost perfect Patriots are looking anything but, falling to the Bucs, 27-10...The Philadelphia 76ers re-signed forward Andre Iguodala to a six year contract worth a reported $80 million.

With Hurricane Fay looming, the Rays and Angels are in constant communication as to whether they should play their three game series in Tampa as planned or maybe have to move somewhere else.
The Yankees offense produced four homers (a solo shot, two run, three run and grand slam) on their way to a 15-6 rout of the Royals. Adding to their joy, news that Hideki Matsui could be back in the lineup by Tuesday.
Josh Beckett has had better days than the one he had on Sunday. Beckett gave up eight runs in less than three innings on the way to the Red Sox 15-4 loss to the Blue Jays.
Things remain knotted in the central after both the White Sox and Twins produced impressive victories on Sunday. Carlos Quentin continues to dazzle with his 34th homer of the season, as the Sox smashed the A's 13-1. And the Twins out hit the Mariners, 11-8 off the strength of Jason Kubel's four hit performance.
Andre Either homerun in the 12th inning not only won the game for the Dodgers, but it also put them a game ahead of the Diamondbacks in the West, who fell to the super hot Astros, 3-0.
Prior to the start of Sunday's game, the Astros retired Craig Biggio's #7.
The Mets are over their bullpen blowing a well pitched game by Johan Santana, so on Sunday, they let the ace do all the dirty work as he fired a three hit shut out in the Mets 4-0 win over the Pirates.
Speaking of the Mets shaky bullpen, they acquired Luis Ayala from the Nats for a player to be named later around the time they learned that closer Billy Wagner will be out for well more than 15 days.
The Phillies offense had just enough as Cole Hamels went 8 innings allowing just one run in Philadelphia's 2-1 win. This was Hamels first win in seven games.
Tim Lincecum tossed a gem of his own against the Braves, striking out 10 and allowing just 3 hits. Despite the numbers, Lincecum said he had trouble just throwing strikes. The only thing that seemed apparent was that the Braves had trouble scoring runs, while the Giants were just good enough in their 3-1 win.
The Braves got some bad news, Tom Glavine will be making a visit to Dr. James Andrews this week and that only means one thing and it's not good!
While most would call 2008 a disappointing year for the Indians, that doesn't mean they don't have something left in their tank. Something the Angels found out the hard way as they fell to the Tribe, 4-3. The loss gave Cleveland the series victory.
Mexican pitcher Jesus Sauceda threw a perfect game as his team crushed the Italians 12-0. It was the fifth perfect game in Little League World Series history.
Nascar Update:
Kyle Busch finished second, but that was good enough to secure him a spot in the Chase. Meanwhile, Carl Edwards notched his fifth win of the season, taking the checkers at Michigan to close the gap in the bonus points standings. It was also his second win of the weekend after landing in Victory Lane for the Nationwide Series race.
Joe Gibbs Racing could be in some serious trouble after it was discovered that there were "blatant attempts to alter post-race chassis dynamometer tests" following Saturday's Nationwide Series race in Michigan.
Darien Grubb who sat atop the pit box when Jimmie Johnson won the Daytona 500 in 2006 is said to be the leading candidate to take that position for Stewart Haas's #14, which will be driven by Tony Stewart in 2009.
UPS could appear on the hood of David Ragan's car in 2009, if the rumors are true.

Phelps mania makes its way to trading cards
Isn’t it funny what a few gold medals can do to your stock, like take a 25 cent trading card and make it worth about $500. Of course this isn’t an ordinary card, it’s a signed 2004 Michael Phelps trading card and just two weeks ago, it could have been yours for only 25 buck. Although if he does go onto to break Mark Spitz’s record of 7 gold medals in one Olympics, the card could escalate to $750 - $1,000. But if that’s too steep for your budget, a non-signed card is selling for about $20. The card, which was part of “Fans of the Game” collection, features a shot of Phelps with the Baltimore skyline behind and pennant of his hometown favs, the Baltimore Ravens.

The Astros on the other hand, continued their winning ways with their eighth straight victory in a form of a 7-4 romp of the Giants.
The Cubs spoiled the Braves first cycle in 21 years with a 11-7 win. Mark Kotsay delievered the cycle for Atlanta but he proved one player cannot win a ballgame even with Tom Glavine making his first start since May. The Cubs sweep of the Braves was their first ever in the regular season.
The Braves optioned Francisley Bueno to Triple-A before discovering the young pitcher had been suspended for three games for throwing a pitch in the head area of Alfonso Soriano on Wednesday. The game was Bueno's Major League debut. Well I guess you can say that it was a memorable first game.
The Chicago White Sox matched a Major League record with back-to-back-to-back-to-back homeruns in the sixth inning of their 9-2 bashing of the Royals. Jim Thome, Paul Konerko, Alexei Ramirez and Juan Uribe combined for the rare baseball fete.

As the deadline looms, 10 first round picks have yet to be signed.

Hey New Yorkers, mark your calendars, the new CitiField and the new Yankee Stadium will make their grand debuts just two days apart with the Mets opening up against the Padres on April 14th and the Yankees taking on the Indians on April 16th. Well that stinks, no home baseball on my birthday!
The US is now just 1-2 in Olympic play after falling to Cuba 5-4.

USC’s football team is a bit itchy
Apparently a rash of jock itch has attacked upwards of about 25% of the USC football team. The source of the itch is being blamed on a new pair of compression shorts. Oh sure, blame the shorts. Coach Pete Carroll says he’s never seen anything like it. And while the subject is a bit funny, a few of the players are not feeling so jovial:
"It burns," Travon Patterson said.
"Sometimes they can't walk," said tailback Stafon Johnson. "I don't know what it is, but I'm staying away from it."

Things I Learned at Oriole Park at Camden Yards
Orioles 9, Rangers 0
They got themselves a new scoreboard. Admittedly, this was actually my second trip to Camden Yards, my first coming last year in a Rockies drilling of the O’s. And I have to say, they did quite an upgrade to their scoreboard. Before they had broken lights and that weird yellow writing and now the pictures and wording are clearer and the graphics are great.
Seat location is key. I know, that seems quite obvious, but there are very few stadiums that I have been to (and honestly, that number isn’t that great) that seat location has been so important. Going back to last season when I sat upper deck but down the third baseline, I literally could not see home plate. But this year, I was seated about three sections off from directly behind home plate in the upper deck and the view was fabulous. I really got to soak in all that Camden Yards had to offer, the wonderful view of the downtown area as well as actually being able to see the players at bat. Next time I’ll have to try out the bleachers, just to see if the view is great there too!
The Orioles actually have some offense. After getting off to a quick start, the Orioles have faded back to their familiar tail end standing in the AL East. So it was nice to see the O’s kick some Ranger butt. Nick Markakis had a three run homer and Melvin Mora added a two run shot to tag onto their blowout victory. And for some good measure, Daniel Cabrera contributed a stellar six inning shut out performance to prove to me that even the worst teams have good games during a 162 game season.
The Oriole bird is creepy. Yeah, so Mr. Met is a little daunting to see at 7:30 in the morning as I am walking out of Penn Station. He’s literally just a baseball planted on top of a mascot’s body. And yeah, the Braves mascot bares a striking resemblance and is equally as awkward, but the Oriole Bird is just creepy. Its beak probably frightens small children. And the stir-up socks are not doing it any favors. Not to mention, I think mascots fall into that clown category, the one that tops everyone’s nightmares list. Expect the Phillie Phanatic, he’s pretty cool.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia is hard name for some people to pronounce. A few weeks back when I was at Citizens Bank Park to watch the Braves take on the Phillies, the girl behind me could not figure out how to pronounce Mark Teixeira’s name (obviously this came before he was traded to the Angels). No matter how many times she was corrected, or the announcer correctly pronounced his name, she just could not figure out. A similar incident happened to a couple of people behind me, who for the life of them, could not figure out how to say Salty’s name. Now I get it, he played for the Braves, so I had an inside track on it, but it’s literally spelt like it sounds kids. And if he ever gets traded to a bigger market team, I’m sure it won’t baffle as many people.
The food has gotten better. Last year I got a hot dog, because my feeling is, how badly can you screw up a hot dog? Well, pretty badly. It may have one of the worst things I have ever ingested and that includes a long line of day old goodies my grandmother used to feed us when we’d visit on the weekends. It literally tasted like I ate a bottle of salt incased in rubber. But I smiled as I ate it because I with my friends who were just so excited to show off their beloved ballpark. Well this year, I once again dove in for the hot dog and was pleasantly surprised. Granted I could have gone for some spicy mustard instead of the yellow crap that they dispense, it was still pretty good. Not Nathan’s quality but pretty good. And the fries were equally as tasty. I didn’t even need ketchup. (which is the mark of any good French fry) I was told that next time I’d have to go for the barbeque plate, because it’s the best thing at the stadium.
Yankees fans do travel. As I am heading out of the stadium, I begin to hear a Yankees chant from a level above. I hate to mention that the Yankees were not one of the teams involved in the game and that the Yankees are considered a hated rival of the Orioles so why this drunken idiot decided to yell out a “Let’s Go Yankees” chant is beyond me. I’ve gotten over going to a stadium and seeing people wearing t-shirts for their favorite team, even if that team is not playing in the game (hats were always acceptable because some people have a favorite hat they always wear), but doing a chant makes absolutely no sense to me.

Over the moon and back again
Olympic Update: (BIG SPOILERS - DON'T READ IF YOU DON'T WANT TO BE SPOILED!)
Yesterday I was pondering the age of some of the Chinese gymnasts. According to a new report, I wasn't crazy after all. According to Xinhua, the Chinese government's news agency, He Kexin was listed at just 13 years old in a story released nine months ago making her ineligible to compete int his year's games. (Gymnasts are required to be at least 16 years old in the year of the Olympics.)
American James Blake has upset former #1 ranked Roger Federer in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (2) to move into the semifinals. The loss ends Federers quest to win his first Olympic singles medal.
Spain was able to put their little photo controversy aside and beat Germany, 72-59, while the Americans rolled past Greece, 92-69.
Baseball Update:
Nomar Garciaparra came off the DL in a big way with a walk-off homerun completing a Dodgers rally that stunned the Phillies, 7-6. Philadelphia's loss coupled with a the Mets 12-0 blowout of the Nationals have things knotted up in the NL East. John Maine got a win on the same day he was activated from the DL, while the Mets offense led by recent call-up Daniel Murphy recorded eight runs in the third inning.
Over in the AL East, injuries are the name of the game. A few days after the Rays suffered a few key losses, the Red Sox placed third baseman Mike Lowell on the DL with an oblique strain and the Captian, Derek Jeter had to miss Wednesday's game against the Twins with a foot injury. The Red Sox rebounded from their loss with an 8-4 victory over the Rangers, while the Yankees fell to the Twins, 4-2. Oh and the Rays, they keep rolling along with a 3-2 win over the A's.
Oakland's Eric Chavez underwent shoulder surgery on Wednesday to repair damage in his right shoulder. He should be out for at least six months.
Josh Hamilton is expected to miss Thursday's game after his wife gave birth to their third daughter. Congrats to the Hamiltons!
CC Sabathia seems to really be enjoying his time in Milwaukee, something he can remember as he signs a big check with another team. But for now, he and the Brewers continue their hot streak crushing the Padres, 7-1. The win marks the eighth straight for the Brew Crew and makes Sabathia 7-0 since being traded.
The Cubs had a fun day as well beating the Braves a combined 18-2 in a their day/night doubleheader. The Braves paid tribute to broadcaster Skip Caray but that was about the only highlight for Atlanta who fell, 10-2 and 8-0.
Proving every team makes a run at some point in the season, the Astros won their seventh straight beating the Giants, 6-2. Houston, who scored all of their runs in a crazy sixth inning have won 15 of their last 19 games.
According to foxsports.com, Mariners Jarrod Washburn and Raul Ibanez have been claimed off waivers. The claiming teams are not yet known.
It was a thrilling Olympics opener for the US baseball team, but unfortunately it ended with the US on the wrong side of a 8-7 score. South Korea was able to rally back in the ninth to notch their first win of the games.
Instant replay could hit a stadium near you by the end of August.

Lesa France Kennedy will petition Nascar to add a second cup date to Kansas Speedway if a proposed hotel and casino addition is approved. At the earliest, the additional date could go into effect in 2010. Just what Nascar needs to double up at another track while removing a date from another.
According to a new report, Talladega Superspeedway generates an annual economic impact of $407 million for the region and state of Alabama. Goodness!
News&Notes: Pacman Jones will file for reinstatement...Blaming it all on age, Brett Favre mentioned he may have some arm fatigue. I guess that's what happens when you're 38 and you take a few months off to ponder retirement, retire and then have to get back into shape...The Cavs received Mo Williams as a part of a three team, six player trade that included Milwaukee and Oklahoma City.
Check this out: The new 90210 is set to premiere in a couple of weeks and I am very upset to learn that Tori Spelling will not be making an appearance in the remake and it's all because of money! Apparently she was not happy that Jennie Garth and Shannon Doherty would be making more money than she was offered and she backed out. Well let's be honest, who were the bigger stars in the original? I mean in the first season Donna had like three lines an episode, but by the end she was front and center. Bring on those Donna Martin graduates t-shirts! Click here for the scoop.

Yesterday I was pondering the age of some of the Chinese gymnasts. According to a new report, I wasn't crazy after all. According to Xinhua, the Chinese government's news agency, He Kexin was listed at just 13 years old in a story released nine months ago making her ineligible to compete int his year's games. (Gymnasts are required to be at least 16 years old in the year of the Olympics.)
American James Blake has upset former #1 ranked Roger Federer in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (2) to move into the semifinals. The loss ends Federers quest to win his first Olympic singles medal.
Spain was able to put their little photo controversy aside and beat Germany, 72-59, while the Americans rolled past Greece, 92-69.
Baseball Update:
Nomar Garciaparra came off the DL in a big way with a walk-off homerun completing a Dodgers rally that stunned the Phillies, 7-6. Philadelphia's loss coupled with a the Mets 12-0 blowout of the Nationals have things knotted up in the NL East. John Maine got a win on the same day he was activated from the DL, while the Mets offense led by recent call-up Daniel Murphy recorded eight runs in the third inning.
Over in the AL East, injuries are the name of the game. A few days after the Rays suffered a few key losses, the Red Sox placed third baseman Mike Lowell on the DL with an oblique strain and the Captian, Derek Jeter had to miss Wednesday's game against the Twins with a foot injury. The Red Sox rebounded from their loss with an 8-4 victory over the Rangers, while the Yankees fell to the Twins, 4-2. Oh and the Rays, they keep rolling along with a 3-2 win over the A's.
Oakland's Eric Chavez underwent shoulder surgery on Wednesday to repair damage in his right shoulder. He should be out for at least six months.
Josh Hamilton is expected to miss Thursday's game after his wife gave birth to their third daughter. Congrats to the Hamiltons!
CC Sabathia seems to really be enjoying his time in Milwaukee, something he can remember as he signs a big check with another team. But for now, he and the Brewers continue their hot streak crushing the Padres, 7-1. The win marks the eighth straight for the Brew Crew and makes Sabathia 7-0 since being traded.
The Cubs had a fun day as well beating the Braves a combined 18-2 in a their day/night doubleheader. The Braves paid tribute to broadcaster Skip Caray but that was about the only highlight for Atlanta who fell, 10-2 and 8-0.
Proving every team makes a run at some point in the season, the Astros won their seventh straight beating the Giants, 6-2. Houston, who scored all of their runs in a crazy sixth inning have won 15 of their last 19 games.
According to foxsports.com, Mariners Jarrod Washburn and Raul Ibanez have been claimed off waivers. The claiming teams are not yet known.
It was a thrilling Olympics opener for the US baseball team, but unfortunately it ended with the US on the wrong side of a 8-7 score. South Korea was able to rally back in the ninth to notch their first win of the games.
Instant replay could hit a stadium near you by the end of August.

It's almost official, but come Friday it will be, Ryan Newman will be joining Stewart Haas for the 2009 season. A press conference is scheduled for 10:30 AM on Friday. Gee, I didn't see that coming, I mean there have been like no rumors about this all season!

Apparently this photo is controversial
This photo of the Spanish Men’s Basketball team has drawn the ire of many people including the British press which were one of the first to jump on this story. The photo which ran in La Marca, a Spanish newspaper, appears to have each member of the team slanting their eyes to look like; well you don’t have to a Ph.D. to know who they’re trying to look like. And better yet, this was an advertisement for Spanish courier company, Seur, which Lakers star and Spanish player Pau Gasol said “the sponsors insisted and insisted” upon doing even when some players expressed reservations about the pose. Can you imagine how many people had to sign off this ad before it could be released? And nobody was like, this may not the best way to go. Well Seur did one thing right, I now know they exist and isn’t that the point of advertising?

Is it just me, or don’t those girls look a little under 16?
Despite the fact that I hadn’t been blogging for the past two days, I haven’t stopped my sports monitoring. In fact I’ve been in complete Olympics overload. My main obsessions being swimming, beach volleyball, synchronized diving and of course gymnastics. While watching the women’s competition, I couldn’t help but wonder; don’t those girls from China look a little young? According to those in the know, their passports check out, but aren’t they also issued by the government which pretty much borrows them from their parents at age 3 and trains them to become the most dominant in the world? Judge for yourself:
In any event, China did take home the gold medal last night, (or was it yesterday morning, that whole 12 hour time difference is driving me crazy) so congratulations to China!

Look who’s throwing out the first pitch in Arlington
I think I’ve been on my best behavior when it comes to posting about a certain former Ranger who will be playing for the Dallas Stars this season. I haven't filled this blog with any good gossip that I may have read on people.com. But when I found this photo today (which admittedly is about a week old), I kind of had to post it. He’s throwing out the first pitch at a Rangers game and they are playing the New York Yankees. And fine, I'm stretching, but to be honest, there's not much happening outside of the Olympics so this is what you get.
