heading back to Boston

Baseball Update:
Thursday's Update:
Red Sox 7, Indians 1
While Josh Beckett was tossing an eight inning, five hit, one run game, Kevin Youkalis was having an offensive explosion at the plate which included a homerum to put the Red Sox on the board first. The Indians tied the game at one with three hits and a run in the first inning, but once Beckett got into his grove there was very little the Tribe could do. Unfortunately fort he home team, once again C.C. Sabathia was bit of a wash out in the their loss.
WP: Josh Beckett (2-0) LP: C.C. Sabathia (0-2)
Indians lead 3-2

Saturday's Schedule
Indians @ Red Sox; 8 PM/est on FOX and ESPN Radio
Probable Starters
Red Sox: Curt Schilling (0-1)
Indians: Fausto Carmona (1-0)

Baseball Notes: If you were watching last night's game you may have noticed a little argument erupt between Josh Beckett and Kenny Lofton after Lofton dropped his bat assuming he had just taken ball four. He hadn't and then popped out to left...Trey Hillman may be coming back to America after managing in Japan for the past five years to take over the vacant spot left by Buddy Bell in Kansas City...The Nationals will keep their entire coaching staff for 2008...While Dusty Baker will keep Reds pitching coach Dick Pole.

Braves Update:
Brian McCann will not have to undergo ankle surgery, but he isn't opposed to Lasik surgery.

Torri Hunter is interested in playing CF for the Atlanta Braves...or the Washington Nationals.

NASCAR Update:
It's time for the final short track race of the season and the sixth race in the Chase. Jeff Gordon is pulling away from the rest of the field after back to back wins but with 500 grueling laps things could change in a heart beat. A small slip by a competitor could really ruin your day and this track is known to cause some mechanical troubles so this Chase is far from over. Watch the Subway 500 at 1 PM/est on ABC.

Reed Sorenson will be in the pink target car for breast cancer awareness this weekend at Martinsville.

Click here to see the new logo for Nascar's Nationwide Series.

More changes at DEI as its director of competition Steve Hmiel will be stepping down after being there for nine years.

Brad Coleman has left Joe Gibbs Racing to take a full time Busch ride for Brewco Motorsports in 2008.

Meet Michael Waltrip Racings development drivers Josh Wise and Michael McDowell here.

Popo in my crib News:
Sacramento Kings back up center Justin Williams is being investigated in connection to a sexual assault case. Charges have not been filed against Williams but he was given a indefinite leave of absence from the team. Watch out Justin, because the popo are on your tail!

News & Notes: South Florida was a suprise #2 pick for the first BCS poll but they wont be there for long after losing to Rutgers 30-27 on Thursday...Stanford has suspended Brook Lopez indefintitely for violating team rules. This reminds me of a kid from Penn State. I wonder what illegal activity Brookie was involved in...After dumping their coach, the Atlanta Thrashers have finally won a gam! A 5-3 over the Rangers...David Beckham's return to the Galaxy netted them a tie with the New York Red Bulls. A tie, I don't think that's why they pay you $25 million a year...The Buffalo Bills are interested in playing a game across the boarder. The Canadians have football, it's called the CFL, just ask Ricky Williams if he still remembers things from last year...Denver Broncos wide receiver Javon Walker will undergo knee surgery. Thank goodness the Rockies are doing well because it totally takes away the sting of the Broncos subpar season...The Dallas Cowboys Tank Johnson will be allowed to participate in practice...Kurt Warner practiced with the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday. But just in case he isn't good to go they always have newly signed Tim Hasselbeck...Meanwhile Vince Young did not test his injured quad during practice on Thursday but the team is opptimistic he will be able to play on Sunday. More like praying he'll be able to play...The Giants will be taking on the 49ers on Sunday at 1 PM/est on FOX. Big Blue will be looking to extend their current four game win streak. Let's go Big Blue!

It's no more Joe...Torre for the Yankees

Foxsports is reporting that Joe Torre has rejected a deal with the Yankees that would have given Joe a $2.5 million pay cut. Torre, accompanied by GM Brian Cashman and CEO Lonn Trost flew down to Tampa to take a meeting with Hal, Hank, George and Luke Skywalker Steinbrenner at the southern Yankees compound. (Is it just me or has that place had more reporters, helicopters and news cameras than Le Cirque Lodge Treatment Center with a recovering Lindsay Lohan?) Torre held the managerial post for the Yankees since 1995 giving the Bronx Bombers four titles along with 12 playoff appearances but after 10 days of will they or won't they keep him, Joe watch is officially over. Now onto replacement Joe watch! Will it be Joe Girardi (Popo's pick)? Or maybe Donny Baseball? Or maybe Hal Steinbrenner, he's awful fiesty isn't he?

He Said She Said

The budding romance between country crooner Carrie Underwood and football stud Tony Romo seems to be on the outs. Especially since Carrie was seen around New York City with Gossip Girl star Chace Crawford. While they're courtship may have been relatively private (less that appearance at the ACMs earlier this year) the two stars have opened up to the press as of late. Carrie told Entertainment Weekly that the two were headed towards a relationship but were unable to make it past his football obsession.

''At one point it seemed like that's where it was headed. But point blank, he is about football. I don't know if it's that I'm not quite his type or whatever, but I don't think he's at the point in his life where he would be willing to sacrifice football. " (source)

Don't you hate it when work gets in the way. For his part, Romo told Sports Illustrated in last weeks issue that he was lucky enough to get to know her but did not elaborate past that. While, I'm sure Tony could get a different member of the DCC every night of the week, he maybe should have stuck with Carrie.

It shouldn't suprise you that these revelations have come out only a week before Ms. Underwood's album drops (10/23). But if you're curious, click here to listen to her new album Carinval Ride. If I do say so myself, it looks like Carrie's got another winner on her hands.

What's a Girl to Wear? Part II

Almost two months ago we discussed the lack of cool female sports fan gear. Well today we're giving a couple of great options that will help support a great cause.

Seeing Bobby Labonte during Charlotte qualifying acutally got this whole idea in motion. So I had to make sure this t-shirt was posted first.

Show you're David Gilliland love in this pink shirt. And don't worry, they have a die-cast of his pink car from Charlotte here.

We actually used this hat in our original post, but it was so cute we had to put it post it again. Plus for every hat sold $1 will be given to the Susan G. Komen Fund. And if you're not too into having a white hat, we know they do get dirty, it also comes in black.

Not only is this hat pretty, but it's on $7.97 (+ shipping)!

Ok, I know what your thinking. Isn't a tie for guys? Yeah, you can get this for your dad/brother/boyfriend/husband, but you can also use it as a really cute belt. If you're not into the tie as belt idea, they also have hats for your favorite team, it's just that the image isn't exactly avialable yet!
The Giants have not only a great shirt (not the one above) but they also have pink hats and bracelets for Breast Cancer awareness.

For more information on the items listed just click on the links above.

Will Cleveland Rock the Sox?

Baseball Update:
Thursday's Schedule
Red Sox @ Indians; 8 PM/est on FOX and ESPN Radio
Probable Starters
Indians: C.C. Sabathia (0-1)
Red Sox: Josh Beckett (1-0)

Baseball Notes: Just because it was an off day didn't mean there wasn't any news coming out of Cleveland. Like Manny Ramirez's mouth running quote, "It doesn't matter how things go for you. We're not going to give up. We're just going to go and play the game, like I've said, and move on. If it doesn't happen, so who cares? There's always next year. It's not like the end of the world or something. Why should we panic?"...Getting back to the game, on Tuesday Kenny Lofton stole his 34th career post season base breaking Ricky Henderson's stolen base record...Torii Hunter is not opposed to going to the Nationals. Really?...Rick Krantiz was named the new pitching coach for the Orioles taking over for Leo Mazzone...Rockies' World Series tickets are available only on online.

NASCAR Update:
Ricky Rudd will test his shoulder during practice at Martinsville this weekend. Rudd survived the Bank of America 500 at Lowe's on Saturday night but Martinsville is a completely different animal.

Matt Kenseth who is currently sitting 12th in the points figures his luck has got to change sometime and hopefully before 2008!

Mark your calendars for November 29th. That's the date of the first ever "Stewie Awards" given to you by Tony Stewart on his Sirius Radio show. (via jayski)

Popo in my crib News:
A woman has accused New Jersey Nets guard Jason Kidd of groping her at Manhattan club Tenjune this month. This isn't the best development in an already messy divorce battle between Jason and his estranged wife Joumana. Watch out Jason, because the popo are on your tail!

University of Alabama defensive lineman Brandon Fanney pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct stemming from a July altercation outside a nightclub. Watch out Brando, because the popo are your tail!

Meanwhile, Iowa football player Anthony Bowman pleaded not guilty to charges that he used stolen credit cards on a spending spree in 2006. A trial date was set for January 28. Watch out Tony, because the popo are on your tail!

News & Notes: After six games, the Atlanta Thrashers have fired Bob Hartley after starting the season without a win...In demotion news, the Falcons have moved Joey Harrington to the bench and are replacing him this weekend with Byron Leftwich...Pitt's head coach Dave Wannstedt tore his Achilles' tendon and missed practice on Tuesday. It was probably better that he was away from the team...The NFL has reinstated Koren Robinson after a year long suspension...In I didn't even realize he wasn't playing news, David Beckham may be back with the LA Galaxy. Haven't we conclude that this experiment didn't work...World ice dancing champion Maxim Staviski has taken full blame for a fatal car accident he was involved in in August...And finally, Kobe Bryant practiced with the Lakers on Wednesday and is planning to play in their exhibition game.

Check this out: Click here to see a list of the 10 toughest coaching jobs.

Happy birthday wishes go out to Karen, born the same day Reggie Jackson hit those three homeruns!

Rusty Wallace is Out

Was just over at AOL Fanhouse and the top story was that Rusty Wallace is out at ESPN. He'll be replaced by soon to be retired (after a couple races next season) Dale Jarrett. All I can say is thank goodness! Loved Rusty in the car. Enjoyed his ego in small doses when he was racing, he always gave great sound bites, but listening to him for four hours was well...the reason why ratings are down this season. I won't blame it all on Rusty. There's the missed restarts. The fact that they show two cars hitting on pit road, and one of the announcers says there's a stalled car on pit road. Yeah, getting hit by another car will do that to you! What really drove me crazy about Rusty was his holier than thou way of broadcasting, like he'd never made a mistake in his 20 years in the sport. While other broadcasters can seemingly stay objective when their son/brother is on the track (Ned Jarrett/Darrell Waltrip), Rusty was practically berating his poor son Steven over the course of an entire Busch race. So long, Rusty it's been fun. Now get back to the 200 other business ventures you're surely working on.

UPDATE: Apparently this was a false alarm or wishful thinking depending on how you look at it. Too bad!

halloween costume ideas

With only two weeks to go until Halloween, we here at Popo in my Crib want to help you out with some costume ideas.

Individual Costumes
Keith Hernandez’s Mustache
Not only is it his trade mark, but it’s also award winning.
(Photo: Getty Images/Jim McIsaac)

Tony Stewart’s Sports Therapist
It's the perfect day to night costume. You don't even have to change out of your suit.
(Photo: Yahoo! TV)

Pacman Jones the Wrestler
It’s fun and way better than prison Pacman. Horizontal stripes don’t work on everyone and don't get me started with the idea of an orange jumpsuit.
(Photo: AP)

Greg Oden’s Orthopedist
It’s taking the old doctor costume and making it more timely.
(Photo: AP/Jason DeCrow)

Vinny Testaverde’s AARP Card
And you thought nothing good could come from a 43 year old starting quarterback. Well, he did win that game, but I’m so not a Panthers fan so I needed another reason.

Sidney Crosby’s Prom Date
It’s better than that boring 80s prom costume. Everyone other girl will be wearing that, move on.
(Photo: AP)

Kelvin Sampson’s Cell Phone
To make it more believable make the battery look like its about to go dead. He makes a lot of phone calls, you know he has to charge his phone like once every six hours.

Couple Costume
Eva Longoria and Tony Parker
There are so many options with this one. You can do basketball player Tony and courtside Eva. And it gives you another reason to bring out that bedazzler to add some rhinestones to your jeans. Or you could do red carpet Tony and Eva. But remember to do coordinating outfits for that one. Or bride and groom Tony and Eva but that's kind of boring.

Group Costumes
Kasey Kahne’s All State Girls
Just put on a pair of jeans and your favorite Kasey Kahne t-shirt and your good to go. Maybe drive up to your big party in a Dodge Durango to make it more authentic.

The Cast of the Wizard of Oz
I know your laughing, but if it’s good enough for the Yankee rookies, it’s good enough for you!

lucky number seven

Baseball Update:
Tuesday's Recap
Red Sox 3, Indians 7
The Birds Nest was all excited after Tuesday's game with Paul Byrd going five great innings until the sixth when he met Kevin Youkalis and David Ortiz's solo shots. Luckily for Byrd, the Indians already had given him a seven run lead coming into that inning so it didn't matter that the Red Sox went back to back to back for the first time ever in an ALCS game. Casey Blake started off the top of the fifth with a lead off homerun. Add a Jhonny Peralta three run dinger and a couple extra insurance runs and the Indians are now just one game away from a trip the World Series.
WP: Paul Byrd (1-0) LP: Tim Wakefield (0-1)
Indians lead 3-1

Baseball Notes: If you're wondering, there's still no Joe Torre news...but there is some Angels news. Seems they hired a new GM Tony Reagins...The Reds owner Bob Castellini wants Adam Dunn back for 2008...Alex Rodriguez was named the Sporting News' Player of the Year. Click here for a list of other winners.

NASCAR Update:
Patrick Carpentier was officially announced as the third member of Gillett Evernham Racing in 2008.

Need a reason to watch Saturday's Truck Race? Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch will play teammates for Billy Ballew Racing. Jacques Villeneuve will try his hand in the Truck Series for his second career start. And Brian Scott will make his short track Truck Series debut.

Kasey Kahne donated $500,000 to the Ronald McDonald House in Charlotte.

Popo in my crib News:
Former Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Rodgers is seeking a full pardon for his conviction of robbing a Lincoln gas station 37 years ago. Rodgers is looking to open up Jets All Sports Bar and Grill but a Nebraska law prohibits a liquor license to any business where a convicted felon owns 25% of the business or more. Rodgers was convicted of robbery in 1971 and then convicted of assault and illegal gun possession in San Diego in 1987, but the California convcictions would not affect his ability to gain a liquor license. Watch out Johnny, because the popo are on your tail!

Under his plea deal, former NBA referee Tim Donaghy had to forfeit $30,000 to the government. Donaghy admitted to being involved in a gambling ring. Watch out Timmy, because the popo are on your tail!

News & Notes: Bills player Kevin Everett can use his feet to push his wheel chair and has been able to stand with the help of a walker. A far cry for his original evaluation which said he would never walk again...the San Diego Chargers acquired receiver Chris Chambers from the Dolphins for a second round draft choice...Former Cowboy Ron Springs was hospitalized in a coma seven months after a kidney transplant...In the rich get richer news, Tiger Woods inked a deal with gatorade and he'll get his own drink...Tom Osborne will serve as interim athletic director at Nebraska...And finally, Kobe Bryant denies cleaning out his locker, he was just cleaning it. Sometimes it gets dirty.

Popo in my crib News

Eric Schnupp, Baylor's offensive line-tight ends coach, was caught having a bit too much fun at a local tavern. Seems Schnupp thought closing time would be the best time to relieve himself on the bar as employees were getting patrons to leave the bar. Well, he guessed wrong. The manager called the police who were already there "on an unrelated matter." Underage drinking perhaps? And by the way, what's Schupp doing at a college bar. This spells all kinds of wrong to me. Schnupp traveled with the team to Lawrence, KS for Baylor's loss to Kansas. Watch out Eric, because the popo are on your tail!

Rocktober continues

Baseball Update:
Monday's Recap
Red Sox 2, Indians 4
The Indians put together a techinically solid effort including three triple plays, a six and two thirds almost dominating outting by Jake Westbrook and a homerun by Kenny Lofton. Add the two runs scored in the fifth and it was easy to see why the Indians are leading the series right now.
Indians lead 2-1

Diamondbacks 4, Rockies 6
A six run fourth inning which included a three run homerun by NLCS MVP Matt Holliday broke the game wide open for the Rockies, but a three run dinger by Chris Snyder in the eighth made the game a thriller. Like they've done for the past 22 games, the Rockies put the hammer down and got themselves the franchise's firs ticket to the World Series.
Rockies win series 4-0

Random Quote: "I ran straight to Todd. He's the face of the franchise." - Troy Tulowitzki

Tuesday's Schedule
Red Sox @ Indians; 8 PM/est on FOX and ESPN Radio
Probable Starters
Indians: Paul Byrd
Red Sox: Tim Wakefield

Baseball Notes: After Saturday's game, David Ortiz feared he would be unable to play in the rest of the series due to a naggine knee injury...As the Yankees' brass meet to decide Joe Torre's future, a report says that Don Mattingly is uncofortable to follow Joe. Good because our vote is for Joe Girardi...A report says that Bill Stoneman will leave his post as Los Angeles Angels of Anahiem GM to become a team consultant...Joel Pinero signed a two year $13 million contract to stay with the St. Louis Cardinals...The Dodgers will be back on KABC -AM for the first time in 10 years...Denver based Frontier Airlines is negotiating a deal with DirecTV to air the World Series on their flights...The NLCS has drawn record low ratings for the battle between the Rockies and the D'backs. Could it be because the games start at 10 PM on the East Coast?

NASCAR Update:
Bill Elliott will be in the 21 car for the Wood Brothers at Martinsville this weekend.

Hermie Sadler will be back in a Truck for the race at Martinsville this weekend. He'll be joined by Dario Franchitti, who'll be making his Nascar debut.

Ratings for the Bank of America 500 were down 2.5% from last year's race on NBC. It's sad when you're losing to NBC's broadcasts because they were terrible!

Popo in my crib News:
Tony LaRussa's drunk driving hearing has been postponed to December 3rd. LaRussa was arrested after his car was sitting in an intersection while LaRussa was sleeping behind the wheel in March. Watch out Tony, because the popo are on your tail!

News & Notes: After a 0-2 start, the Giants have won four straight including Monday night's 31-10 win over the Falcons...The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have acquired Michael Bennett from the Kansas City Chiefs for a player to be names later...Rodger Goodell apparently thinks the US is not big enough to hold the Superbowl in the futures. Let it Rain

Baseball Update:
Saturday's Recap
Indians 13, Boston 6 in 11 innings
The so called pitchers duel between Curt Schilling and Fausto Carmona was none exsitent but the Indians bullpen did it better in their game 2 win. The 5 hour and 14 minute game went into the 11th inning where the Tribe's bats came alive to the tune of seven runs, which gives them a tie heading to Cleveland.
WP: Tom Mastny (1-0) LP: Eric Gange (0-1)
Series tied 1-1

Sunday's Recap
Diamondbacks 1, Rockies 4
Going into Sunday's game, neither team had hit a homerun, but that all changed, even with a steady rain rolling through the entire game. Matt Holliday struck first with a solo shot in the first inning giving the Rockies the 1-0 lead until Mark Reynolds tied up the game with his solo homerun in the fourth inning. The Rockies once again found a way to win when Yorvit Torrealba came up to the plate with two outs and two on and hit a monster homer putting the Rockies one game away from a sweep and the franchise's first trip to the World Series.
WP: Josh Fogg (1-0) LP: Livan Hernandez (0-1)

NASCAR Update:
It's two in a row for Jeff Gordon after winning at Lowe's Motor Speedway on Saturday night at the Bank of America 500, extending his points lead. A late race crash involving Ryan Newman put the race intp extras and some doubt in the minds of Gordon and his crew as to whether they had enough gas to get to the finish. But he did, breaking a streak of DNFs at Lowe's dating back to 2004. For only the second time during the Chase, the top five was populated with only chasers including teammates Clint Bowyer and Jeff Burton, Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards.
Race Results Points Standings

With only two rides and three drivers, Haas CNC Racing has yet to announce which driver, Johnny Sauter or Jeff Green will be the odd man out. This is like "The Office" episode when it's Halloween and Michael has to fire someone and he's kind of hoping someone will quit. Well, Sauter told reporters he has been given permission to look else where. Maybe Cumberland Mills?

Michael Watlrip Racing announced David Reutimann and Dale Jarrett will share racing duties in the #44 UPS Toyota in 2008. Waltrip has also added a partner, Robert Kauffman, a founder of Fortress Investment Group. The company will be renamed Michael Waltrip Racing Holdings, LLC.

Popo in my crib News:
22 people were arrested on a variety of charges after Kentucky's win over LSU on Saturday. Watch out drunken fans, because the popo are on your tail!

Three people were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct after throwing garbage onto the field in Alabama's 27-24 win over Ole Miss. The game was held in Mississippi. Watch out garbage throwers, because the popo are on your tail!

News & Notes: There's one less undefeated team in the NFL after Dallas lost to the Patriots 48-27 on Sunday...Meanwhile there is one less winless team as the Saints finally won a game 28-17 over the Seahawks...LaDainian Tomlinson was back to normal with his 4 TDs and 198 yards in the Chargers 28-14 win over the Raiders...A week ago Vinny Testaverde was sitting on his couch watching football, but on Sunday he was on the field winning the game for the Carolina Panthers 25-10 over the Cardinals...It was another wild weekend in college football with #1 LSU and #2 Cal losing which lead to Ohio States' #1 ranking in the BSC followed by South Florida?...AP poll was released too...Talk about crazy, Boise State scored 69 points in their 4OT win over Nevada...Even though he lost in Russia to Sultan Ibragimov over the weekend, Evander Holyfield is not ready to hang up his gloves...And finally, Jalen Rose has paid for a billboard that honors his Michigan fab five teammates. The Billboard has a picture of five jerseys with Chris Webber, Juwan Howard, Jimmy King, Ray Jackson and Roses' number and last names on them.

Baseballs Young Guns

If you haven’t noticed already, there are a bunch of future superstars who are making a name for themselves in the Playoffs. Here are a couple of names you’ll be hearing a lot in the coming years.

New York Yankees
They may be out of it, but they do have a bunch of star young pitchers that made their debut this year.

Joba Chamberlain
He’s so good they made rules for him so as to not burn out his arm early. These rules included not being allowed to enter a game in the middle of inning; not being able to pitch on consecutive days; taking two days off if he pitched two innings; not being allowed to warm up and then sit down and then warm up again… Those rules went out the window when they got to the post season. Even though he had a small issue with a few bugs during game 2 in Cleveland, he still has shown signs he may be able to take over the closer role when Mariano Rivera is ready to go. Next year perhaps?

Phil Hughes
Hughes made Yankees lure when he had to exit a game early while throwing a no-hitter due to injury. Hughes has had injury issues that may have stunted his in game experience this year, but he seemed pretty good when he filled in for a injured Roger Clemens during game 3 of the ALDS. Hughes pitched 3+ innings without giving up a run, which was good because Clemens had already given the Indians a 4-0 lead. The Yanks went onto win the game, but not the series.

Ian Kennedy
He may be better known as the guy who had a conflict between getting married and playing in the playoffs, but that doesn’t take away from his talent. Oh, and he did get married. The proofs right here.

Colorado Rockies
Their hot streak goes right back to these young guns.

Jeff Francis
Francis has shown that he’s not frightened by a national stage after winning in both game 1 of the NLDS and game 1 of the NLCS. At just 26 years old, the kid knows how to take command of the game and in his third full season with the Rox he gathered a 17-9 record with a 4.22 ERA. But even better he struck out 165 batters in 215.1 innings and only gave up 25 homeruns in a hitters’ paradise.

Manny Corpas
Manny has emerged as a solid closer for the Rockies. With a 4-2 record and a 2.08 ERA while picking up 19 saves, he has added some consistency to the end of the game. Although, with the Rockies hitting the ball so well, he hasn’t really been able to pick up that many saves in the playoffs.

Troy Tulowitzki
Tulo caught our attention during a Braves game when he made an unbelievable unassisted triple play. But that’s just the start of it. He a massed the best fielding percentage by any rookie short stop in the NL while compiling hitting stats to the tune of a .291 average, .359 OBS while hitting 24 homeruns and driving in 99 RBIs. Maybe that’s why he’s a front runner for the NL Rookie of the Year crown.

Arizona Diamondbacks
To pick just three names was hard, after all, Eric Byrnes is their oldest everyday player at just 31 years old.

Mark Reynolds
Reynolds burst onto the scene in mid-May filling in for injured 3rd baseman Chad Tracy. He made his mark in his first game racking up hit first career hit and RBI and two nights later he hit his first career homerun. With his incredible start, he was moved up to the three hole and has stayed a constant on the hot corner. By years end, he had a .279 average with 17 homeruns and 69 RBIs.

Stephen Drew
Drew undoubtedly had a tough season. The younger brother of the Red Sox J.D. Drew was putting up numbers even his brother would be embarrassed with. But as the season progressed, Drew started to hit his stride, culminating in a break out series against the Cubs. We’re thinking there are only good things to come from Stephen.

Chris Young
As a leadoff batter, it may make you nervous that he’s batting .237 until you watched game 3 of the NLDS and saw Young take Rich Hill deep off the very first pitch. Then you may be ok with his 32 homeruns. But when you remember that he just turned 24 you realize the kid only will get better.

Cleveland Indians
This may be their first trip to the postseason since 2001 but they have been preparing while they waited for these guys to hit their stride.

Fausto Carmona
Carmona spent last year as a closer and that didn’t go so well. So the Indians decided to convert him to a starter. How did that work out? Hmm, let’s see, 19 wins and 195 strike outs works for us. And that lights out win during game 2 of the NLDS kind of proves our point!

Grady Sizemore
Grady made his presence known in 2005 when he played in 158 games. But apparently he wasn’t content playing in all but four games and has since been the Indians iron man playing in all 162 games. Sizemore may not be the upstart unknown that others are on our list, he was on the cover of Sports Illustrated in May, but his age, 25 and production put him here. Oh and did we mention his two all-star appearances? Well, now we just did.

Asdrubal Cabrera
He may have only played in 45 games this year but we’re going on a hunch that this kid is going to be good. In just 159 at bats, he has 22 RBIs, 30 runs and 45 hits. That’s practically Mark Teixeira numbers (55 RBIs in 53 games).

Boston Red Sox
They may be a mostly veteran team, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have a couple kids.

Dustin Pedroia
Already given the Popo Award for Biggest Surprise, we’ve been hyping up Pedroia for a while. After a slow start in April, he turned up the heat in May and never looked back. In his first full season with the Sox he has earned his spot at second the hard way, by getting down and dirty and continuing his gritty style into the playoffs. We’re even thinking he may be picking up another award by the end of this season, maybe AL Rookie of the Year?

Johnathan Papelbon
Papelbon has become the lights out closer that all teams drool over. After a 2006 season, which saw him shut down early after he subluxed his shoulder (the bone of the upper arm dislodging from its socket in the shoulder), the Red Sox were looking to make him into a starter for the 2007 season. But Papelbon wouldn’t have it. He knew he thrived in the do or die closer role and boy was he right!

Jon Lester/Clay Buchholz
These two studs will be able to keep the rotation going for the Sox for years to come. Besides the fact that he fought cancer, Lester was able to win his first game back in the Majors earlier this season. And Buchholz, he only got a no-hitter in his second career start. Yeah, they’re kind of set.

Elbows off the table!

Baseball Update:
Rockies 5, Diamondbacks 1
The Diamondbacks scored early off of Jeff Francis, but their one run in the first was all they were able to get while the Rockies pressured 2006 NL Cy Young Award winner Brandon Webb into a couple of mistakes culminating in a three run third and a 5-1 win. The D'backs threatened in the seventh until Justin Upton elbowed Kaz Matsui in an attempt to break up a double play. Upton was ruled out and killed their mojo. That and the delay caused by angry fans throwing things onto the field just like it was Talladega and Jeff Gordon had won.
WP: Jeff Francis (1-0) LP: Brandon Webb (0-1)

Friday's Schedule
Indians @ Boston; 7:00 PM/est on FOX or ESPN Radio
Probable Starters
Boston: Josh Beckett
Indians: C.C. Sabathia

Rockies @ Diamondbacks; 10:00 PM/est on TBS or ESPN Radio
Probable Starters
D'Backs: Dough Davis
Rockies: Ubaldo Jimenez

Baseball Notes: If you were watching the Rockies game last night you probably caugh Craig Sager (in a great pin stripe suit) interviewing Justin Upton's brother B.J. and their dad. B.J. plays for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and unless he is traded or leaves through free agency will probably never be in the playoffs...Congrats to Johnathan Papelbon who won the Delivery Man of the Year Award presented by DHL. The Award was voted on by the fans...In other Red Sox news, Bobby Kielty will start in right field instead of J.D. Drew...The Phillies will keep Brett Meyers in the bullpen...The Cincinnati Reds met with Dusty Baker about their current open managerial spot...MLB may suspend players who received banned drugs. Yeah, try getting this past the player's union and the ACLU.

You can place your deposit on your 2008 season tickets.

NASCAR Update:
We've hit the half way point in the Chase for the Championship as we head to the night race at Lowe's Motor Speedway. The track has been recently paved creating a smooth racing surface but night races seem to trigger more aggressiveness from the drivers and doesn't every single move seem magnified under the lights? Look for Jimmie Johnson and Tony Stewart to be fast on Saturday night in the Bank of America 500 at 7 PM/est on ABC.
Starting Lineup

Sam Hornish, Jr. is 0-4 in qualifying for a Cup race. Maybe it's a sign Sam, you should stick with the IRL!

Michael Waltrip will hold a press conference on Friday to announce plans for MWR and Dale Jarrett in 2008. A rumor floating around is that he'll be adding a partner, Bill Davis Racing perhaps?

David Stremme is still looking for a ride in 2008.

Greg Biffle is concentrating on racing during the season and his wedding and a contract extension in the off season!

Popo in my crib News:
Pittsburgh Steelers backup tailback Najeh Davenport was charged with domesstic violence, endangering children and unlawful restrain in connection with an October 4th incident in Cleveland. Watch out Najeh, because the popo are on your tail!

Romo and the Cowboys will be taking on the New England Patriots on Saturday in a battle of the undefeated...The Cowboys will have coach Wade Wilson back after missing five games for violating the league's drug policy...With David Carr missing practice due to a back injury, newly signed Vinny Testaverde may be starting for the Carolina Panthers on Sunday...Ryan Kessler believes Jesse Boulerice deserves a 20-game suspension for crosschecking him in the head...Randy Couture announced he is retiring from UFC competition...And finally, three Georgia basketball players were supsended for missing class. Mike Mercer will miss 15 games while teammate Takais Brown will miss nine and Albert Jackson will miss six. Georgia began a policy of fining players $10 and game suspensions for unexcused absences from class in an attempt to raise graduation rates.

Going to Lowes Motor Speedway this week? Better get your shots!

A group of congressional aides who were heading to Talladega Motor Speedway last weekend and Lowes Motor Speedway this weekend were given immunization shots which would protect them against hepatitis A, hepatitis B, influenza, tetanus and diphtheria. The team was on a fact finding mission to explore public health issues at heavily attended events. The Charlotte Observer reported Rep. Robin Hayes wrote to Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss) who chaired the panel:

"I have never heard of immunizations for domestic travel, and as the
representative for Concord, N.C., I feel compelled to ask why the heck the
committee feels that immunizations are needed to travel to my hometown."
Well, if you haven't gotten a tetanus shot, you should probably do that and it's a great time to get a flu shot. But hepatitis? Did you ask your aides get hepatitis shots for that Christmas party last year? You know the one you invited Pamela Anderson to. This is crazy, it's Alabama not Africa. Or are our school systems that terrible?

Thompson replied:

"Since committee staff members are visiting hospital and other health-care
facilities available at or near these venues, including areas where groups of
people are detained before being transferred to other off-site facilities, I
believe that the recommendation (not requirement) that our congressional staff
receive these same immunizations was sound."
Are these hospitals in third world countries? Yeah, you should probably give people shots when they go to say Kenya or Ethiopia but not Alabama or North Carolina! Besides the fact that this is a complete waste of money, this guy’s from Mississippi, the heart of NASCAR country. Enjoy getting reelected next year, Bennie!

Breaking News

The Braves have scheduled at press conference for 3:30 today to announce the resignation of long time GM John Schuerholz. Schuerholz has been with the team for 17 years including a stretch of 14 straight divisional titles, 5 World Series appearances and 1 World Series win. He will be replaced by assistant GM Frank Wren. I know sometimes we didn't agree on things, but I'll miss him!

UPDATE: ESPN is reporting that Schuerholz is stepping down as GM but will become team president. I guess we'll have to wait for the press conference.

UPDATE 2: Braves right fielder Jeff Francoeur told reporters that he didn't hear about the news until a few hours before it was announced but said, "He definitely deserves to retire and enjoy what he's accomplished. It's sad, because we didn't want to see him go." (source)

Braves Update:
The Braves will begin their season at home for the first time in four years. And just in time for my birthday, the Bravos will take on the Metsies from April 4-6 at the Ted. They will also welcome the Mariners while not playing Boston. I guess they were listening to Chipper Jones! Of course this is tentative, an official schedule will be released later.

He wants to leave, he told two teenage boys in a parking lot that he was ready to go...Washington Wizards center Etan Thomas will undergo open heart surgery on Thursday. The 29 year old will most likely miss the season to recover but the surgery does not signal the end of his NBA career...Allan Houston will be back with the Knicks...The Celtics were able to easily handle the Minnesota Timberwolves in their 92-81 win in London on Wednesday. Ray Allen scored 28 points in the win...Even though she may be outspoken that doesn't take away from the fact that she's a good goalie, which is probably why Hope Solo was selected to the US team which will be playing a three game series against Mexico...Doper Marion Jones' teammate Passion Richardson wants to keep the bronze medal she earned while on a relay team with Jones...For Terrell Owens words are best written rather than said, at least not until after Sunday's game where the 5-0 Cowboys take on the 5-0 Patriots...Tommy Becker became the second Minnesota football player to quit the team. Becker plans on transfering at the end of the semester...In creepy news, the body of George Gipp was exhumed for DNA testing. Re: Best Hair in Nascar

So yesterday we posted our list of the Best Hair in Nascar and today as I was reading an article about Tony on ESPN.com they mentioned his growing locks:

"An onlooker is semi-heckling Stewart about his hair, a mane of thick black
strands with a touch of gray that seems in dire need of a trim. On it grows, and
for no other reason than because everyone keeps heckling him about it.
Consummate Tony Stewart." (source)
We here at Popo in my Crib have to disagree. We love the long hair. We like the natural wave, the almost Farah Fawcett like flip that happens around the ears and we also enjoy the fact that unlike some people cough *michael waltrip* cough, Tony is not using Just for Men hair products. We're not going all youtube to put our best leave Tony's hair alone impression, but we will say this, keep it long Tony, it's really working for you!

Mother's day comes early for the Wild

The Minnesota Wild decided to take the player's mothers along for their next road trip. The Wild had taken along the dad's last year but decided to extend the offer to the women who gave birth to them. Wild Coach Jacques Lemaire expressed his approval:

"Because every time there is something, it's the father. The father gets it, and
the mother never gets nothing. And they (mothers) are the ones who spent a lot
of time with (players), and they're the ones who fed them and showed them how to
walk and all that. And took them to the arena most of the time, because I know
my wife did that with the kids. I wasn't there in the arenas; my wife was, every
morning. Six o'clock, she was there."
I couldn't have said it better Jacques. Of the 25 players, 17 moms and 7 staff member moms will accompany the team to road games in Phoenix, Anaheim and Los Angeles.

Good call Clint!...Curt Schilling will be the starting pitcher in game 2 for the Red Sox...8,000 tickets were reportedly available for Game 1 of the NLCS in Arizona.

Braves Rumors

We've been so caught up in our post season round up we haven't been able to give some good Braves gossip.

Tom Glavine to the Braves
Ever since the debacle that was his final start with the Mets, rumors have been swirling that Glavine may be willing to return to the Braves, the team that drafted him in 1984. Let's be honest we're a pitcher or two short.

Braves looking for young pitchers
Dan Harren, Joe Blanton or Noah Lowry, maybe? (source)

Edgar Renteria on the trading block
The Braves need pitchers and they have two capable short stops, Renteria and Yunel Escobar. The upsides with Escobar are he's young and cheap! (source)

Bye-bye Terry Pendleton
With St. Louis' possible managerial opening, Braves hitting coach Terry Pendleton may be heading west. (source) well either there or Kansas City which definately will be in need of a manager after Buddy Bell left at the end of the season. (source)

We'll keep you up to date if we hear anything else.
