You know your an athlete if...

So keeping in line with the great Jeff Foxworthy’s you know you’re a redneck if…we are doing our own sports version.

You know you’re a hockey player if…

You are missing some teeth

You still have a mullet

You’ve broken you’re nose so many times it’s almost back to normal

You know you’re a basketball player if…

You have thinner legs than your wives

You’re not allowed on carnival rides because you’re too tall

You’re think the best part of your uniform are your tattoos.

You know you’re a baseball player if…

You can crack a walnut with your forearms

You hate to admit it, but you're definately pear shaped

Your severance package is rivaling that of a Fortune 500 CEO

You know you’re a football player if…

You’re hair is longer than the name on the back of your jersey

You and Donkey Lips from "Salute Your Shorts" share a similar body type

You sometimes need to be reminded what day it is, or even what your name is

You know you’re a Nascar driver if…

Your arms are the most in shape part of your body

You glove compartment is filled with speeding tickets

You finish every sentence thanking your sponsors for all of their hard work no matter what some one asks you

You know you’re a soccer player if...

You have the most incredibly toned body ever

If you can successfully walk through the streets of any major US city without being noticed, then get on a plane and head anywhere else in the world and get mobbed at the airport.

You can do anything with your feet, head or chest, but very little with your hands.

Baseball Update:
Even though the baseball season got underway last week in Japan, the official start of baseball in America kicked off on Sunday night, when the Ryan Zimmerman christened the new Nationals Park with a walk off homerun to give the Nats a 3-2 victory over the Braves.

Over one hundred thousand people poured into Los Angeles Coliseum to watch an exhibition game between the Dodgers and Red Sox as a part of the celebration of 50 years of Dodgers baseball in LA or as my family calls 50 years of hell. Yeah, we're still trying to get over the fact that the Dodgers have left Brooklyn.

The Dodgers also placed Nomar Garciaparra, Andy LaRoche and Jason Schmidt on the 15 day DL. Los Angeles is expected to play Tony Abreu at third.

The Padres placed Jim Edmonds on the 15 day DL with a calf injury.

The Mets have named Mike Pelfrey their fifth starter while his chief rival Orlando Hernandez was placed on the 15 day DL.

While the Yankees enter Yankee Stadium for their final Opening Day on Monday, Andy Pettitte will have to watch from the bench after the Yankees put him on the 15 day DL. Pettitte should be activated in time to make his first start of the season on April 5th.

The Twins have sent pitcher Francisco Liriano to the minors. Liriano missed all of the 2007 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

The Rockies optioned outfielder Cory Sullivan to triple-A Colorado Springs giving the fifth outfielder spot to Scott Podsednik.

The Orioles have released Jay Gibbons but will stay pay him $11.9 million they owe on his contract. Nice servance.

Meanwhile the Astros have waved pitcher Woody Williams but will pay him the $6.5 million they owe him.

You'll have to bring extra cash to the ballpark with ticket prices increasing an average of 10.9%.

BALCO founder Victor Conte is looking to write a tell all book. You should save your energy for the countless depositions you'll be involved in. On the other hand, you could just hand prosecutors your book to make the whole process easier.

Our get well wishes go out to Diamondbacks pitcher Doug Davis who has announced he is battling thyroid cancer.

Nascar News:
With his 8th place finish, Jamie McMurray has avoided the danger zone for next week's race in Texas comfortably seated in 30th in points.

David Reutimann says he's getting used to his new ride, the #44 car.

The plot thickens in the missing swaybar case. Roush Fenway is claiming malicious intent while Michael Waltrip Racing is calling it an innocent mistake. You be the judge, which side do you believe?

Popo in my crib News:
Five time all-star catcher Benito Santiago has some explaining to do after it was revealed that he purchased a 2003 Mercedes-Benz CL55 from known drug dealer Jacques Lavigne. Lavigne recently plead guilty to drug trafficing chargers. During the case, Jacques revealed that he had given an unidentified person 80 grand to buy a car and title it in their name in Florida. I wonder if on the check in the memo section it said "bought something." So far the former major leaguer has not been charged. But watch out Benito, because the popo are on your tail!

Wake Forest signee and top basketball recruit Al-Farouq Aminu spent the weekend in the Gwinnett County jail after his arrest on felony aggravated assault and misdemeanor criminal trespassing charges. Allegedly, the 17 year old recruit and his two Norcross teammates Prince Kent and Quintin Square used a BB gun to shoot Rebeccas Baltich in the stomach. Aminu turned himself into police and was released on $3,500 bond. Watch out Al-Farouq, because the popo are on your tail!

News & Notes: It was close, but apparently the glass slipper Davidson was wearing cracked as they lost a close one to Kansas 59-57, ending their Cinderella run at the Elite 8...But there was some good news for Davidson after star guard Stephen Curry said he's coming back next year...Too bad for Knicks fans, Isiah Thomas says he's not interested in the Indiana job...It it got even tighter in the West after Golden State flushed out a 114-104 win over the Mavs creating a three way tie for seventh place...I don't know if can get any more embarrassing for the Heat who lost to the Celtics 88-62...The Penguins topped the Rangers 3-1 to move a top the East...The Wild clinched a playoff birth with their 3-2 OT win over the Avalanche...Congratulations to Scott Dixon for winning the first unified open wheel race on Saturday night...Finally, it looks like Andy Roddick has finally won something, the heart of Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Brooklyn Decker. The pair have recently become enaged. No date has been set. Maybe that's why he's missing the Olympics.

Goody's Cool Orange 500

Winner: Denny Hamlin

Recap: The beating and banging seemed to start from the drop of the green flag, but when the dust finally settled it was a Virginia native in Victory Lane, Denny Hamlin. Hendrick Motorsports, much like Joe Gibbs Racing two weeks ago at Bristol did everything but win, making a statement that they are not a team to take lightly. Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson all took turns running from the point, but in the end, Hamlin proved too strong capturing his first ever grandfather clock on Sunday in front of his home state fans.

Results Points Standings Photos

Shout Outs: Hendrick Motorsports proved you shouldn't count them out, after all the team has six championships and four Daytona 500 wins between four drivers. And even though they were unable to get a win this weekend, they did bring in all four cars in the top seven. Shout outs also go out to Elliott Sadler who was nursing an injured back and was still able to keep his nose clean and bring home a 15th place finish. Not an easy task on a track that is so demanding even on a healthy driver.

Disappointments: After an impressive finish at Bristol two weeks ago, Aric Amorola seemed to hit everything but the pace car before exiting the race with engine issues on Sunday. He ended up finishing 42, 121 laps down.

Next Race: Sunday, April 6th @ Texas Motor Speedway

Comedy of Errors Screws David Reutimann and other Nascar Bits

David Reutimann began the year in the Michael Waltrip Racing’s #00 Toyota. In the first five races he had earned his team a comfortable 27th place in the points standings easily guaranteeing him a spot in next couple races. But with his move over to the #44 car vacated by Dale Jarrett, Reutimann and co were hoping to take those well earned points with them. Not so, said Nascar which put the kibosh on the brillant idea. And now, instead of sitting in 27th place, Reutimann will instead be hanging out in 34th only 16 points in front of Nascar’s version of the Mendoza line and giving rookie Michael McDowell the 27th place standing when he steps into the #00 car this weekend at Martinsville.

Got it? Not really, well here's the rub. Nascar had allowed Kurt Busch and Sam Hornish, Jr. who are both racing for Penske South this season, to swap points in an effort to guarantee both cars a starting spot in the first five races. Hornish had no points in the #77 car, Busch did but he also had a Championship in his back pocket that would allow him to use the Champion's provisional if he was unable to qualify on time. Thus the switch. But that, as Nascar said, was only because it was an off-season move.

The governing body continued to come under fire for that decision especially when Petty Enterprises hinted at swapping points between Kyle Petty and Bobby Labonte (Labonte also holding that Championship card). The team later decided against it, but the precedent had been set in years past and now it was up to Nascar to create yet another lame rule out of their ass.

The question remains, why didn’t MWR plan for this and keep Reutimann in the #00 car? Was sponsorship the driving force? Because I don’t think they’d be happy if Reutimann is forced to miss a race because of this blunder. And besides, DEI has been able to fluidly move between veteran driver Mark Martin and newbie Aric Almirola in the #8 car without a hitch. So why was Reutimann moving from one car to the other?

Plus, Nascar really needs to watch itself. Yes, ratings are up, but they can't keep playing this game and expect to be taken seriously. They will see a huge push from the newly unified open wheel racing this weekend when the IRL comes to play in Homestead. And the IRL boasts better racing, equal stars and a real championship. So it’s time for Nascar to start acting like one of the big boys and put all if its cards on the table.

Roush Fenway Notes: When they aren't accusing Toyota of stealing their stuff, they are negotiations to keep Greg Biffle in their stable cars. Sorry, Jamie but it's looking like you're going to be the odd man out when Roush Fenway cuts itself down to four teams. Well don't worry, maybe they can get you a ride over at Yates Racing.

GEM: Not only is Elliott Sadler's back injury effecting his ability to drive on Sunday, but it could hurt his NCAA plans. He was hoping to catch his beloved UNC play on Saturday and if they advance (which for maybe the first time ever, I'm ok with since it will save my bracket) he was hoping to fly between San Antonio where the Final Four will be held and Dallas where the Cup drivers will be competing at Texas Motorspeedway. Apparently not only did he injure his back doing his normal workout as reported earlier in the morning in our Nascar section, but he may have aggravated it playing golf. Like from bad to worse for GEM, huh?

Tony Update: Yesterday we reported that Tony got a haircut, finally. Well we're still waiting on the photographic evidence. We'll post it when it makes the photo wire so check back and tell us what you think of his new do or maybe don't we'll have to see.
UPDATE: We finally got a picture of the shorter hair. Better, but a little too styled in the front. We would have rathered less volume.

Also does it seem like Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Kasey Kahne also went to the barber on their off weekend?

My Super Sweet 16 Day 2

Tennesse was the biggest name to go down on Thursday. Click here to update your brackets and more Tourney news in the News & Notes section.

Baseball Update:
Remember when Barry Bonds played in San Francisco? Well, the Giants are hoping that if you haven't already forgotten that fact, that you will soon by taking down all Bonds related stuff.

Good news for Red Sox nation, Josh Beckett had a good minor league outting on Thursday.

Good news for Braves fans too, John Smoltz says he's confident he'll be able to make his April 6th start against the Mets.

Chris Capuano has decided to forgo surgery and use rehab instead to help his left elbow. After that announcement, the Brewers placed him on the 15 DL. I think this course of action should be called doing a Schilling in honor of Curt Schilling who is attempting the same thing this season.

The Phillies reassigned pitcher Kris Benson to minor league camp while he continues his comeback from shoulder surgery.

Kansas City Royal Miguel Olivo's suspension has been reduced from five to four games. Olivo had gotten the penalty while he was a member of the Marlins and was involved in a late season incident with the Mets.

Last week the Dodgers kissed the sunshine state goodbye and in true Dodgers style dropped their final game at Dodgertown. Not to be outdone by their Los Angeles counterparts, the Indians too said goodbye to their Florida spring training home this week with a loss to the Yankees.

Only a few days before the Nationals Park opens for business, the players got a glimpse of the new baseball gem.

So normally I don't like it when the government intervines in sports matters, but I like the fact that Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich said he's willing to do whatever it takes to keep the Cubs playing at Wrigley Field.

If you were hoping to marry Yankees outfielder Hideki Matsui, you'll have to wait to be wife number 2 after he ranoff and got married on Wednesday. And if you're name is Derek Jeter or Bobby Abreu, you're out $1,000.

Nascar Update:
After a week off to celebrate Easter, the Cup Series continues with a stop over in Martinsville. A short strack beast, Martinsville offers great racing with a side of big time pile-ups. As the season gets close to closing its first quarter, the Hendrick team remains winless but is hitting up a track that has been very successful to them in the past, can they regain their 2007 stride? Or will one of the Virginia boys like last race winner Jeff Burton, Denny Hamlin or Elliott Sadler make their way into victory lane. Tune into FOX at 1:30 PM/est to watch the Goody's Cool Orange 500 to find out.

UPDATE: According to this, Elliott Sadler is in jeopardy of even starting this weekend at Martinsville. Seems Elliott injured his back on Wednesday working out. I bet this is the reason Tony Stewart gives on why his only exercise is from the couch to the fridge. Don't trip on any McDonald's wrappers, Smoke.

Jamie McMurray will be a big name to watch during qualifying as the Cup star is currently sitting outside the top 35.

If history is an indicator, the guys in the top 12 right now have a great chance to make the Chase.

Dale Earnhardt, Jr. has announced he'll race in the Nationwide Series in Texas on April 5th.

News & Notes: Oh what a couple of weeks can do for a team. It seems like only yesterday that Tennessee was number one in the naiton, now after losing to Louisville 79-60 on Thursday, they'll have a great seat on the couch to watch who ends up being the real number one...Xavier escaped West Virginia's grip with a 79-75 OT win...Davidson is so excited to be in the Sweet 16, it's offering students a free trip to see the game...Great news for the Nuggets, as forward Nene returned to the court for the first time since undergoing surgery to remove a cancerous testicular tumor 2 1/2 months ago...And bonus, Denver won 118-105 over the Mavs...Sidney Crosby returned to the Penguins lineup for the first time in about a week in Pittsburgh's 3-1 win over the Islanders...The Rangers also got a nice return in the form of Scott Gomez who did not dissappoint raking up two assists in the Blueshirts 3-2 win over the Devils...The Cowboys really really really want Pacman Jones. They have even increased their trade offer to the Titans to get the troubled players. I wonder if Jones contract stipulates that he gets paid in singles...The Blazers were not so happy to learn that number one draft pick Greg Oden participated in a pick up game at a fitness center in Tualatin, Ore...Graham Rahal will miss the IRL season opener this weekend after his team decided they did not have enough time to repair his car which was injured in a crash on Tuesday...Even with 25 cars looking to start the IRL season opener at Homestead, all eyes will be on Dan Wheldon in quest to win his fourth straight victory at the track...Instead of soccer or little league for your kids, why not sign them up for Ultimate Fighting. You know, no one will want to steal their lunch money after they go head to head with another 6 year old in the ring.

Check this out: It's pilot season kids which means loads of your favorite stars will be poping up in the news for signing on for news shows that may or may not make it to a TV near you. The last casting is former 24 girl Elisha Cuthbert who is set to star in NY-LON. It's a remake of the 2004 british hit that starred former Office and current Unhitched star Rashida Jones. A Sad Hair Day

We here at PIMC are bit obsessed with hair and we're not just talking about our own lovely locks, but that of athletes all around the world of sports, which has culminated in last year's list of best hair baseball and Nascar. Now comes word that one of favorite coiffed guys, Tony Stewart, has actually shed his long hair in favor of a new short do.
“To be honest, I just woke up one morning and told one of my roommates, ‘Today’s the day. I’m going to get it cut,’” Stewart said. “There was no rhyme or reason for it. I just woke up that morning and decided to get my hair cut, and that was that. “I kind of laughed about it myself because there wasn’t anything that happened that made me do it. I just went ahead and did it. People who know me say I look 10 years younger now.”
Dude, are you sure having roommates at 35 doesn't make you feel 10 years younger?

The new haircut will make its debut at Martinsville on Friday. We here at PIMC propose a moment of silence in honor of the hair lost in this recent cutting. Ok, we're over it. I mean it was getting a bit creepy. Plus we really need him to win a race, our fantasy team is totally tanking thanks in part to the Hendrick squad.

Another Track Bites the Dust

So apparently I am very behind on this story only discovering it while reading the New York Times on Monday, but famed New Jersey track Wall Township Speedway (nee Wall Stadium) has closed its doors after over 50 years of business. While it is not currently known the exact reason for the closure, a press release by part owner Timothy F. Shinn confirmed fears of racers and fans alike stating:

"It is with an extremely heavy heart that I must, at this time, formally announce the closing of our beloved Wall Township Speedway, formerly known to the vast majority of us as Wall Stadium."
The Track had noticed a recent decline in attendance sparking rumors of its demise.

The track follows suit in a growing and disconcerting trend of closing down speedways across the country. Usually the speedways are turned into large developments but plans for the roughly 48 acre property have not been released. Wall Township Mayor John Devlin is hoping the land will remain an office and research zone and not be re-zoned for housing. Any moron who would put up a major housing development must not be reading the news.

Wall Stadium has played host to many of driver’s career including current Nascar Star Martin Truex, Jr. and Gillett Evernham Motorsports owner Ray Evernham.

How Sweet it is to be Love by You

Sorry for the late post and lack of posting today, but the job that actually pays me money called and I had a lot of stuff to get done. So here is the best of yesterday and today.

Baseball Update:
The A's were able to even up the short series with the Red Sox in Japan on Tuesday with a 5-1 win.

The Blue Jays are close to a six year extension to keep Alex Rios in Toronto. The deal could guarantee him $65 million.

When they lose an outfielder they're fine because they have a bunch of quality players, but the Angels losing Kelvim Escobar could be another story.

Former Brave Chris Reitsma has been cut from the Mariners squad and has reportedly left camp.

In other Mariners pitching news, it's safe to safe this spring training has not gone Erik Bedard's way, giving up 35 hits in 24 innings and raking up a 8.63 ERA. But don't worry, he'll still be Seattle's Opening Day starter. Oh and he picked up the win in his final spring training start, a 8-5 victory over the Royals.

If you look at Dontrelle Willis numbers while in Florida the trend was going in the wrong direction so is it really a surprise that he's been struggling since being traded to Detroit, an American League team? Willis allowed seven runs, six earned and eight hits in just three innings of work during the Tigers 7-4 loss to the Pirates. I don't think the Tigers saw this coming, but then again it's only spring.

Masumi Kuwata has retired at the age of 39. He spent his first major league season in Pittsburgh last year, but has stacked up legendary figures while playing in Japan.

More Minor League send downs including Texas Rangers catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Red Sox outfielder Brandon Moss and hard throwing Reds pitcher Homer Bailey.

So the one time Arod chooses not to open his mouth maybe the only time people actually want to listen. Oh Magglio Ordonez's statement was hardly a not guilty plea. Not that means much.

TBS has announced their new broadcasters for this year's upcoming season. Braves fans will notice the familiar voice of Chip Caray who has been calling games for TBS. He'll be joined in the booth by either Ron Darling and Buck Martinez who will alternate games. I for sure will miss hearing the rare Chip and Skip combo and even Joe Simpson and long gone Don Sutton, but it's a brand new world out there, huh?

Finally, mark your calendars, National Baseball Card Day is March 29th. Click here for more info.

Nascar Update:
It's getting worse for Robby Gordon. After having his 100 point penalty rescinded by an appeals board, Gordon now has to deal with a law suit. Vanguard Integrity Professionals is suing Gordon for $1.15 million over a dispute stemming from the cancelled Dakar Rally. Vanguard is ordering Gordon to cease wearing any logos on his Nascar uniforms and equipment. I get the whole lawsuit thing, but by having Gordon wear your logos, isn't that almost like free PR? You should sue him for $1.15 million and make him wear your logos for FREE!

Toyota pulled a huge uh-oh after returning a part to Roush Fenway Racing that was found in Toyota's possession. Currently the Japanese auto manufacturer is staying mum on how said part found its way over the Toyota camp.

Speaking of Toyota, BAM Racing has announced it will start using Toyota engines supplied by Bill Davis Racing.

Mike Wallace's daughter Chrissy will be making her Truck Series debut this weekend.

Hendrick Motorsports is hoping to get its first victory of the year at Martinsville this weekend.

Popo in my crib News:
So the next time you want to voice your displeasure with a certain athlete, use your voice not your water bottle after Roland Flores plead guilty to misdemeanor counts of using force and voilence to assualt Mike Piazza and was sentenced to 30 days in jail along with 3 years parole and barred owning or possessing a fire arm for 10 years. He was also ordered to stay away from Angel Stadium for three years. Mr. Flores threw a water bottle at Mike Piazza on July 25, 2007 while sitting in the front row near the on-deck circle. Watch out Roland, because the popo are on your tail!

News & Notes: THe Celtics battled back to prove the East isn't quite slacking in their 117-97 win over the Suns...Riley is calling Shaq's criticism of the Heat sad, but then what do you call deserting your team to go on a scouting trip? I think that's kind of sad too...Ok, this could also be called sad, Jim Dolan would prefer to keep Isiah Thomas as coach of the New York Knicks...If MLB can go to Japan and China, than the NBA should certainly be able to go to Europe...Virginia Tech's 1-0 win over team US softball ended US's 185 game winning streak...Sad news, NFL prospect Heath Benedict was found dead on his couch. The popo do not suspect any foul play. Benedict was just 24 years old...The NFL wants to cut down on player's long hair...Countdown to the brand spanking new IRL season is a T-minus 2 days. To get you in the mood click here to learn about former Champ Tonny Kanaan's expanding family...After 12 season, Cal has fired head coach Ben Braun...Finally, don't forget to catch the Sweet 16 today.

Alex Rodriguez should really stop talking

Alex Rodriguez needs a muzzle. If the only thing this kid did was hit the ball and make some ridiculous gold glove grab, I bet more people would like him. But instead he opens his mouth in an attempt to make him seem more personable, but really just makes him look more like the court jester. And at least the court jester was brought in to make people laugh. I’m pretty sure his intentions are not to make people laugh, but he totally does. Kind of like Titanic or The Phantom of the Opera, I don't think I was supposed to laugh through those movies, but I was basically rolling on the floor. And in the case of Titanic, my stomach was in so much pain for the next few days. Way better than crunches.

Anyway, seems Mr. regular season had a sit down with the New York Daily News were he mused about really wanting to play for the Mets and his love of guns. Maybe he should become the new Charlton Heston. For the full article click here.

Brandon Marshall is not a fan of McDonald's wrappers

Broncos WR Brandon Marshall will be out for the next few months are hurting his arm sliding on a fast food chain’s wrapper. I always knew that McDonald’s was hazardous to your health. Whether it be increasing your cholesterol, blood pressure or waste line, but I never knew even its wrappers could be deadly.

Marshall had told the Rocky Mountain News that he suffered only a cut on his arm, but the NFL Network says it's a little more than just a cut. Citing no source (what are they The National Enquirer?) Marshall had not just cut his arm, but had "severed an artery, a vein and a nerve in his forearm along with tendons to five muscles." Yeah that's a little worse than just a cut you could patch up with a Dora the Explorer band aid.

Luckily for Mr. Marshall, this little incident did postpone his DUI trail to June. So I guess it was a bit of a happy meal for the WR. Oh, and watch out Brandon, because the popo are on your tail!

Opening Day in Japan

Baseball Update:
As I type, the A's are taking on the Red Sox in Japan. I'll update the score when it's final.
UPDATE: For those who don't want to know the final score, don't click here.

The Cubs have decided to make Kerry Wood their closer for the season. Gee, I hope he holds up.

Meanwhile, the deal that would send Brian Roberts to Chicago looks to be off the table for now.

And the Cubbies are pursuing former Blue Jay Reed Johnson.

Speaking of closers, the Phillies have put theirs, Brad Lidge on the 15 day DL. He becomes eligible to come off on April 5th.

And the Twins sigend their closer Joe Nathan to a four year extension worth $47 million.

Two big name pitchers could open the season on the DL. The Braves ace John Smoltz decided not to test his sore shoulder on Monday but says he will try on Tuesday while the Yankees are waiting to see how Andy Pettitte's back feels.

It just keeps getting worse for the Giants after infielder Kevin Frandsen ruptured his left Achilles' tendon and could miss the rest of the season. Goodness that sounds painful, I practically fainted out of my chair just typing that.

Angels outfielder Gary Matthews, Jr. is day to day with a sprained ankle. And his teammate Chone Figgins will be checked out on Tuesday after leaving the same game on Monday with cramps in his hand.

The Blue Jays did not fair quite as well after their new third baseman Scott Rolen had a screw placed in his fractured middle finger. He'll miss at least two weeks.

Good news for the Pirates, second baseman Freddy Sanchez will not need shoulder surgery and could be ready to go for Opening Day.

The Uptons sure did something right when they raised Justin and BJ. Click here to learn a little bit more about them.

In case you're like me and you chose to spend a fantasy pick or two on an up and comer like say Cameron Maybin or Evan Longoria, you may want to shelve them as it seems they'll be heading to the minors for the time being. Rangers catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia may also be heading in that direction.

Meanwhile, the Twins have decided make Carlos Gomez their starting center. And yes, those garbage bags are the outfield fence Carlos.

Speaking of Center, it looks like that's where Brandon Inge will be heading while the Tigers everyday centerfielder Curtis Granderson sits on the DL. It's not the trade he was looking for, but at least it's better than playing back up catcher.

The Royals got a visit from hockey great Wayne Gretzky. The Great One pined "I grew up wishing I could be a baseball player." Instead he had to settle with being like the greatest hockey player of all time. Life certainly sucks for him.

Legends Field will officially change its name to George M. Steinbrenner Field during ceromies held prior to the start of Thursday's game against the Pirates.

Owners and the MLBPA will meet to discuss new tougher drug agreement between the two sides. A new deal would also rescind suspensions givent to those mentioned in the Mitchell Report "as part of an overall amnesty for players mentioned in the report."

Nascar Update:
There are 47 drivers on the cup entry list for Martinsville. Click here to see the names.

Disasterous may not even be the proper word to explain Jamie McMurray's time at Roush Fenway Racing. Yeah, he got a win, but it's a crime to be that good of equipment and be on the outside of the top 35 in points like Jamie currenlty is, making qualifying all the more important for the 26 team.

If you're looking for David Reutiman this weekend at Martinsville, he'll be in the 44 not the 00 we're used to seeing.

Crew Chief Gene Nead has left the #21 Wood Brothers Ford, while Slugger Labbe has left Bill Davis Racing.

Racing is returning to Rockingham. Is there anything more sweeter than that?

how are your brackets doing?

It was a crazy weekend, click here to check the updated brackets. More on the tournament in the News & Notes section.

Baseball Update:
The Red Sox will be without the services of Sean Casey after he developed a stiff neck after the 18 flight to Japan. Isn't that what those weird blow-up neck pillow things are for?

Meanwhile Josh Beckett threw two scoreless innings in a minor league game.

It's fair to say Miguel Cabrera would not have gotten an 8 year $153.3 million contract in Florida. But now that he's with the Tigers, that fact may have changed after the two sides agreed on a preliminary deal.

The Tigers on the other hand will be without centerfielder Curtis Granderson for at least a month after he was hit by a pitch by Phillie thrower Trave Blackley and broke a finger on his right hand.

Speaking of broken fingers the Blue Jays have to deal with the absence of Scott Rolen after he broke his finger during fielding drills on Sunday.

They also released Reed Johnson.

The Brewers could be one pitcher short this season after Chris Capuano was diagnosised with a torn ligament in his pitching elbow and will probably undergo Tommy John surgery.

The Brew Crew will use Ben Sheets as their Opening Day starter.

The Mets have decided to make Johan Santana their Opening Day starter.

Jeremy Guthrie will be the Orioles Opening Day starter.

After failing to make the Major League roster, longtime Braves catcher Javy Lopez has retired. For more Braves news head over to our Braves Blog.

Four host cities were announced for the opening round of the World Baseball Classic in 2009.

Nascar Update:
With the most of the Cup stars on vacation, Scott Wimmer was able to pick up the win at the Pepsi 300 in Nashville.

News & Notes: Two number 2 seats did not make it passed this weekend after Georgetown lost to Davidson 74-70 and Duke fell to West Virginia 73-67...After getting dropped in the opening round of the Tournament, Lute Olson is returning to work as head coach of Arizona after a year off...Not only did the Dallas Mavericks lose 88-81 to the Spurs but they also lost star Dirk Nowitzki...The Warriors squeaked out a win over the Lakers 115-111...Good news, good news for the Penguins, they killed the Devil 7-1, grabbed teh Atlantic Division lead and they may get Sidney Crosby back on Monday. Although the way they're playing without him, maybe that's just ok news...The Flyers sailed to a 4-1 victory over the Islanders, knocking them out of the playoff picture...Geoff Ogivly is holding onto the lead at Doral putting Tiger Woods streak in jeopardy...Congrats to Kimi Raikkonen on winning the Malaysian Grand Prix.

Race to the Bottom

While all of these baseball analysts list the teams they think will take the division title, we’d prefer to go the glass half empty route and chose the teams that we think will be occupying the cellar in their respective divisions.

AL East - Baltimore Orioles
While the usual pick in this division would be the Tampa Bay Rays after all they’ve only had one season where they came in fourth in their entire history, but this year we’re thinking the Rays have done just enough during the off season that the Baltimore Orioles will capture fifth place. After trading Miguel Tejada and Erik Bedard in the off season and placing Brian Roberts, Kevin Millar and anyone else they can send out on the block, it’s looking like a huge rebuilding year down in Baltimore.

AL Central - Kansas City Royals
Going along with trends is usually a boring way to do things, but we don’t really see Kansas City rallying their way into fourth place this season. Yes, the Twins lost Torii Hunter and traded Johan Santana and pretty much anyone else they could find to get a replacement for Torii Hunter and it’s never a good sign when your manager is already telling people he’s willing to get the ax if his team doesn’t do well during SPRING TRAINING, Chicago, but we see Kansas City trudging along to another sub-par season.

AL West - Texas Rangers
Fire sale is the name of the game in Oakland after trading Nick Swisher and Dan Harren in the off-season. We mean, they weren’t that great last season, and we don’t see them roaring back this season. And even with Texas’ crop of hitters earning another year of experience their pitching is still lack luster and could once again prove to be their Achilles’ heel. With the Angels and Mariners looking as playoff contenders, the A’s and Rangers will be fighting for number three, but we think the Rangers may lose that battle.

NL East - Florida Marlins
This may be one of the tougher divisions to figure out. Yeah the Mets, Phillies and Braves will once again be in contention for the divisional crown; however the Nationals and Marlins may not be too bad off. I know what you’re thinking, the Marlins gave up their two best players Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera to Detroit and now rest their hopes squarely on Hanley Ramirez’s shoulder but two years ago they were a group of young nobodies with no expectations and they surprised a lot of people. Plus they could have Cameron Maybin and Andrew Miller leading the charge of the new and improved Florida team. Or they could completely fall a part. And the Nationals have two other unknowns in Lastings Milledge and Elijah Dukes. Both are talented players but they both have off the field issues that made them easy trade bait this off season. Not to mention that stud over on the hot corner Ryan Zimmerman who according to John Kruk will blast 50 homers this year. (take that as you will) See our decision is torn because there are so many variables but we’re thinking if the Nats could win 73 games last season after people thought they’d be vying with the 62 Mets for worst season of all time, they can do it again. So sorry Florida, but we’re picking you to hang out in the cellar this season.

NL Central - Pittsburgh Pirates
This division is always up for grabs. Six teams playing just well enough to get themselves a spot in the playoffs, it’s like mediocrity is God in the Central making this pick pretty hard as well. Pittsburgh will probably have another losing season, but will it be good enough to put them in last place? Have the Reds improved at all from last season? What about the Astros, they’ve got one hell of a centerfielder, but he just learned he cannot walk through glass. The Brewers are featuring a good young core of hitters in Prince Fielder and Ryan Braun that could put them in the hunt for the title and the Cubs are pretty similar leaving the Cardinals whose pitching staff is currently spending more time in the doctor’s office than they are on the mound. So who to pick…hmm we’ll go out on a limb and go with the Pirates. It’s called being conservative, you don’t always have to have novel ideas!

NL West - San Francisco Giants
Ok, so this division is supposed to be stacked with the young Diamondbacks looking to repeat as divisional title holders while the Rockies are hoping to punch another ticket to the World Series. Then there are the Dodgers who are currently looking for a third baseman that does not have hand problems and the Padres are always in need of good hitting and then there are the Giants. This is one of the easiest divisions to pick, it’s the Giants. The one thing that they got going for them, well two things they got going for them are Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain and they did sign Aaron Rowand but that’s where it ends, Omar Vizquel is injured (although he could be back in mid-April), most of the team hovering around the 30 year mark and I think they could pull a kayaker from McCovey Cove that could be a better fill in than some of their bench players. All we can say is it’s going to be a rough season in the Bay Area.

Another reason to love baseball

Even if you aren't a huge baseball fan, or in fact a fan of the sport at all, you can benefit from new hotel discounts at major league cities. These packages sometimes require a purchase of tickets to a baseball game, but other packages don't even require that. Although you can lock yourself into advancement or strict cancellation rules, now everyone can enjoy the national pastime without even stepping foot into a Major League ballpark.

Day Two of Pretending to Work at the Office News

Click here to update your brackets, more NCAA news in the News & Notes section.

Baseball Update:
The Cardinals have signed pitcher Adam Wainwright to a four year, $15 million contract.

Meanwhile the Nationals have cut former starter John Patterson.

Joe Nathan is getting closer to a deal that will keep him in Minnesota for the near future.

The Blue Jays are hoping that closer B.J. Ryan's soreness in his throwing arm will go away. But for now, it will keep him out for the next few days.

Good news for the Phillies, Brad Lidge had quite a Grapefruit League debut getting out four of five batters including three strike out and one walk int he Phillies 3-0 win over the Pirates.

The Cubbies have a big whole to fill with Kerry Wood's back going all crazy on him. And Carlos Marmol is not looking like he's up to the gig after he and teammate Kevin Hart allowed four runs in the eighth in the A's 5-2 win.

The Rays and Indians finished in a 4-4 tie, but it was B.J. Upton's early departure after getting hit above the elbow that may concern the Rays.

The Dodgers beat the Chicago White Sox 8-2 in their first ever Cactus League game. I don't know why it bothers me so much that they left Dodgertown especially since I wasn't even remotely alive when they played in Brooklyn, I mean my mom was 10 and my dad was 13 when they left, but it does.

With the Red Sox and A's touching down on Japanese soil on Wednesday, former MLB manager and current Chiba Lotte Marines Manager Bobby Valentine is calling the timing of these games a little off.

So it's not getting any better for Brian McNamee. After squeling on friend Roger Clemens, the former trainer fainted while driving his Lexus and crashed into a bus. Luckily, no one was seriously injured.

Nascar Update:
The Cup boys have the rare off weekend thanks to a little thing called Easter. But don't worry the Nationwide Series guys will pick up the slack racing in Nashville on Saturday afternoon. This race will feature less Cup Series guys giving way to an actual Nationwide driver surprising the field and taking the checkers. Tune into EPSN2 at 2 PM/est for all of the action of the Pepsi 300.

Matthew Willis investigates where all the good Nascar mutasches have gone. Click here for the article.

Five races in and we already have some bubble drivers none more disappointing than Jamie McMurray. Because like you didn't expect all of the open wheel guys like Sam Hornish, Jr. and Dario Franchitti to struggle.

Apparently people are calling for Tony Eury, Jr.'s head. Why I have no idea. Junior's in fifth in the points standings while not one of his Hendrick teammates rank in the top 12 and he's been banging on the door of a win all season. Goodness, give the guy a break.

You know Junior and Jeff Gordon are bound to rank highest on the popularity chart, but how did Michael Waltrip and Kyle Petty end up in the top 5. Click here to find out.

News & Notes: It's the biggest story to come out of Day 1 of the NCAA tournament, a near upset for Belmont, thank goodness Duke was able to pull it out 71-70...The biggest rout of the night went to UCLA who beat Mississippi State 70-29. Yeah the 29 is correct...And the only major upset was Kansas State that took down USC 80-67...The Celtics completed their Texas sweep taking out Dallas 94-90...The ex-wife of NBA ref Tim Donaghy is seeking a restraining. I guess he couldn't fix those problems...I think Penn State maybe going a little too far with their JoePa love. A new course at the University will investiage Joe Paterno's interactions with the media...The Raiders signed DeAngelo Hall to a seven year, $70 million deal...The Red Wings have lost Brad Stuart for the rest of the season after sustaining a non-displaced fracture of his finger during the Wings 3-1 over Columbus...Freddy Adu's two goals gave the US a 3-0 win over Canada and an Olympic birth...David Beckham can litterally take over US soccer when his contract with the LA Galaxy expires in 2011. According to 60 Minutes Becks has the option to buy an MLS franchise. I wonder which one he'll pick.

The Red Sox and A's arrive in Japan

The Red Sox and A’s finally landed in Japan a day after it seemed like the Sox were putting the kibosh on the whole thing. And frankly it showed in their fashion choices. They largely came overseas in jeans and t-shirts. Just look at Tim Wakefield, he looks like he’s going camping.

Photo: Koichi Kamoshida/Getty Images

In fact the best dressed Red Sox players had to have been Dice-K and Hideki Okajima who paired their denim pants with a blazer (Dice-K) and cute oxford and windbreaker combo(Okajima).

Photo: REUTERS/Issei Kato
Photo: Koichi Kamoshida/Getty Images

Oh, and I totally understand why Terry Francona should always wear a hat. It really gives him a more youthful appearance.

Photo: REUTERS/Issei Kato

On the other hand, the A’s came out swinging, at least in the Japanese airport runway. My hats off to Bobby Crosby, his clean cut suit is a perfect fit giving him an effortless feel. And can you imagine walking off the plane without a wrinkle. That takes talent my friends. Or a steamer, but that would be awkward getting steamed in the terminal.

Photo: AP Photo/Shuji Kajiyama

Joe Blanton will not be on the Paris runways…well…probably ever, but you know what that didn’t stop him from finding a great fitting suit that almost hides the belly pudge. He proves that it’s all about fit. Do you hear that Derek Jeter, it’s all about fit!

Photo: AP Photo/Shuji Kajiyama

Even Travis Buck was able to pull off the grey suit peach shirt combo. Now if only he could work on that hair.

Photo: AP Photo/Shuji Kajiyama

It seems for now, the A’s have won the battle, but with two games to be played it remains to be seen who will win the war.

The Knicks are getting no loving

With the turmoil surrounding the Knicks it should come as no surprise that they aren’t exactly a fan favorite in the Empire state. A new poll conducted among New Yorkers found that just 2% of people living in New York State called the Knicks their favorite team. The Red Sox who don’t even play in New York ranked higher with 3% of those polled naming them their favorite. (Transplants I pray)

The poll also showed that the New York Yankees ranked as the States most loved team (surprise, surprise) brining in 27% with the New York Mets following in second with 12% and the Super Bowl champion Giants coming in third with 9% of the vote, proving that in New York, baseball remains its sport of choice. Others receiving votes included the Buffalo Sabres and Bills, New York Rangers and Jets and Syracuse University.

Friday Night Lights Season 3 "It's a Go!"

According to this post on Watch with Kristin, "Friday Night Lights" Season 3 is a go! Of course, this isn't totally confirmed, but the talks between NBC and DirectTV are thisclose to finishing and agents for the actors have been contacted so it's practically a formality. The only down side, supposedly season 3 is only garuanteed 13 episodes with a wait and see for the back 9. Frankly I don't care. I am in serious Tim Riggins withdrawl so 13 episodes works for me!

Also over at tvguide.com, Michael Ausiello has all the dirt from the Paley Festival which on Wednesday featured the cast of "Friday Night Lights." Click here to get the scoop.

Day One of Pretending to Work at the Office News

If you're reading this, you're probably well aware that today is the first full day of NCAA tournament games. So to help you out click here to stream video of all the action. And here (then click the panic button) for a good cover-up if your boss walks in. First game starts at 12:20, so get all the work you can possibly get done before then oh and grab a sandwich or some popcorn too it's going to be a couple of hours in front of monitor without the ability to take bathroom or snack breaks so you have to be ready.

Baseball Update:
Yesterday's drama filled morning for the Red Sox has come to a close after the pay dispute was resolved. Although apparently, the Padres and Dodgers got paid in snickers bars for their trip to China. Is it wrong that I'd almost rather that than $40,000?

Speaking of Red Sox, they sent Bartolo Colon to Minor League camp.

Don't feel bad Bartolo, the White Sox reportedly put Juan Uribe on waivers and he didn't even know about it.

So the Dodgers are kind of screwed after losing Andy LaRoche on a freak play, the Dodgers maybe without Nomar Garciaparra after an MRI revealed a microfracture in his hand. Looks like someone is need a third baseman.

Kerry Wood missed a one-inning relief appearance for the Cubs due to back spasms.

The Kerry Wood may have also been having a little fun on Tuesday when members of the team pulled their own episode of "Punk'd" on strength coach Tim Buss by wrecking his 1995 Nissan Sentra and then giving him a brand spanking new Nissan Xterra. Of course, they let him dwell on the trashed old car for a while before presenting him with his new gift.

Jeff Francoeur is hoping to get back on the field on Thursday after being beaned in the face over the weekend. For more Braves new head over to our Braves Blog.

James Shields will have the honor of being Tampa Bay's Opening Day starter.

Meanwhile, the Rays lastest punching bags, the Yankees have decided to put Joba Chamberlain in the bullpen for the start of the season.

They also beat the Pirates 12-9 in the first ever night game at McKechnie Field.

Mets pitcher John Maine struck out seven in his three inning appearance during their 3-1 win over the Indians.

The Nationals have quite a pair on their roster in reformed rapper Lastings Milledge and hopefully a reformed all-around bad guy Elijah Dukes. Otherwise they made a couple of bad trades in the off season.

Barry Bonds wants to play in the Majors this season. And it would be super great if someone picked him up so I wouldn't look like such a dork in my Over/Under post.

And who says Miss America's aren't relavent anymore. This year's winner 19 year old Kirsten Haglund will sing the national anthem at Opening Day in Comerica Park. Ok maybe relavent isn't the word, but I wasn't actually sure this thing still existed, so I guess it's more like good PR.

In honor of the Big Dance, mlb.com is offering up their own version of the old bracket game featuring the best in baseball movies. Click here to fill our your bracket.

Nascar Update:
Even though last weekend's race at Bristol was Dale Jarrett's last points paying race, it won't be the last time we see him in a Cup car this season. Jarrett is planning on competing in the All-Star race at Lowe's in May. And if you're looking for tickets for his final race, you're in luck. Lowe's is offering a $44 two day package in honor of the former Champ. I bet they're wishing he was still in the 88 car.

Instead of heading to Colombia or going to the Carribbean during the Cup Series off weekend, Kyle Busch is heading to Nashville to race in the Nationwide Series. And really, why shouldn't he, if you were on a hot streak like his, you wouldn't want to do anything to mess it up.

Of course reigning Daytona 500 winner doesn't feel quite the same as Kyle, because he'll be fishing this weekend.

Apparently Greg Biffle is on an upswing. Or maybe it's luck. Personally, I think he's a tad overrated, but then again, with a season like he's having, I'm just the kind of person he's trying to prove wrong.

Petty Enterprises has decided not to swap points between their two teams.

Brian Vickers is minorly crazy. Like in that ADD kind of way, like a nothing is ever exciting enough kind of thing that I personally do not suffer from. No I'm almost the girl in the bubble circa John Travolta not Jake Gyllenhaal, now that was a terrible remake.

Popo in my crib News:
I think the Steelers maybe turning into the Bengals of 2008 after wide receiver Cedric Wilson was charged with assualting his estranged girlfriend at the Patron Mexcian Grill on Wednesday night. According to his gf Lindsay Paulat, Wilson allegedly noticed her at the bar, pushed her and then punched in her face before leaving the eatery. Maybe it was a relatiation for their January incident, although I would in no way condone such an act against a female no less. But the pair do have some bad blood between them. Watch out Cedric, because the popo are on your tail!

UPDATE: The Steelers have released Cedric Wilson one day after his arrest. See crime doesn't pay!

Remember when you're parents ragged on you for hanging out with that loser (insert name here) because they would only bring you down. Well Virginia Tech running back Branden Ore is learning that the hard way. Ore's supposed friend Tony Majette was convicted of possessing crack cocaine with the intent to distribute. While Branden was never charged or convicted in the crime he was riding in the car when the pair were pulled over in 2006. After meeting with team officials, it was decided that instead of redshirting Ore for the 2008 season, he'd be better off moving on. Or as his facebook profile says "making life decisions." Got to love Facebook. Either your getting fired from your job for a picture found on your profile or they're using it for official quotes. Watch out Branden, because the popo are on your tail! Well actually your freind Tony's tail!

News & Notes: The Heat have hit a new low besting even the crappy Knicks with their 96-54 loss to the Raptors...LeBron James earned his money in the Cavs 89-73 win over the Pistons...Allen Iverson was cheered in his first game back in Philly since being traded. Unfortunately his team wasn't able to help him out in the Nuggets 115-113 loss to the 76ers...UCONN has self-reported a second violation in recruiting basketball player Maya Moore...The Islanders will be without goaltender Rick DiPietro for the remainder of the season after he undergoes surgery on his hip...Minnesota Wild defenseman Kurtis Foster broken his leg after running into the boards in a collision with the Sharks Torrey Mitchell in the Sharks 4-3 win...If you left last night's Sabres/Lightning game early you missed out on all the fun. Buffalo was able to score six goals in the period leading them to a 7-4 win...The Devils maybe leading the Eastern Conference, but they are certainly not leading MSG's Metro Ice Challenge after failing the Rangers 2-1 in a shoot-out...Highly touted High School player Terrelle Pryor has chosen Ohio State...The new unified Open Wheel series is breeding new rivalries. How excited are you for the start of the new season because I'm freaking out!

Check this out: I am currently obsessed with the new album by Sara Bareilles Little Voice. You can't go anywhere without hearing the insanely catchy single "Love Song" but the rest of her album really showcases her beautiful voice with incredible lyrics and an all around great vibe. Well I don't know if I can desribe it well enough, so I guess you just have to click here to find out.

Red Sox threatening a boycott

Following a players’ only meeting held on Wednesday morning, the Red Sox have voted unanimously not to take the designated flight to Japan or participate in the two exhibition and two regular season games planned for this week. The players are upset that the coaches are not getting paid for this overseas adventure and are willing to take a stand against MLB.

As of now, the players have closed the clubhouse to reporters and have yet to take batting practice. Curt Schilling who is on the DL said he's not sure if the team will even go out to play in today's scheduled spring training game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Oakland A's, the other MLB team involved, were made aware of the coach's situation a few days ago but have yet to threaten a similar lockout.

If the Red Sox do not go, I'm assuming they'd forfeit the two regular season games scheduled. But as of now, details are bit sketchy.

We'll update you when we find out more information.
(Photo: Charles Krupa/AP; source)

UPDATE: Crisis is looking like it will adverted. The team took the field for their game against the Blue Jays an hour late but will likely board a plan straight to Japan after the game ends. Click here for more information.

Over/Under

It’s time to play over/under. This month we’re focusing on the upcoming baseball season.

Over/Under that Lupe Fiasco’s “Superstar” will be played more often as an entrance song than Mims’ “This is why I’m Hot”.

I’d say under “This is Why I’m Hot” which was used by batters like Alex Rodriguez last season but over “I’m a Flirt” which was another choice jam for Derek Jeter and I believe Troy Tulowitzki.

Speaking of AROD, Over/Under that he knocks 50 homeruns this season.

I'm going with over on this one. Alex has had three career 50+ homerun seasons, the last coming in 2007. The First time he hit over 50 was in 2001 and he followed that up with five more homers in 2002. Plus he's being working really hard, hitting everyday during the offseason to keep his stroke smooth.

Staying in New York, Over/Under that Johan Santana will have 20 wins with the Mets this season.

I’m going under on this one. 20 wins is a hard commodity, in fact in 2007 only Josh Beckett reached that milestone. The last time Santana did it himself was in 2004 and it’s the only time he has reached 20 wins. I know that even years are good for him, but I don’t see him getting 20 wins this season. Maybe a Cy Young, but not 20 wins.

Ok switching gears, Over/Under that Barry Bonds gets 100 at bats this season.

I’m going with over on this one. Currently Bonds is unemployed but there could be a time when a team gets very desperate especially a team that is dependent on a DH and they may need Bonds to fill in. If you put Bonds in as DH and he got 3 at bats a game, he’d have 100 at bats in just over 33 games, make that 4 and he’d do it in 25. I couldn’t see a team picking him up to make spot starts, it would have to be a team that needed a regular DH and come June, July or August, I think he’ll latch onto some team.

Finally, Over/Under that Teddy Roosevelt gets one win in the President’s Race at the new Nationals Park.

Teddy is currently toasting a big golden zero by his name as he has yet to win one President’s race. My feeling is he’s either going to win the first game ever played at the new stadium on March 30th or he’s never going to win ever. So I’m going with under on this one. Too bad Teddy, but it’s looking like this may be the middle of a beautiful winless streak.
